aim of the rally was to get a few people talking and thinking and to educate people on medicinal cannabis. “From the time we got here we’ve had people come up, ask questions and say, ‘good on you’ and that’s what we want, for people to openly talk about it, to

Reward to catch ‘thieving bastards’ Simon Bloomberg Morley Motorcycle and Marine managing director Ian Robinson is so “bloody angry” after “two dirty thieving little bastards” stole a new $14,500 motorcycle from his Stoke shop early on Monday morning that he has put up a $5000 reward for information leading to their prosecution. The two burglars were seen on Morley’s security cameras removing a window on the shop’s frontage on Elms St in Wakatu Estate at 1.20am and then entering the shop soon after to steal the 2017 CRF450RX bike at 1.49am. Ian says it was clearly a professional job with the two burglars wearing thermally-insulated clothing to evade infra-red detectors and crawling underneath a security beam near the window. Ian says the shop’s alarm was only activated when the bike broke the security beam as it was dragged through the window. The burglars appeared to make their getaway through the end of Elms St, over Orphanage Creek and into the car park near neighbouring Placemakers. “The alarm went off at 1.49am

We had an insurance risk assessor come in before Easter and he said we are doing everything right, but I’ll spend more on security if I have to. “But what I really want to see is these two dirty thieving little bastards caught and locked up. And I don’t want someone telling me it’s a systemic problem and blaming everybody else – I’m bloody angry and I want them held to account.” The reward notice, posted Morley’s Facebook page for information that leads to the prosecution of the thieves, states that “We need these criminals caught as it financially impacts on Nelson-Tasman businesses. Somebody must know the whereabouts of the two criminals or the motorbike. All we want is the thugs to be jailed.”

Richmond retailers try to stay upbeat during upgrade Queen St retailers are experiencing a downturn in business as the street’s upgrade gets into full swing, but many are remaining positive about the project with one business manager saying “these guys will soon move on and we’ll have really nice little main street.” The Tasman District Council’s $11million upgrade started on February 7 and is designed to increase the capacity of stormwater pipes and direct water away from buildings to prevent a repeat of the flooding that devastated Queen St businesses in 2011 and 2013. Ageing water and wastewater pipes and telecommunications and power services are also being replaced and the streetscape modernised to create a more pedestrian-friendly space for the community. Richmond Hospice Shop manager Karen MacKenzie-Howe says their business took a big hit during the installation of the

main water pipe along the length of Queen St which has just been completed. She says the Richmond shop went from being the “flagship” of the five hospice shops in Nelson-Tasman to the poorest performer and she is expecting a similar downturn when the staged construction moves outside their shop later this month. “It’s having a massive impact but we knew it was going to happen and we’ve been proactive about it. We will be running a promotion with the Pelorus Mail Boat in the winter to try an entice shoppers to come and see us, and we’ll be relying on our die-hard customers who would scale fences to shop here.” Karen’s volunteer staff have also installed a Queen St upgradethemed window display, complete with road cones, hard hats and road works signs that sends a loud and clear message that ‘it’s business as usual at your

Richmond Unlimited is encouraging shoppers to support all the retailers during the upgrade, saying in a statement that “the public needs to support all of their regular businesses and retailers”. “If you need to walk an extra 100m to visit a retailer or business then we should all be doing that. Don’t forget them, we all want them to survive so we can

enjoy a better Queen St.” Garry Higgins of the Richmond Roast House says his business is also taking a hit, but he’s “refusing to be negative about it or point the finger” because the upgrade “can’t be put off any longer and the contractors are doing the best they can”. “Sure it’s tough, but we are a lot better off than places like Kaikoura and Christchurch and we know that these guys will soon move on and we’ll have really nice little main street,” Garry says. “We also knew it was coming and had time to plan for it - I worked out how much it was going to affect me and I was pretty much right on the mark.”’ Garry says he’s also grateful for the support of his loyal customers who still “make the long walk to come here”. However, the bad news for retailers is that the completion of the first stage of the project has been delayed by two weeks. Hawkin Infrastructure’s community relations manager Chris Forman says they have encountered so many pipes that weren’t mapped on the plans that it is taking longer than expected to progress to stage two. Stage one will now be completed by late May with stage two from McIndoe Pl to Cambridge St starting in late April or early May.

