Economy on the up The Nelson economy is on the up, says a senior economist, and the outlook is even brighter. According to Infometrics’ quarterly economic monitor, economic activity in Nelson is growing at a healthy clip and, with improving returns in the broader region’s primary sector and increasing air connections set to stimulate business and visitor activity, this period of robust economic

growth looks set to continue. Infometrics senior economist, Benje Patterson, says Nelson’s economy grew by 3.1 per cent over the year to June 2015, which was the fifth fastest of New Zealand’s sixteen regions. “Economic growth in neighbouring Tasman is also healthy, with Tasman’s GDP having expanded by 3.2 per cent over the June year.”

Growth in economic activity is broadbased across most indicators of spending and investment, with firms also becoming increasingly confident to take on new staff. Nelson’s unemployment rate has eased to close to 4.5 per cent, compared with a peak of 5.2 per cent in December 2012. “Further evidence of these improving job prospects can be seen in the reduction of people claiming jobseeker benefits, as well

as the soaring level of inbound net migration into Nelson,” says Benje. Infometrics’ report shows that Nelson house prices climbed 3.2 per cent over the year to June. Patterson says that although building consents in Nelson remain soft, rising consent numbers in Tasman are keeping local

Miracle baby fighting again Kate Russell Nelson’s very own ‘miracle baby’ has just celebrated his first birthday, but is now back in hospital fighting for his life. Jack Frost’s story featured in the Nelson Weekly last December, after his mum, Vicki Frost, went into labour at just 23 weeks, well short of the usual 40 weeks. Her waters broke at 21 weeks and she was told by doctors that her baby would be too young to save. But a call was made to Wellington hospital who took them in, and Vicki was given drugs to suppress the labour. Two days later, on August 26, she gave birth to Jack, weighing just 712 grams. This year, Vicki, her husband Marty and Jack have been enjoying life as a family of three back in Nelson, but after a rough weekend with Jack struggling to breathe, he was flown to Auckland’s Starship Hospital on Sunday for specialist treatment.

He is now in the paediatric intensive care unit and underwent surgery yesterday to look for a possible blockage in his throat. The outcome of his surgery is not yet known but Vicki stated they were all crossing their fingers that the problem could be resolved immediately. It is a heavy blow for the family, as Jack has been thriving and meeting all his milestones for his corrected age, which is eight months. He is eager to explore, smiles a lot and has a healthy appetite – especially for avocado, banana and his grandfather’s flounder.

Vicki says that although Jack still needs regular check-ups with his paediatrician, visits to an ear, nose and throat specialist, developmental check-ups, plus hearing and eye tests - he has done really well with all of them. Vicki says she has been blown away with the amount of interest in Jack. They’ve been sent first birthday cards from strangers and also received numerous gifts and cards when Jack was born. “I sent out 120 ‘thank you’ cards to people who sent us things or helped us,” she says. New home, but no internet until March

A Richmond couple moved into their brand new home last week, only to be told it will be nine months before they’ll have a phone line or internet – and there’s nothing they can do about it. Simon and Lara Gordon built the first house of a new nine-home subdivision near Champion Rd and moved in last week. They were told during the building phase that all new subdivisions have to be installed with fibre cable, not copper. So they installed the fibre and were only told after they moved in that there are no fibre cables on their road and that they’ll have to wait until March to be connected. Lara says it’s “crazy” that in 2015, and while living in a brand new home in the middle of a town like Richmond, they’ve been told they have to wait nine months for a phone line or internet. “Everything revolves around the world wide web these days. We do our banking online, bills get sent to us via email and the kids study is put online. The internet is an essential service in this modern world, it’s like saying you have to put a special water cable in but it isn’t con-

They say a quote to have copper installed was over $3000. “The thing that annoys us is that they’re putting fibre into streets that already have copper, so already have the internet and a phone,” says Lara. “The majority of them aren’t going to connect to it and you have all these new

subdivisions that have been told they have to have fibre, but they’re not doing those streets.” Editor’s note: Late yesterday, in fact right on our deadline, Nelson Weekly got a response from Chorus on this issue: “The March 2016 date indicated is for the wider area, not for this subdivision. The work to connect the subdivision to fibre is currently underway and is due to be finished in about three weeks. We will work with our local guys in the area to determine the best potential solution for the customer, depending on the circumstances. This may include speeding up the fibre work, if possible.”

