A Nelson home owner is frustrated that nothing has been done to remove a car that crashed on to his property nearly three months ago. The car went over the bank on the corner of Quebec Road and Abraham Heights back in May, landing right on Reuben Young’s property below on Henrietta Way. Despite calling the police after the incident, Reuben says the abandoned car is still perched above his home, and not only is it unsafe, but it’s a burden he shouldn’t have to carry. He says that because he has a sloping section and the car is so close to his house, it could potentially slip further down into his property in heavy rain. The police initially told Reuben to call Nelson City Council to have it removed, but the council told him, because it is not on their land, it is not their job to remove it.

The very first comment in Tahuna Beach Holiday Park’s visitor book dates back to 1937 and sums up quite accurately why it has remained so popular ever since. “An ideal situation for all requirements, the best in New Zealand,” wrote N. Pattle from Ashburton on December 6, 1937. Many visitors later, the holiday park is now getting ready to celebrate 90 years - but it needs your help to bring the memories alive.

A national competition, called ‘Collective Holiday Memories’ was launched via a website last month and allows people to submit photos and short stories of both the holiday park and beach. $8000 worth of prizes will be up for grabs for the best stories and photos submitted. Kerry Sunderland, project
manager for the competition, says they welcome nonfiction (personal/memoir/historical) and fiction stories, based on or inspired by people’s holiday memories at Tahuna Beach or the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park - formerly called the Tahuna Beach Motor Camp. “We are hoping to uncover a range of funny, original, heartfelt and quirky holiday memories -

Reuben says the police made no contact with him after the incident and when he tried to get some answers, they were not helpful. “One officer was rude, and suggested I got my insurance cover to remove it,” he says. “But I have been hoping the person who crashed it will front up and remove it. “The police know whose car it is, but they haven’t made them get rid of it – I don’t know why.” The Nelson Weekly contacted the police for some answers over the weekend, and was told that the removal of the vehicle is, indeed, the driver’s responsibility.

“Police have made the driver of the vehicle aware that it is their responsibility,” they stated. “Police have also made contact with the registered owner in regard to the vehicle and having it removed.” They refused to give details of when the driver or vehicle owner was last contacted. Police also suggested that Reuben could pay for the removal of the vehicle, and then the police could facilitate an application for reparations should the matter proceed through the courts. But Reuben says he shouldn’t have to spend his time and money sorting out someone else’s mistake, and is hoping the car owner will remove it soon. Police say that enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are continuing.

After building changing sheds, a playground and a kiosk, locals and holidaymakers started enjoying the site and the motor camp officially opened in November 1937. Today the holiday park, which occupies 22 hectares, attracts about

2500 during its peak season and it is also home to a permanent village population who live in relocatable houses and motor homes. To coincide with the call for contributions of photos and stories, the holiday park is also running a sculpture competition, and is putting out a call for all New Zealand-based sculptors to enter a Tahuna Beach Nature Sculpture Walk. A commemorative book and new interpretative heritage panels throughout the park are also in the pipeline. There are four great prize packages up for grabs, including: best story, best photo, and two people’s choice awards, in which the public will vote. Dads and kids rescued after snow storm hits

A family adventure for two Nelson men and their four young children ended with a ride home in the rescue helicopter on Monday. The families set out for an overnight trip to the Cobb Valley in the Kahurangi National Park on Saturday, with the plan to come home the next day. But heavy snow on Saturday night meant the road was impassable and they called for help from police, from a nearby emergency phone. The group drove to the hut in four-wheel drive vehicles and were well-equipped with camping gear and food. But after spending two cold nights in a small hut, police say they were delighted to have been flown out. “They were in very good spirits and no issues at all,” said sergeant Malcolm York, of Nelson. “Medically they were fine, just a little bit cold after their night sheltering in one of the huts in the area. They had firewood and were able to look after themselves.”

He says the concerning thing about the rescue was the age of the children involved. “That there were four very young children, two threeyear-olds and two five-yearolds. Specifically, given the age of the young children involved, we sent the rescue helicopter up this morning.” After the helicopter arrived at Nelson airport the four children could be seen running towards their mothers as their fathers tried to shield them from media. The families refused to speak with media once inside the
helicopter hanger and asked that their children not be identified. Sergeant York says what caught them out was the weather and specially that they didn’t check the weather forecast before they went up. “That road was showing as open, but there was snow warning for the area and they never picked that up. Cobb Rd is now completely closed to snow. “It’s a tight and treacherous road without the snow, with the snow on it, it’s completely impassable.”

