ANIMAL GUARDIAN NETWORK PROVIDES LIFE-SAVING CARE TO NEGLECTED ANIMALS. 501(C)(3) NONPROFIT ANIMAL SANCTUARY
This is a delicate subject, but it must be said. One of the greatest responsibilities we have to the animals who trust us is knowing when to let them go. Love makes us want to hold on, but we cannot let our need for more time become their suffering. When their quality of life fades, we must find the strength to make the decision they cannot make for themselves. It is kinder to let them leave while they can still feel our touch and hear our voice, than to wait until suffering has depleted them completely. Hoping they will pass on their own while they suffer is unfair to them, sparing us the heartbreak but not sparing their pain. They depend on us to put their comfort before our fear of saying goodbye. Helping your best friend peacefully over the bridge isn’t giving up. It’s taking their pain and making it ours, one final act of love. Kind, compassionate people can help you, in your home, when that time comes. A kind passing wraps your heart in comfort; an unkind one you carry heavily.

Animal Guardian Network at Healing River Ranch partners with Desert Paws at Peace to help seniors who can’t afford humane euthanasia, covering costs and returning their ashes in an urn. Supporting Animal Guardian Network has always meant more than a donation. It means becoming part of their story. Carrie Singer, Founder/President Animal Guardian Network at Healing River Ranch

THROUGH THE
DECADES BAND Through the Decades takes audiences on a musical journey, blending blues, country, classic rock and rockabilly while putting its own spin on familiar favorites. Prescott NOW spoke with the band about the meaning behind their name, their crowd-pleasing approach and the different paths that brought these musicians to Prescott. Pictured Left to Right: Steve Goddard, Leanne Coon, Mark Coon, Jeff Balasa
Prescott NOW: How long have you been playing together as a band? Through the Decades: The original band started in October of 2024. The current members have been together since January 2025. We made our debut at The Yard Gastropark in May 2025.
Prescott NOW: What’s the story behind the band’s name? Through the Decades: Originally, we thought it was a play on words because we had a band member with a birthday from every decade, ‘50s-‘70s. But in reality, the name stuck because we decided to focus on music from those specific decades. As time has passed and we have grown together as a band, we’ve added more decades to our repertoire and feel the name fits us better than ever.
Prescott NOW: How do you connect with the audience during a show? Through the Decades: Leanne is really the “mouthpiece” of the band. She interacts with the audience — welcoming, encouraging dancing, giving away band swag and even working the crowd with the microphone so they can sing along.
Prescott NOW: How would you describe your sound? Through the Decades: We aren’t really an oldies band, although we do a lot of oldies music. Only having a three-piece instrumental can sometimes create a challenge when the original songs have lots of keys or horns in them. We’ve found success in taking those songs and making them our own. We love that we can perform all different genres from blues to country to classic rock to rockabilly and take the audience along for a journey through time.

Prescott NOW: What is the most memorable moment of your career so far? Through the Decades: Mark (drummer): As a pioneer of internet radio, winning best internet radio station of the year three years in a row was pretty spectacular. Coming back to the drums after 40 years away, now every gig feels like a fantastic memory in the making. Steve (bass and support vocals): More than any one big moment, I remember all the people I have had the pleasure of playing with. Leanne (lead vocals, aka “the mouthpiece”): I’d have to say singing the National Anthem at the Irwindale Speedway with my dad in his race car underneath my platform will always be a very special memory. Jeff (lead guitar and vocals): Too many to recall, just enjoy playing music as much as I do.
Prescott NOW: What advice would you give to your younger self? Through the Decades: Leanne: Instead of being so driven toward the future, enjoy the moment IN the moment. Mark: Keep playing the drums,
even if you have to ship your drum set all over the world! And don’t forget to wear hearing protection! Steve: Don’t take advice from strangers from the future! (He’s the funny one.) Jeff: My advice would be to learn as much about your instrument as possible.
Prescott NOW: What brought you to Prescott? Through the Decades: Mark and Leanne: Both having been stationed or living in Southern AZ for a portion of our younger lives, we wanted to return and retire somewhere in the state, preferably the cooler part. After many visits to Prescott, we knew we wanted to enjoy the small town feel, the great live music scene and the community service opportunities the area offered. Additionally, the support of small businesses was a huge motivation to move Cupcakes by Leanne here. Steve: After moving here from Detroit, my wife and I love the town, the music scene and the fact that it’s not 5 degrees outside in the winter. Jeff: What brought me to Prescott? My wife!