This morning at 5:45am, Durham Quigley led the Anzac Day Dawn Parade – an honour he has had for the last four years. Durham has been a serving soldier for 31 years, with the last 10 spent as a reserve soldier in Nelson, while also managing the Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village for the last six years. He has served in Bosnia and East Timor, and says that giving the commands to start marching from Millers Acre to Anzac Park on April 25th each year is a “really big honour”. Durham joined the army at age 18 after growing up in Greymouth and then Havelock, with his parents buying the Pelorus Tavern. After finishing school, he undertook an apprenticeship as a mechanic. “But I decided I didn’t like working on vehicles all that much and I’d always had a wish to join the army more than anything, so I joined as an infantry soldier,” he says. After completing training,

He came back to New Zealand in 1989, a time when there weren’t many overseas deployments. “The late 80s and early 90s was a very quiet period for the army, but then things started to heat up, and we had groups heading to places like Cambodia and Somalia.” And then there was the request for New Zealanders to work alongside the British in Bosnia and Durham was

one of the soldiers who were selected to go over there for a six month tour in 1994. “That was pretty much my first operation tour. It was a really busy tour, a very volatile place, a very complex military situation, and security for us had to be really tight - we always had to be on our guard,” he says. Not long after, he went over to East Timor on the front line. “That’s when things heated up for our company, and we lost one of our

soldiers in a combat operation - and it really went from a peacekeeping to peacemaking-type operation.” Durham went to Timor when his youngest son was just six weeks old. “Having to leave my lovely wife and family behind was always difficult. You get the photos and the mail, but it’s always a tough time knowing your wife was at home having to fend for herself.” After 21 years in the army, Durham decided it was time to pursue a “civilian career”, while still saying on in the military reserves. Ten years on, he says Anzac Day is important to him. “To me, it’s honouring those who have sacrificed, not only their lives, but those who have served, those who have been injured - physically and mentally. We should be proud of our service and what we do for the country.” Durham’s 15 year old son was also involved with this morning’s service, as a cenotaph guard, while his other 26 year old son is in the Navy. “It is definitely a family affair,” he says.

Optometrist certificate found 80 years on Kate Russell Reporter

A rare find at Nelson's longest-established optometry practice has brought up some memories - way back from 1938. Missy Hearfield, who is an optical dispenser at Esposito EyeSite on Hardy St, was updating her and owner Neil Esposito’s practicing certificates earlier this month, when she came across the hidden certificate of the previous owner of the practice – Robert Barnes. Dated 1938 and in ‘pristine’ condition, it was sandwiched between two pieces of cardboard in the frame. “Neil normally changes it over, but he just didn’t see it there all these years,” says Missy. Robert Barnes, who was known to many as Bob Barnes, came to Nelson from Wellington and set up practice at the same location, at 210 Hardy St.

Photo: Kate Russell. He ran the practice, which was known back then as Barry and Sargent Opticians, until 1982, which was when Neil took over, due to Bob becoming unwell and pass-

ing away in 1983. Neil has now been there for 35 years, keeping the 80 year old independent history of the practice alive. Neil doesn’t have too many

memories of Bob, but says “he was a good, hardworking man who liked a few drinks.” He says Bob used to regularly make trips over to Takaka to see patients who didn’t have access to an optometrist. “Bob would make the three hour trip over the hill, and stay the night in the pub over there,” says Neil. It is a tradition that Neil has kept up to this day - he even uses some of the same equipment Bob used - except he sees his patients at the Golden Bay Motel, not the pub. Missy says she sent Bob’s practicing certificate away to the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Board of New Zealand to see if they had any information about him. “Unfortunately, they had nothing else on him,” says Missy. “But the lady at the board said ‘wow, what a cool find’.” Missy says they would love to find out more about Bob, and welcomes people to share their stories about him.

