Charles Anderson Central city retailers and business owners met with Nelson City Council last night to discuss the CBD in the wake of closing shops and concern about a sustainable future for the city. The meeting comes on the back of worry over the retail spaces closing and Nelson becoming like a “ghost town” during the winter, along with a general trend of people moving away from physical spaces for their shopping. The Nelson Weekly has reported on these concerns in the past, particularly the number of empty shop fronts and some of the issues with getting innovative projects off the ground. Chief executive of the Nelson Regional Development Agency, Mark Rawson, says that the meeting is a continuation of the conversations that have been happening with landlords. “I think it’s trying to get everybody on the same page and a common understanding of what the issues are.” He says, as retail has forever changed, it’s important to understand what is attracting investment in business looking to the future.

Rainbow Ski Area is having the biggest start to its season ever with the best weather it has had in a decade, according to general manager James Lazor. The ski field was abuzz on Sun-
day for the Family Fun Day which saw snow enthusiasts from around the region descend on Rainbow to take part in some fun activities as well as a great day’s skiing. For James it was testament to the great work his team
has done this season, which opened on July 6. “It has got to be 10 years since we had this sort of snow and it’s the biggest start to a season, I think, ever. We have a great team and did a lot of marketing to get Rainbow on people’s
radars.” James has been in the role since February and is the first general manager for the ski field as it looks to plan for the future.

Their function is far more the social heart of a community.” In the council’s long term plan it says its aim for Nelson’s central business district is for it to be attractive to businesses, residents and visitors, with an exceptional mix of events, civic facilities and retail. To this end it has implemented a commercial differential to lower rates in the CBD and Stoke by a total of $320,000. It has also set aside about $200,000 in CBD enhancement fund for the next several years. “Council wants to support our CBD businesses and see the

city centre continue to thrive,” it says. However, concerns still abound. Several business owners spoken to by the Nelson Weekly say such measures are piecemeal and will not go far to achieving the vision put out by the council. For this reason, the Weekly is starting a series focusing in on the issues around creating a vibrant CBD and what can be done to create a vibrant heart to Nelson. Simon Duffey of Uniquely Nelson says that this kind of largescale meeting had not happened before. He says it’s about tearing down the “silos” that have existed between council, business operators and promotors. “And having an open and frank discussion.”
We say... We believe Nelson needs bold action to match its bold talk when it comes to the CBD. The council wants our city centre to be the “bustling meeting place for everyone who lives, works and visits here”. But you don’t have to go far to hear stories of woe from business owners, trying to make things happen, but only to be met with red tape road blocks. The council wants Nelson to be a “smart little city” but has only put aside $200,000 a year for CBD enhancement – a paltry sum in the scheme of the or-
ganisation’s spending. In 2014 Mayor Rachel Reese spoke about trying to revitalise the CBD. She quoted several issues including, incentivising private investment in public places, and reducing red tape for development opportunities as things to work on. Four years on there is little noticeable difference. So, for the next few weeks we will explore what the challenges, opportunities and prospects for the CBD Last night’s meeting was a good first step. Now Nelson needs to run.

All Blacks to bring party to Nelson Nelson city will play host to a “huge” street party ahead of the All Blacks first-ever test match to be played in Nelson, on September 8. “With Nelson being the birthplace of rugby in New Zealand in 1870, it is only fair that we celebrate the historic occasion of our first-ever All Blacks test match,” says Nelson Regional Development Agency chief executive Mark Rawson. That means, from 1pm to 5.30pm, on the day the All Blacks play Argentina at Trafalgar Park, Nelson will become a place to treat the family to a taste of Kiwi and Argentinian culture, local artisan food, history, entertainment and a dedicated family area. Upper Trafalgar Street will be also closed to vehicles and a main entertainment stage is confirmed for 1903 Square with a range of cultural entertainment and performances. “Explore the shops, galleries, cafes, bars and restaurants, then make your way to the game and participate in rugby history,” says Mark. “Or, if you don’t have a ticket, stay in town to watch it at one of the many CBD bars and restaurants.” There will also be a pop-up

Stoke kids given thermals for winter Jonty Dine Reporter

Students of Stoke Primary School will be feeling less of the winter chill thanks to the generosity of the Elim Christian Centre. The school recently received more than 300 thermals from the church after they noticed some of the students were ill-equipped for the winter season. Acting principal Sarah Davies says Elim Church have long been great supporters of the school, providing soup for lunches and helping maintain the gardens. She says the donation of the thermals is just the “icing on the cake”. “We are so impressed by the contributions Elim make to the school, these thermals will keep our pupils warm and keep them going for the rest of winter.” Church pastor Maria Batchelar says they wanted to do something for every student as it’s important every child knows they are valued. “We looked to see what we as a church could do for our community.” Elim’s latest act of goodwill involved raising money for more than 300 Kathmandu longsleeved thermal under-tops.

