Toshi’s Story

Toshi was discarded, another breeder dump left in the desert. He initially was trapped and brought to what was believed to be a safe, trusted foster situation. That safety unraveled as he was handed off without care or accountability. Less than 24 hours later, he escaped an unsecured yard and began what would become a long, exhausting journey through Prescott Valley. For six days he ran mile after mile through active work zones and across a four-lane highway. He dodged cars, heavy machinery and predators. He scavenged in a landfill and narrowly escaped being crushed by a bulldozer. Every trap set to bring him to safety

failed, he was simply too smart, too driven to survive. A donor-funded rescue effort was mobilized. A veterinarian was deployed to safely dart and sedate, along with a professional drone operator to track Toshi. At 6:40 that morning, he was

spotted. Before the drone could even launch, the first dart was delivered. But even as the sedation began to take hold, he pushed forward and disappeared from sight. The team of amazing volunteers regrouped and continued on foot, quiet, focused and unwilling to lose him. Nearly an hour later, Toshi was spotted. A second dart was delivered. Finally, the sedation took hold. Toshi was transported for veterinary care and treatment. Then he made the journey to Healing River Ranch. He will not be available for adoption. This was never about placement. It was about stepping in and making it right. Safety. Protection. Peace.

What started as a one-night gig has turned into something much more. The Offbeats — a Prescott-based trio made up of Kate Vang, Jay Arellano and David Shoemake — came together for Acker Night in 2024 and never really stopped. With a sound they describe as "a punch in the gut — so good, it'll leave you wanting more," the band has carved out a following built on raw energy, genuine friendship and a whole lot of fun. We sat down with the group to talk roots, rhythmn and what keeps them coming back to the stage.

Prescott NOW: How long have you been playing together as a band? The Offbeats: We originally came together for Acker night in 2024, but realized we had good chemistry and decided to make it an official thing. We’ve had a couple band member changes, but the core three original band members are Kate Vang on lead vocals, Jay Arellano on the drums and backup vocals, and David Shoemake on rhythm guitar and vocals.

Prescott NOW: What’s the story behind the band’s name? The Offbeats: Although we have had a few different names, David was the one who came up with the name The Offbeats, and Jay doodled a logo for us one day while at his shop (Soundroom music store). We felt that the name fit our style, and we thought it was funny to switch the words around on stage.

Prescott NOW: How do you connect with the audience during a show? The Offbeats: We are lucky enough to have good chemistry, not only as a band but as friends, so when we play we are genuinely having a great time, and the audience notices that. It’s also fun to jump off stage and either sing or play while walking around the crowd and connecting with people that way!

Prescott NOW: How would you describe your sound? The Offbeats: Like a punch in the gut — so good, it’ll leave you wanting more. Prescott NOW: What advice would you give to your younger self? The Offbeats: David’s advice would be to start playing earlier in life, and take it more seriously. My (Kate) advice would be to keep exploring music outside of your normal music tastes, and don’t let the thought that “I’m not a good singer” stop you from pursuing singing. Vocal cords are a muscle that needs to be strengthened like any other muscle, so keep on singing and working those muscles!

Prescott NOW: What motivates your band to perform? The Offbeats: I (Kate) can speak

for all of us when I say we are in it for the love of the game. We all genuinely enjoy interacting with the crowd and feeding off of their energy and having a great time on stage. Practice is one thing, but the main event is like getting laid. It’s fun, fast-paced and leaves you breathless.

Prescott NOW: What brought you to Prescott? The Offbeats: My (Kate) family moved here in 2009 from LA with our horses to escape the city life and find our rhythm out in the countryside of Williamson Valley. David was born and raised in Phoenix but moved here with his family in 2015 for the much nicer, cooler weather. Jay migrated here with his family back in the ‘90s as a kid. POTUS Visits Prescott; Statehood at Stake by Drew Desmond, Historian for the Prescott Western Heritage Foundation, Inc.