New track gets thumbs up from users Brittany Spencer Reporter

With dirt spraying across the track and grinning faces, riders of all ages and stages signalled their approval at the opening of the newest Nelson Mountain Bike Club trail. The grade three Crazy Horse Trail runs 872m from Jacks Hub down to the Dun Mountain Trail in the Codgers Mountain Bike Park. With zig zags, berms and rollers, the new trail is ideal for families and beginners, but also gives the more advanced something to play on. Ten-year-old Kael Matthew was one of the first riders to try out the new track and says he absolutely loves it. “It’s great, you can go very fast on it and the corners are very well

constructed, the whole thing is really fun.” Kael’s dad Alistair Matthews has been mountainbiking for the last 26 years and moved his family to Nelson for the mountainbiking scene last year. “Nelson ticked the box with the biking, how good the scene is here, and how great the riding schools are, so it is perfect for us.” Alistair says the new track is awesome. “It’s a real ripping fun time for all levels and it’s great to see so many people riding it.” Easy Trail Services director Ian Phillipps says a lot of planning went into the track so it was great to see it completed and being ridden by so many enthusiastic riders. “There were some logistical challenges, having the main water supply for the town under the

Photo: Brittany Spencer. firebreak, but we’ve made the best use of the land that we can, and this is exactly what Nelson needs, just a nice track people can progress on.” The NMTBC paid $12,000 towards the build and were sup-

ported by the Nelson City Council who contributed finances and land. On the day, councillor Mike Rutledge wasn’t content to just sit back and watch, jumping on his bike for three laps of the new

track. “It’s nice and mellow but there are fun sections on it too and I am sure no matter how advanced you are, you can have a lot of fun on this.” Mike says the growth of mountainbiking within the region is such a positive thing to see. “Council has put a significant amount of resources into mountainbiking in terms of bringing people into Nelson from a tourism point of view, but also for positive outdoor recreation for residents.” Crazy Horse is the first step in the Codgers Mountain Bike Park redevelopment and making the region’s mountain biking more family-friendly. The trail is open 24/7 to the whole community and is accessible through the Dun Mountain Trail on Brook St.

Cars go on show for Hospice Jessie Johnston Car lovers will get the best of both worlds this Sunday when Nelson Tasman Hospice hosts its first annual Vehicle Display. As well as supporting the organisation in its fundraising event, the display will have a range of vehicles of interest including army trucks, classic cars, motorbikes and hot rods. “There used to be a Hospice run from the Richmond race course into town, but it got that many vehicles attending that it became a bit of a traffic hazard, which would have required a lot of policing to continue,” says organiser Dave Verry. “So a static display just follows on from that.” Anyone with a “special interest automobile” is encouraged to bring it along on the day, with entry just $5 per vehicle. The show will also have plenty of food and drink available for purchase. “[It’s a great way to] support Hospice. 80-90 per cent of people have had some dealings with Hospice so now’s your chance to support them after they’ve supported you, or may support you in the future,” says Dave. With fingers crossed for a good turnout of vehicles, Dave says they are prepared for lower numbers being the first event, although future displays will be held in January to make the most of Nelson’s holiday makers. The Nelson Tasman Hospice Vehicle Display will be held on Sunday, April 30, at Founders Heritage Park. Those who wish to display their vehicles are asked to gather at the park from 8:30am, entering off North Road. The show will start at 10am with entry just $5 for adults and $10 for a family. For further information on the display, contact Dave on 027 447 1300. Bad weather this Sunday will see the display postponed until Sunday, May 7.

News SENIORNET MEMBER NUMBERS SKYROCKET: SeniorNet members Mavis Marsland and E’beth McKendry were flat out signing up new members on the groups open day on Saturday. Seventy-eight new members joined SeniorNet on Saturday, which teaches the region’s more senior residents to use and engage with technology. SeniorNet’s Hilary Carpenter says 300-350 people strolled through the doors, eager to find out more about the group. “People were saying they’d always wanted to do something like this and jumped at the opportunity when they saw the Nelson Weekly article [last week]. I am writing in response to your article asking for support for toilets at the Hockey Place playground. As a resident who lives on Hockey Place, I am totally against having such a facility, for good reasons. We have had several different freedom campers park in the car park adjacent to the playground, but up to now they have only stayed one night as there are no facilities. This would change if toilet facilities were provided. None of us who live here want to have campers parked outside our bedrooms at night. No-one would. It would encourage other night

The National Party and their two friends in the Maori Party passed the Resource Legislation Amendment Bill earlier this month without realising that they fuelled a campaign to end years of separatism. That campaign, led by former National Party leader Don Brash and Auckland business manager Casey Costello, comes to the Rutherford Hotel in Nelson on Tuesday, May 2. Wide-ranging amendments to the Resource Management Act through the RLA Bill were intended to reduce red tape and hasten development. But last-minute changes, demanded by the Maori Party, that brought the insertion of iwi participation clauses, bring a new level of “brown tape” that will slow down resource consents, the opposite of what the bill intended. Environment Minister Nick Smith, who is the MP for Nelson, has claimed that the iwi clauses will have little impact and would tidy up what is already happening. But Don Brash said “Don’t take National’s word on what these iwi clauses mean. Don’t even take ours.