Maria says, because kids are always losing their clothes and some families can’t afford to replace them, some kids are left with just a short-sleeved top in winter. “That leads to them getting sick
and just not enjoying their education.” Maria says it’s exciting to give the children the message that they are worth it. “It’s more than a top, it shows that they are valuable, they are important and they are special.” Elim make it a mission to be heavily involved with the Stoke
community and primary school. For the past eight years, during terms two and three, Elim has provided soup and a bun for students, a gesture that has been embraced by the school. “A lot of them come to school on Monday without a lunch, now it’s part of the school culture,” Maria says.
She says they will continue to find ways to improve the lives of local children. “We love to work with the community, that’s part of our heart.” Elim also run a before and after school programme for students of Stoke School. Maria says it’s great to remain involved in their lives as they grow.

More businesses buying defibs Jonty Dine While they hope they never have to use it, Filco Farm & Sport are the latest local business to purchase a defibrillator. It means that there are now more than 130 AEDs around Nelson, some of which belong to businesses but others are public. St Johns intensive care paramedic Chris Readie says buying a defibrillator is a great way to support the community. “It is becoming more and more common, which is great.” Filco Farm & Sport dealer principal Dave Filer was on hand to receive the life-saving device from St John last week.
“We decided to invest in it to support both our team and the community,” Dave says. He says, should an emergency ever occur, his staff will be well prepared. “Pretty much every one of our staff has done a first aid course at some stage and we continue to do refreshers.” Dave says he was prompted to make the purchase after learning of a lack of defibrillators in the area. “We got talking about where they are in our area and the closest we had to us while Mitre 10 Mega over the road, but there are so many people who live and work on this side of the highway, so we decided to
get our own.” He says the $3,500 purchase is an investment to potentially save someone’s life. “We saw that as a pretty cool thing.” Dave says, while they learn lots about fixing motorbikes, jet skis and farm vehicles, all of those things require a person to operate them. “We hope no one ever needs it, but if they ever do, how cool would it be to save someone’s life?” Chris of St Johns says one of the important aspects of purchasing a defibrillator is registering it online so first responders know where the nearest one is at all times.

