The Southern Link project has been approved and work will begin within three years, Prime Minister Bill English will announce today. The controversial road, which is proposed to run from St Vincent St to Whakatu Drive near the Beatson Rd roundabout, has been the subject of a
business case study by the New Zealand Transport Agency since 2015. Nelson MP Nick Smith says the road met the requirements to proceed and work will begin within three years, if National is re-elected. The project has vocal opposition, most recently from Green Party candidate Matt Lawrey who last week blasted Smith over a lack of news on the case study.

“The answer to Nelson’s congestion is a combination of smarter use of our existing
infrastructure, better public transport, including free travel for under-19s, and more people living in and close to the CBD.” But Smith says the link is “critical” for Nelson. “The Southern Link Highway is critical to Nelson’s future in providing the efficient connection between the region, the city and the port. It also provides the exciting opportunity to transform our beautiful
waterfront into a boulevard for walking and cycling.” The cost of the project has skyrocketed from an estimated $45 million in 2004, up to $135 million. Smith says that’s due to “greater abatement” on St Vincent St and better integration with the inner city roading network. The previous attempt at building the Southern Link was

canned in 2004 when the Environment Court ruled against it. Smith says new rules mean the project is unlikely to face the Environment Court. “The government, and myself as minister, has rewritten the law such that this project is more likely to go to a board of inquiry. We had similar projects like Waterview in Auckland and Transmission Gully in Wellington that were not able to be consented under the old system and both have been consented under the board of inquiry process. That gives me confidence here as well,” he says. Progress Nelson-Tasman chair Craig Dennis, who has been campaigning for the Southern Link, was thrilled with the news. “We are very pleased that National have committed to build-
ing this within the next three years. It’s a huge piece of the jigsaw that’s needed for this region to unlock its potential.” Asked about the impact on Victory, Smith says the project should be viewed in a regional context, not one community. “My commitment to the Victory community is to ensure that they are engaged on the detail so that we can do a very professional job of this. “There is a noisy group of antis that just do not like roads and that’s just an argument. You never get any substantive progress if you say you’re not going to proceed until 100 per cent of people are happy. I can recall the strong critics of the Stoke bypass and the Ruby Bay bypass, what everybody says after these projects are completed is why didn’t we do it years ago?”

It’s the biggest sporting event to come to Nelson, and organisers say we’re ready for it. Nelson will host its first ever All Blacks Test match at Trafalgar Park next year, against Argentina, beating out Christchurch and Hamilton for the spot. The September 8 match will be part of the 2018 Investec Rugby Championship and is thanks to a collaborative bid by Nelson City Council, the Nelson Regional Development Agency and the Tasman Rugby Union, with considerable local private sector investment. It has already been a bumper few years for Nelson sports fans, who have seen the Black Sticks, the Silver Ferns, the Wellington Phoenix, Black Caps and New Zealand Warriors playing in Nelson. Adding an All Blacks test match to the mix will only further prove the region’s ability to host world class events, says chief executive of the Nelson Regional Development Agency, Mark Rawson. “There’s not much bigger scale you can get than this,” he says

We’ve got a good stadium, a good accommodation sector, but just thinking we can do it, and also getting a good team on board, helped to make this happen.” He adds that the economic impact for the region will be “significant” with September not usually being a high visitation
time. Deputy Mayor Paul Matheson reckons that the test match will be the “biggest event to hit Nelson in some years”. He says the council have contributed $300,000 towards the event and will be expecting a return of more than $9 million. “It’s going to be huge - the town will be totally a buzz. “We’ve had Rugby World Cup games here, which were successful, but Nelson has moved ahead dramatically in the last few years - look what’s happened to cricket - we are on the international stage now, and rugby is next.”

