The last time more parks were added was five years ago, when

Nelson parents are backing local primary school teachers as they prepare to take full-day strike action tomorrow. Around 500 local teachers and principals are standing up for better pay and conditions, with many planing to rally at the top of Trafalgar St from 11am. Earlier this month, the The New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI) Te Riu Roa announced the full-day strike action following an online ballot. It’s the first strike in 24 years for educators. The decision to strike comes after NZEI and the Ministry of Education agreed to enter mediation over collective agreement negotiations last month. The Ministry of Education had offered to increase pay, in the majority of cases, by between 2.2 and 2.6 per cent a year for three years. The offer was a far cry from the 16 per cent increase teachers felt was needed to retain and recruit staff. Although the strike will place extra pressure on parents and

Staff have been at the school gates sharing key messages, handing out information and answering questions. Parent of six, Ruth Rodley, says her family has become close to the teachers of Tahunanui School. “We want nothing but the best for them. We’ve already had three children go there and have three more still there. “I think teachers deserve to be paid better, they do such an amazing job. The teachers at our school have had to deal with some pretty hard students

and I don’t think they get the credit they should for all the time and effort they put in. I fully support them.” Clifton Terrace School principal Rob Wemyss says he has had only positive comments. “I feel that the community realise ‘it is time’. We can only do what we can with what we have got. We do require people into the profession to assist the growing needs we are faced with on a daily basis,” he says. “Things need to change, and I think there is a realisation that for this to happen the government needs to come to the party.” The rally for teachers and principals is on tomorrow, August 15, at the Cathedral Steps from 11am – 1pm.

Top of Trafalgar to be car-free for longer After a successful trial last summer, Upper Trafalgar Street will once again be closed to traffic this year - but this time for a longer period. Nelson City Council has approved the temporary closure the street, Selwyn Pl to Hardy St, from 8 November until 30 April next year. Based on the positive results from the last trial, from 1 December 2017 until 31 March 2018, councillors unanimously approved a repeat closure. The closure period will include the Armistice Day centenary celebrations on 11 November, Easter Monday and Anzac Day 2019. The estimated project cost for summer closure 2018/19 is $73,000 which includes operational costs as well as extra tables, games and activities, and new umbrellas.

MAYOR GETS A PAY RISE: Nelson mayor Rachel Reese is set to receive a $6803 pay rise thanks to a review by the Remuneration Authority. Each year the authority reviews public servant salaries, but this year’s 5.2 per cent increase for the mayor comes after an “extensive twoyear review” of local governments around the country. As a result of the review, the authority addressed the allowances and expense reimbursement available to elected members. Rachel’s remuneration will rise from $131,066 to $137,869 while her deputy will receive a raise from $60,984 to $61,673. Councillors salaries will also increase from $40,452 to $41,115. The authority sets the pay annually for key office holders, including local government representatives, MPs and judges.

Kids inspire flag project Kate Russell The creative juices were flowing at Tahunanui School on Friday afternoon as around 100 kids drew down their ideas of what they love about Nelson. Beaches, walking tracks, sunshine and trees were all there - even the seven starts of Matariki. The imagery will be the inspiration for the design of 30 giant flags, which will adorn Founders Heritage Park in October for the Nelson Arts Festival. Award winning Auckland multi-media artist Miranda Brown was in town last week running a series of school and public workshops. She will take away all the different ideas from the community and use them create the flags. The two-time winner of World of WearableArt has work held in collections at Te Papa and some of her flags have appeared at WOMAD, Splore and on the Auckland waterfront. As well as Tahunanui School, Miranda held workshops at St Josephs, Nelson Central, Riwaka, Ranzau and Mapua. There were also community workshops at Founders Park. “I think we’ve had about 500 - 600 people participate,” she says. “Nelson has really embraced the project, and I’m getting so much local knowledge.” Councillor Gaile Noonan, chair of the community services committee, says The Flag Project is a great opportunity for locals to the tell the story of Nelson’s long connection to the arts. “Knowing the flags are being inspired by Nelsonians and how they feel about our city really gives the flags a sense of belonging.” After the festival, the flags will be gifted to the city and reused for other events.