The project manager in charge of the embattled Greenmeadows Centre is now off the project in the wake of several serious construction issues that the Nelson City Council is now weighing its legal options over. Onus Construction was enlisted to manage the project early on in its inception. It was also responsible for the recommending the tender to Watts and Hughes Construction, which has borne the brunt of criticism over the build. The community centre was supposed to open last year but now will not be open until next year after a series of building woes. An audit commissioned by Nelson City Council also found various structural faults that had been signed off by engineering consultants Aurecon.
Onus Construction Ltd consisted of two directors when it was first awarded the Greenmeadows project – Peter Chisolm and Colin Anderson. However, Colin Anderson ceased as a director on Sept 2, 2016 after he applied for a job for a construction company that turned out to be Watts and Hughes. An audit of that process found no conflict of interest as Colin did not know Watts and Hughes was the company he was applying for at the time. He told the Nelson Weekly that he did end up working for Watts and Hughes but not in Nelson. “I made it really clear that I couldn’t have anything to do with it.” Colin said he “did not have anything to do with” the Greenmeadows project. “It was always Peter.” He says he is still on good terms with his former business partner but has now left the industry completely. Peter Chisholm told the Nelson
Weekly he could not comment about the project as he had a contract with the council. “It’s best I refer all comment to council.” Council’s communications manager Paul Shattock said Onus was contracted to develop concept plans, secure consents, and process the tendering of physical works. They also had responsibility of supervising construction and checking compliance. Consent documents provided to the Weekly show that the project failed the vast majority building inspections regularly over the last two years. Paul said council could not elaborate on the role Onus played relating to the issues experienced at Greenmeadows. “Council is currently seeking legal and expert advice.” He also said Aurecon were still working on Greenmeadows, and are assisting to come up with solutions to issues identified during the independent audit by Grant Hunt Consulting.
The Trustees of the Network Tasman Trust hold the shares in Network Tasman Limited on behalf of the company’s electricity consumers.
The Trustees’ role is to represent the interests of consumers that are connected to Network Tasman’s electricity network. The Trust appoints the Directors of Network Tasman Ltd and monitors the company’s performance. It also approves the annual Statement of Corporate Intent which contains the company’s short- and long-term targets for reliability, capital expenditure and financial performance. Legislation requires that Network Tasman Ltd must operate as a successful business. The Trust has six trustees: five are elected by all eligible Network Tasman consumers and one is appointed by the three largest consumers. The elected trustees serve six-year terms with the right to be re-elected. Distributing accumulated funds to consumers Network discounts are provided to electricity consumers by Network Tasman Limited based on consumption at each connection. In order to maximise financial benefits to consumers, the timing of these has recently altered following changes in the taxation treatment of electricity network discounts. The Trust provides an annual distribution of accumulated funds to consumers. Last year this was $80 to each consumer. In previous years, the Network Tasman Trust annual Christmas distribution has occurred in the form of a cheque. From this year the distribution will be provided as a credit on power bills around late November/early December. Supporting community activities The Trust provides grants to a range of community groups – last year $70,000 was given to schools, sports teams, music groups and community support organisations. Two students are awarded the annual Sir Wallace Rowling Scholarship to pursue tertiary education. The Nelson Giants' season ended on the weekend after being knocked out of the NBL by eventual champions, the Southland Sharks. While the Nelson Giants may not have come away from Wellington with the silverware they had hoped for, they did manage to pick up three prestigious prizes. The franchise won the management award, coach of the year and best forward during the finals four weekend. Finn Delany took home the best forward award as well as being named in the All Star five, while Julie Bensemann won the administration award and Jamie Pearlman was named coach of the year in just his first season with the side. Jamie says, while it has been a huge turnaround from the franchise's four-win season in 2017, they still wanted to achieve more. "You're never satisfied, this group was good enough and should have been a finals team." Jamie says he hopes to retain as many of his squad as possible for 2019. "It has been a fantastic team and we want to keep as many players as possible and build for next year."

Giving vulnerable elderly a helping hand Charles Anderson Editor

A new venture by Habitat for Humanity in Nelson will see vulnerable elderly people helped into subsided housing near the hospital. It is the first time the non-profit has moved into offering rentals. It usually runs on an assisted home ownership model where people pay rent to Habitat, which is held, and then becomes a deposit they use to buy the home off the organisation. “A couple of years ago we did an assessment and we saw there are a huge number of vulnerable elderly people who can’t
afford to go into fancy retirement villages,” says Habitat’s manager Glenn Brewerton. “This was a need we identified.” So it decided to start building on a plot of land it bought about seven years ago. The three units will be specially for elderly and act as subsided rentals at about 80 percent of the market rate. However, the weather hasn’t been kind to the team. “We work with volunteers. Everyone, bar one, is down here is working in their own time,” says Glenn. “It’s not the fastest way to build but it is the most affordable way.” Habitat is now looking for tenants for the units which are
built with accessible showers and reinforced walls to protect against bumps from things like wheelchairs. They are close to completing the units on Tipahi St just opposite Nelson Hospital. Glenn says the location is no accident. It also sits next to another property the organisation purchased, which is now being leased by the Salvation Army to use as emergency housing. “Our whole being is based on helping people who struggle,” says director Rob Silcock. Helping to uncover Nelson’s past