The 85-year-old widow calls it her “fishbowl”. She calls it her “river”. Every winter for the last five years her windows have streamed with water. And every year, for the last five years, she has gotten sick. This winter was the worst. She is still trying to kick the pneumonia that filled up her lungs. The pensioner had to go to the doctor three times. “It’s such a struggle to come back from. It’s hard to breathe,” she says. Even though they are only a few years old, her curtains in the Stoke unit crawl with black mould. And she struggles to keep the one-bedroom unit warm with just one wall heater. She lived there with her husband, briefly, until he died about four years ago. “I don’t want to cark-it just because the flat is damp,” she says. Almost every winter morning is spent mopping up the windows. But her home is not a private rental - it belongs to the Nelson City Council which provides accommodation like this to pensioners in need of affordable housing. She is younger and says she can handle the damp, but believes it is not good enough for the older residents. “I’m grateful to have a place like this, but for older people whose health is not 100 per cent, it is not good enough,” Edna says. “They suffer in silence so need people to speak for them. It’s a simple thing and they deserve

NEWS Airport redevelopment on track: Stage one of the Nelson Airport redevelopment is complete. Nelson Airport’s commercial manager Stephen Batt says it’s great to finish the first stage and the construction of the new airport is progressing well. Stephen also says passengers and nearby residents have been very patient despite all the banging and construction noise. Stephen says the biggest part of stage two will be laying the foundations. “There will be progress on the site over the next three weeks and people will be able to see the footprint take shape from the viewing platform, we’ll be laying the floor work down and putting in concrete tracks.” The new $32 million terminal was announced on August 3, 2016, and is expected to take two years to complete. Airport chief executive Rob Evans says the redevelopment will greatly enhance the experience of travellers. Salisbury School given time: Salisbury School has been on the brink of closure but the Minister of Education Nikki Kaye has given the special girls school some more time. On Friday, Minister Kaye announced she will not be making a decision on the school’s future until after the election. The consultation on potential school closure is still in place and if the Minister decides to close the school she says it will not be until at least the end of term two 2018. The school had previously been told that it would remain open until at least the end of the current school year. Salisbury School board chair John Kane says it is pleasing that the school now has an opportunity to work much more closely with the Ministry on potential options for the future of the school. “This is the first time that discussions have been initiated by an Education Minister or Ministry official about how we might stay open, rather than close.”

Rough sleepers defiant in wake of bylaw change Staff reporters Nelson’s rough sleepers are vowing to defy a new bylaw that seeks to remove people from living on the central city streets. The Nelson City Council last week adopted the controversial City Amenity Bylaw, forcing Nelson’s homeless community out of the CBD. It is due to come into effect on September 11. The bylaw regulates what people can do within the city centres
and includes a ban on overnight sleeping. “No person shall sleep or otherwise occupy a footpath or road in the city centre, unless permitted to do so by an authorised officer, during the hours of darkness (being a period of time between half an hour after sunset in one day and half an hour before sunrise in the next day) for a period of two or more continuous hours,” it reads. However, Lewis Stanton, who has
occupied Trafalgar St for many years and has been in a protracted battle with the council over what he sees as his right to protest, is unmoved. “Even if the police get involved there is such thing as a process … when is the system going to solve the problem?” He said he did not have any plans on moving. During the vote on the bylaw, 11 councillors gave their support. Kate Fulton was the sole
councillor opposing the bylaw, saying that banning homeless people from sleeping overnight in the city is inconsistent with the New Zealand Bill of Rights. “We need to be protecting the rights of those people,” she said. “I understand why [the bylaw] has come about and I understand that we are trying to meet the needs of all people living in our society, but I think that it’s just a step too far and I can’t support that.”
Councillor Matt Lawrey was absent when the bylaw was voted on. Council received 319 submissions and of those 268 opposed the bylaw, 36 supported it and 15 did not express a position. Following the public consultation, the requirement that protestors get a permit from council has been removed, instead the council require a “notification” to allow for the organisation of road closures if needed.