Heart of Nels Sara Hollyman and Charles Anderson In 2009 the then Nelson Mayor Kerry Marshall launched a bold vision for the city. He said that we should not take the CBD for granted. “We could, and can, make it better,” he said. “Or, by a few thoughtless actions or by neglect, we could make it worse.” There were examples, he went on, of once thriving city centres that have been allowed to decline. “That is not going to happen in Nelson.” Nine years on and many of the same conversations that were happening then are still going on now. Many of the same headaches, concerns and aspirations are also swirling. Kerry was launching the Heart of Nelson strategy, which was a framework for developing the City Centre and its surrounds over the coming decades. It cost $150,000 and included 104 initiatives to improve the

central city. More than 170 people submitted on the plan. It was to be a community project that everyone had a stake in. While the council has executed several of the projects identified, particularly around developing networks between the city to the sea. But in the CBD there are plenty more to go. One of the major priorities cited was developing the eastern edge of Montgomery Sq and Bank Lane into a userfriendly multi-purpose innercity pocket park. This was designed specifically for families and young children. Despite being a “high prior-

An upgrade to Church St was initially suggested under this plan but that was shelved last month after costs escalated. More trees were destined for Trafalgar St, but these were halted after being challenged by business owners who didn’t want car parks being taken away. There were also aspirations to create a playground close to the CBD. The idea was to create a space where people wanted to be and reflected Nelson’s identity. One was supposed to be put in place at Rutherford Park but that has not happened. At the meeting suggestions were made, such as more closing more streets to allow more happening zones in town, but nothing was done. Spotlight on the CBD is a Nelson Weekly series looking at the central city. Next we look at parking in the city.

Retailers voice CBD concerns Sara Hollyman Around 60 business owners from the CBD gathered at the Suter Art Gallery last week to present ideas and priorities to council on how to fix the city centre. Mayor Rachel Reese addressed the group that has "a lot of skin in the game” and discussed what Nelson will be into the future. She said Nelson needs arts, culture and civic places and that the city development is a key priority. Some spoke of the need for better conference facilities, while others voiced concerns over the lack of maintenance of Trafalgar Street’s trees, that have now grown so high you cannot see the Christ Church Cathedral from the inner city. Shine owner Jo Menary made a simple suggestion for the empty store fronts. "I think that landlords of these empty shops should be made to beautify it in some way … it would just take away that look of being just an empty shop ... we need to change the perception of things. Why aren’t we focusing on the stores that are open? This is where the focus needs to be.”

Mittens for Victory kids Locally Owned and Operated

Every Tuesday morning, a junior classroom at Victory Primary School has two special visitors. They come and listen to the children practice their reading, and recently knitted each child in the class a pair of mittens. They are the much-loved school grandmas, Jean Higgins and Nola Stanton. The two friends began volunteering at the school seven years ago, when Jean’s granddaughter started teaching there. “We love it,” says Jean. “The children are always so keen to read all the time and we enjoy seeing their progress.” But a few months ago, Nola was house-ridden with a leg injury and couldn’t make her weekly visits. So, she decided to help in another way. “I thought that I could knit some mittens for the children. Just a nice little something to keep their hands warm. It gave

Nola knitted a total of 24 pairs of mittens and Jean helped to sew them up. “The children were very excited, and they all got to choose their own colour,” she says. Teacher Jane Lawson says out of the 22 children in the class, 14 are ESOL (English as a

second language) students. “Some of the children don’t have their extended family here, including grandparents, so it’s a really positive experience for them,” she says. “It’s also engaging the community and teaching children to relate to different ages. And they love the mittens - some of the children have worn them every day.”

