A Nelson restaurant is being investigated after it was alleged to have mistakenly served a cake laced with synthetic cannabis to a group of diners, leaving six of

them in hospital. A dinner reservation was made for nine people at a Nelson restaurant and bar in early July to celebrate the birthday of one of the diners. The woman who reserved the

table was told when making the booking that they were entitled to a complimentary birthday cake. When she enquired about the cake offer after their meal, the waitress said she wasn’t sure but went to the kitchen and came

back to confirm there was a cake for them. It was promptly delivered, with candles, before being cut and served up to the guests. Diner Nicola Nish says the cake “tasted weird”.

Downstairs in the special baby unit, at Wellington Hospital, her new-born daughter was fighting for her life after she was born with a missing valve to her heart, as well as a hole in it. Upstairs in intensive care unit her mother was fighting for her life after a massive aneurism. Ten months on, the Richmond mother is all smiles as she speaks about her family. “I’m just grateful for what I do have. I have a beautiful daughter and I still have my mother.” Her mother suffered some brain damage after the aneurism which has affected her short-term memory. Kayla says the aneurism was one of the biggest seen at Wellington Hospital and it’s just amazing that she is still alive. “A normal aneurism, they do five or six coils to

hours after eating the cake, one of the group’s sober drivers began to feel numbness down the side of his arm and that his heart was beating a lot faster than normal. Fearing a major health problem, his wife Nicola called an ambulance. Tests at Nelson Hospital confirmed that he wasn’t having a heart attack but that he tested positive for synthetic cannabis. By the end of the night, another five members of the group were hospitalised with the same symptoms. All tested positive for the drug that was made illegal in 2014. The other three diners either didn’t eat the cake or rode the symptoms out at home. Results of the positive urine tests were handed to Nelson Police to investigate by Nelson Marlborough District Health Board. Police were unable to comment on how the investigation was proceeding at the time of print. Nicola says she is disgusted with what happened. “One of the other sober drivers was on her way home and had to pull over because she was getting blurred vision and a pound-

It was really dangerous and could have been much worse.” The owner of the restaurant was out of town and unavailable for comment on Monday. Nelson Weekly has decided not to print the name of the restaurant until it can speak with its owner.

Hira School prepares for fundraiser Hira School’s annual fund-raiser, the Valley to View Family Fun Day, is set to be held on Sunday, August 28. Dun track can’t be fully restored

Andrew Board/Kate Russell The Dun Mountain Trail may be too damaged to allow vehicle access on it again with the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Trust now looking at alternatives. The sanctuary built its pestproof fence below the 150 year old trail last year which caused the trail to slip during a heavy rainfall event in March 2015. The trust was able to repair the trail for walkers and bikers, but geotechnical experts have told them there isn’t enough bench left to reinstate the trail to accommodate vehicle access, without a significant engineering solution. That could include a boardwalk structure with pilings down to the bedrock. The trust’s acting chair Derek Shaw says the trust is now exploring its options. One option involves using the fence bench below the trail. In an email passed on to Nelson Weekly, Derek Shaw wrote: “The trust is exploring with council whether it might be the most practical solution in the future for motor vehicle access to the Third House area to be

Derek told the Weekly that the trust has been in contact with parties that require occasional vehicle access to Third House to understand whether the fence track could meet their needs. He says that most parties have

now indicated that they would prefer to use the fence track because it provides better track access. “The reality is that our only solution at the slip site is to build an elaborate structure with deep piles that would not retain the historic nature of the Dun Mountain Railway formation. “We know that this isn’t going to please the people who want to see it reinstated for vehicles, either.” Derek says the trust will continue to explore alternatives for the track, and they are working on preparing a report for Nelson City Council.

Payton was only born at Wellington Hospital because Kayla and her husband Andrew were there to support her mother, who was transferred to the capital for treatment after her aneurism. The stress of her stricken mother brought on an early labour and Kayla gave birth four weeks early. It turned out to be a blessing with Payton requiring urgent specialist care that Wellington can provide, but Nelson Hospital cannot. “When she was about ten hours old Payton turned blue in front of the midwife, so she just sounded

the alarm and rushed our baby away,” says Kayla. “We were like ‘what’s going on?’ We didn’t see her for a few hours and Andrew and I got called into this room where there were probably about 15 doctors and nurses. Knowing that mum was upstairs fighting for her life, they said, ‘look, we hate to do this, but your baby has a hole in her heart and unfortunately she was born with a very rare heart condition called type 1 truncus arteriosus’.” That meant that Payton needed open heart surgery to insert a new valve. But, because she was only five pounds when she was born, the doctors wanted to wait until she had put on more weight. The next ten days involved Kayla trying to feed her daughter as the doctors continually monitored