Funding boost for School of Music The Nelson School of Music is getting a further $150,000 towards its redevelopment from the Nelson School of Music Endowment Trust. The school’s heritage auditorium was closed in 2013 because of earthquake risk. Since then, the trust has been actively fundraising to strengthen, refurbish and reopen the auditorium, and alongside it to build a new multi-use facility with rehearsal and teaching rooms. Roger Taylor, the school’s board of trustees chairman, the financial support is great news. "The funds will be used to complete the restoration of the external heritage features which were removed in the 1970’s and for the restoration of the Cawthron Organ.” However, Roger says the School’s fundraising team aren’t resting on their laurels as they continue to work towards achieving sponsorship for all new seats in the auditorium. With construction work beginning in September 2016, the $8 million redevelopment is set to be completed in early 2018. Next time you’re walking up the freshly reinstated Days Track, be sure to stop and rest your legs on its new mosaic couch. And it isn’t just any old couch. Rivalling the stunning view out to the Western Ranges and Tasman Bay, it comes complete with the cathedral, Fifeshire Rock, quirky cottages and the Rocks Rd chains – a perfect tribute to Nelson. The couch has been a labour of love, according to Ellie Fijn who is part of a dedicated neighbourhood group that has turned what was a very ordinary couch into a work of art. She says they have spent hundreds of hours placing thousands of pieces of tiles together "like a patchwork quilt". The idea was born in February, with neighbours wanting to celebrate the reinstatement of Days Track. The couch was designed by Rocks Rd artist Colleen Dal-

"So we decided on a 'city to sea' theme, as Days Track is historically one of the ways into town." The couch is made from an actual couch, which has been covered in chicken-wire and then concreted. Then an eight-and-a-half ton digger very carefully moved it to its final resting place. "It was a bit of a bumpy ride, but Fulton Hogan did an
awesome job," Ellie says. Ellie says the last three weeks have been spent doing the physical work of tiling and grouting and they are now putting the final touches on the seat, before it is unveiled at the official opening of the track this Saturday. All the work gone into the couch is voluntary and the only money they have received for it is a grant from Creative Communities. Although, the contributions of cups of tea, biscuits and
words of encouragement have been welcome, she says. "One lovely man asked, 'are you doing it voluntary?', and when we said 'yes', he came back the next day and gave us $100, and said, 'you can spend it on gin or muffins'. "The people passing by have been so positive." And Ellie says the track is definitely being well utilized. "We hope the couch will provide a welcome sit-down for people walking the track, and that they enjoy it."

From a 1920s Model T to American muscle, hotrods, and AC Cobras, over 200 cars came together to take part in the very first Daffodil Rally for Cancer on Sunday. The cars and their owners took off from the Vintage Car Club rooms at Nelson Speedway and toured around the region before arriving at the port for a public display as part of the fundraiser for the Cancer Society Nelson. Event organiser and Nelson Vintage Car Club chairman, Jim Wareing, says he was blown away by the number of club members and public who turned up to take part and support the cause. “We were thrilled, we started off thinking we’d get 150 if we were very lucky, but the club rooms were absolutely packed to bursting point and we had 215 on display at Quay Connect, they were all sandwiched in.” Nelson auctioneer John Walker turned into James Bond for the day, driving his Aston Martin DB7 in the rally. After recently buying the iconic car which is just one of three in the country, John took the car out for its second decent drive as part of the rally. “The drive was great, we got lost momentarily somewhere out Brightwater way, my navigator lead me astray, but we got to see some parts of the area that we hadn’t before and that was brilliant.” John, who is a member of the Nelson