Trampers rescued: Rescuers have been successful in recovering two trampers who got into difficulty in the Nelson Lakes National Park Saturday afternoon. Conditions in the area prevented a helicopter getting to the pair yesterday but they were picked up about 1pm Sunday during a break in the weather. The Irish woman and Latvian man, both in their mid-twenties, were checked by an advanced paramedic on the mountain and did not require further medical treatment. Search coordinator Senior Constable Dave Colville says the first rescue team to reach the pair early Sunday morning had done an outstanding job to bring them back from a severely hypothermic state prior to the helicopter’s arrival. The rescue team had tramped through the night in snow and high winds to reach the pair about 5.30am. There was a wind chill of -18deg and heavy blowing snow.

Store ram-raided: A Nelson store had its front doors smashed by a car before thousands of dollars worth of mag wheel rims stolen. Mag and Turbo’s alarm was activated at around 6am this morning, and when security staff arrived it was discovered that the front windows had been smashed and stock stolen. It is believed a vehicle was used to smash the windows on the Vanguard St business.

Big grant for velodrome: The Saxton Velodrome and Cycle Safety Arena has received a significant funding boost with The Canterbury Community Trust confirming a $100,000 grant. Work has already started on the $1.6million project, situated at Saxton Stadium, which will see the 333m velodrome facility completed within the next 16 to 20 months. The project is being funded by Nelson City and Tasman District councils, which are contributing 80 per cent of the total. The Saxton Velodrome Trust is charged with raising the remainder, (approximately $320,000).

No liquor store for Victory Campaigners against the controversial Victory Liquor Centre are calling its owners’ decision to withdraw their licence renewal application “a fantastic result for the community”. Keep Victory Safe community developer Gayle Petch and Nelson City Councillor Matt Lawrey say the opening of the store in 2013 brought with it a significant rise in alcohol-related problems, including antisocial and intimidating behaviour, broken bottles and RTD cans in the park and playground, vandalism and other petty crime. Matt says the dramatic decrease in all of these problems since the shop closed in January proves that Victory was always the wrong place for a liquor store. Gayle says she’s thrilled the store is gone for good. “A store selling cheap liquor, with easy access to a park and close to preschools and schools, was never something Victory wanted or needed, and I know many in the community will be breathing a sigh of relief. I certainly am!” Both Gayle and Matt thanked lawyer Nigel McFadden who worked pro bono to help fight the licence renewal application. There were 26 objections to the Victory Liquor Centre’s on-licence and off-licence renewal application from various groups and individuals, including community groups, police and the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board.

Fun runners go blue on Father’s Day

The car came from the Countdown supermarket car park, through the fence and was left with the front of the car hanging over the edge of the car park and into a driveway at Whareama. They came with face paint, they came dressed up and even their dogs came wearing some blue. The fun runners and walkers really got into the Blue September spirit on Sunday. It’s the second year in a row MS Ford has hosted the Blue September Father’s Day 5km fun run or walk. The event raises money for Blue September, which aims to raise awareness

about prostate cancer. The event is held on Father’s Day to further tie-in with the theme, and MS Ford marketing manager Amanda Sears says the event raised more than $2000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. “I was really impressed with the day and I was really, really impressed with how everyone got dressed up and wore blue.”

There were 85 people registered for the fun run or walk, with the course organised by Peter Gibbs and volunteers from the Nelson Prostate Cancer Support Group helping direct runners and walkers. Amanda says people wanting to donate to the Blue September cause can visit the MS Ford showroom, where a donation box will be for the month.

Work to begin on Trafalgar Centre this week

Work on upgrading the Trafalgar Centre will get underway this week, nearly two years after the building was closed. Local firm Gibbons Construction have been appointed to do the physical works, and are already beginning to establish themselves onsite. The long-awaited project was given the green light at a council meeting last month, and the start of the work comes as a relief for many. The iconic building has been closed since December 2013 after it was