At every open heart surgery there is a 50/50 chance she could not come out of it.” Kayla says the reason that Payton was first given the “miracle child” title is that she didn’t think she could carry children. “The fact that she is even here is amazing.” The past year has been an emotional battle for Andrew and Kayla, but she says she “doesn’t have time for a breakdown”. “My mum needs me, Payton needs me, Andrew needs me. I think Andrew and I are also positive people so we look at the bright side of things. Mum is here, Payton is here, what else could you ask for? “There are a lot of families worse

off than we are, that’s why we don’t do the ‘poor us’. I think if anything, it’s made our family stronger.” And helping the Simpson’s smile has been Heart Kids, a national charity that provides support for 2800 children and families each year. Stoke may lose bank Locally Owned and Operated

Westpac Stoke could be facing closure by the end of the year – but several Nelson organisations are fighting to save it. The branch is just one of 19 across the country that were earmarked for closure last week. The Takaka branch is also on the chopping block. The bank, located in Putaitai St, is used frequently by elderly customers, who prefer to have face-to-face contact. If it closed, it would mean they would have to travel to either Nelson or Richmond to do their banking. If the Takaka branch were to close, bankers would have to travel to Motueka for services. First Union Nelson organiser Rachel Boyack says they will be fighting to keep both banks in the region. “It is stressing for the workers, but for the customers too,” she says. “The staff at the Stoke branch are very connected to their customers

and while some members of staff have been guaranteed new roles, it is a minority.” Rachel says the Union have found the announcement “really disappointing” and have had very little information from Westpac. “The bank made nearly $1 billion in profit last year and $465 million just in the last six months, so it’s not like it’s an organisation that needs to make cuts to stay afloat,” she says. A statement from Westpac last week hinted that an increase in online transactions had initiated the closures. A Westpac spokesperson stated: “Currently, more than 85 percent of service transactions with us take place outside of a branch. In addition, over the last five years, online transactions increased by 61 per cent and in the last year online logins via a mobile device have increased by 33 per cent.” But the closure would be a double blow for elderly Stoke residents with the Work and Income (WINZ) office for Stoke seniors

Nelson Greypower President Gordon Currie says, if it shut, it would have an “extremely big effect” on Stoke’s senior citizens. “We’ve discussed it with the Union and have offered our support. It’s not as though Westpac is struggling – I can’t understand the reason for wanting to shut

it. It’ll be a big loss of service to Stoke,” he says. Sue Tilby, manager of Age Concern Nelson Tasman, says she will be making her concerns clear to Westpac as well. “It is very disappointing,” she says. “Stoke is primarily an area of older people and they aren’t

as able to get around or access technology as easily. They are taking away their rights and I’ll be doing something about it.” Nelson mayor Rachel Reese has also expressed her concern over the possible closure, and says she will be having “constructive discussions” with Westpac representatives in the coming weeks. “It is critical that decisions are made at a local level with good quality information, rather than at a one size fits all at national level,” she says. Rachel Boyack says a consultation process is now underway, with a decision expected on the closures in September or October. “We’ve got the next couple of weeks to be involved in the consultation process,” she says. “The Union has made a submission, and we encourage customers to do so as well – by contacting Westpac directly – ringing them, writing a letter, or taking a letter into the Stoke branch.”

Big Brekkie to provide inspirational breakfast

Round up your co-workers and prepare to be inspired. The Business Breakfast Club Charitable Trust is hosting its latest Big Brekkie next Wednesday, August 24, with the highlight a talk from Cam Calkoen. Cam was born with cerebral palsy but has overcome the odds to represent New Zealand in athletics. His story has seen him speak in front of audiences around the world and focuses on goal setting, overcoming setbacks and challenges, and communication and networking. The breakfast is for anyone who feels they would get something out of it and proceeds raised from the breakfast, and a charity auction that will follow it, will go to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopeter. Trustee Craig Peattie says they'd like business owners to send employees who they think would get something out of it. "It's good for a bit of enthusiasm and enlightenment, how to get past adversity." The breakfast runs from 7-9am at the Rutherford Hotel in Nelson. Family left with 'nothing' Kate Russell The Nelson community is rallying to help a family left with nothing after their home was gutted by fire on Sunday morning. Fire services were called to the Waimea Rd property, just opposite the Caltex service station, at around 8:15am, with the fire being extinguished by 10am. Fire service southern communications shift manager,