"While it’s a fun rally, it’s for a great cause, one in three of us get cancer, everyone knows someone who
has battled with it so its great to see so many cars raising money to help.” The Daffodil Rally for Cancer raised around $2350 for the Nelson Cancer Society branch on the day. Four new faces have been recruited to the Nelson Fire Service, including three women. Until the new intake was accepted in April, the Nelson paid brigade didn’t have any female firefighters. Nelson Fire station chief Des Irving says the recruits have brought a fresh wave of enthusiasm to the station. “It’s all about diversity, it brings strength to the organisation. Part of that is different ethnic or gender diversity, people from different backgrounds look at problems differently.” Of the 37 paid staff at the Nelson Station, 34 are men. Cath Mulalley, Tom Bate, Karen Peters and Rochelle Hailwood are the four new firefighters for Nelson, although not all are new to fighting fires. Cath worked as a firefighter in London for 15 years before emigrating to Nelson, Rochelle was in the army for ten years, the last three of those spent in the Army fire brigade, while Tom and Ka-
Karen came to the fire service after working as a jailer at the Nelson Police Station for a decade. She says it was time for a change and she’s loving her new job. “I was a fire volunteer and really enjoyed it so I decided to change over. It was hard yakka to get in but it was worth it.” Former Nayland College student Tom was a youth group teacher and volunteer firefighter before making it his career. He says it wasn’t always his dream job but helping save the historic Marsden House Funeral Home as a volunteer firefighter last year made him want to pursue it. “I thought ‘that would be pretty cool to do as a job’ and it went from there. Now I love it, it’s one big family really.” Des says he’s keen for the Nelson station to reflect the community they represent as much as possible. “We’ve developed a strategy of bringing diversity as well as mixing new recruits with seasoned firefighters.” Des says anyone thinking about a career in firefighting, or volunteering at one of the region’s brigades, should visit https://fireandemergency.nz/.

Excitement builds for Shop Nelson and Win With Shop Nelson and Win now underway, local businesses say their customers are more than a little excited at the prospect of winning $5000 cash. Launched on Monday last week, Shop Nelson and Win is a Nelson Weekly promotion, in conjunction with Uniquely Nelson, with fifty Nelson businesses taking part. “It’s good to create some buzz around town and promote shopping in Nelson. It would be nice if someone won $5000 after shopping with us, so come in, shop and win,” says Beggs Music Works owner, Tim Babbage. The Halifax Café has also received great involvement in the promotion from its customers. “I think the box is full already and we’ve probably been through two packs of entry forms, so it is very popular,” says barista Charleigh Marshall. “People are just excited that they’ve got the chance to win $5000 for nothing, by simply purchasing a cup of coffee they can go in the draw.” The competition will finish at the end of September, so to be in with a chance to win, all you have to do is buy something at one of the participating businesses, fill in a quick entry form and drop it in the box. Closing Trafalgar St: There are situations when it is clear that closing a street to motor traffic has clear benefits and Church St may be a good example. However, there are others where this is not so and closing Trafalgar St at the Church Steps is one of them. For a start, it effectively denies people the convenience of a "drop off " at adjacent cafés and social centres but, more importantly, it denies motorists a useful Trafalgar St entry and exit. Inevitably this will force more traffic into Hardy St and increase congestion in it, particularly at the Trafalgar St intersection. Don't do it! Yours faithfully, Bruce Moon. Every few weeks Nelson Weekly sits down with someone interesting for a chat over a pint [or two] of Hop Federation beer and a delicious burger. We call it "Beers, Burgers & Banter" and this week Andrew Board interviewed Tasman Rugby CEO Tony Lewis at Burger Culture on Trafalgar St. Q: Firstly, how on earth did you stitch together a deal to bring the All Blacks to Nelson? I’m a massive reader and I read a book by Mike Tyson and in it he says if you sweat on the little things you achieve nothing and it takes just as much energy as the big things. So when I got back from holiday I wrote down 12 big things that I wanted to kick off, and one of the things was an All Blacks test, as a dream. Two days an email popped across my desk saying they were putting out for tender the All Black tests. The stars aligned. How are you going to fit 21,000 seats in Trafalgar Park? It will be temporary. 6000 south and north, 6000 on east side and on west side, about 5000 seats. Completely different to Rugby World Cup, we want to build it like a soccer stadium in the UK so you’re right on top of the play-