Sculpture lights up Washington Valley Kate Russell On Friday night, Washington Valley’s new artwork lit up for the first time, celebrating an area that is steeped in history. The artwork, named Tangata Taonga, was the idea of the Washington Valley Community Group, and after five years of planning, it was finally installed last month. It now stands proudly on the traffic island at the intersection of Washington Rd and Hastings St - the historical edge of the Paruparu tideway estuary and on the original hill route from the port to the town. Designed by Janet Bathgate in Nelson and hand cut by Classic
Gates Engineering in Blenheim, the sculpture is illuminated at night by an internal LED lamp which is connected to the street light, meaning the design will be visible but no light will be projected directly outwards from the bulb. Washington Valley Community Group member Paul Harrington says it feels great to finally see it up. “It’s been a long time coming, so it’s rather liberating,” he says. “It’s also a little freaky as you take a risk with any public art and there’ll always be those who don’t like it, but I think anything’s an improvement on a blank traffic island. Nelson GPs ‘disappointed’ in parents
Roundabout finished The $2.2 million upgrade of the State Highway 6 Quarantine Road roundabout in Nelson is complete, and temporary speed restrictions have been lifted. The new roundabout features extra lanes added at the approaches from Nelson, Richmond and Quarantine Rd, a wide median island in Quarantine Rd, an extension to the pedestriancycling crossing point on Quarantine Rd and a relocated footpath on the corner around the Nelson Junction site, with a barrier added on this corner. The intersection upgrade has been a joint project between the NZ Transport Agency and the Nelson City Council.
Brittany Spencer The revelation two weeks ago that more than 200 Nelson babies are not fully immunised has left local GPs “disappointed”. Nelson Weekly reported last month that the region’s low immunisation rates meant it missed out on extra funding for regions that met certain health targets. Many of those who didn’t want their babies to be immunised did so for philosophical reasons, said medical centres spoken to by the Weekly. But Nelson’s GP spokesman Graham Loveridge says immunisation is a way of preventing nasty diseases amongst children and parents should think twice before decided not to immunise. “We’re disappointed that parents would choose to not vaccinate because we believe there’s enough good evidence that vaccination is safe and prevents kids from having severe illnesses and, on occasion, from dying.” Graham says people have forgotten how bad these diseases are because they’re not around so much and the vaccine programme is a principal reason for that. “A generation ago, people knew how bad these diseases could be and were much more enthusiastic about getting their kids the protection they need. “Parents often wonder, will they cause any harm to their kids by having a

him against measles, mumps, rubella, Hib and pneumococcal disease. While there were a few tears, the bubbles and balloons afterwards got a cheeky grin back on his face. Matthew’s nurse, Megan Bryan-Heslop says she can’t stress the importance of vaccinating children enough. “As a medical professional, I think it’s really important that all children get full immunisation.”

Chefs encouraged to cook off Locally Owned and Operated

A call has been put out to all restaurants in the Nelson Tasman area to enter their cooks in a ‘masterchef style’ competition at the upcoming Snapafest, and of course, the main ingredient will be seafood.
'Snapamaster' Nelson Tasman Chef of the Year Competition 2016 will see up to 12 chefs from 12 local restaurants cook-off at the festival, which is being held at Founders Park on September 17. Each chef will be given a mystery box of ingredients, at four cooking stations in
front of the crowd, and a limited time to prepare their dish, before being judged by New Zealand’s first MasterChef winner, Brett McGregor. The winning chef gets a weekend for two to Auckland, courtesy of Air New Zealand Grabaseat, with a two night stay at Sky City
Hotel. Each entry also gets a double pass to Snapafest.

Nelson Olympians honoured before Rio Simon Bloomberg
The Sport Tasman's Olympic Long Lunch was a blast from the past, with seven of Nelson's former Olympians recalling their experiences representing New Zealand at the world's biggest sporting event. New Zealand's oldest Olympian, Ngaire Galloway, 90, headed the star-studded line-up that also included Jeff Rackley, Greg Fraine, Lynley Coventry (nee Hannen), Dave Schaper, Robin Reid and Morice Hennessey. And times have obviously changed since Ngaire competed in the 100m backstroke at the 1948 London Olympics. She had to be accompanied by a chaperone, Mimi Ingram, at the games and trained in a small make-shift

