More homeowners, less smokers in Tasman ANNE HARDIE Tasman has made big steps in home ownership, has the highest percentage of people working from home and has the lowest

proportion of regular smokers, according to new data. Statistics New Zealand has just released more information gathered from the 2023 Census which shows 77.4 per cent of house-

holds in Tasman now own their own home. That was up 12.3 per cent, or 2,439 dwellings, since 2018 which was the largest percentage growth in the country. Around two-thirds of households

in the country, or 66 per cent, now own their home or hold it in a family trust, compared with 64.5 per cent in 2018. The areas with the highest home ownership rates were districts close to

Christchurch such as Waimakariri and Selwyn, plus places close to Wellington including Carterton. Statistics New Zealand identified