I work with the coaches to ensure they get the players they want and I contract them, within budget and then I let them do their stuff. I think as a region we need to work out what we want. I think this town also needs some infrastructure. I think then events will want to come here. Wouldn’t it be great to have a 10,000 seat
Is rugby in good heart in this region? Within the region Tasman rugby is in the best heart it's been in for a long, long time at senior level. The level of competition is great and has been exceptionally high this year. I think there are a few issues that we need to be aware of. I think we need to get the divison two competition right and fit around the programme of the country clubs, whether it's harvest season or diary times etc. For age-group competitions, we need to realise that the colleges need to work with the clubs. We also have a women's team in the Farah Palmer Cup. As a general rule, healthy and pretty happy.

I think as a city we need to stop whinging about having to go to Auckland for events, get our own stuff together and let's start thinking big. Is this a one-off? No. We don’t see it as a one-off. Former Garin College student Jake Byrom Robinson is living his dream. After studying musical theatre for a year in London, the 19-year-old has now been signed by an agency and, after a two-week break in Nelson, is heading back to London for auditions. “It was absolutely insane,” says Jake, “definitely the best year of my life.” After travelling to the UK last year as part of the NZ Young
Shakespeare Company to train and perform at the Globe, Jake was accepted to study the intensive one-year musical theatre diploma at the prestigious London School of Musical Theatre. “London was a big culture shock, but if you want to be in musical theatre then it’s the place to be.” Jake has been performing since he was eight-years-old, treading the boards for the first time in “Joseph” with the Nelson Youth Theatre. And despite messing up some of his lines on that occasion, he went on to perform in over 20 productions and to win singing

Despite his wealth of experience Jake says he underestimated how much he'd grow and learn in London. “It pushes you to another level,” he says. Now that he has been signed by London theatrical, television and, film agency MR Management, that next level is auditions and hopefully, the stage. “The world of musical theatre is in its second golden age – there are some amazing new shows coming out.” But while back in Nelson, Jake still found time to visit the Nelson Youth Theatre, to share his
knowledge and insights with some of their aspiring actors. “They’ve done so much for me so it’s good to give back,” says Jake. McKenzie Skye-Gardner, Year 10, who recently played Reno Sweeney in “Anything Goes” and Maria in the “Sound of Music”, says she got a lot of notes down and found it really helpful. “I’m going to do a lot of research about future schools,” she says. “Jake’s such a big inspiration.” While Jake hopes to be able to tour in New Zealand, ideally in New Zealand-written shows, for now London is where he needs to be.

"The competition is a real learning experience and I wanted to get the most out of that, so I did a lot of learning via YouTube in advance.” Master Electricians operations manager Bernie McLaughlin, says Nick was a "quiet achiever". “He won his category by a clear margin. He doesn’t say a lot, he just gets his head down and focuses. He did a great job across all the competition modules.” Challenge champions can also go on to enjoy international opportunities, with the titles opening doors to represent New Zealand at WorldSkills Competition events.

Former Nayland College student Nick Johnson has triumphed in the Master Electrician’s Challenge, the electrical industry’s toughest contest for trainees. Nick, 24, was named as winner of the Industrial division of the competition after a gruelling three-day final, held in Auckland last weekend. Ten finalists from across the country faced five rounds of two-hour long modules for the challenge, interspersed with off-site challenging activities and team bonding. Nick is in the third year of his apprenticeship with training provider The Electrical Training Company (etco). He grew up in Nelson, beginning his electrical apprentice-