Harley dealership rides into Nelson After almost two years in negotiation, Harley Davidson is coming to Nelson. The American bike manufacturer has appointed its newest distributor, with Filco Motorcycles now an official dealer. Dealer principal Dave Filer says he was “absolutely rapt” and is aiming at having it all set up in their local Stoke business by the end of October. “We have all been working very hard to make this happen and the feedback we have is that there is a huge gap in the local market for the Harley brand and, in particular, back up.” Dave and his team will bring not only factory-trained technicians to the market but a good supply of genuine spare parts and, of course, the very popular Harley Davidson

clothing and accessory range. “We now hope we will soon remove that long journey and wait for the Harley owners and they can deal with us on a local level,” Dave says. Currently, the closest dealership is in Christchurch. Dave will soon head to the Harley Davidson conference in the United States, where over 5000 worldwide dealers meet to catch up with the latest developments. Dave is also sending two of his mechanics over to Harley Davidson’s Australasian headquarters in Australia to begin their factory training on Harley Davidson. “Harley Davidson is an iconic brand and with Nelson Tasman district having more bikes per head than anywhere in New Zealand we see a very bright future for our bikes,” Dave says.

I am proud of our ancestors, both Maori and European, who signed the Treaty of Waitangi founding our country, but it must never be used to silence free speech. The Treaty is no substitute for the Bill of Rights that guarantees basic freedoms for all New Zealanders, regardless of ethnicity. Her second reason for banning Dr Brash was the risk of protest and violence. This is a cowardly excuse. She cited the letter she had received from an anti-Brash activist on campus. If speeches

are to be cancelled after a threat of violence, we effectively provide a thug’s veto to free speech. People have a right to free speech and a right to protest but nobody has the right to commit or threaten violence. The third argument of Professor Thomas was that she and other staff at Massey University did not support Dr Brash’s views against separate Maori representation on Councils and aligned it with hate speech. Most New Zealanders do not support separate Maori Council seats and if that is to be labelled hate speech we are getting into very dangerous territory. It is particularly concerning that

Nelson Matters Massey University’s decision last week to ban Dr Don Brash from speaking on campus was outrageous. It is part of a worrying global trend of public authorities wanting to censure what we hear. We need to reassert our rights of free speech including for those whose opinions we disagree. The Don Brash example at Massey was particularly galling. He had been invited by the University’s Politic Society to speak on his experiences as a former Reserve Bank Governor and Leader of the Opposition. Massey University’s Vice Chancellor Professor Jan Thomas, gave three reasons for banning

The Young Nationals were denied a stand during orientation week by the Students Association despite Labour and the Greens having a presence in previous years. The issue is before the Human Rights Commission. I hope they conclude that all political parties should

be allowed on campus and that students should be free to choose whomsoever they want to join. Free speech is not an absolute. People do not have a right to incite violence, defame others or cause harm by falsely crying fire in a crowded theatre. But we need to be very cautious of any limits on constraining free expression of political opinions. I concur with our High Court’s view that “Freedom of Expression is the first and last trench in the protection of liberty.”

When teacher Victoria Johnston offered up being a “Tidy Kiwi Kid” to the students of Nelson Intermediate as part of their Fridays, she wasn’t sure how it might go down. “Every Friday students can do music or art or the gym as part of their ‘talents’,” she says. “So I was a bit unsure that anyone would be interested, considering how many other fun things there are to do.” She needn’t have worried. On Friday almost 30 such students took to Tahunanui Beach to help scour through the dunes looking for trash. The previous week they cleaned up the Railway Reserve. “The kids decide where to go to and we plan it all out,” says Victoria. “We are just trying to clean up different parts of Nelson.” Student Astrid Sayer, 12, was one of the first to put her hand up. “One of our school values is ‘kaitiakitanga’ or being guardians of our environment, so I think people just want to get out there and do something helpful and get involved and make a bit of a difference.” She says it was “shocking” how much trash they have found. “Just massive bags of stuff, it’s just horrid. So many cigarette packets and bottles and disgusting stuff. How can people just think that all would disappear?” With help from the Tidy Kiwi Kids, it might have a better chance of that. However, Astrid says it would be a better idea for people to think more about what they are doing with their trash.