Christmas card arrives eight months late

Lawrie and Janet Hardaker enjoy receiving a Christmas card as much as the next person. But the latest card they received in the post has given them more laughs than most. That’s because after the card was sent last December, it finally arrived in the letterbox last week. Lawrie says their first reaction was to laugh. “Janet then got on the phone to her sister-in-law [who sent the card] and asked if they’d just sent a card to us, and she said 'no,' they sent one last December.” The story of the missing card has

been a topic of hot conversation amongst their friends and neighbours, and Lawrie says he did call NZ Post to ask what may have happened to the card. “All they could do was chuckle and laugh. They had no idea.” The card was sent by Robert and Elizabeth Nelson from New Plymouth, but Lawrie says it was not processed by NZ Post until August, so was probably stuck down the side of a mailbox for the past eight months. “It’s caused a lot of laughs and Elizabeth said that she won’t bother sending a card this year as we’ve already got one.”

School fair season begins The Appleby School Country Fair has always been a crowd pleaser and a magnet for sunshine, fun and community spirit. The school’s major fundraiser has been a popular event since the 90s and every year it has grown in size, offering the public an array of food, entertainment, fair ground activities, bargains and competitions. “It was fantastic, we had a huge turn out, everybody pitched in and we had a great day,” says fair manager, Laura Southward. “As usual, we worked on parking to make it as smooth as

possible for people coming to the fair and we always try and bring something new in, this year it was laser tag and that went really well, particularly for the older kids.” Laura says the fair gets great support. “We had amazing support yet again from the local community, its one of the really lovely things about where we are, not only is it the school parents that pitch in but we get people from around the community.” The total raised hasn’t been counted yet, but last year’s event raised more than $40,000.

Local businesses up for national awards

Three Nelson businesses have been named as finalists in the 2015 Hospitality New Zealand Awards for Excellence. The Playhouse Theatre is a finalist in the Best Entertainment/Music Venue section, The Jellyfish Cafe and Bar is a finalist in the Best Cafe, while the Hampden Hotel in Murchison is a finalist in the Best Country Hotel section. The broad spectrum of award finalists is spread paint | wallpaper | curtains | blinds across 15 separate categories, with a total of 50 entries making it through to the final judging stage. Hospitality New Zealand chief executive Bruce Robertson says the quality of entries into the awards was of an extremely high standard, and those selected as finalists represented the very best in their specific fields. “The awards have been designed to encapsulate all aspects of the hospitality industry – including the ‘back office’ disciplines of a business from an operational perspective, through to the ‘front of house’ attributes,” he says. Entrants into the Hospitality New Zealand Awards for Excellence are judged over a seven week period by a panel of independent industry professionals, who assess every competitor on a range of commercial and operational per metre criteria. These include staff training and human resources, customer service, food and beverages, marketing and promotional activities, and the demonstration of business growth. Winners of the Hospitality New Zealand Awards for Excellence will be announced at the organisation’s national conference being held in Nelson on October 8.

Victory has had a liquor store for well over 20 years and it ticked along nicely. Those with issues are going to have them no matter if there is a liquor store there or not. They come in all shapes and sizes and various states of tidiness, and now is the perfect chance to get an up close and personal look into some of the region’s classic kiwi sheds. Graeme Wilson will be amongst those supporting the Life Education Trust by sharing his creations and the shed that houses his passion for woodwork. Joinery has been his life-long career and he certainly had a hard time giving it up for retirement. “I retired three times, first time I lasted until lunch on the first day and then I went out and got a job. I went to Viking Furniture and the guy that was running it said ‘boy am I pleased to see someone who can work, I’ve just got the contract to do all the fittings in the Suburban Club and you’re it, so go get your tools and come back after lunch,’ so I did. “When we finished all those contracts he became ill and had to give the business away, and I thought it was a good time to retire again, so I did. By the middle of the first day I was hacked off so I went down to Orange Joinery and they had just got the contract for fitting out the apart-

So I worked there for a while until their manager left and then I looked after the business until they found another one, which took them a couple of years because they weren’t actually looking.” When Graeme did retire for the third and final time, woodworking was the obvious choice to keep him busy. “I was used to working, I liked working and I can’t bear sitting still, so I had to find something to do.” A long time love of the outdoors inspired Graeme to build two kayaks, specifically constructed for both him and his wife. His other projects have included grandfather clocks, a roller top desk, nesting tables, his TV cabi-