1. After nearly two months of nominations and votes, Nelsonians have made their choices for the biennial New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Hospitality Awards. Held at the Rutherford Hotel on Tuesday, August 22, the awards night recognised the finest in the region’s hospitality scene with seventeen trophies handed out. This year saw a major change in how the nomination and voting processes were carried out, with everything completed online. “The introduction of online voting definitely saw numbers up on previous years and also captured a
younger age group, so it worked very well,” says hospitality awards committee member, Mishael Sowman. “There was a good array of winners and it was a great night, so we’re looking forward to the next Nelson Hospitality Awards.” For those in the hospitality industry, winning an award is a special achievement. Many who have previously won still have their trophy or certificate on show and now there will be some new venues proudly displaying the reward for all their hard work. While the people’s choice categories were left to the public to decide, industry
awards were also handed out on the night, the winners being decided by a panel of judges. NMIT's Philip Raey and two out of town judges decided the head chef award, while Howard Morris, Quentin Gately and Horst Wellmeyer were judges for Up and Coming Chef of the Year. Hayden Thompson and Emma Markland-Webster decided the barista of the year, local wine critic and writer Neil Hodgson judged the winning beverage list while Peter Morrison, from The Classic Villa in Christchurch, decided the two accommodation sector awards. We all have our favourite when it comes to sausages, be it good ol’ fashioned pork or something more adventurous like venison and merlot. However, Viva La Vaca food cart owner Matias Cacciavillani has teamed up with Craft Beer Depot’s Brandon Turnage and Danny Oyaga to bring local’s a whole new level of sausage flavours, just in time for Father’s Day. “My partner Chelsea came up with the idea and we were talking with Brandon down here at the Craft Beer Depot about doing something cool on Father’s Day, these guys have an awesome place here, very familyorientated as well,” says Matias. Dubbed Nelson’s Inaugural Sausage Fest, Matias put the word out on Facebook, asking people to come up with some exciting sausage flavours. Once the results were in, voting started to determine the top five which will then be cooked and tasted on Father’s Day. Matias has since been working
On Wednesday, Council adopted a bylaw, called the City Amenity Bylaw, which aims to help manage the safety and amenity of our central city and suburban shopping areas. The people of Nelson were asked to make submissions on a draft bylaw and Council received over 319 submissions. Those submissions have helped shape the content of the final Bylaw. Nelsonians value their freedom to use public places as they wish, including the right to protest. However they also recognise that a degree of balance is required, and some private uses of public spaces are not appropriate as they undermine general public enjoyment of an area. The process to develop a bylaw is a complex process, and hopefully the following Q&A sheds a little light on this. What is a bylaw? A bylaw is a rule or regulation that can be put in place by a local authority. This particular bylaw addresses the safety and amenity of our central city – in other words, how does our city look and feel for residents and visitors when they come into our central city. We want people to feel welcomed, comfortable and safe. Businesses need to be able to trade and public areas should be able to be enjoyed by all. What areas does this Bylaw address? This bylaw relates to city amenity, (use of spaces, addressing lighting, and the blocking of retail windows), and to safety (no sleeping overnight without permission, notifying Council of organised events that could impact road users or general public). Why has this taken so long? Many people have asked why this
process has taken so long. Bylaws can only be adopted after they have followed a process set out in legislation - the Local Government Act 2002. The process has several steps and includes developing a Draft Bylaw, advertising the Draft Bylaw, calling for public submissions, holding a hearing so people can speak to the Mayor and Councillors about their submissions, and then considering those submissions and making a final decision on the content of the Bylaw. How does this impact the people currently sleeping without shelter in City Centres? Homelessness in any form or for any reason is not the best outcome for any Nelson citizen’s health, safety or wider wellbeing. A multi-agency approach is needed, and Council has a role as a facilitator. By working with agencies such as the Ministry of Social Development, Police, Salvation Army, and the District Health Board, we can help people find safer and healthier options for accommodation. This bylaw will mean people sleeping on our central city footpaths (or park benches) during night time hours cannot do so unless permission is given. The bylaw also means things cannot block the windows of retailers/stores in the Central City. How and when will this be enforced? The bylaw will commence on 11 September 2017. With existing bylaws a variety of enforcement methods are used, which commence with conversations with those in breach, to legal action for more serious cases. The enforcement process for this bylaw will be the same.