PRESCOTT AREA ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®
There’s No Single ‘Data Center Effect’ on Housing Markets submitted by Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® Data centers’ impact on real estate is dramatically different depending on the local market, according to the 2026 Data Center Impact Report from the National Association of REALTORS®. The report combines a national, state and county-level data analysis with a survey of agents working in these markets to paint a fuller picture of what data center growth means for housing, jobs and utility costs. Data centers are highly concentrated in a small number of markets. While they are found across much of the country, 92% of the U.S. counties have no mapped data centers, and only 1% have 10 or more. Some of the largest clusters are in Northern Virginia, where Loudoun and Prince William counties account for about 19% of all mapped data centers. Other major clusters include Silicon Valley (5%), central Ohio, including Franklin and Licking counties (5%),
40 Prescott NOW November 2026
the Phoenix area (4%) and central Washington (4%). Counties with more data centers generally have higher home values, higher incomes and stronger longterm job growth. The median home value in counties without data centers is $174,500. In counties with 10 or more data centers, the median home value is $431,750. In counties with a high concentration of data centers, the higher median home price and stronger price growth are not necessarily driven by the presence of data centers. These counties were already high-income, highly educated technology hubs before the recent surge in new facilities. The REALTOR® survey in the report finds there is not one singular data center effect on the housing market. Thirty-eight percent of respondents reported a data center already in place or in development
in their market. Perceptions of the residential impact were mixed, with 25% seeing a positive effect on nearby home values and 22% a negative one. The commercial picture was more clearly positive, with 50% reporting increased nearby commercial property values and 42% reporting increased demand for nearby commercial space, particularly industrial properties and land. At the same time, REALTORS® pointed to real client concerns, led by energy costs (61%) and water use (56%). NAR does not currently have an official policy position on data centers. This research is intended to help NAR better understand their potential impacts on housing, commercial real estate, local economies and communities as the issue continues to evolve. PRESCOTT WESTERN HERITAGE FOUNDATION
The Great Fire’s Effect on the Plaza by Drew Desmond, Prescott Western Heritage Foundation Historian Before the Great Fire of July 14, 1900, the Courthouse Plaza was described as a “desolate and neglected waste.” The white rail fence surrounding it was beyond repair, and the Weekly JournalMiner had called for its removal five years earlier. The Great Fire finished the fence. Not by burning, but by being kicked down and tossed aside as businesses set up shanties and other temporary structures on the Plaza while they cleared the destruction and built the downtown buildings familiar and historic to us today. “The temporary town on the Plaza does not seem to decrease any,” the paper observed. Several of these were brand-new businesses seeking to locate downtown. Prescott was poised to bounce back even healthier economically. In late May 1901, the county started removing some of the abandoned shanties. All brand new businesses had to move to a street address.
After the Plaza was cleared, improvements were made, supervised by JA Kusche, a professor of horticulture, who traveled to Prescott to take the job. “Plants, indigenous to the territory and showing what can be done in the improvement of them by cultivation, will be (planted, including) native flowers,” the paper wrote. First, trenches were dug “for the piping of the water for the Courthouse and the grounds.” Labor for all the improvements came largely from those convicted of petty crimes. The following May, the JournalMiner admonished people to be patient. “The Plaza will soon be reclaimed, and when finished, will be a resort.” Gravel walks were being laid, “and inside 30 days, there will be something to admire.” Kusche enjoyed the work and fell in love with the city. By the end of June, things were growing nicely. However, in 1903, Kusche executed a different plan. He obtained 2,500 cacti and
planted them on a pyramidal mound. That would be the last year Kusche held the job. Many believed he had gone too far. Other gardeners were hired, but the expense was eventually considered too costly. In the end, the Plaza became a shaded plot of grass watered, in part, by the infrastructure Kusche installed. The Plaza would undergo more changes, principally the Rough Rider Monument in 1907, several other bronze statues and the current courthouse. Drew Desmond can be reached through the Western Heritage Center at 156c S. Montezuma St., 928.910.2307.

