Participants must register to take part in the tryout. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at 10:00 a.m. Tryouts begin at 10 a.m. sharp. Participants must be aged 20 years or older. The cost to participate is $50/person (only cash or money order will be accepted, no personal checks). Everyone who participates in tryouts will receive a T-shirt. Participants must provide their own cleats, shorts and accessories. The tryout is non-contact, so pads and helmets are not necessary. Coaches will be running eight on eight drills and more. Participants also must be prepared upon their arrival. No locker room facilities will be available, although restrooms will be accessible. The coaching staff, including Special Teams Coach and Chaplin, Matt Caward and head coach, Dominic Bramante, will evaluate participants. Sacred Trees at Highlands Center for Natural History – 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM — What began as a curiosity about the traditions and folklore related to trees planted in the center of many farms in Norway, ‘Tuntre,’ and Sweden, ‘Vårdträd,’ led Douglas Hulmes, emeritus professor of environmental studies and education at Prescott College, to a recognition of a tradition that can still be observed in the cultural landscape today. Learn how mythology and folklore of a culture influence their perception of place and how ecological knowledge of a landscape compare with ‘kjennskap,’ or what is sacred in a landscape. It will include a discussion of what is considered to be sacred in nature in the U.S., and specifically around Prescott. Sacred Trees at Highlands Center for Natural History – 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM — What began as a curiosity about the traditions and folklore related to trees planted in the center of many farms in Norway, ‘Tuntre,’ and Sweden, ‘Vårdträd,’ led Douglas Hulmes, emeritus professor of environmental studies and education at Prescott College, to a recognition of a tradition that can still be observed in the cultural landscape today. Learn how mythology and folklore of a culture influence their perception of place and how ecological knowledge of a landscape compare with ‘kjennskap,’ or what is sacred in a landscape. It will include a discussion of what is considered to be sacred in nature in the U.S., and specifically around Prescott. It’s always good to have a smart son. And without knowing your property, I would say he is probably “definitely” correct. Paint, carpet and cleanup are relatively inexpensive ways to improve a property and get back every dime, plus more. In fact, they could easily bring double or triple the cost back to you in an increased sales price. The best way to determine whether your investment will get you the returns you want, is to compare similar properties that have sold in your neighborhood. By similar, I mean homes that were built around the same time, are in your square footage range and have the updates you are describing. I can help you with this or if you have a Realtor, ask for their opinion. But it sounds as though you have one in the family, and although Texas might be different than Prescott, some things remain the same. Basic home improvements bring more value. Good luck with your projects!

There is something magical about being in the forest at night, when the shadows lengthen and the creatures of the night begin to stir. This family friendly event highlights our creepy, crawly, feathery, and furry nocturnal neighbors. You can wear your best skeleton costume and then go hunt for real animal bones by moonlight. Or watch real bats fly amongst the trees! You can test your night vision skills on a guided night hike, make a craft to take home, and finish the evening by the campfire listening to an interactive story. Pre-registration is required. The Launch Pad Teen Center is a youth-driven center that provides after school programming, leadership opportunities, free academic mentorship and tutoring, summer camps, adventure trips, youth workforce development, and fun recreational activities and events for local teens. The Launch Pad works with all types of teens in the Prescott area and its mission is to incite teen confidence and empowerment through innovative community education and engagement. ater is life. And in the Southwest, our life comes from rain. The rain supports all life in the region, sustaining plants, animals and human existence.
For the Navajo people, the Diné, rain comes in three forms: Male rain — the hard pounding storms that create deep cuts through the desert landscape; Female rain — the soft, gentle rain that floats in on dark clouds and nourishes Mother Earth; and Trickster rain — or as we sometimes know it, virga; dark clouds that come in with moisture and lightning that you can feel in the air, but rain that never touches the ground.
Storm-pattern weavings come partially from the observations of thousands of Diné weavers over centuries watching the rain and storms across their lands. We currently are exhibiting storm-pattern weavings through the end of the year at the Museum of Indigenous People, formerly the Smoki Museum.
A Diné Medicine Man, named Emory Shepard, once described (speaking only in the Navajo language) the storm pattern to our Navajo Rug and Indian Art Auctioneer, Bruce Burnham as:
The figure in the center of the design is the male rain, or storm. Extending
from the top and bottom of the central element are lightning bolts that usually occur with male storms.
Shepard indicated that the connections, or zigzag lines extending out from the central figure, represented the trickster (or coyote) storms with their thunder and lightning. The buglike images in many rugs refer to the water bugs that race across the lake when a storm approaches. Elongated elements often represent corn tassels where the sacred ‘tá di díín’ — corn pollen is gathered for prayer.
Other elements are also present in storm-pattern weavings. The central figure, most often a square or rectangular design, is often referred as the “lake.” These are sometimes fairly plain, others have designs within them, or are a whirling log design seen in many rugs before 1939.
Whirling logs, as you may know, represent wind, direction and change, among other things. In the four corners of a storm-pattern weaving are images representing four of the sacred mountains of Dinétah: Mount Hesperus, the San Francisco Peaks, Mount Taylor and Mount Blanca. Sometimes, they are simple blocks, other times they are represented by triangles and other shapes and images. Some say that the storm pattern came out of the sand-painting weavings that contained sacred designs. Elements from those weavings are often present in storm-pattern weavings.
J.B. Moore, a trader that ran the Crystal Trading Post in the Chuska Mountains from 1896 to 1911, was the first to popularize Navajo weavings when he produced a catalog of rugs
available for purchase in 1903. Plate IX from that book features what is referred to as a storm within a storm, actually a triple storm.
The catalog for this exhibit, created by Mark Winter, owner of the Historic Toadlena Trading Post, emulates J.B. Moore’s 1911 catalog but features only storm pattern weavings. Most of the amazing weavings in the catalog appear in the current one-of-a-kind exhibit. Previously, these rugs could have only been seen by visiting the Toadlena Trading Post while they were on display in 2019.