A Richmond couple are teaming up with Victory Vets to offer cutprice de-sexing for large bully, bully-cross or brindle dog breeds, to help reduce the number of unwanted puppies. Deb and Mike, who don’t want their last name published, are funding an offer to have 30 dogs de-sexed for $25 before the end of October to help reduce the number of unwanted puppies. Victory Vets’ practice manager Brendan Hickman says Too Many Puppies is a great initiative and they are happy to help by providing a discounted rate for their services. Brendan says the large mixed bully breeds tend to have big litters which often means there’s too many puppies and not enough homes. Many of these puppies end up at the SPCA and Brendan says Deb and Mike’s initiative is poten-
tially saving a lot of heartache. “These breeds have big litters so it can be a real problem finding homes for all the puppies,” Brendan says. “But you often have nice families with a really nice bully dog but they can’t afford to get it de-sexed, so this initiative solves that problem.” Brendan says bully breeds typically have litters of eight to 10 although he has seen litters up to 15, which is “a lot of puppies to try and give away”. It’s the second year that Victory Vets has partnered with the Too Many Puppies de-sexing programme and Brendan says, “it’s a pretty awesome thing for Deb and Mike to do". Anyone who owns a bully, bullycross or brindle dog and wants to have them de-sexed can contact Deb on 022 0803 599 or go to the website toomanypuppies.co.nz and complete an application form to see if they are eligible for the subsidy.
Locals celebrate National Poetry Day A nationwide celebration had poets and enthusiasts stopping to read and listen to a broad spectrum of poems on Friday. Among them was Nelson Live Poets member, Dean Walker, who read out three poems, including two of his own originals. "I don’t normally read out my own poems but I thought I’d give them a public hearing.” Dean says the inspiration for his poetry comes from the places he travels. National Poetry Day is an annual event throughout New Zealand that has been celebrating poetry and poets for the past 20 years.

Get ready Nelson – the classic songs of ABBA are coming to town. Boasting a cast and crew of over 100 locals, Nelson Musical Theatre’s production of Mamma Mia! opens this weekend. It is the biggest show to come to the Theatre Royal since its redevelopment in 2009. It is also the first time ever that the worldwide smash-hit musical has been produced and staged in Nelson. Principal cast member Ally Hossain, who plays the role of Rosie, says the anticipation for the show is starting to build, with the first show kicking off this Sunday. The musical follows the story of a young woman, Sophie, who invites three of her mother's former lovers to her wedding hoping to find out which one is her father. And, it will feature all the hits of ABBA, including Honey Honey, Money, Money Money, Thank You For The Music, Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen, Super Trouper, Voulez-Vous and many more. Betty Van rooyen was one of the many volunteers that worked to help Nelson break a Guinness World record this daffodil day. The Nelson region turned yellow on Friday, with over 400 volunteers selling daffodils and a 636-strong yellow toy windmill collection that broke a Guinness World record beneath the Cathedral. Cancer Society Nelson manager Michelle Hunt says they managed to raise around $80,000 with a large amount of the money still to come in. After 20 seasons of premier grade netball, Miranda Hart was looking forward to a season on the sideline, watching her daughter play and perhaps filling in once-in-a-while in the lower grades. But the 2017 season hasn’t been a break at all and this Saturday she has a chance to win her fifth premier netball crown after a fill-in game turned into playing the entire season with Price’s Pharmacy. Miranda, who has played for Price’s since she left school in the late 90s, vowed to retire at the end of last season, having won her fourth Nelson Netball premier title. She told coach Mandy Whiting that she was happy to fill in once-in-a-while if needed but didn’t expect the first phone