Local subcontractors are banding together to ‘get the job done’ at the embattled Greenmeadows Centre. A local subcontractor, who didn’t want to be named, says that he is sticking it out for the greater good of Stoke and the centre. “I’ve got to see it through to the end, it doesn’t help anyone if I pull out now. The project has already had a $1million budget increase from its original price and has had its deadline pushed out several times. It is now not due to open until next year. Nelson City Council has found various building and structural faults in the building that are being fixed. The subcontractor says that there is a new Watts and Hughes site manager now on site who he has “a lot of faith in to get the job done”. The site manager up till recently has been Mike Brophy but is now Darryl Harris. Documents provided to the

Nelson Weekly by Nelson City Council show that a consultant meeting was held on site on June 26 to assess what actions needed to be taken to fix the issues found with the building. In a report, Onus Construction’s Peter Chisolm laid out the plan which included many issues to be rectified. Onus had until recently been the project manager but has now been removed. The documents revealed that

when the plywood was taken off the carpark side of the building to assess moisture damage, it showed that below the flashings an entire row of cavity batons were missing. There were also a number of batons missing at the bottom, and certain parts of the flashing were damaged beyond repair. Due to this, the contractor Watts and Hughes, were not permitted to line or clad any more walls without it being

inspected by the now removed project manager or council building inspector. The document also revealed that a week before the Stoke Rugby Club open day, the bottom shelf of the display cabinet collapsed, leaving the glass door hanging loosely. Watts and Hughes failed to repair this, even though it was asked to do so. Council was forced to get a separate contractor to install screws late on the Friday

to make the cabinet safe for the following day. Other issues discussed were walls not being straight and concrete remedial works on the deck where water had been pooling. It was noted in the on-site meeting that Watts and Hughes had not demonstrated to the building inspector that they had suitable methodology in place to protect the framing and gib lining while the cladding is being replaced and flashing is still being installed. They had agreed to have the methodology in place by June 20 but had still failed to do so by the meeting date. Council’s building consent manager Martin Brown said there was a misconception about how buildings were checked. He said it was not unusual for many buildings to fail inspections like Greenmeadows had – the expectation was that they would all be fixed by the time the consent was to be issued. If they did not, then the building would not get consent. Council is due to issue an update on the project in the coming days.

Every few weeks, Nelson Weekly editor Charles Anderson sits down with someone interesting doing something interesting. This week we speak to Nils Pokel from the Nelson Provincial Museum about the next exhibition which opens on Friday. It promises to be an experiential extravaganza celebrating the work of Tyree Studio and offers an insight into the growth of Nelson. Tell me about the collection It's over 150,000 glass plate photographs. They span close to a century of portrait and landscape photography in the region. A huge chunk of it has been added to the Unesco World Heritage register. It’s quite special as it’s a seamless anthology of the region. Because of some foresight of some clever people they decided to build a stronghold for it – all four tonnes of them. Then it was decided to digitise them to have it as a resource. What sort of images are there? We have tried to pick all the odd ones, the ones that are missed in the vast ocean of photographs. To a large extent it is just dumb luck to try and find these. There will be about 80 images in the show, a lot of those will rarely

light boxes as well as the photos themselves. We are using some really cool ideas and technology to tell this story.

We are taking a bit of a risk and showing ones that might not usually be shown. What have been some of the challenges? The good thing, but sad thing, is there are probably much greater ones in the collection that haven’t been unearthed. The hardest thing is to make a cut – to decide which ones to keep in as there is so much treasure. There will be quirky ones, sad ones, happy ones to give people a real spectrum of the collection.

People will have to come back a couple of times. What can people expect from the exhibition? We are trying to do a few things differently. We didn’t want it just to be black and white photos on a wall. This will be an experience that Nelsonians haven’t seen before. It will challenge perceptions of what a photography show can be. There are lots of experiments in there, its interactive with things to play with and uses everything from props and objects, digital experiments and

Like what sort of things? We have created an app which allows people to take a photo of themselves which then matches it to the closest photo in the collection. You don’t have to type anything and you will find your twin from history. It makes you feel a personal connection with these times in the past. It really uses some amazing technology behind the scenes to deliver it. You will also be able to chat with Mrs Higgins, who is an early settler. It’s built from a lot of material we know about her and Artificial Intelligence, and you can learn all about her life by messaging her on Facebook. What do you hope people will get from the exhibition? My hope is that these people were like us. On a human level they had the same aspiration when they take a photo – to look good, as a keepsake, for memories or to have fun. We think that those times were often stern and stiff like many of the photos, but they just weren’t. They were just as happy, cheeky and funny as we are now.