Kate Russell To know where you’re going, you’ve got to know your past: that’s the message from a group of passionate Nelson genealogists. Tucked away in the Trafalgar Hall is a library bursting with stories of Nelson’s history. Records of births, deaths and marriages, cemeteries, education, electoral rolls and passenger lists are just some of the things you’ll find on the shelves of Ancestors’ Attic, the Nelson branch of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists. Member Judith Fitchett has made it her aim to connect these records to inquisitive locals, and will be running a beginner’s genealogy course throughout August as part of family history month. Judith has been running the courses for ten years and says she loves to start people off on their family history journey. “A lot of people think everything can be done on the internet, but actually, only a tenth of all information is online. We help people tease out the information and get the facts down,” she says. Her interest in family history research started in the year 2000. “It was right at the start of the internet. I had a lot of photos and heirlooms handed down to me from some of the first settlers and wanted to find out more about their stories - just little things like knowing the name of the ship they came on,” she says. “For me, I like to do family history to look at the social history - looking at what life was like for them. People led quite regulated-type lives [back then].” The Nelson branch has been running for over 30 years and members are dedicated to preserving Nelson’s history, collecting for the future, and helping others. They are open Mondays 1-4pm, Thursdays 10am-4pm and Sundays 2-4pm at 67 Trafalgar St. Nelson Photo News, family announcements indexed from various Nelson newspapers, old age pensions, headstone transcriptions, college magazines and school scrapbooks and centennial booklets are just some of the other records you’ll be able to peruse. Judith says that it’s important for people to know where they came from. “I think it gives a firm base and centres people. Anyone has access to records and we get a whole range of people coming in. We’ll help anyone walking off the street.” Judith’s course, ‘Starting Genealogy’, is on August 7, 14 and 21, 9.30 - 11.30am at the Elma Turner Library. City parking: Just recently I read a statement from Nelson City Council to the effect that, because of the one hour free parking, less revenue would be available to put towards the costs of running the NBus services, and as a result more ratepayer funding would be used. But, in the Nelson Weekly on 31 July 2018, under the heading “Change for city parking”, we read a statement from Alec Louverdis, NCC group manager infrastructure, in which he said revenue gathered from car parking goes towards city centre enhancement, such as summer hanging baskets, maintenance of street trees, furniture and the like. Wouldn't this have already been allowed for in other costing? A Smithson Greenmeadows: I would like to thank Councillor Courtney for having the courage to speak out about the Stoke Greenmeadows Community Centre debacle. Thank you, Councillor Courtney, for demonstrating that you have Nelson ratepayers’ interests at heart. And thank you for calling for an independent review by external people qualified and experienced to conduct such a review. Nelson Matters There are many signs the New Zealand economy is weakening after years of stellar growth. This trend should worry us all. It means fewer jobs, lower living standards and less revenue for Government to provide healthcare, education and superannuation. Business confidence in New Zealand has plummeted to the lowest level in ten years, while Australia’s is at a ten year high. The OECD that includes the 35 developed countries in the world like the US, UK, Canada, Japan etc has us falling from second best last year to second
worst now. We have pulled into the slow lane with 33 countries passing us. Businesses lacking confidence do not employ or invest. There were 10,000 new jobs being created per month in 2016 and 2017. It has dropped 60% to now 4,000 per month. Unemployment had been consistently dropping for years but it is now going up again. Nelson unemployment was 2.2% when National left office but is now at 4.7%. Trouble is also brewing in our productive industries. Farmer’s confidence has fallen 66% and
horticulturalists by even more. We have seen four large building companies nationally go broke in the last month, putting hundreds out of work and creditors further down the line, out of pocket. These economic woes are in turn seeing a return of the brain drain. We had 30,000 kiwis leave for Australia a year back in 2008, with most being our best and brightest. Last year it reversed with a nett gain for New Zealand of 1,000. This year’s figures show the tide turning back and kiwis leaving again. These economic troubles are the

While extra help for victims of domestic violence is welcome, dumping the cost for every society woe on businesses is unfair. Meanwhile, the hundred
plus reviews across almost every sector from electricity to transport and rogue Ministers taking cheap pot shots at business leaders like Fonterra and Air New Zealand is not helping. The state of the economy is wide reaching and affects us all. While it is cool having a new young Mum as PM, it is no substitute for good governance and a strong economy. We need the PM, now back from maternity leave, to recognise these serious problems, get her Ministers listening and for the Government to change tack. Advert.