Tim Reynolds, said all the occupants were safely evacuated from the rental property and treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, but the house and a parked car on the driveway were “significantly damaged.” One of the occupants, who spoke to Nelson Weekly, but did not want to be named, said there were five of them in the house, including a oneyear-old child. “Everybody had a check over with the ambo team and all

good, but everything in the house is gone,” they said. But just hours after the fire, a driver from Nelson City Taxis, who was around when the incident happened, put out a call to start a collection for the family. A donation box has been set up at taxi company’s office on Selwyn St, with a handwritten note asking people to “give a little for this cause.” A spokesperson from Nelson City Taxis says they have al-

ready received a collection of money to pass on to the family, and they have also had a great response from posting it on Facebook. The house occupant says the community support so far has been “overwhelming.” “Thank you to all who have taken their time out for us.” People can also email manysmiles2give@gmail.com to donate items or money. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

SIRENS SMASH OPPONENTS: True to their name, Nelson’s Sirens of Smash obliterated their opponents on Saturday night’s roller derby. On their home turf, the Sirens smashed Whanganui’s River City Rollers 227-158 at the Nelson Skating Rink. Siren Jo ‘Cujo’ Davis says the rollers went hard and it wasn’t an easy win. “We got away in the beginning but they came back in the second half and made up a lot of points, so it was definitely a challenge.” The Sirens next game is on September 24, at the Nelson Skating Rink in Tahuna against Hawkes Bay’s Bay City Rollers. Kate Russell The nominations are in, and four candidates will be competing for the Nelson City mayoralty in this October’s local body elections. Incumbent mayor Rachel Reese is joined by three-term councillor Pete Rainey, Richard Omaston and Graeme O’Brien - who has also put his name in for council. Altogether, 28 nominations have been received for 12 seats at the council table, and all current councillors except for Mike Ward are standing again. It is the lowest numbers of candidates in recent times with 34 in 2013, and 37 in 2010. Former councillor Mel Courtney is looking to make a comeback and Derek Shaw is looking to get back on the council table for another term after narrowly missing out last time. Others standing are: Stephen Alder, Heather Bryant, Bill Dahlberg, Sunny Daly, Cynthia McConville, Stuart Walker, Glen Daikee, Trudie Brand, Derek Nees, Cindy Batt, Kevin Gardener, Rosina Cornelissen and Robbie Kavanagh. Kindra Douglas from the Victory Community Centre, and Natureland Trustee Mike Rutledge will also be standing. The current councillors who are standing again are: Luke Acland, Ian Barker, Ruth Copeland, Eric Davy, Matt Lawrey, Paul Matheson, Brian McGurk, Tim Skinner, Gaile Noonan and Kate Fulton. The voting period starts on Friday 16 September 2016. Election day is Saturday 8 October 2016 and voting closes at midday on that day.

Trampoline park bouncing into Tahuna

Brittany Spencer If summersaults and sunshine are your thing, Tahuna is going to be even more fun this summer. Pro Kart’s Nick Fowler is in the process of introducing a new outdoor trampoline park to Tahunanui. The new addition is set to be around 600m2 and packed with trampolines and activities in the spot between the beach, Pro Karts and the Megaslide. “It’s going to be really colourful with people jumping everywhere and a beautiful landscape, it’s the perfect place to have it,” says Nick. With 50-60 trampolines to jump between and plenty of additional activities, Nick says it’s going to be a great activity for Nelson. “We’ll have basketball hoops where you can slam dump from the trampolines, we’ll have a dodgeball area where you can bounce around trying not to get hit, airbags so people can practice summersaulting, plus we’ll run our bungy trampoline, climbing wall and bring in a whole lot of bouncy castles, so it should be a pretty cool place to come to.” Nick says it’s all up to the council now, but everything is on track and approval should go through before the end of the fortnight. “We have been planning and in talks with the council for close to 12 months and my final submission goes to council this week, which should then get the big green tick. “We’re really excited, obviously there’s still a lot of work to do but it’s great to get to this point and gear up to go to the next phase.” The outdoor trampoline park is set to be up and bouncing in time for Christmas and the silly summer season. I know I struggled like hell with the decision to vaccinate my kids. Any good parent should research anything manufactured they're giving their child. That's called good parenting. Tight-knit group donates to kids Brittany Spencer Reporter