container filled with water on the eight-week boat journey to London. Ngaire also had her glory days brought back to life when a scratchy black and white film of the New Zealand team entering the Olympic Stadium was played for the guests. "It's something I'll never forget," she said. "The fact it was so close to the end of the war - it's incredible they were able to hold them at all." A large photo of Ngaire and her team-mates leaping for joy after they arrived in London for the games, following an eight-week boat journey, was also on display at the Olympic Lunch. Ngaire had no problems rattling off the names of the athletes and one manager in the photo - another Nelson athlete, the late Harold Nelson was also a member of the team. Interestingly, Ngaire told guests that Germany and Japan were not invited to the London Olympics while Russia was invited, but declined. Ngaire made the semi-finals at London, finishing seventh. Jeff 's experiences at the Munich Olympics in 1972 were also extraordinary, both in and out of the boxing ring. The welter weight recalled how he was woken at

"We were staying in a room that was literally from you to me away from the Israeli's rooms. We were woken at 5.30 and assembled in the dining room for the next 15 hours." Jeff also told guests that, in contrast to today's highly scientific and analytical approach to sport, he didn't have a trainer at the Olympics and didn't even know he was fighting a southpaw in his opening bout. "It's very different fighting a southpaw - it was a bit of a sur-
prise, so I lost the first two rounds. I worked it out and won the third round, but it was too late." Greg's appearance at the Seoul Olympics in 1988 was also quite unique because he rode in the 100km team time trial - it was the second-to-last time the event was held at the Olympics. Another cyclist, Robin Reid, who competed in Athens in 2004, admitted he was slightly overwhelmed by the Olympics. "It was amazing for me because, as a younger cyclist, I never thought I would achieve that goal. I hadn't had a lot of experience at racing so it was a big step up." Lynley gave guests a hands-on
Olympic experience when she removed the bronze medal she won the rowing pairs at Seoul from a "soap box" and handed it around the room. Dave also rowed at the Olympics, in the coxless four at Atlanta in 1996 and coxless pair at Sydney in 2000, while Morice was a wheelchair racer at the 1984 and 1988 Paralympics. Morice dispelled a popular misconception, telling the audience that "para" did not refer to paraplegic but to parallel, because the Paralympics are held in the same year as the Summer Olympics. The Olympic Lunch also looked to the future when Nelson mayor Rachel Reese presented the parents of three of Nelson's latest Olympians, Kelsie Smith, George Bennett and Julian Matthews, with a Nelson City flag to take to Rio. "These wonderful athletes are all in our hearts, but they are particularly in the hearts of these people," Rachel said. Sport Tasman chief executive Nigel Muir said they were extremely proud of Nelson's six Olympians, Kelsie and Anita McLaren (hockey), George (road cycling), Julian (1500m), Jonelle Price (equestrian) and Brook Robertson (rowing). Nigel calculated that Nelson has the highest number of Olympians per capita in the country.

Hard feed and carrots may not be your usual cake ingredients, but Wednesday's Whakatu RDA celebrations weren't your usual birthday party. The Whakatu Riding for the Disabled Association hosted a birthday party for their 10 working horses, with a morning tea for both horses and humans. The horses were paraded and introduced one at a time for the crowd of volunteers, riders and general public before the fourlegged stars of the show were awarded a feed cake with carrotstick candles each. The charity even received a birthday present from the Nelson Mountain Bike Club’s Belinda Crisp, who donated $750 as a perfectly-timed birthday present. The donation came from the to-

work and all the joy they bring to the riders,” she says. Among the horses is Scotty, Whakatu RDA’s oldest horse who turned 25 on Wednesday. Scotty, an appoloosa that has worked for the RDA for ten years, is used particularly for therapy riders with low stability. “He’s our gentle giant,” says Bex. “He’s broad, stable, safe and extremely gentle, so he can give rides to everyone from little kids to adults. “Some clients have ridden him every week for the four years I’ve been here, he’s very loved.” To learn more about the Whakatu RDA, visit www.rda.org.nz

