The public and stall-holders want the council to make the Nelson Market traffic-free after a child was hit by a car there on Saturday morning.
Nelson Weekly understands that the pre-school-aged girl was crossing the raised brick traffic calmer near the walkway through to Trafalgar St, when she was struck by a car. It is believed she was left unscathed, as ambulance and police were not called to the scene and
there is no record of her being taken to hospital. However, regular market-goer Mercia Duncan witnessed the incident and says while the car was not moving fast, the impact was enough to fling the child to the right and onto the road. She believes that a traffic-ban
during market hours is “longoverdue”. “Nelson’s Saturday market is a great drawcard to our CBD but following on from stall-holders setting up early in the morning, there should be no access to motorised vehicles until after 1pm,” she says.
“Yes, it is a car park, but it is a market for people. There are many families there with children. There are elderly folk and visitors not used to cars driving in a market place. “It’s not like crossing Trafalgar St,

People are far more important than cars.” It is also understood some of the stall-holders at the market have started a petition for the council to ban traffic. comes first at the market and there are signs at the end of each aisle saying, ‘watch for cars,’ as well as orange road cones,” she explains. “We do the best we can. You do
need to be really careful, especially with young children.” Nita says she has already contacted council expressing her concerns after Saturday’s incident and will be looking at putting up more signage, too. She says that incidents with traffic are very unusual but previously a market-goer’s foot had been run over by a passing vehicle. However, this was over a history of 40 years. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says council will be exploring options to make the square safer during market hours. “This is extremely concerning, and I have asked staff to look into it and follow up with the the police. “This would have been a traumatic event for everyone involved and we hope that the little girl is okay.”

Nelson’s CBD is all hospitality Charles Anderson Nelson may have called itself a city for a long time, but it is now on the cusp of actually becoming one, says one new CBD bar owner. Logan Ursell and his partner Lisa Penketh have recently returned to Nelson after spending 16 years in the hospitality scene in Melbourne and London. Eight weeks ago, they opened Arden on Hardy St, where two former retail stores had stood. “I think Nelson has called itself a city a very long time and it’s teetering on actually becoming one,” says Logan. When they left he says it was near impossible to find people of a certain generation. “But that is changing.” He says they wanted to create an establishment which would not be out of place in Melbourne or London. “There are good hospitality venues already here but there is room to move the market forward.” The transition of the Hardy St store could be considered a microcosm of what is happening in Nelson as it goes through an identity crisis about the CBD’s future. Many retail stores are struggling, however hospitality venues continue to pop up. According to Nelson City Council data, locals spent

However, the spend on apparel and in department stores was down 4.7 per cent. “We spend more on our houses and at restaurants and bars,” reads a council presentation to retailers. “We spend less at clothes shops. We are increasingly shopping online.” At a recent forum some retailers raised concerns that Nelson continually compared itself to Richmond. Some said that the city needed to double down on what it was good at – boutique retail experiences and hospitality venues. Council data suggests that the amount that locals spend has
stayed relatively stable over the last four years. In 2015, 60 percent of people shopped in Nelson. Now 57 percent do. Nelsonians spending in Tasman has increased from 11 per cent in 2015 to 12.6 per cent in 2018. “The role of the city centre is changing and will continue to change, and we need to figure out how best to respond to that change,” says council’s Clare Barton, who is leading the effort to revitalise the CBD. But the hospitality scene is also changing. Long-running bar Harry’s has also been sold to another proprietor, Matt Boutery, who owns Urban Bar and Eatery. Clare says the main outcome from the recent city centre forums was that “we can’t sit still and wait for others to get creative”.

Nelson mayor Rachel Reese wants to “test residents’ thoughts” on converting one of our innercity carparks into a large urban greenspace. The idea comes after Nelson City Council last month mooted the idea of a multi-level carpark being built elsewhere in the city
and the need to encourage more inner-city living. “I have a real interest in increasing greenspace and playground space within the CBD and the city development team have picked this up as a priority,” says Rachel. “I could see a Buxton Square conversion working. Other people have suggested converting the middle of Trafalgar St. But I’m more interested in the public’s ideas and getting the com-
munity on-board.” She questions whether our innercity car-parks, including Buxton, Montgomery and Wakatu, are making the best use of “flat and sunny” land in the CBD. “It is scarce in the city, and I’d rather we made it for people, rather than for single-level car occupancy.”