Nelson mums celebrate breast-feeding Kate Russell
Mums and babies from all over Nelson filled the Victory Community Centre on Friday morning with chatter - but when 10.30am hit, all was quiet for the Big Latch On. Eleven mothers breast-fed their children simultaneously with
others around the country to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week. The annual event aims to normalise breast-feeding as part of everyday life and to raise awareness about the significance of breast milk in an infant’s early years. Nelson mum Lorna Johnston was there with her second child, Lily,
who is nine-months-old. Lorna has recently gone back to work as a nurse at Nelson Hospital and says she was determined to keep breast-feeding her daughter - so she expresses milk during her lunch-breaks. Although she says it can be tough, it’s worth it. “I breast-fed my first
child for seven months, so I was determined to give it a whole year with Lily.” She says events such as the Big Latch On encourage mums to come out and talk to each other. “I think it’s something that people need to be more educated on and need support with. Yes, it can be a struggle, but we’re all here to
help.” Organiser Debra Hardcastle, from Nelson Bays Primary Health, says it was a “friendly and intimate” event with babies from as young as six weeks to two-anda-half year olds. "It was lovely to celebrate a moment in time where mums and babies could connect.”

There are five services every weekday, starting from the Tennis Courts at Main Road Stoke and travelling around the suburb between Saxton Road East, Quarantine Road, The Ridgeway and Seaview Road. The first bus of the day leaves at 9.15am and the final one is at 2.15pm. That means the Stoke Loop is always FREE to Super Gold Card users. Otherwise there is a flat fare of $2.50 for adults and $1.50 for children (children under 5 are free on all NBus services). The Stoke Loop is a “Hail and Ride” service so there is no need to wait at a formal bus stop. Just signal the driver and the bus will stop where it is safe to do so. You might be able to catch it right on your doorstep!

ODI cricket returns to Saxton Oval
International Super Club netball tournament puts Nelson on world stage The Nelson region will get the opportunity to feature on the world stage when the Super Club netball competition returns to the Trafalgar Centre on 19 – 24 August. Eight teams, including five international club sides and New Zealand’s top three ANZ Premiership finishers, the Central Pulse, Southern Steel and Silvermoon Tactix, will go head-to-head in the tournament. This season features South African Premier League champions the Gauteng Jaguars, Singapore side Sneakers, Scotland’s UWS Sirens, along with New South Wales Institute of Sport and a combined Fiji/Samoa side, with the tournament broadcast live on Sky Sport to an international audience. There will also be plenty of local interest, with the Silvermoon Tactix competing after an improved showing in the ANZ Premiership, while teams will mingle with the local communities on Wednesday 22 August with the help of Sport Tasman. "Top flight netball returns to our Trafalgar Centre after an extremely successful first year in 2017. This is a chance to experience the energy and talent of some
of the world’s best players, along with a number of up and coming stars,” Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese says. “The teams are competing for the coveted Super Club trophy, crafted by Nelson's Master Jewellers and craftsmen Halfdan and Thorkild Hansen, so we’ll be in for an action packed week of netball.” Nelson City Council, National Regional Development Agency, Nelson Netball and Netball New Zealand have collaborated to bring the event to the city along with significant local private sector support. According to Netball NZ Head of Events and International Kate Agnew, Netball NZ is pleased to be working with the support of Mayor Rachel Reese and her team to bring this exciting event to Nelson. “Critical to the delivery and development of this event, Nelson City Council through the NRDA has been instrumental in securing this event for Nelson Tasman, but the region itself has been very supportive and positive about the opportunities working with this event,” Kate says. The competition sees 20 games played over six days, culminating in the Grand Final on 24 August, while there will be a special interest in the two goal scoring zone introduced for the tournament.
International cricket returns to Nelson this summer, with the Black Caps taking on Sri Lanka in the third one-day international of the series at Saxton Oval, on Tuesday 8 January 2019. The venue, which hosted teams from Pakistan and West Indies last summer, is set to see some exciting cricket, with the match potentially doubling as the ODI series decider. The Sri Lankan cricket team will bring some good form to New Zealand in December, after beating South Africa in a recent test series and will play New Zealand in two tests, three ODIs and a one-off T20. "The international match
is an excellent opportunity to promote the Nelson region on the world stage," Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese says. "Nelson is proud to host the Black Caps and Sri Lanka and welcome the many visitors to our city and region. Saxton Oval has established itself as an international venue over the previous five years, as a perfect summer holiday venue. Central City fanzone gets a boost for rugby test match On Thursday 26 July, the Governance Committee recommended to Council that it approves additional funding of up to $20,000 in relation to the All Blacks vs Argentina rugby test match on 8 September. These funds would be used by the Nelson Regional Development Agency (NRDA) to manage the much higher than usual traffic demands and additional temporary facilities (including toilets). This includes a bus system on game day, where match ticket holders will be able to catch the buses for free, to and from the match. "Fans can travel by bus into the inner city, on game day, and home again after the game, by presenting their match tickets, with details of extra services and stops to be confirmed," Governance