NMIT commerce degree now fully accredited Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology’s Applied Business area has become one of the first in the country to be fully accredited for its Bachelor of Commerce degree by the Chartered Accountants of Australia and New Zealand. Today Nelson Weekly turns 5 years old. It's been a heck of a journey for those involved. Editor and director Andrew Board tells his story of how the paper started. Steve Page will tell you that it started with three clients in one day asking him to start a newspaper in Nelson, all because they wanted better value for their advertising dollar. For me, it started with a phone call. Back in the winter of 2010, Steve and his wife Jenny Bates had already owned

the Waimea Weekly newspaper for five years, that paper covered all of Richmond and down as far south as Murchison. I’d worked for the Waimea Weekly previously, but when the phone call came I was a journalist at another newspaper. My then-girlfriend Sarah was in advertising at the same paper. The call was from Steve and it went like this: “Stuff it, I’m going to start a paper in Nelson. You want to jump on board?” After the phone call, I

Forget 2011, the party starts this weekend and thousands will be there to kick it off kiwi-style. This Saturday Nelson is attempting break a Guinness World Record by hosting the world’s largest haka at Tahunanui Beach. The haka is to celebrate one year until the world comes to Nelson for the Rugby World Cup. Three thousand people are needed to perform the famous Ka mate haka, often performed by the All Blacks, and they are encouraged to wear whatever feels right. “If you are Scottish, wear you whanau tartan, if you are part of a sporting group, wear your uniforms,

this is a celebration of the great melting pot in Aotearoa,’’ says orgainser Mike Elkington. Around 100 people, men and women, turned up to a haka practice at Neale Park last Sunday and Mike says he has taught the haka to hundreds of other people from around the region over the past couple of months. The mass haka is being held this Saturday, 11 September with organisers asking people to arrive by 1pm for the world record attempt at 3pm. Everyone is invited to attend and be a part of history, rain, hail or shine.

Spring 'hoedown' to be held on new dance floor Kate Russell A new extended dance floor at Deville will be christened this weekend, with a 'spring hoedown' dance party. The event is to celebrate the arrival of spring and to get people out and about again after a long winter. It will feature two local acts - DJ Grant Smithies and The Immigrants, as well as The Dark Country, who hail from Motueka and Westport. The owner of the popular Nelson cafe, Geoff McLean, has been working on the construction of the dance floor over the past couple of weekends, and it will be ready for the event this Saturday night. The dance floor will also double up as a deck. “The area didn't flow very well, so we thought – lets extend it,” says Geoff. “It will be a great dance floor, and secondly, it will be so much better for tables and chairs in the summer.” The project has been a real 'team effort,' with staff, family and friends pitching in over a couple of working bees. Geoff says they are planning on hosting lots of live music in the coming summer months.

On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as J. Blizzard (father), Picton, New Zealand. Blizzard worked as a draper before enlisting for service with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. He embarked with the 10th Reinforcements Canterbury Infantry Battalion, C Company on 4 March 1916 from Wellington, New Zealand for Suez, Egypt. He served for four years and sixty-six days in Egypt and Western Europe. Blizzard was discharged as no longer physically fit for war service due to wounds received in action on 16 December 1919. Blizzard died on 26 February 1955.

Nelson brothers Huw and Rhys John may be relatively new to the area, but they had no problems finding their way around on Sunday when they raced through Richmond and Stoke on their way to winning the Wily Weka Challenge. The brothers formed one of the 86 teams entered in the Nelson Orienteering Club's event that involved finding controls marked on a map of Richmond, Stoke and Monaco. The controls were allocated points depending on their difficulty and Huw and Rhys amassed an impressive 3060 points in six hours. "We went into the Richmond foothills first and then out to Stoke and up into the hills around Panorama Drive," Huw says. "The hills were the easiest part, which sounds strange, but we found it so hard pounding the pavements - it was hard on the legs." Huw says they were using the race as the official starting point for their training for the Godzone Adventure race in the Nelson-Tasman region next April. "It was the first hit out for the season," Rhys says. "We did Godzone in different teams last year, but we are in the same team this time so it was a good chance to race together and see how we went."