CBD greenspaces have many benefits - as seen in many cities around the world. They can feature play spaces, water features, grassy areas and tracks. “Greenspaces are great for the mind and the body. They provide stress reduction, an opportunity to exercise and a place to interact and meet people,” says Rachel. They are also good for climate change mitigation and adaptation. “Well-designed greenspaces are becoming increasingly important in responding to climate change impacts such as managing storm water, increased intensity rainfall
events and water filtration,” she adds. Nelson City Council has been shunned in the past when $1.5 million plans to develop Montgomery Square into a pocket park in 2011 were ruled out by the high court after legal action was sought by a group of Nelson business owners. Lack of public consultation was blamed as the key factor for its failure. But Rachel says if we want to encourage more inner-city living, greenspaces are needed. “It’s time to start floating out some bigger ideas. Let’s think about what’s possible.”

NEWS Airport continues to fly: Nelson Airport has recorded another profitable financial year continuing the unabated growth of New Zealand’s busiest regional airport as it advances a major development project. Highlights of the year include a net profit of $3.4 million, up 12 per cent on the previous year. Chief executive Rob Evans says the year ahead will see real advances in the infrastructure upgrades with the opening of terminal Stage A next month. Tracy wins top award: Sprig and Fern owner Tracy Banner was awarded the top honour at the Brewers Guild of New Zealand Awards in Nelson on Saturday night. Tracy Banner was given the Morton Coutts Trophy, and a standing ovation, for service to the industry. Tracy brings up 35 years in brewing this week. “A lot of people in this room probably aren’t even 35,” she told the audience. The event, which brought together brewers from all around the country, was held at the Trafalgar Centre. Nelson girl through to Rock Quest finals: Estella Romagnoli, from Nelson College for Girls, is through to the finals of the biggest youth music competition in the country. The finals of the Smokefreerockquest are this weekend. Close to 800 bands and solo-duos have played off in 22 towns and cities around New Zealand, with the cream of the talent set to take the stage in Auckland on Saturday.

It’s taken four months of searching, but a new home has finally been found for the wind-beaten Welcome Cloak. Its new location will be the wall of the Millers Acre Centre. The controversial sculpture was removed from its old spot at Saltwater Creek in April, after two years of tangled strands and bent bars. Nelson City Council, who paid for and commissioned the artwork, announced in May that they would be moving it to a “more sheltered” location to avoid any more wind damage. Council’s group manager community services, Roger Ball, says the Arts Selection Panel approved the relocation late last week - provided final installation costs are within budget. He says the timing, as well as the price tag for the relocation are yet to be confirmed - although an official information request from June revealed the cost of the sculpture has already come to a total of $83,043.

The Free House was home to more than 20,000 records on Sunday for Nelson's "largest ever" record fair run by Family Jewels Records. The fair ‘Black Vinyls, Brown Beer’ was a celebration of all things LP with something on offer for everyone - from the diehard collector to the first-time purchaser. Family Jewels Records co-owner Josephine Cachemaille says her husband Grant Smithies had been organising record fairs for
years. "It’s a really good way to bring in a whole bunch of people who want to sell vinyl and exchange vinyl in some way." She says it used to be mainly middle-aged men who were interested in vinyl records, but now it’s a completely different story. "It’s less specialist now, there are lots of young women which is really nice, more people are interested in them for the obvious reasons. "There’s even a girl from the college who’s turned up and wants to start a record club and we would fully set up a situation where she could do that."

Josephine says there was a "bit of a frenzy" at the beginning with everyone trying to get into other’s crates to check out their stuff, but the afternoon was a lot more relaxed. Long-time collector Alan Wastney says he owns about 6000 records and has been collecting for 40 years. "I’ve got all double-ups here today, it doesn’t matter what you sell really as long as you have a good time." Stall holder Anthony Norton collects only New Zealand artists and had a selection of his 7300 records up for sale.

