Start Planning your Christmas Fun!

Arizona Christmas City organizers for Prescott’s annual holiday attractions in downtown Prescott are planning a fun-filled season with several free events happening in “Everybody’s Hometown.”

Festivities kick off with The Holiday Light Parade & Bonfire Festival, which returns for its 26th year Saturday, Nov. 25, starting at 6 p.m. on Cortez Street. The parade will be led by Santa and will feature more than 40 floats and music from school marching bands. The parade ends on the field at Mile High Middle School, where the Bonfire Festival will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Entrance to the field is through the gate on Goodwin Street, across from Old Firehouse Plaza.

Up next is Prescott’s 41st annual Christmas Parade and 69th annual Courthouse Lighting the first Saturday in December. From 1 to

3 p.m. on Dec. 2, the parade will fill downtown Prescott with floats, marching bands, and music — all leading up to the arrival of Santa. The Courthouse Lighting will be 6 to 6:30 p.m.; fireworks to follow.

Then, the 35th annual Acker Night will be Friday, Dec. 8, in downtown Prescott. The opening ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. on Gurley Street. On Acker Night, people stroll through downtown Prescott, taking in the holiday lights and listening to live music from more than 500 performers.

More than 100 Prescott businesses open their doors to these volunteer musicians with the shared goal of keeping music alive for local school kids. While admission is free, all tips to artists provide music lessons and instruments to local youth and support school music programs. A

free shuttle service runs from Frontier Village Shopping Center off of AZ-69.

The 2nd annual Christmas Village & ChristkindlMarket, inspired by a centuries-old European tradition, will be open Friday, Dec. 15 from 4 to 8 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 16, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 17, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on West Goodwin Street. Admission is free.

The Christkindl Angel returns to host the event, which includes outdoor amusement rides, Christmas music, visits with Santa and Clydesdale horse-drawn wagon rides around Courthouse Plaza.

Lastly, the 13th annual New Year’s Eve Boot Drop will be Sunday, Dec. 31, on historic Whiskey Row in downtown Prescott. This celebration on Montezuma Street starts at 7:30 p.m. New Year’s Eve and goes until 12:30 a.m. New Year’s Day.

Prescott Now: How long have you been playing?

Andrew Deering: I have been playing in bands and as a solo performer for the last two decades of my life. I have the passion to play multiple instruments across multiple genres.

Playing music is a profound and exhilarating experience that brings my soul complete fulfillment. It’s as if each note I play becomes an extension of my soul, expressing emotions and thoughts that words alone cannot convey.

I first played music with my dad at home. My dad was a guitar

player and he inspired me to start playing.

Prescott Now: What genre or genres of music do you play? What about them inspires you?

Andrew Deering: I don’t feel that I can be placed in the box of one genre. I play to my audience. I enjoy playing blended genres with my own personal touch in each one of them. Whatever I am playing, there is always an Americana baseline. It’s like playing music the way someone in the South would make shrimp and grits from scratch, deep and with love.

I am inspired by knowing my

audience; feeling the vibe in the room helps me draw inspiration of the songs I play. I am completely flexible when it comes to a set list. If there are certain people in the room, I play for them, versus playing what I think people may want to hear.

Prescott Now: What is the key to being a successful musical act in Prescott and Northern Arizona?

Andrew Deering: My success is not defined by my gigs. It is defined by my friends. The ones who come out and just want to share time with me while I get to play music. Being an integral part of the community is equally important to me as my music. My music tells

a story, my community fills my soul.

Prescott Now: What’s the smallest audience you’ve played for; the biggest?

Andrew Deering: I have played shows in front of four people in neighborhood bars and as large as 15,000 people at festivals. Each one of my shows, no matter what the size of my audience, is my opportunity to interact with people and share my passion with someone who may be just passing through town; and I may be the reason they come back

Prescott Now: Where do you find your inspiration for your songwriting, performances?

Andrew Deering: My inspiration comes from my upbringing. In addition to music, there was always creativity in all forms of various art surrounding me. There was always music playing in my house.

The Deering family makes instruments, plays all instruments, and has a passion for all the arts. Thinking back to some of the music that I draw my inspiration from, it would be from Jimmie Rodgers to Jimi Hendrix.

Prescott Now: What brought you to Prescott?

Andrew Deering: I grew up in Southern California, however I have been in and out of northern Arizona since I was a child. I spent many years in Austin, Texas, which left the biggest impression on me musically.