It was 5:51 p.m., Oct. 13, 1909, when President Taft’s special train pulled into the Prescott depot. “There was tremendous cheering while the band up the street vigorously played Hail to the Chief,” the Arizona Journal-Miner reported. Prescott planned long and hard to make this the perfect visit. Taft was in the middle of a route visiting the Southwest in what was the longest trip any president had ever made. After the executive party left the train, they took seats in assigned automobiles and started a parade down Cortez Street to an awaiting throng of 8,000 in the Plaza. On one side of the autos marched the Grand Army, a band of heroes of the Civil War. On the other marched the young regulars from Fort Whipple in full dress uniform. Taft ascended a platform on the

north side of Gurley Street, facing the crowd and the two-year-old Rough Rider monument. Facing him, adorning the Old Courthouse, was a large banner reading: “We Want Statehood.” In front of it all were 1,000 school-aged children, the youngest in front, the oldest in back. This was no accident. Arizona’s reputation then was largely formed by cheap fiction that left the impression it was anything but a place for families. So moved was Taft that he quickly instructed the Secret Service to remove the rope barrier between the stand and the children. “Let down the ropes and bring the people close to the stand,” he instructed. Before the president spoke, he was told of the area’s famous Hassayampa water. “Those who

drink the water from below the crossing (will) trifle with the truth, and those who drink of this water above the crossing thereafter will be celebrated for their truth and veracity. This water comes from ABOVE the crossing.” The president drank it heartily and quipped that he would like a canteen full to take back to Washington. Taft spoke for 15 minutes. The crowd applauded greatly when he declared that Arizona deserved statehood. “I observe even out of the mouths of babes and sucklings the desire for statehood!” he said. Seventh Plein Air Festival Celebrates Art in the Pines

Yavapai College’s Prescott Art Gallery is pleased to invite one and all to its annual celebration of outdoor painting. Art in the Pines: The 7th annual Prescott Plein Air Festival takes place from Aug. 26 to 30 at the Prescott Campus Gallery, the Richard Marcusen Sculpture Garden and selected scenic locations around Prescott and throughout Yavapai County. Art in the Pines will feature 22 artists from Arizona, California and Washington, painting Yavapai County’s beautiful scenery. The public will be able to observe and engage with the artists at no cost as they paint on Friday, Aug. 28, 6 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Richard Marcusen Sculpture Garden on the YC Prescott campus. The public also is invited to a reception and art sale at the Jim &

Mango is accessible via the library website as well as the Mango mobile app for iOS and Android devices. The mobile app is specifically designed for on-the-go learning, and is fully accessible from library and home computers and includes downloadable lessons that can be used offline. Through a wide variety of adaptable exercises and learning activities, learners will master new vocabulary, intuit unfamiliar grammatical structures, train pronunciation and boost their cultural knowledge about their new language through conversational,

Dignity Health, Yavapai Regional Medical Center (YRMC) gave back to the Prescott community once again. Several local organizations are now the beneficiaries of YRMC’s 2026 Community Health Improvement Grants. In all, $211,000 was awarded across seven organizations. “We are blessed to have many nonprofit organizations that make such a positive difference in our community,” says Mark Domingo, Director of Mission and Community Health at YRMC. “These grants not only reflect YRMC’s commitment to our mission of serving the most vulnerable, but they also help our community partners to deliver vital services that improve health equity and access.” The grant recipients include: • Coalition for Compassion and Justice • Northern Arizona University • People Who Care • Prescott Community Cupboard Food Bank, Inc. • Prescott Free Clinic • Polara Health • Wrapped in Love Diaper Bank Awarded annually, the grants are distributed to nonprofit 501(c)3 organizations in Yavapai County. To be chosen, nonprofits apply for funding and explain how their program or project meets a significant health need based on YRMC’s most recent Community Health Needs Assessment. Funding is given to programs that focus on making healthcare more equitable through expanding access to care, identifying social determinants of health or providing resources for healthy lifestyle and behaviors.

A signed real estate purchase agreement is not a guarantee of a home sale. A recent REALTORS® Confidence Index Survey showed that transactions today are experiencing about a 5% fallout rate. Whether a buyer or seller, prepare yourself for the most common potential pitfalls. Pitfall: Financing falls through. Buyers can be pre-approved before making an offer but then get denied the loan. Factors include: a ding on their credit, major expenses like a new car purchase, reduction in salary that changes their debt-to-income ratio or changes in lender guidelines or terms that make the loan no longer affordable. Solution: If financing becomes an issue, sellers might consider offering an extension to enable the buyers to obtain alternative financing or find a cosigner/ guarantor for the loan.