Innovative minds put to the test Sara Hollyman Nelson’s creativity and innovation was on show last weekend at Hack Nelson, an event focussed on releasing the potential of local businesses. More than 85 business people, creatives and developers took part in the annual event, organised by Datacom. The participants met on Friday to form eight teams, each choosing to solve a problem put to them by local businesses. Various businesses and organisations all presented solutions around the theme “Sustainability – preparing for your future.” The businesses had free reign to present a problem to the groups ranging from ‘how do we keep our business model current with the rise of large online corporations?’ to ‘how can we connect sources of waste with consumers of waste?’ One of the judges, Datacom’s Kerry Topp, says that the event is about lifting the capabilities of locals and had double the participants this year compared to last years’ debut event. “We need, New Zealand needs,
Nelson needs, more exporters, and capability to support those people grow.” The team that took away first place were those working on the problem that Sealord presented; ‘how can we prove authenticity throughout a global supply chain for a sustainably-caught fish product?’ Sealord group manager information technology, Dave Thompson, says the team had some “very clever people” and he is looking forward to where they can go from here with the prototype. “It involves technology that I didn’t even know existed.” He says, to simplify it, the team developed a system that means every Sealord product will have a unique label on the packaging which will be part of an online system. The label can be scanned and registered at every event throughout the chain and the system can tell if it’s been registered more than once so they will be able to tell if a product is not authentic. “Our systems are pretty good, but we are reliant on other players in the supply chain. Rogue operators who copy packaging are a problem.”

Your Voice Solution for bus delays: Dear Sir, The bus route from Nelson to Richmond via Tahunanui is very quick and efficient, except for one difficulty which is the left hand turn at the southern end of Muritai Street into Parkers Road then right into Tahunanui Drive. The traffic delay that faces the bus can be for some minutes so that in the end you almost feel like telling the driver “to give it a go” (in making a quick turn). Traffic lights could fix the problem - but who wants more of those! No, I think the solution is for the bus to go straight from Rocks Road into Tahunanui Drive because it would only be a two-minute walk from anywhere on Muritai Street to well placed bus stops on Tahunanui Drive. Nelson Matters Conservation Week is an opportunity to champion the great work done by DOC and local voluntary groups in protecting nature in our region, but also to debunk some of the critics of 1080. We are so blessed with the beauty and diversity of our conservation areas at Nelson’s doorstep - sheltered bays like those in the Marlborough Sounds, stunning alpine scenery in Nelson Lakes, golden beaches in the Abel Tasman and marble mountains in Kahurangi National Park. The scenery is stunning but all is not well with our wildlife. Introduced predators like stoats, rats and possums are devastating
our native species, killing nationally 25 million native birds and chicks each year. Organisations like DOC, Project Janzoon, Brook Waimarama Sanctuary and over a dozen voluntary groups across the region are leading the fightback. Nobody likes poisons or killing animals but this work is crucial to securing the survival of our native birds. Trapping is used where it is practical but the bulk of pest control is done with 1080. It is efficient, safe and effective. 1080 naturally breaks down quickly. Thousands of water tests from 1080 operations show it poses no risk to drinking water. The
use of 1080 has the strong support of Forest and Bird, Federated Farmers, the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment and the Environmental Protection Authority. I, as Minister, ramped up DOC’s pest control efforts through the “Battle for our Birds” programme that included increased use of 1080. It is delivering stunning results. Kiwi numbers that were in decline for decades are now on the rise. Kaka numbers at Nelson Lakes are increasing. Whio have re-established in the Abel Tasman. Takahe numbers are up over 50% in the last decade and a new population has been established in Nelson

Young professionals set to have a ball Jonty Dine Business personas will be put to one side for an evening at the annual Nelson Young Professionals masquerade ball next Saturday night. Organiser Bridget McCormick says the masquerade theme was chosen to give the young professionals their anonymity back. “It is quite a nice way to come along to an event where you don’t know anyone because we will all be hiding behind a mask. It can be a good ice breaker in that respect.” The ball continues to be the highlight on the NYP calendar. Bridget says ticket sales for the event at Monaco Resort have been steady and should pick up even more as the date approaches. “The funny thing with Nelson is they are notorious for last minute sales, we always get a big rush in the last week or so, we’re pretty confident we will get good numbers.” Bridget says the profile of NYP is a lot bigger this year. “Last year we had 140 people and we are expecting a few more this year. It’s definitely our flagship event so we put a lot of effort into the ball, it’s going to be an amazing event.” Bridget says it has been fantastic to have Nelson Venues and Events onboard as the primary sponsor. She says dinner, drinks and entertainment is included in the ticket price of $95 for members and $115 for non-members. Buses to Richmond and Nelson will be provided at the end of the night to see you home safely.