Banded kokopu spawning in Pipers Park Work to improve fish habitat in our urban streams is paying dividends, with the first record of banded kokopu eggs found in Pipers Park Reserve, a tributary of the Maitai catchment. The spawning record is particularly exciting because it occurred within Nelson City, in a creek where fish passage and riparian planting work was undertaken in 2015 to improve fish habitat. The eggs were found during a survey for koaro and banded kokopu spawning sites. Banded kokopu favour shady, grassy banks alongside the stream for spawning. The banded kokopu is one of five whitebait species that occurs in the Nelson Region. All the whitebait species have limited distribution in the Region due to habitat loss. Council’s freshwater and biodiversity programmes – Healthy Streams and Nelson Nature – are seeking to further restore habitat through fish passage and water quality improvements and riparian planting.

It is tolerant of a wide range of climates and conditions, and spreads easily from gardens into surrounding areas. So even though it is pretty, it is not a good plant to have in your garden. Taiwan cherry is easily recognised by its bright pink blossoms that appear in late July and August. This species is a high biosecurity priority, and Council is again offering free removal if you have this tree on your property. Council contractors will be contacting landowners with known trees over the next few weeks, to arrange tree removal free of charge. So far, Council contractors have removed approximately 13,000 Taiwan cherry trees from gardens and reserves around Nelson. If you suspect you have Taiwan cherry on your property, and haven’t been contacted, get in touch to arrange for the tree/s to be assessed. Replanting with native species such as kowhai, rata or cabbage trees to benefit the local bird population is recommended. Changes to rates rebate a big help for retirees If you earn less than $25,180* per year and pay the rates on your home, you could get up to $630 taken off your rates. The Rates Rebate Scheme was established by Government in 1973 to provide a subsidy to low income home owners on the cost of their rates. Council administers the scheme for Nelson and is reimbursed by Government for all rates rebates. From 1 July 2018, the scheme has also been extended to include retirement village residents who do not own their unit, but pay fees to live there. Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese says she is pleased that retirement village residents are now