Snow blankets lakes region Brittany Spencer All winter the region’s alpine businesses have been waiting for the snow and the weekend’s dumping definitely delivered. With over 20cm of fresh powder falling all the way down to the water’s edge at Lake Rotoiti on Sunday, snow covering the Takaka hill and half a metre of fresh powder at Rainbow Ski Area, locals came out of hibernation in their masses, armed with beanies, gloves, boards, toboggans and carrots for making hundreds of snowmen. St Arnaud Alpine Store owner Elaine Richards says, as soon as the snow hit she knew it was going to be a busy weekend. “It was absolutely crazy all day here, we sold over 240 pies and made about 200 coffees on Saturday alone, it’s been insane.” Elaine says the snow is well overdue and locals were definitely making the most of it. “There were hundreds of kids, literally hundreds tobogganing and playing on the subdivision hill beside us, they were everywhere, I’ve never seen it so busy. “It’s amazing to have this amount of snow and it’s so good to see all the kids with their big smiles getting so excited.” Elaine says that on Monday the snow was still amazing. “It’s all the way below the bush line and we’re about to get some more, its absolutely beautiful, there’s snow all over the ground and you can’t see a spot of grass, concrete or road anywhere, everything is covered.” Nelson mother Rebecca Thompson went up to the snow with her partner, four-year-old son and seven-week-old daughter. None of them had ever been in snow before, so Rebecca says it was a very fun day. “My son loved the snow. We made a snowman, had a snow fight and just ran around in the falling snow. My partner and I felt like kids again,” she says. Rainbow Ski Area’s Morgane Le Campion says the fields got over half a metre of snow over the weekend. “On Saturday, we had heaps of people here and a huge amount of snow, so much that we’re having to dig out the doors to some of our buildings, the snow was half way up the doors.” However, road users are urged to take extra caution on the roads as the wintery conditions have already proved treacherous. Road warnings are in place on State Highway 6 with winter dangers from Wakefield to Murchison, snow between St Arnaud and the Rainbow Ski Area, and ice and snow from Takaka to Riwaka.

The consultation process has shown a strong desire for a campground in the valley. The council got a clear message from a public meeting held in February 2015 not to close the campground. At a recent meeting of the Nelson Residents Association, it was unanimously decided to support the call from councillor Tim Skinner to unlock the Brook camp cabins for the benefit of those keen to hire them. With guns, cowboy boots and a sassy-mouthed country girl who’s a bit of a rough diamond, Nayland College’s production of Annie Get Your Gun is set to entertain and humour audiences. The Irving Berlin production tells the tale of real-life sharpshooter Annie Oakley, a backwoods girl plucked from obscurity and thrust into stardom in the Wild West Show where she competes against Frank Butler, the show’s leading man and star marksman.

Annie Get Your Gun follows the story of Annie and Frank as they vie for best shot - and each others hearts. Senior student Casey Crocker is relishing the chance to play the fiery, tomboy Annie, but as a self-professed girly girl says she’s had to do a lot of work. “It’s been an immense amount of fun, I’ve changed the way I walk, talk, sit and stand, it’s great getting into the character and seeing how she progresses to this beautiful woman.” Casey says she was shocked when she got the role, but couldn’t be happier. “I was really shocked, I was up against someone who was really talented, who has had a lot more experience, so as soon as I found out I was absolutely stoked, but I’ve never been more proud of myself.” Preparation for the school’s biennial production began in term two, and since then Nayland College students and staff have worked tirelessly on the show, rehearsing well-known numbers such as ‘There’s No Business Like Show Business’ and ‘Anything You Can Do’. Director Anton Bentley and Musical Director Nigel Weeks have been pulling together senior and junior students for a show that won’t easily be forgotten. The doors will open at 6pm on Friday night with the production kicking off at 7pm with a bang. Shows will also run on Saturday, Sunday (matinee), Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and the audience is encouraged to dress up in their best cowboy costumes. law by keeping the guns onsite. We are happy to receive and store the guns until the family decides what to do. We can buy them off you, we can sell them for you, or we can rehouse them with a license holder of your choice,” says James. nelson College footballers in search of funds Nelson College’s defence of the National Secondary Schools football tournament in August will rely on eight nationalities coming together as one. Burmese, Myanmar, German, Thai, Solomon Island, English, Italian players, a Croatian coach and a Scottish manager will all get thrown into making the 2016 team a success. Manager Dave Tinker says the culture clash means the team has taken time to gel but has improved as the year goes on. “You put Kiwis on a football field and it’s pretty aggressive, route-one type stuff, then you get the Myanmar boys with their slick, intricate passing, Thomas (Amasia) coming over from the Solomon Islands who is an excellent holding midfielder and David who’s been heavily trained in Germany and comes to us with a totally different philosophy.” Thomas was part of the Solomon Islands age-group