Elma Turner Library’s knitting group have been knitting up a storm in the name of charity. The group that started two months ago as eight women knitting peggy squares for Plunket in the library, has grown to a regular group of up to 22 women. The charity-driven group has created everything from blankets to booties, beanies, singlets and vests, and last Thursday they handed over 42 items to Plunket’s Jodie Millan who says she is very grateful. “I’m overwhelmed by how much they’ve done and it’s so exciting that they’ve got a whole little community getting together and knitting for us. “Our parents love it, and it’s so cold at the moment so it’s great to be able to give them something new and warm.” Community Librarian Viv Rounce started the group on World Knit in Public Day two months ago thinking it was a nice idea, but she had no idea it would grow this big. “Starting a programme like this, you never really know how popular it's going to be but this has re-

School opens innovative Learning Centre

A new classroom opened at Westmount School near Richmond shows that education has "moved on from the lecture-style classes, wooden tables, hard chairs, blackboards and a 'sit up straight and face the front' approach, to a more flexible style of learning". The Exclusive Brethren School's new Learning Centre was officially opened by Nelson MP Nick Smith on Friday. The innovative classroom has a range of colour-coded learning spaces for collaborative, semicollaborative and focused work, and is designed to encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning. Head student Tina Lewis says they had been working in smaller areas without clearly defined zones, which often resulted in "conflicting conversations" between students in the quiet and collaborative learning areas. Tina says the new Learning Centre will eliminate that conflict and also provide an inspirational

However, Hugo says the Learning Centre is only one part of the learning equation for the school's 150, year three to year 13 students. He says the school also benefitted from having exceptional staff and students who helped create a good learning environment. Nick praised Westmount's decision to open an innovative new classroom saying "there is no better investment that society can make than the education of our young". He also welcomed the contribution that Westmount makes to the "diversity of schools in this country".

Rookie rowers tame Maitai River Jacob Page

Rowing on the Maitai River, four crews of rowing eights comprising of doctors and lawyers did battle for professional supremacy. The fundraising event, which was organised by the Masters Rowing Club of Nelson, was won by the doctors in a 300m dash down the river. Organiser Sandy Knight says many of the competitors had only been on the water once or twice and had a basic learn-torow course. “The key objective of the event

was to introduce the sport to people and allow people to see the club and get used to it. Conditions on the river were surprisingly good despite morning rain and the club hoped to add to its 40 masters rowers who are over 27-yearsold. “These rowers have had a very short learn-to-row course. For most of them this means a basic technique session on an indoor rowing machine, and one or two training rows in an eight-oared boat. “Many of the participants have never rowed at all, a few

more have not rowed since they were at school, and there a few among them with extensive rowing experience. Equipment, coaching and coxes are all supplied by the Nelson Rowing Club,” Sandy says. “This is the ultimate team sport,” says club captain Kevin Strickland. “We have to work together as a crew even to get the boats out of the shed, let alone get them moving on the water. Kevin says rowing is less punishing on your joints than most sports and allows for a decent cardio workout on the water.

sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz Nelson motocross rider Max Singleton often sits in class and “daydreams “about the horrific farm accident which he has recovered from surprisingly quickly. On February 3, the 14-year-old was stacking hay on the back of a horse float while his dad Tony was in the car. While Tony wasn’t reversing much quicker than “walking speed” when Max jumped off the back of the float and tripped over due to him wearing his Dad’s gumboots which were too big, Max was soon pinned underneath by an axle. “The axle of the float was on top of me,” he says. “I felt the resistance with the automatic transmission – that was Max curling up underneath the machine. “I saw the owner of the farm waving his hands and, as soon as I couldn’t see Max, I tweaked that he must have been under there,” Tony says. “I remember trying to call out for help but the axle was crushing my chest, so I couldn’t yell very loud,” the Nelson College