recognised as ratepayers. This places retirement village residents with a ‘license to occupy’ on par with those who own units. Local Government New Zealand has been urging government to address this anomaly for some time. “Council will be contacting all retirement villages that may have eligible residents to arrange visits and will also be making contact with residents who have received a rebate last year. Proposed reserve revocation Daelyn Drive Reserve Nelson City Council proposes to revoke the reserve status of a small piece of land at Daelyn Drive Reserve. It’s a narrow strip of recreation reserve land originally intended to be used for an access way. The land was vested in Council when originally subdivided, but changes to the subdivision mean that this land is not used as an access way and it is surplus to Reserves Act requirements. Following revocation, Council proposes to
enter into an agreement with the adjacent landowners who wish to purchase the land and amalgamate it with their titles. The project examines the changes in rural New Zealand and asks why does one town decline while another prospers. Thomas’ photographs of rural New Zealand highlight these changes and remind us where we have come from as a country and of our identity as New Zealanders. What brings you here? Jasper returns home Staff reporter
Jasper Hawkins is returning to his hometown to perform at the Nelson Centre for Musical Arts this Thursday as part of their lunchtime concert series. Jasper is a singer-songwriter born and raised in Nelson and now residing in Auckland. Throughout his development as a musician, he eventually became interested in songwriting and released his debut, self-produced EP, entilted ‘Good Heart’ in 2013. In 2017 he
recorded his first full-length studio album at Roundhead Studios with internationally acclaimed producer Greg Haver. In August of that year, his track entitled ‘Letter to my Mother’ was picked up by radio host Jesse Mulligan and aired on Radio NZ. This led to a subsequent invitation to perform live in late September with his 6-piece band. The album was released June 8, 2018. Jasper takes inspiration from classic artists such as Fleetwood Mac and Paul
Simon as well as more recent artists such as John Mayer, infusing folk, pop and rock to create his own unique sound delivered in his own unique, songwriting style. Recently, Jasper has returned from a successful 20-show nationwide ‘Which Way Shall We Go’ tour supporting Ciaran McMeeken. He is now currently working on his second studio album. Stoke-based Total Decorating Ltd won the Residential Master Painter of the Year at the Master Painters New Zealand Awards in Queenstown this winter. It is the top prize available for residential painters in this country. The award was judged across a selection of homes submitted by Total Decorating, which included new home interiors, timber finishing, wallpapering and painting at renovations. The residential side of the awards has 14 categories, each with a section winner, several gold awards and some highly-recommended winners below that. The Total Decorating team won three sections, another four gold awards, as well as the overall residential award. tial Master Painter of the Year is a true achievement.” Dulux Nelson representative Craig Brown says he’s delighted the top award was won by a Nelson company. “I think the judges liked that Aaron entered a number of homes, they weren’t just one or two hand-picked just for the awards. The judges liked that they could go on any of his sites and see that same consistency.” Aaron says the biggest thrill of winning was being able to use it to recognise the efforts of his team, which is made up of a dozen painters and an office administrator. “It’s for them really. They work bloody hard and keep our standards up, so it really does reflect on them. I go through every home before we hand it over, so I keep a really close eye on what we do and the guys don’t give me much to do, the standard is really high and this award highlights that.” He says the company has made a big effort to implement systems that makes each house as efficient as possible while ensuring the highest quality. Aaron says they're far from finished either, as he eyes up next year's awards already. "It's been a three to four year process for us to get here but we're not done yet. We want to keep striving and keep trying to be as good as we can. "I'd also really like to thank Master Painters for putting these awards on, it's a great way to recognise the hard work that our painters put in and the results we get."

Tilly given coaching shot Jonty Dine Following the Tall Ferns William Jones Cup win last month, player Penina Davidson walked over to apprentice coach Frances Tilly and offered the Nelson coach her gold medal. Frances says Penina told her, ‘I want to give you my medal because it means so much to have female coaches.’ She says next to winning the tournament, the moment was a highlight. “That was a huge moment coming from a player I really admire.” The Nelson Basketball general manager travelled with the side to Taipei as an apprentice to head coach Guy Molloy, for
the 40th edition of the William Jones Cup on July 14-29. She says the opportunity was presented to her just a month before departure. “It came out of the blue and I was given 24 hours to make a decision.” Frances jumped at the opportunity after being given permission from Nelson Basketball. The Tall Ferns trained in Japan amid in 35-40C heat and 90 percent humidity. Once the tournament tipped off, the Tall Ferns met Korea, India, Chinese Taipei A and B and Japan, going unbeaten throughout. She says knocking off Korea, who are ranked 16th in the world, (NZ are 42nd) was a highlight.
“We weren’t expected to beat them. It instilled a lot of belief in the girls, it was one of those perfect games where we couldn’t miss a shot.” In the final against Japan, the Tall Ferns were trailing by 20 points heading into the third quarter but came away with a 85-74 win. “They just didn’t give up, they kept believing.” Frances only began coaching ‘seriously’ in 2015 and has since enjoyed a rapid rise through the ranks. Frances says she hopes to continue her progression and keep developing as a coach. She says she wouldn't say no should another national oppourtunity come up. "Wearing the fern is pretty special.”

Nelson Suburbs are through to the semi-finals of the Chatham Cup after a tense 1-0 win over East Coast Bays at Saxton Field on Sunday afternoon. An Alex Ridsdale goal just before half time was enough to see Suburbs book a berth in the semis for the first time since 2008. Coach Steve Bignall says his side "worked their butts off " and he couldn't be prouder of his men. "It’s cup football, we rode our luck a bit at times but we kept trying to play football, which was great.” Player coach Ben Wright was 'ecstatic' following the win. "Just brilliant, really pleased, I thought we deserved it." Ben says there were spells where they were put under the pump, but the players stood up in the face of intense pressure. "Overall I think we defended well and everyone put an absolute shift in." He says the win is fantastic for the region.
Nelson Suburbs celebrate their 1-0 win over East Coast Bays from Auckland to advance to the Chatham Cup semi-finals. "It was great to get people down here and behind us, we could hear and sense that." After a feeling out period early on, Matt Tod-Smith found some form, puting on four shots at goal in the opening twenty minutes. Suburbs began to threaten more as the half drew to a close before Alex Ridsdale’s 43rd
minute match-winner. Ridsdale calmly slotted the game’s only goal after Ryan Stewart’s first attempt deflected off keeper Michael Williams. Suburbs made a number of changes early in the second half as they went about defending their lead. East Coast desperately searched for an equaliser, but keeper Corey Wilson
proved impenetrable in goal. Defensive duo Jimmy Deehan and Sam Ayers were superb in tandem at the back while Labu Pan and James McClay looked dangerous throughout. Suburbs will now meet either Cashmere Technical, Western Suburbs or Birkenhead United in the semi-finals on August 25-26.

