Whiskey Row Where the Fun Never Stops
You’ll find most anything you want on historic Whiskey Row. Saunter through the same batwing saloon doors where Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, Big Nose Kate and other legendary heroes—and scoundrels—would belly up to the bar.
However, you’ll find more than watering holes and live country-western or contemporary music. Explore locally owned authentic antique shops, art galleries and quaint boutiques packed with original southwestern art and artifacts.

As you stroll past any of the more than 700 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places cited on the National Historic Register, you’ll be tempted to step in for a fast meal—or a fine dining experience. You’ll probably be pleased that of the more than 200 places to eat in the city, a majority are “hometown” owned and managed. They range from “Mom n’ Pop” eateries to sophisticated dining in elegant surroundings. You’ll
be surprised at the ethnic variety available, too.

You won’t escape the vibrant feeling that you are welcome, no matter where you roam the historic downtown area. Locals will greet you with genuine smile and “Howdy” or “Nice to see you.” In the center
of town, looming large over a square block ringed by century-old trees is the oft-photographed granite Courthouse. It’s the focal point for many festivals and events from late April through October.
Known as Arizona’s Christmas City, during winter months, the area around the Courthouse is home for unequaled holiday festivities. You won’t want to miss any of them. Festivities begin in late November after Thanksgiving. The first is the colorful Holiday Light Parade,” where elaborate decorated floats and holiday music will have you smiling. Ultimately, you may wind up at the community bonfire, just up the street at Mile High Middle School.
Then the first week of December features the colorful daytime Christmas Parade, with more than 75 entries. It involves almost everyone in town.
If you’re lucky enough to be here in early December, you’ll beam when the Courthouse Plaza lights turn the dark into a
kaleidoscope of holiday colors. This year will be the 61st annual lighting. You’ll join local students, townspeople and visitors in singing traditional Christmas carols. Just up the street two blocks, you’ll enjoy a Frontier Christmas staged by the Sharlot Hall Museum. You’ll be transported back to how pioneers celebrated Christmas.
If you like holiday music, you’ll relish performances of more than 100 local musicians—students, townspeople, churches and individuals—during the melodious Acker Musical Showcase the second weekend of December. Businesses throughout downtown open doors to performers, who sing, play instruments and entertain –and invite you to join in.
Whiskey Row Boot Drop the Way to Begin the Year
It’s better than New York and Times Square when the 6-foot illuminated custom-made cowboy boot “drops” at 10 p.m. and again at midnight, December 31, across the street from Courthouse Square.
You’ll cheer with the rest with live music, vendors and other festive activities to welcome the New Year. Where else but Prescott—the Boot Drop.

Yes, We Have Water and Parks
If you want water activities, you’ll enjoy the three local lakes—Willow and Watson, both on the northwest edge of the City. The third is Goldwater. Maintained by the City of Prescott, the 15-acre lake is located in lush pine forests surrounded by rugged mountain areas. The City of Prescott has boat and bicycle rentals available (www.prescottoutdoors.com, 928-925-1410).
Two others—Lynx Lake and Granite Basin Lake--are just outside the City limits. If you like kayaking and canoeing—and fishing—you can visit any of these lakes. Of course, all have picnicking and camping sites.
Want to spend time in a park? The City boasts 16 of them, all with amenities that guarantee memorable times. Some are purely recreational— walking and exercising and picnicking. Others are specialized. Some are athletic parks—softball, baseball, soccer, tennis, basketball, skateboards, rink skating and the like. One in particular—McCasland Willow Creek Park features one of only four in the U.S. custom-created Dog Parks. Canines are the most welcome visitors.

For Outdoor Lovers Trails and Maps
You’ll have to be in good shape to conquer the hundreds of miles of designated trails in the immediate Prescott area. As of last count, more than 15 distinctive named hiking, biking (and sometimes horse) trails wiggle through the natural scenic beauty of the community and the Prescott National Forest. Difficulty? Sharlot Hall Museum—only a short stroll west from the Courthouse Square, the four-acre museum and research center highlight the culture and history of the Arizona Central Highlands, the Territorial frontier and both early settlers and Native American peoples spanning 14,000 years to the present. Open daily.
Smoki Museum located on East Gurley Street just adjacent to Ken Lindley Field and Park, the museum is home for irreplaceable prehistoric and contemporary artifacts identified with Southwestern Native American history and culture.
Phippen Museum just a few miles north of downtown Prescott on Hwy 89, the museum presents unique Western art exhibitions, and educational programing. It has permanent and rotating arts exhibits throughout the year.
The Spot—A Child’s Museum—in the Prescott Gateway Mall on the east edge of the City, the children’s museum is an interactive place where children are urged to explore experiences, especially STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) concepts. Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday’s only
Guinness World Record Model Airplane Collection—This one-of-a-kind display of hand-carved model aircraft—some 5,829 of them—is located in the Udvar-Hazy Library and Learning Center at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University on Willow Creek Road.
Highlands Center for Natural History this non-profit science and ecological education center focuses upon helping children and adults discover the wonders of nature through workshops, lectures, day camps, school programs and other activities. The modern facility is at 1375 S. Walker Road on the way to Lynx Lake and the Prescott National Forest.
Heritage Park Zoological Sanctuary children and adults alike will enjoy the large naturally landscaped enclosures where they can see up-close native and exotic animals. They’ll also enjoy the covered picnic pavilion, the children’s playground and the many educational exhibits. It is on the northeast edge of Prescott at 1403 Heritage Park Road.