Fred’s a man of many ‘talents’ He was once Featherston’s number one male model, sheep-shearer, and cheesecake decorator. Yes, ‘Fred From Featherston’ is a man of many talents and the latest creation of award-winning character comic, Alexander Sparrow - the imagined result of a big ego in a small town. “Brought up with 18 brothers and sisters, only four of whom survived being cut off his back, life was tough for Fred,” says Alexander. “He had to work hard to stand out.” In his quest to become Featherston’s number one everything, he’s tried taxidermy,

Mako scrambling to find training fields Charles Anderson The Tasman Mako haven’t had a full-sized pitch to train on in several weeks as Trafalgar Park is off limits for the All Blacks test and there are no other suitable grounds in Nelson. Instead they have been training everywhere from Tahunanui and Stoke, all the way to the Rai Valley. Tasman Rugby’s commercial manager Les Edwards says it’s not an ideal situation. “This is the most professional team in the city but they don’t have a home to train on.” The team has 22 Super Rugby players including six All Blacks. Les says, long term, the team needs a full-sized professional pitch – this could be done on Trafalgar Park’s number two

Photo: Chris Symes/Shuttersport. pitch if it was redeveloped. “If it was astro turfed then rugby, soccer, everyone could use it.” There are some grounds but soccer teams don’t allow the team to use it for their weekly training session as they say it will tear up the pitch. Similar concerns have been raised over the quality of foot-

ball grounds around the city. Tahuna FC’s complained in April that its undersized training pitch on the Tahunanui fields was riddled with valves and man-hole covers while their playing field floods like a bowl. Nelson city councillor and chair of the sport and recreation committee Tim Skinner

says the issue is on “his radar” and he submitted to the council’s Long Term Plan on the issue. He says that a feasibility study is due back in November on the cost and location of a possible all weather pitch that could be used by the Mako and other codes. “We want to look after the Mako but it’s important that other sports can use it as well.” He says that he has paced out the area by the Trafalgar Park number 2 pitch to see if it is large enough but that remains to be seen. Tim says that it’s important to keep such a training pitch close to the CBD. He says that council consulted with a turf specialist about the upcoming All Blacks test and the advice was that no one should train on it before the game.

Havili to captain Tasman Mako Peter Jones David Havili will captain a powerful Tasman Mako squad in the 2018 Mitre 10 Cup competition. The former All Black utility takes over the leadership role from former skipper Alex Ainley, who remains in the 31-man squad which was named today. Wyatt Crockett and Mitch Hunt are vice captains. The Mako squad features several new faces. Along with the vastly-experienced Crockett, who returns to his home town, former North Harbour hooker Ray Niuia, Jed Brown, a hard-nosed Canterbury loosie, and Auckland loan player, flanker Sione Havili, are added to the forward mix. There are also a couple of new faces in the backs – namely Chiefs fullback/wing Solomon Alaimalo and Leicester Faingaanuku, who joins brother Tima. The full 31-man squad and reserve squad can be viewed on the Nelson App. The Mako play their opening match on Friday, August 17, against Canterbury at Lansdowne Park in Blenheim, kick off 7.35pm.

Lizzie on par to be next Lydia Jonty Dine

Lizzie Neale has been embarrassing boys on the golf course since she was seven-years-old. As the only junior female member of the Nelson Golf Club, the young lads all try to out-drive her, but fall well short of her 200 metre monsters. The 15-year-old Nelson College for Girls student has been playing off a staggering one handicap, for the past two months. Lizzie also recently won the Junior Links Best Gross and Net competition which pitted all the best young golfers in the country against each other. During her recorded round, Lizzie shot a 69 gross and 67 net on her home course.