setup and is here on a scholarship, says Dave. “I picked him after one night in the country and told him to go get his clothes so he opened his drawer and in it was a pair of football boots and shin pads and that was it, not even a toothbrush. “He only had the clothes he was wearing and that gear.” Nelson College will be up against the top 16 schools in New Zealand and being champions changes the mindset of the opponents, according to Dave. “Christchurch Boys’ High School played us at the start of the season and they put 11 behind the ball and played for a draw. We know that everyone is gunning for us – there is no flying under the radar like last year.”
The team are not only trying to raise the skills on the field, but money off it. Getting to the national tournament in Papamoa is likely to cost around $12,000, even on a shoe-string budget. To help with funding, New Zealand Football has given the team an All Whites jersey signed by the 2016 New Zealand squad that competed at the OFC Nations Cup, which will be won in a raffle. They will also hold a quiz night and auction at Nelson College on August 12. If anyone wants to get involved in supporting the team or buy a raffle ticket for $5 they can contact Nelson College or email ti@nelsoncollege.school. nz. Dave says at this stage he’ll be cooking for 17 people for five nights while on tour. “I hope everyone likes mince and pasta because six games in five days means they’ll need a lot of fuel.”

Call it luck, call it fate, call it timing, Federal's run to the Top of the South hockey glory was timed to perfection. Federal claimed the men's title with a 4-0 win over Tasman at the Saxton Hockey Turf on Saturday. It was the first time they hadn't conceded a goal all season and the first time they had beaten Tasman in two years. Key to the clean sheet was goalie Brad Fisher, who, along with coach Dean Machen, worked out a way to shutdown Tasman's penalty corner threats. "It feels good, the boys played hard and to finally beat this team is something we've wanted," Brad says. "I feel like we've been steadily improving all year and the last couple of weeks have been really good." Federal bear top qualifiers Aotea Kiwi for the first time in 2016 in the semi-finals. Dean, who was wearing his lucky blue shoes that he has worn the past four weeks which has coincided with a four game winning streak, says his young team deserved the outcome, but Brad was special. thing more, I thought our pace didn't let up all game and while they came back at us we defended well, stopped their key players and made the most of our opportunities." Substitute striker Matilda Dawson scored an equaliser to help her team share the points at a damp Jubilee Park. Meanwhile, the Marlborough Mariners beat Tahuna 4-0 in their Tasman Trophy encounter on Saturday. Rugby league: The Richmond Rabbits won the Tasman Rugby League competition 22-20 against Wanderers Wolves at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. The Wolves battled back from a 18-8 halftime deficit to lead with 11 minutes to go, before Rabbits centre Zane Lyttle scored the match winner. Hockey: The Nelson Under-13 A girls hockey team had one win and two losses at a quadrangular tournament in Blenheim. Jacks Ale House power past Waimea College Jacob Page Jacks Ale House produced a dominant second quarter to dispatch Waimea College senior B 3627 in their Senior Grade 2 netball match at Saxton Stadium on Saturday, After the sides went into the first break level at 9-9, Jacks Ale House produced an 11-4 second quarter to take control of the match. Waimea started the stronger and had an early three goal advantage, Their transition from defence into attack was initially too slick for the older Jacks Ale House team to handle. Wing attack Karli Lawson was accurate with possession and the schoolgirls benefited. Jacks Ale House did well to claw their way back to parity. The second quarter was an attacking clinic from the more experienced side. Captain Jane Daubney and goal shoot Jaimea Robinson combined well in the attacking circle and with their defenders winning crucial turnover ball, it was evident the team had hit their straps after a slow start. To their credit, the Waimea shooters did not lack confidence to shoot the longer shot, but when they missed the defensive rebound was turned into a goal by Jacks Ale House. The remainder of the game was decidedly even. Jacks Ale House’s patience with the ball was the main difference. While the margin did not extend much during the second half, Jacks Ale House always looked the more comfortable team.

Suburbs defender and Tasman United signee Daniel Allan was at home in the mud at Saxton Field on Sunday, and he says he’ll be just as comfortable at the back for Tasman United come November. “After 10 minutes I was pretty tired out there, but for me it was like a playground, I love sliding around in the mud,” Daniel says after Suburbs’4-0 win over Universities on Sunday. Daniel will play top level senior football for the first time when the Tasman team debuts in the National League in November, having played for the Nelson-Marlborough Falcons before. He says he’s excited by the amount of local talent that will be involved. “It’s good to see a few local boys coming back into the squad; it should help us when it gets underway. “For me, it will be interesting to see how big the step is. I’m looking forward to the next level of football.” Daniel says he would like to target a Phoenix contract at some point and believed this