Max then lost consciousness as Tony rushed to move the float forward to release some of the pressure. “He had a torso crush and the fluid pressure went into his head,” Tony says. “Initially the paramedics thought it was a

head injury because his head blew up and you couldn’t see his nose, his eyes were sticking out, but that was from the fluid being trapped and not being able to go anywhere else,” Tony says. Max was transported by Life Flight aeroplane to Wellington Hospital where he en-

tered intensive care for four days. “I had a multiple broken ribs which had gone into my lungs and I had two vertebrae which I had broken a bit, a broken collarbone, pelvis and stretched the ACL in my knee,” Max says. Doctors told Max he would not be able to compete in Motocross for one year because of the ACL injury. However, Max’s love of mountain biking had strengthened his knee and the fact he was only 14 and he was growing into his body meant he had room to recover faster. “If he was 16 or 17, it would have probably required surgery to fix,” Tony says. Max competed at the Nelson Motocross Championships last month and will do the same this Sunday at the Nelson Secondary School Championships at Valley 88. “My motocross fitness is not there yet, it’s hard to maintain my form for three laps without getting tired,” Max and Tony agreed they were both more careful when working now and take their time doing jobs. They also say they owe a lot to the medical professionals who helped Max. “When the Life Flight envelope came in the mail for a donation, it’s fair to say we did it quickly,” Tony says.

The striker had been playing his football in America and found international notoriety when his bicycle kick goal for Xavier University landed him on ESPN’s flagship show SportsCenter. Trael, a 23-year-old centre, is in his second year as a Mako, while Jesse, a 24-year-old fullback, is in his first year. The self-described best friends, played together for the first time in the Makos backline during Friday’s 2414 preseason win over the Manawatu Turbos. Trio reach kayaking tipping point Jacob Page

Spurred on by Luuka Jones’ silver medal at the Rio Olympics, three Nelson teenagers are keen to get more people kayaking on the rivers of the region. Nelson College Year 9 pupil Rebecca Taylor has returned from a week at the New Zealand Kayak School, while Nayland College pupils Alana James and Indigo Levett have found their interest levels in the sport growing over the past year, Rebecca has learnt skills like combat rolls, where you right the kayak after being knocked over unintentionally. Indigo says being one with nature and being able to explore was a key to her enjoyment. “You have to work with the river and the way it’s flowing,” Indigo says. “The excitement of going down the rapids or getting into the breaks where you can go out for a

swim, it’s great fun,” Alana says. “It’s alike anything if you are confident then you’ll get better the more you do it,” Rebecca says. “I’d say reading a river is more important than strength,” Indigo says. The Nelson Canoe Club will hold a beginners course in late September, which starts with three pool sessions then a couple of river trips in the following weeks. All three girls agree the Nelson and Tasman region is fortunate to have so many rivers of vary degrees of difficulty for water sports enthusiasts to enjoy. They believe kayaking is something that offers fun and variety. The Nelson Canoe Club is holding a movie night at Elim Community Centre on Wednesday, August 24, at 7pm. The movie called ‘Rivering’ gives an insight into kayaking on New Zealand Rivers. Tickets are sold at the door and are $5 for adults and $2 for children.

Cyclists prepare for elite race Simon Bloomberg Tasman Wheelers top road cyclists had a testing hit out before the third round of the Calder Stewart Elite series in Nelson this weekend when they raced in the final round of the Ray White Richmond Winter series around the Hope circuit on Saturday. And veteran Chris Nicholson showed he still has the legs to compete against the South Island's elite riders in the Calder Stewart when he secured the winter series with a nine-race total of 95 points.

Chris was super-consistent, winning one race and finishing in the top three in another seven to edge out his Fresh Choice Richmond Pomeroys Tasman Wheelers Calder Stewart teammate Mikey McCallum (87 points) and Chris Heywood (69 points) - Finn Black won Saturday's race which finished with a climb up the Aniseed Hill. Josh Ryan won the B grade series with 80 points, William Stein won C grade with 71 points while Geoff Gudsell won D grade on 99 points. Karen Fulton won the women's

winter series, winning four races for a total of 103 points to hold off Susie Wood on 80 points and Tania Radman on 71. Karen's daughter Shaane was fifth on 49 points from just six races. Karen will be riding for the Fresh Choice Richmond Pomeroys Tasman Wheelers women's team in the Calder Stewart series on Saturday. The 124km Calder Stewart men's race starts at Upper Moutere School at 10am on Saturday, while the masters start at 10.35am and the women at 10.40am.