Instead, read this series of Maori Party Facebook clippings.” These posts say “Negotiations aren’t always about we can get. Sometimes it’s about what we can stop.” In other words, start saving for the ransom demands. The tribal elite has just won the power to hold up New Zealand one council at a time. The Hobson’s Pledge group burst into existence last September, sparking a landslide of hostile media coverage.

Since then, Don Brash and Casey Costello drew to attention the ridiculous declaration that the Whanganui River was to become a “person.” They criticised the Waitangi Tribunal’s attempt to shift the blame for re-offending by Maori by alleging that the Crown breached the Treaty of Waitangi by not doing enough to stop it. Hobson’s Pledge says that both the separate Maori seats in Parliament and the Waitangi Tribunal should go, that tribal appointees in local government subvert democracy, and that vague Treaty clauses in legislation generate confusion everywhere. Iwi claims for water ownership should not proceed because everyone has an interest in water. A tax exemption for tribal businesses should not continue. The balance of power in Parliament may be changed on September 23 this year, through the election – and National knows it. Casey Costello said “Our message is very clear. Race based legislation serves no useful purpose for any of us.” Business Update. Adv.

After 22 days on the water, Dave Puklowski has completed his “Challenge for a Mate”, returning home on Sunday afternoon to a welcome party of friends and family. Dave’s challenge was to solo circumnavigate the South Island in a 3.8-metre rigid hull inflatable boat, becoming the smallest powered craft to do so. His 22-day adventure was all in aid of his mate Russell Blowers, who suffers from a rare and painful form of rickets, the challenge raising funds to pay for Russell’s latest surgeries. “Being the smallest powered craft to solo navigate, that sort of represents a few worries like, is the motor going to last? Especially when you’re out right down Fiordland and Foveaux Strait and things like that, it's constantly on your mind, especially when the weather gets really bad,” says Dave. “I had more bad weather than good but, all in all, nothing to complain about, I guess, I knew it was going to be a challenge, that’s what it’s all about.”

I think Dave probably hit on a really big thing that’s really important for him, and for me as well, that [the foundation] has been set up to help other people in the future and everyone who’s been involved in Challenge for a Mate so far has been behind that concept as well. So if there’s anybody out there who wants to use this and use our knowledge, just get on the website, get in touch with us and we’re more than willing to help.” In total Dave used about 2000 litres of fuel, spent over 100 hours travelling and covered 2800km. Straight off the back of their Wholesale Wish promotion earlier this year, which saw 60 landscaping wishes granted, Wholesale Landscapes is teaming up with Azwood Energy for another giveaway. The two companies be donating four pallets of boxed, kiln-dried firewood blocks to four worthy causes. Each pallet contains 60 boxes of Azwood dry fire wood blocks which would normally retail for

around $10 per box. “We sell kiln-dried wood blocks from $14 a load, all year round. They’re one of our most popular products, people literally line up to get them when it starts to get cold because they burn with quite a high heat,” says Wholesale Landscapes’ Tom Filmer. “We had these pallets sitting out the back and we thought, we could sell them, or we could give them away and community organisations could have a chance to do some fundraising coming into winter, and hopefully make

Kellys Bush open day After the success of its previous open days, the “magical” Kellys Bush at will be opening its gates again this weekend. Tucked away behind Nelson city at Enner Glynn, the 5.7 hectares of bush will be open to the public this Sunday. It encompasses a rare 2.5 hectare piece of original lowland forest which has been described by Nelson City Council as an ‘area of special significance’ and ‘locally uncommon’, due to its proximity to Nelson City and its richness in Tawa and Maitai. It is home to trees from pre-European times, native birds, rare and endangered species of fungi, giant native earthworms and the giant carnivorous snail, powelliphanta. The open day is on this Sunday, 30 April, from 1-4pm, rain or shine. The address is 100 Enner Glynn Rd and there will be signs up. No dogs, and please park on the roadside.