Her winning, bogey free round, also happened to be the best she has ever shot. “I didn’t realise until I got a text, but I was pretty happy.” Lizzie says she dreams of becoming a professional golfer and joining the LPGA. “I just want to keep trying to get good enough grades, so I can maybe get a scholarship to the States and hopefully get on the tour.” Her grandfather, Mike Neale, is a former Nelson Golf Club president and introduced her to the game. “He taught me how to swing a club.” Current Nelson Golf Club president Derek Drysdale says it didn’t take long before she started showing

her true potential. She attended junior skills sessions but soon outgrew the beginner lessons as she excelled in all areas and says she got to the stage where she was a bit bored. “I just wanted to go hit balls on the range.” Derek says because she was so good from an early age she was able to develop under club pros Glyn Delaney and Sean Riordan. Lizzie.” Derek says Lizzie’s dedication to her game is immeasurable. “I was leaving the carpark the other night, it was almost dark but there was Lizzie hitting balls.” He says she brings a ‘feel good factor’ to the Nelson Golf Club. “We are just delighted to have Lizzie in our ranks, she’s very humble and one of the nicest people you’ll meet.” The young golf gun will now switch her focus to the New Zealand Women’s U19 Championships in Palmerston North next month and the New Zealand amateurs in October. She says she just hopes to keep progressing her skill level. “There is no perfect game, you are always learning.”

Sportsmen take up new roles at Nelson Cricket Jonty Dine

Two talented Nelson sportmen have been appointed to key roles at Nelson Cricket. Senior rugby player Ben Eder has been named operations manager while top club cricketer Ryan Edwards has taken up a coaching manager role. Ben will be charged with the delivery of cricket in the Nelson region. “Everything from ensuring the kids in the region have a Saturday morning comp through to the logistics around the Black Caps game.” He says he just wants to see more cricket, more often. “We’ve got a fantastic facility here in Saxton Oval and we want to grow the buzz of Nelson Cricket, make sure it’s available to everyone who wants to play it.” Ryan will look after anything coaching related and provide education. He says the "so called quiet part

one cricket whether it be a mum and dad with two kids who can only afford an hour and a half on a Friday night or a work team wanting to play together on a Tuesday night.” Ryan says Nelson is a city that loves its sport in general. “Every time Nelson has had an opportunity to support cricket they have.” Ryan has been involved with the Nelson cricket scene since he a "wee nipper". He made his representative debut for Nelson at 17, before plying his trade professionally in the UK and returning to the region to play for Stoke/Nayland, finishing his career with 6776 runs and taking 216 wickets. Underwater hockey star to play for NZ Jonty Dine The way Greta Clark plays hockey will take your breath away. Unlike its land-based cousin, underwater hockey takes oxygen out of the equation. “It’s quite a mental game, you have to convince yourself to stay under.” The 16-year-old says, when her lungs are bursting, she remembers the words of her coach, ‘five seconds more even if you feel like you’re dying.’ “It’s all in your head, we can hold our breath for a lot longer than we think we can.” Greta was recently included in the New Zealand U18 underwater hockey team to compete against Australia in the biennial Trans-Tasman competition, in Rotorua from October 8-12. The Nelson College for Girls student says her selection is a dream more than seven years in the making. “Since year one, I wanted to get in the New Zealand team.” Greta is the sole Nelson representative in the team and is also continuing a proud fam-

Her sister, Hannah Clark, is also a former New Zealand rep and made the team at the same age as Greta. “She has helped my game a lot and I look up to her, but we are very competitive, and I want to beat her,” Greta laughed. New Zealand are currently ranked the best underwater hockey team in the world, having won both the elite men’s and women’s world titles in Canada in June. “We are at the top at the moment, it’s a lot to live up to, you don’t want to disappoint

your country.” She says there are a lot of misconceptions about the sport which began as a way for divers to stay fit during the off season. “We use pucks that weigh about 1.5 kg and our sticks are about a ruler length. A lot of people think we run along with big long sticks, but we swim horizontally, flat along the bottom and we don’t have tanks, you have to go up for air.” Greta says lung capacity is a major component of the sport. Greta and her sister took up the game after a coin flip. “I came down from Auckland as a 10-year-old where there was no such thing as water polo and we were looking for a quirky sport.” She says it came down to canoe polo or underwater hockey. “We chose underwater hockey and haven’t looked back, I just have so much love for the sport.” Greta hopes to return to the side next year and is targeting the World Championships, in England next year.