New state-of-the-art security cameras are popping up around the city with a view to re-vamp the entire system and reduce crime. Nelson City Council communications manager Paul Shattock says the new CCTV cameras will come at a cost of $95,000, which was approved in council’s Long-Term Plan, and have the aim of reducing crime and improving safety for all residents. “The cameras will be monitored at times when there is a higher likelihood of crime being committed in a particular area.” He says, even though they are not monitored all the time, recorded footage from any time of the day or night can be accessed. “If it is pertinent to a specific incident and helpful to a police enquiry, it may be accessed.” Paul says work has been in progress for the last 18 months, in conjunction with Nelson Police, to consider the best locations for the four
new cameras, and the new installations mean there are now 18 locations around the city that have the cameras operating. “This installation includes replacing the older cameras,
that have been in use for many years, with the latest technology, as well as installing new cameras at four additional locations.” A Nelson Police spokesperson says the new technol-
ogy means they will have enhanced picture quality that they will be able to use for evidence. “For example, for several serious assaults on upper Bridge Street, CCTV footage has proved vital in identifying offender(s) after the event.” They say that the new cameras will also have a crime deterrent effect. Nelson Community Patrol volunteer Laurie Christian has been a member of the patrol for 25 years and says he monitors the cameras on Friday and Saturday nights for police. "The new cameras are very good, an excellent camera with good clear images." He says the old cameras were about 15 years old and beginning to have problems. "They've done a really great job installing them, it's made a big difference to what we can see." He says new camera locations include Anzac Park and some intersections around the CBD where there have been previous incidents that they have missed.

Adam is very proud of the progress Milestone Homes Nelson Bays has made over the years. “It is a real privilege to have provided this many homes (nearly 250 at the last count) for Nelsonians,” says Adam. “We are extremely fortunate to be able to contribute to the smart growth of the district with homes that will be loved by our locals for generations.” The business has changed unrecognisably over the last 11 years and has grown from a small team of two to seven. The sales team is made up of three New Home Consultants – Debra, Mark and James – who all have a passion for the building industry and helping people into their new homes. Debra has been with the company for over four years and last year won a number of national awards including New Home Consultant of the Year. Both James and Mark recently joined the team and are loving being part of the team and handing over homes to happy clients! Adam says, “the best part of the job is going along to the handovers and seeing our clients in their new home. I get such a buzz from see-

Sarah is the accounts and administration manager and is often referred to as the most important person in the office (she pays the wages)! Grease is still the word

The original high school musical is coming to town. The Nelson Youth Theatre Company are ready to kick off their ten-performance run of Grease at the Theatre Royal tomorrow night. A vibrant cast of 50, ranging in age from 13 to early 20s, will take audiences back to Rydell High in 1959 with plenty of rock 'n' roll, hand jives and slick hair. “Everyone's very excited by this one - a real high energy blast,” says the show’s director, Richard Carruthers. Featuring the classic songs ‘You’re The One That I Want’, ‘Grease Is The Word’, ‘Summer Nights’, ‘Hopelessly Devoted To You’, ‘Sandy’, ‘Greased Lightnin’ - Richard says it will be a show for even the most tired theatre

The production features the work of two of the theatre company’s choreographers, Aimee Robinson and Alex Jensen, while many of the costumes have been sourced from the United States by wardrobe manager and long-time Grease fan, Tracy Saunders. “We also have a great hairdressing team from Aboki who have prepared hair for Grease at least twice before and know the styles and looks that suit the period,” says Richard. “Everyone's really pumped and ready to break loose on stage. They've prepared hard, danced their socks off and are ready for a big and lively audience.” Grease is on at the Theatre Royal from 19 – 29 September. Wanderers pull out of cricket comp Jonty Dine Reporter