Mercury took out the Nelson Women’s Club Competition on Tuesday night in their toughest basketball game yet. The team of seven had been undefeated all season but their finals clash against Lynx in the Saxton Stadium was their closest score, finishing 43-41 to take out the competition. “They were a competitive team,” says Nelson Basketball Association general manager Frances Tilly. “They’ve got a mix of old heads and new players, they were able to take the ball inside and Lisa Book is always a threat outside the three as well, they had lots of options.” Team member Rebecca James says the whole team have absolutely loved this season. “We have always enjoyed it and had each others' backs. We have only had a small squad so it has been good for us to have plenty of court time together, but quite hard work as well.” Seasoned athlete Lisa Book and young gun Hannah Crabtree were the two standout players throughout the sea-

and calmness has been amazing to watch.” After dwindling numbers in previous years, the competition, organised by the Nelson Basketball Association, saw an influx of new players this season, around a third of the women hadn’t played in the league before. “This season has been about getting some ladies back on
to the court and giving some younger players exposure to game time in the women's league that will build a stronger group of women players for seasons to come,” says Rebecca. Mercury will be presented with the cup on Tuesday, September 12, after the men's final, also to be played at Saxton Stadium.
FC Nelson has stayed hot on Richmond Athletic’s heels, smashing a hapless Nelson Suburbs 8-0 at Guppy Park on Saturday. Richmond held a two point advantage in the Nelson Bays Football first division heading into the weekend's round, but with the scheduled bye was guaranteed three points. That put the pressure on FC Nelson to continue its good form of late and earn three points of its own with a win. With just two rounds remaining, advantage remains with Richmond - but only just. Elsewhere, Wakefield travelled to Motueka and picked up a win courtesy of a single goal, while Tahuna FC and Nelson College played out a 2-2 draw.

When Kelly McGarry learnt to do tricks on his BMX he had to make his own jumps in the trees behind the Wakefield Domain. Now a bunch of Wakefield men are making sure the next generation inspired by his deeds will have an easier run. Kelly grew up in Wakefield and later attended Waimea College before going on to make a name for himself on the free-riding scene, famously back flipping over the Grand Canyon in the United States during a Red Bull Rampage competition. His life was tragically cut short in early 2016 when he suffered a cardiac arrest while riding in Queenstown, aged just 33. Despite his world-wide fame, Kelly often made his way back to Nelson to volunteer at various events and it was during one of his trips home that a group of guys in his home town asked him if he’d be keen to help redesign a small pump track for bikers in Wakefield. He agreed just months before he passed. The group – including some of Kelly’s oldest friends – decided to expand their vision for the dirt track, build a second track out of asphalt and a skate park all-in-one complex. A naming competition was put to the students of Wakefield School, where the name McGazzaland was picked, after his nickname in the riding scene, McGazza. So far $13,000 has been pledged to the project, $10,000 from the Kelly McGarry Foundation and $3100 from the Nelson Bikefest event that was wound up earlier this year.
Matt Goodall, a close friend of Kelly, says McGazzaland isn’t a memorial to Kelly but a tribute to him. “We want families to be able to come down here and enjoy it and have fun. And if they are inspired to take it further, then great.” He says the Tasman District Council is “very supportive” of the project but no council funding or consent has been granted yet. He says the entire project would cost somewhere between $100,000 and $200,000, with most of that for the asphalt track. Another group member, Dan Shallcrass, says there is enough in the kitty to complete the dirt pump track, something they are hoping to start in October. “We think the dirt track will take a month or so to complete, then we will use that to promote the project to do the asphalt track.” Matt says Kelly would have loved the concept. “He’d be all over it. He’d be saying ‘where was this 20 years ago?’ Kelly was just like you and me, he didn’t come from wealthy parents or anything special. He just wanted something and went and took it.” The group say, once finished, McGazzaland will be a community space and will include picnic tables and drinking fountains. “We visualize it being a place where a family could come down, have their fish and chips, while the kids hack around on the track. We want it to be a community hub.