FOOTBALL: FC Nelson are through to the Price Charity Cup final after a pulsating, extra-time victory over Richmond AFC at Jubilee Park on Saturday. Just 12 years after its inception, the Tasman Mako have already established themselves as provincial powerhouses on the New Zealand domestic rugby scene. The pride of the Tasman region, the 2017 premiership runners-up will look to end the Canterbury dynasty and claim their first ever Mitre 10 Cup title this year. The Mako earned promotion to the premiership after defeating Hawke’s Bay in the 2014 championship final. The side has since made the top four of the top tier competition every season, making the grand final in 2016 and '17. Mako manager Martyn Vercoe says the team will again be a force in the NPC.

Martyn says, dependent on late injuries and All Black commitments, they have assembled a squad boasting a good mix of experience and young talent. “There aren’t too many holes.” Martyn says the younger players in the squad, many of whom have been through the Mako academy, are determined to make a name for themselves. “They are hungry, they have been training with our fully contracted guys the last couple of weeks and are travelling pretty well.” While Martyn says a successful season is often built around the unheralded players, the Mako have plenty of firepower in their ranks. The Mako have lured Solomon Alaimalo south from the Tani-
wha to fill the void left by fan favourite James Lowe who departed for Leinster in 2017. The Chiefs flyer had a stunning Super Rugby campaign, scoring eight tries and propelling himself into the All Blacks conversation. Another one to watch will be former Baby Black Will Jordan, another wider member of the champion Crusaders squad. “They are two game breakers, and depending whether or not David Havili makes the All Blacks, he will also be important to us.” Up front, the Mako have one of the strongest packs on paper, with the likes of new All Blacks Shannon Frizell and Tim Perry in the side, as well as stalwart Alex Ainley, who is nearing

The Mako are drawn to meet NPC champions Canterbury at Lansdowne Park, Blenheim, on Friday evening, August 17. “It’s a good chance to lock horns with Canterbury which has sort of become our key rival.” However, Martyn was quick to point out the season is not
wonand lost in one game, evidenced by the Makos 39-0 drubbing at the hands of the Cantabrians in round one last year. “I think the key is to be consistent all year and just make sure we stick to process and play to our expectation, week in, week out.” He says while it is important to get the best out of themselves, focus on each game and the result will take care of itself at the end of the year. Martyn says the squad is looking forward to playing in front of their community. “It’s an awesome place to train and live because a lot of these guys don’t live here year-round and it’s a privilege for them and

our staff to be in the Mako, so we just want to do the province proud.” Martyn says he is confident the side can go one better than their premiership final loss in 2017. In the decider last year Canterbury thumped Tasman 35-13 in Christchurch, clinching the Red and Blacks’ 14th national title. Tasman will play all their six premiership rivals, plus championship teams Southland, Manawatu, Otago and Hawke’s Bay this season. With a home game scheduled against Ranfurly Shield holders Taranaki, Tasman will have to wait another year for a tilt at the Log of Wood, unless results go their way. There is also a new coaching line-up for the Makos, with two new, but familiar, faces joining head coach Leon MacDonald and attack coach Andrew Goodman as part of the coaching crew. Former Mako captain Shane Christie comes on board as forward and defence coach, along with former All Black Clarke Dermody who will be the new set piece coach. Dermody, who played three times for the All Blacks in 2006, 44 games for the Highlanders and on 89 occasions for Southland, has been the Highlanders’ set piece coach for the past three years.