One of Nelson’s most successful cricket clubs is in crisis. For the first time since its inception in 1983, Wanderers will not field a senior side in the Nelson premier competition this season. Wanderers stalwart Hayden Ingham says it is a sad day for the club. “It’s absolutely gutting. Personally, I’ve put 14 years into what is a very proud club for thirty odd years and has had a lot of successes, so it’s a very disappointing.” Hayden says they were about four players short of fielding a full squad. “We have been short for the last few years but unfortunately, in the off season we lost six of our starting lineup, so that killed us.” Hayden says Matt Campbell and ex Wanderers great Andy Leonard put in a lot of work to try and save the side. “We just couldn’t get over the line but hopefully it’s just a one-year

Nelson Cricket general manager Dave Leonard says it is a disappointing situation for all concerned. A former club member himself, Dave played in some of the strongest sides the Brightwater club produced. “It’s not what we would wish but it has become a reality.” He says there was a sense of inevitability about Wanderers withdrawal. “The club has struggled for numbers for a season or so but have managed to get by, but there are number of things that have created a perfect storm.” He says player movement has been a big factor and there are also some issues off the field in relation to the operations of the club which need to be dealt with. He says Nelson Cricket will support Wanderers back into a situation where they can be a force again. “We are hopeful, but it comes down to the club. I have no doubt that they can come back to participate and succeed again in premier.”

Prices fall short in Tasman Trophy challenge SporTS Jonty Dine Prices Pharmacy couldn't add the Tasman Trophy to the cabinet on Saturday, going down 4643 to Marlborough champions SMOG. Prices were unable to give captain Shar Lowe the perfect send off in what was possibly her final appearance for the club as SMOG claimed regional bragging rights with a hard-fought victory. The Nelson champions were hampered by disruptions. With Holly Chandler and Dayna Whiting backing up from the game to appear in the Southern Zone volleyball tournament, Prices opted to make several positional and personnel changes throughout. "I am disappointed, we just didn’t adapt to the changes,” Shar says. However, Shar says it was good to blood some of the wider squad members such as Hana Tava and Becky Green who have played limited minutes throughout the season. "The fact they came to every
training and sat on our bench every week, they deserved it.” Played on court four at Saxton Stadium due to the volleyball tournament, Prices were guilty of simple mistakes early on, SMOG making the most of their bonus possession to take an early 4-1 lead. Holly continued her outstanding form inside the circle, her pressure on defence helping the hosts stay in touch with the Marlburians. Shar missed a shot to even the honours before the end of the first, SMOG taking a slim 12-11 lead. Wing attack Katelyn Gardiner and Shar sat out the second, replaced by Miranda Hart and Shardae Herring respectively. Shardae didn’t waste any time getting on the scorers’ sheet as both replacements made an impact to help Prices take a 23-21 lead at half-time. She stood up strongly to the impressive pair of Stacey Chandler and Bonnie Morris while Tess Eden and Dayna started to show their class to form a formidable defence with Holly,

goals with the scores remaining square for the majority of the third before SMOG edged ahead at the death 35-31. The physicality intensified in the final fifteen, a determined Holly throwing herself around the defensive circle as SMOG clung on to a slim advantage. Shar’s deadly accurate radar saw the sides go into the final five minutes locked up at 41-apiece, before the errors crept back into Prices game and SMOG’s sharp shooters Karli Murphy and Kate Gaudin put the result beyond doubt. Despite the loss, Shar says it has been a great year for the team. "Overall, it’s been a roller coaster of a season, but it was awesome to finish on a high and get to play these guys by winning the Nelson competition. I’m proud of my girls, we have had ups and downs, but we have stuck together.” The Prices stalwart says she now thinks it may be time to hang up the bib. "I think I’m done but we will see, there are just so many young kids around and they need an opportunity.”