I had the opportunity to relocate to Prescott in 2019 to be closer to family. Moving to Prescott for

me was an opportunity to live a more relaxed life, enjoying a small community that I can be a part of.

It’s not just being able to share my music, it’s about spending time fishing with my children and developing relationships with people that will last a lifetime.

Halloween Candy Buyback Program a Sweet Deal for Troops

Move America Forward (MAF), a nonprofit supporting American troops on the front lines, is giving families, medical offices, schools, businesses and everyone else in the country a chance to sell back excess Halloween candy so it can be included in care packages sent to military personnel overseas.

At least one Greater Prescott business owner, registered dietician Elisa Olivier-Nielsen of EON Consulting, is participating in MAF’s Halloween Candy Buyback Program, paying $1 per pound of candy brought in up to $4 from Nov. 1-7.

“As a registered dietitian, I am looking forward to providing our community with a creative way to reduce their

sugar intake after Halloween, while promoting this wonderful program that allows people to be a blessing to someone they never met,” OlivierNielsen said. “I am delighted to be able to partner with this organization to bless our troops overseas and possibly make new connections.“

Anyone who wants to drop candy off should call her at 928.300.1542 to schedule a time to do so at her Prescott Valley office.

Families can also donate candy directly to the organization by sending it to: Halloween Candy Buyback, Move America Forward, 3105 Fite Circle Suite 108, Sacramento, CA 95827.

They can also send toiletries such as toothbrushes and toothpaste and messages of support to the troops who will receive the care packages, especially from children. This can be done with or without registering on the website, but all donations should be sent to the group by December so they can be included in the holiday care packages.

Move America Forward has donated about 700 tons of care packages to soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen serving overseas since 2006.

Pelham Blue

Pelham Blue, a “’90s pop punk rock cover band” which just started playing gigs together last spring, lucked into the Aug. 3 slot of the annual Prescott Summer Concert Series at Courthouse Plaza after another group had to bow out of it and turned it into a “flashy” all-ages party.

The quintet revved up the crowd with three-decade-old hits by Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, the Offspring, Third Eye Blind, Nirvana and other classic bands, sharing their love of and nostalgia for the raw, straightforward tunes that dominated that era.

Bassist Darrell Denlinger says the band that became Pelham Blue went through several iterations “without ever getting out of the garage,” and once the current lineup assembled, “it was a bunch of really great coincidences that all centered around this decade of really great music, that was not really being played by anyone else around here.” That passion yanked many of the 500-plus audience members, the

most they’ve ever played for, onto their feet whether they danced in front of the stage or at their seats. The mood also got a lift from a “flash mob” of young dance students led by their teacher, Lexe Niekamp of Lessons by Lexe Dance Studio, as the band played Smash Mouth’s “All Star.”

The idea was the brainchild of guitarist Cadu Medina, who does the marketing for Vivili Hospitality Group as his day job. “I wanted to do something to bring attention to The County Seat because it’s right across from the event, and I was talking to Lexe and said, ‘I was wondering how hard it would be to put together a flash mob kind of thing, where you guys are wearing County Seat t-shirts and we have some food you guys can pass around and…’ Then she cut me off and said, “I’ll do it!”

Niekamp said all 11 students who volunteered for the gig learned the simple routine from a video she posted online and did get some people in the audience to join in. “It

was one of the greatest joys of our summer,” she said.

As a proper flash mob should it surprised everyone, including most of the band. “All the band members knew about it, but I didn’t want them to get distracted over it, so I just said ‘something’s going to happen here, don’t worry about it. I wanted it to be a surprise for everyone,” Medina said.

As a new band Pelham Blue had a bit to prove to the concert series organizers, singer Chad Dixson said, but managed to knock it out of the park. One of the board members said, “we all knew this was kind of a gamble because we didn’t hear you guys play before you got here, but you guys were amazing, we want you guys back next year.”

Drummer Dan Morgarelli and guitarist Charlie Clark complete the lineup and all had a blast playing their first Courthouse Plaza concert, Medina said: “It was several layers of oh my God, this is such a cool thing.”