This free, self-guided annual event offered attendees an opportunity to visit with the artists, observe their creative processes and purchase one-of-a-kind works in many different mediums, ranging from

painting and ceramics to jewelry and glass. This year’s art centers included the Mountain Artists Guild, the Phippen Museum and the ’Tis Annex Art Education Building. Each year, attendees of the Tour report that one of the most intriguing aspects is the opportunity to observe artists as they demonstrate their craft. This experience allows attendees to learn about the materials, techniques and processes used
in creating a work of art. Among many others, this year’s diverse selection of artists included: Lee Anets, ceramics, Prescott Valley Lee is a ceramic studio artist who pays attention to the natural world around her. She was raised in the Southwest, where the beauty and life of the land, with traces of those who came before her, quietly inform her work. Working in clay feels to her like participating in something both ancient and ongoing.
Patty Lindsey, glass, Chino Valley Patty introduces art lovers to the world of fused and slumped glass. She loves showing people how these pieces are made, and aims to get visitors excited about the process and the possibilities of glass. Jim Clark, woodworking, Chino Valley Inspired by the wood grains and the smells of working with wood, Jim creates oneof-a-kind burl wood bowls and handmade rustic furniture. Native woods such as oak, walnut, pine, mesquite, elm and juniper are used in most pieces. Joe Duffy, metal, Prescott Valley Joe is a retired CPA with a torch — what could go wrong? His father was John Duffy, a 1960s metal artist. Joe started welding with his dad at age seven. His passion is creating beautiful art for the spaces people call home. He specializes in tree-of-life sculptures, metal chimes and large outdoor art. Dorothy Dooley, painting, Prescott Dorothy delights in translating the unique beauty of Prescott, its scenery and wildlife, into paintings. Conveying the awe and emotion she experiences as she moves through the landscape brings her joy and purpose. Michael Smith, mixed media, Prescott Mike loves collecting and finding unique natural pieces that are art in their own right, and combining those pieces in various ways to create something beautiful. The combining and construction is almost as much fun as collecting the pieces. He also enjoys showing people how to create their own works of art.

ARIZONA’S CHRISTMAS CITY
Arizona’s Christmas City Unveils its 2026 Holiday Festivities submitted by Helken & Horn Advertising Agency Downtown Prescott will glow with holiday magic again this season, welcoming families and visitors to a lineup of free, festive celebrations. Kick off the fun with the 29th annual Holiday Light Parade & Bonfire Festival on Saturday, Nov. 28, at 6 p.m. on Cortez Street. Led by Santa, the parade features over 40 illuminated floats and music from local school bands. At Mile High Middle School’s field 7 to 8:30 p.m. enjoy music, Santa visits and reindeer games — and a closer look at the live performances from Prescott High School and Bradshaw High School marching bands. Entrance is through the gate on Goodwin Street, across from Old Firehouse Plaza. and music leading up to the arrival of Santa. Afterward, children can share their holiday wishes with Santa on the Courthouse Plaza until 5 p.m. The Courthouse Lighting begins with live Christmas music at 5 p.m., followed by the illumination of the Courthouse and more than 80 surrounding trees at 6 p.m. with fireworks. A free shuttle service will be provided this day from noon to 8pm from the high school to downtown. The joy continues with the 38th annual Acker Night Friday, Dec. 11, downtown. The opening ceremony kicks off at 5 p.m. on Gurley Street. On Acker Night, guests stroll beneath holiday lights while savoring live performances from more than 500 musicians. Over 100 Prescott businesses open their doors to these volunteer artists, all united by a heartfelt mission: keeping music alive for local schoolchildren. While admission is free, every tip to the
artists helps provide music lessons and instruments to local youth and supports school music programs. Free shuttle service is available from the Yavapai College on Sheldon Street. Ring in the New Year at the 16th annual New Year’s Eve Boot Drop on historic Whiskey Row. The festivities on Montezuma Street begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, and continue until 12:30 a.m. New Year’s Day. Feel the excitement of two boot drops at 10 p.m. and midnight, as a 6-foot-tall, illuminated cowboy boot descends from the Palace Building. Enjoy live music, fireworks, food trucks, carnival games, and giveaways. Arizona Christmas City events are presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, Findlay Auto Group Prescott, Friends of the Jersey Lilly and the City of Prescott.