Former All Black Wyatt Crockett was on hand to open the nomination process as the region recognises its rising sports stars. Pines unbeaten in volleyball qualifier Jonty Dine The Nelson Pines men’s volleyball team has qualified in top spot for nationals after going unbeaten at the Southern Zone Tournament over the weekend. Pines dropped only one set in their three victories at Saxton Stadium and will head to next month’s nationals the top ranked southern side. The men went two from two on day one, registering wins over Shirley and Pioneers before defeating Scorps on Sunday. In Saturday’s later game against the Pioneers, Pines looked dominant from the outset, their athleticism and desperation no match for the Christch-
urch side. The hosts put on a superb performance at the net, the velocity of their spiking game ensuring Pines maintained a healthy advantage throughout over Pioneers, winning three sets to nil. Captain Patrick Shone says it was a really good win against a good unit. "We haven’t been together long this season, so it was good that the boys stepped up.” Patrick says he is confident they can make an impact at the national tournament. "The line-up we have got is one of the strongest in years. Having Roy Ching back from Europe gives us some real depth
and the wisdom of Ben Glue gives us a nice balance.” Earlier in the day, Pines edged Shirley three sets to one. Their female counterparts met Shirley in the final game on day one with the visitors winning three sets to nil. Captain Dayna Whiting says her side knew they would need to step up against a quality side. "We just let them get ahead and against a good team like Shirley it's hard to pull back." Pines finished its qualifying campaign with a 10-2 record to finish the Southern Zones in second behind Shirley. Club volleyball nationals will take place in Auckland from October 3-6.

Grace wins weightlifting gold Kids 'have a go' at tennis clubs

The Nelson Bays Tennis Associations primary and intermediate ‘Have a Go’ open day took place at local tennis clubs on Saturday. From novices to young guns, players across the board were exposed to skills sessions around the region.
All schools from Tapawera to Golden Bay took part in a free hour of fun on court with their local tennis coach. The programme launched the summer tennis season with clubs promoting junior tennis across the region. Coaches have been busy all term
delivering the Tennis Hot Shots (THS) schools programme into 38 schools in Nelson Tasman. Both the THS Schools programme and the “Have a Go Day” enable students to try out tennis with their school mates before committing to the sport during the summer season.

When Grace Cumming tells people that she is a weightlifter, most people laugh. However, the diminutive 17-yearold’s abilities are far from a joke, having just won gold at secondary school nationals for the second year running. Grace took out the U53kg class, recording three personal best lifts including a 54kg clean and jerk. “I’d been sitting at about a 40kg clean and jerk and then on the day it just flipped, and I manage to do pretty well.” The Nelson College for Girls student went back-to-back despite limited preparation. “I had only been training for five weeks for that competition, and before that I had taken a huge break and I was not at my best whatsoever.” She says she surprised herself with her performance. “I think the adrenaline carried me through more than anything, I was just so amped up, on the platform I couldn’t hear anything.” Grace has only been involved in the sport for two years, having taken it
up for strength training to improve her volleyball game. “I started it so I could jump higher because I’m such a small person, but I got hooked. People told me I couldn’t do it because I was too small but I’m super stubborn, so I kept at it and here I am.” She says she is driven by the doubters. “That’s probably one of my favorite things, to tell people I’m a weightlifter and they say ‘seriously?’ Some of them think I’m joking.” She says, due to her slight build, people often scoff at her chosen sport. “Last year when I got called up at the NCG prizegiving probably 90 per cent of the crowd started laughing.” However, she says it simply motivates her to lift even heavier weights. “It feels good to prove that I can actually do it and when I tell them my weights that surprises them even more.” She says she loves the pressure of a big lift. “It’s literally just you, you’ve got a big crowd of people in front of you and judges watching you, it all comes down to what you can do on the day.”

AThleTics - The Athletics Nelson senior team was the first squad across the finish line at Saturday’s Queen Charlotte Relay for the thirteenth time in 14 years. Thomas Andersen ran two legs on Athletics Nelson’s senior B team in the 35.6km, fiveleg race from Picton to Havelock, recording the fastest times of the race on both of his legs. After Sam Mead gave the senior A team a one-minute lead on the opening leg, Andersen ran down Max Meffan and finished 10 metres in front after the 8.6km second leg. Fletcher Pickworth retook the lead and gave the senior. Ben Allan, running his first race in two years, was the Senior A’s fourth leg runner. Nick Matthews put the race away on the final leg and crossed the finish line in two hours, six minutes, 52 seconds, 4:19 ahead of the senior B team. Athletics Nelson. The teams will now prepare for the New Zealand Road Relay Championships in Christchurch on Oct. 6.