Chicago came back! The legendary rock ‘n’ roll band with horns played Prescott Valley’s Findlay Toyota Center in 2020 and 2022 and returned on Aug. 16 for another spectacular concert featuring its most-loved hits and deep cuts showcasing its influence on American music. Drawing from across Greater Prescott and beyond, they packed the arena with fans and filled it with the swelling tones of “25 or 6 to 4,” “Hard to Say I’m Sorry,” “Saturday in the Park,” “If You Leave Me Now” and other classics, plus tracks from their 2022 album Chicago XXXVIII: Born for This Moment.

Chicago is the first American rock band to chart Top 40 albums in six consecutive decades, including the 2020s, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.

Kate Cory - Arizona’s Pioneer Artist

A Portrayal By Brenda Cusick

Experience hearing from Territorial Pioneer Kate T. Cory in full costume as she shares her journey from “Gilded Age” NYC to the bare and minimal Mesas of the Hopi. How did a “spinster” manage that transition? Did the Hopi invite her to join them in their Pueblo? Why did she not join the tribe when they offered her this honor? Presenter Brenda Cusick will reveal details of Cory’s life in Orabi, Walpi and as a teacher to the children of Hopiland.

In the second part of her presentation, older Kate T. Cory will expound on why she moved to Prescott. What made her return to NY and help with the “Great War to End All Wars”. What other kind of art did she create - and what other museums hold them? Cory reflects on her time, art, triumphs and failures as she nears the end of her life and heads to the Pioneer Home in this “real life” portrayal of a Prescott powerhouse who started Prescott as the art town that it is today.

Kate T. Cory was instrumental in helping design the Museum of Indigenous People’s building (aka “Smoki”). Her art was commissioned by the Santa Fe Railroad, the Department of the Interior and 25 of her pieces are in the Smithsonian.

While the true winners of the season 7 Dancing for the Stars Boys & Girls Clubs’ signature fundraising event were the children and teens served by local clubhouses, awards went to dancers Stan Goligoski and Kelly Roberson for Best Production and Sheri Shaw and Dre Caldwell for Best Performance. Danell Riggs and Ronnie DeBenedetta were awarded the mirror ball for raising the highest amount in overall donations during the Aug. 25 and Aug. 26 event.

The fundraiser consisted of a dazzling dance competition that paired local celebrities and professional dancers, all while raising financial support through sponsorships, votes and tickets. All proceeds benefit local programs.

Season 7 was presented by El Gato Azul, Barrett Floors, Lamb Chevrolet, Granville

Universal Homes, NFM Lending and Yavapai College and was held at the Jim and Linda Lee Performing Arts Center.

Once again, performances wowed and entertained the audience at the theater and everywhere through the event livestream. Teams truly captured the cheerful audience’s attention with productions filled with creativity, surprise and dazzle.

The success of Dancing for the Stars is only possible thanks to the faithful support of the community as a whole. Heartfelt gratitude goes to each sponsor, attendee, voter, volunteer and supporter. Understanding the numbers Remains Key to Local Housing

Market data continues to reflect the uniqueness of our local economy according to the housing report released in September by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® (PAAR).

Total sales across the region monitored by PAAR rose 5.5% in August 2023, reflecting 345 homes sold overall, compared to only 327 homes sold in August 2022. These gains are largely reflective of the exceptional month seen in Prescott Valley, which recorded 97 total sales in August, a 24.4% increase.

Another highlight in the data for the Quad Cities is the increase in most areas of median sales prices; Prescott showed the greatest gain, ending the month of August with a median sold price of $605,500, a 10.6% increase from the previous month.

Chino Valley finished the month with a

median sold price of $399,900 (up 9.3%) and Prescott Valley closed the month of August with a median sold price of $450,000 (up 3.9%). Dewey-Humboldt showed no change year over year, closing August 2023 with a median sold price of $450,000.

However, months of inventory remain a concern in the Quad Cities as it does across the nation, and understanding the difference between the month-over-month numbers and the year-to-date data is key to understanding how to maximize opportunities for all property owners.

“Locally we only have about three and half months of inventory available, which could continue to influence rising home prices and discourage people from pursuing their dream of a new home,” said M. Faye Humphrey, 2023 PAAR President.

“However, we want folks to have

confidence in the local market and seek out a REALTOR® they can trust to fully explain the numbers and guide them through their options.”

Months of inventory dropped 5.6% in August, with only 3.6 months of inventory remaining across the Quad Cities region at the end of August. At this time last year, the median days on market in the region was only 13 days.

While that number has risen from January through August of this year to 28 days, individual areas vary significantly in the speed at which homes in their niche markets remain available.