Dave Quested and Kim Hawkes won the mixed team's six-hour section with 2860 points, Marjolein Edwards, Pam Morris and Jacqui MacIntyre won the women's section with 2310 points, Wayne Hennessy and Roderick Morrison won the family section and Garin College's Trudi Kent, Molly Inman, Anya Schultz and Kate McCashin won the junior section with 1230 points. Duncan Darroch, Dexter Buchanan and Nicky Baxter were the best of the three-hour teams, winning the mixed section with 1730 points. Irene Firestone, Anna Gibbons and Mel Shirley won the women's section with 1420 points, Chris and Samuel Charles and Bryn Thurlow won the family section with 1280 points, while Nigel Kelly, Malcolm Edridge and Brad Wallace won the men's section with 1400 points. Course planner Gordon Sloane says the competitors enjoyed the race which is likely to be held in St Arnaud next year. Although the majority of controls were in urban areas, Gordon says teams had a chance to get high into the Richmond Hills to find some of the higher scoring controls. "Most people I spoke to enjoyed the course," Gordon says. "I think the hill challenge at both ends of the course stitched it together quite well."

It’s official: Nelson College has the best secondary school football team in the country. Nelson beat defending champions Sacred Heart College 2-1 at Saxton Field on Friday to claim the title. Goals from Max Winterton and Matt Tod-Smith gave Nelson a handy lead before the visitors scored with ten minutes remaining. It is the first time Nelson has won the Lotto New Zealand Secondary School Football tournament and coach Davor Tavich was thrilled after the game. “It was a good win.

We played well and our boys played really hard.” He credited the defence for giving his team good go-forward ball, but said he couldn’t single out a man of the match. “They were all good, all played with heart. I’m very happy.” Earlier in the week Nelson looked strong from the start, winning comfortably through the group stage. Nelson played Saint Kentigern College in the quarter finals of the tournament and, after playing extra time with no score, the game went to penalties. It was then that Nelson goal keeper Alan Brook earned his place in

the school's football folklore, saving three penalties to ensure his team made the semi finals. There the school faced football powerhouse Mount Albert Grammar from Auckland. Nelson scored two second half goals thanks to Kevin Obed and Matt TodSmith to reach the final against the Danny Hay-coached Sacred Heart College. Tournament director and general manager of Nelson Bays Football, Clive Beaumont, says the tournament was a huge success. “Overall I'm pretty satisfied with the week, we had some very trying conditions. There was a challenge to get the games played be-

cause the pitches were getting dangerous to the players." On Nelson's win, Clive says it was simply "remarkable". "I don't think the achievement of Nelson College can be overstated for a small regional school. Against the might of those schools from Auckland, it's just remarkable. It's the only word for it. I was trying to find out during the week, when was the last time a South Island school team won this tournament, I couldn't." Clive says the "unsung heroes" of last week were the groundkeepers from Nelmac for getting those pitches up to standard.

Jacks OPD through to premier final Jacks OPD are through to the premier club netball final at Saxton Stadium this Saturday, but it will have to wait until Thursday's minor semi-final to see whether it will be Prices or Richmond it will face. Semi-finals were played for all grades at Saxton Stadium on Saturday, and there were a number of intense battles for a berth in next week’s finals. All grades, excluding Premier, have a 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 format with the winners progressing to the final. The elite grade has a minor and major semi-final with 1 v 2, with the winner advancing to the final while the loser plays the winner of the 3 v 4 in the major semi on Thursday night. Tennis season launched in Tahuna The start of spring means the end of winter tennis and for the Tahuna Tennis Club, a chance to welcome new members. The club celebrated its annual open day on Saturday and club captain Mike Delaney says the club is again looking strong heading into the interclub season. “We are a really diverse club ability-wise. We have some of the best players in the region here and we also have some very social players, which gives the club a good feel and we’re certainly keen

for more players to come and join us.” The open day gave those from outside the club the chance to come down and give tennis a go and Mike says they’re hoping to sign up a few new members before the start of the season. “People who just want to play social tennis are more than welcome, as are those who want to play interclub. We always do well in inter-club competitions, we have teams in every grade and room for new players.” For the third year in a row the

club is sponsored by the Speight’s Ale House. Mike says the club is also hosting a Have a Go day for kids this Saturday. The day is free and for kids of all abilities. Club coach Suzanne Spencer says all gear is provided and it’s a great opportunity to gets kids, aged up to 12, the chance to have a go at tennis. The Have a Go day starts from 9.30am. Mike says people can just come down every Saturday afternoon and join in their club day.
