The Greater Prescott community will honor the veterans and active military who have defended our nation with a Veterans Day Parade Nov. 11. Opening ceremonies will begin at 10:30 AM at the intersection of Cortez and Union streets in downtown Prescott, and the marching starts at 11 AM.
This year’s theme is “Honoring Our Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom Veterans … A New Generation of Warriors,” and awards will be given in seven categories of parade entries, along with a Best Overall award.

Scandalous Hands
Local band Scandalous Hands played the Summer Concert Series held annually at Courthouse Plaza in downtown Prescott on Aug. 18. The quartet specializes in modern takes on classics from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s and draws their biggest crowd of the year by closing out the series.

For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.

Prescott Now: How long have you been playing?
Dirty Halos: Our current lineup of Kenn Duncan, vocals and guitar; Chris Bennett, lead guitar and vocals; Anton Teschner, bass and vocals; Steve Nelson, drums; and occasionally Drew Hall, guitar and vocals, has been playing together for just about one year.
Kenn and Drew started writing and playing together in 2017, got a band together and recorded an album of originals called No Agenda in 2019. That incarnation of Kenn, Drew with Gigi Gonaway on drums and Marcus Weeden on bass only played a few shows before the
lockdown started in 2020. The CD copies of our album arrived the day after the lockdown started.
As things began to open back up, lives had changed.
Kenn and Chris met in 2021, became fast mates. We started playing together, working and playing open mics. Soon Anton and Steve rounded out the lineup.
Prescott Now: What genre or genres of music do you play? What about them inspires you?
Dirty Halos: We usually say we play indie rock with an Americana flair.
We draw our covers from almost every era of music from the 60s through today, bands like Men At Work, Eurythmics, Inxs, Elvis Costello and Elvis Presley, Tom Petty, the Rolling Stones, Jackson Browne to Ryan Adams, Gov’t Mule, JJ Grey, Wilco and the Drive-By Truckers.
Our original music follows in the footsteps of all these influences, so you will hear hints and connections to both songs of yesteryear as well as modern bands in our songs.
Prescott Now: What is the key to being a successful musical act in Prescott and Northern Arizona?
Dirty Halos: Prescott has been amazing, the music community here is incredibly supportive, all the musicians we’ve come across always ready to help, make suggestions on venues and love getting to play music with each other.
I must include venues as well; we’ve been lucky to tap into a few spots that bring us in regularly, and that’s been an amazing help in building our band.
Prescott Now: What’s the smallest audience you’ve played for; the biggest?
Dirty Halos: Chris and Kenn played a small event to support U.S. vets, just about 25 people, and our post lockdown album release party we had about 130 to 150 listeners, dancers and partiers. No matter the size of the crowd we really love to bring it.
Prescott Now: Where do you find your inspiration for your songwriting, performances?
Dirty Halos: So much of our inspiration comes from the music we all listen to individually and together. In the original material Kenn says, “I have to say I also draw from just real-life experience, my own and my friends and family. Our original song Worst Enemy was written in a Prescott bar on Whiskey Row as I was waiting for my turn to play at an open mic. Back then I was very green and hopping up to play music was still very foreign, it occurred to me that sometimes I was my own worst critic…. enemy. Also there have been times when I’ve read stories or seen movies that inspire songs.”
Prescott Now: What brought you to Prescott?
Dirty Halos: We all converged on Prescott for different reasons, at different times, Chris being the newest here just four years now and coming the farthest; he hails from Wolverhampton, England. Anton and Steve have played in Prescott for many years. Kenn started playing music later in life about 10 years ago.

Rachael Plays Guitar
Rachael Plays Guitar celebrated the release of her album "Bitter Songs that Sound Sweet" Aug. 26 at the Elks Theatre and Performing Arts Center in downtown Prescott in a night focused on celebrating original music.
After Kaleena and the Kismet provided a buoyant opening set, Rachael Beck performed new songs fitting the theme of her new album and other guitar-driven pop from her catalogue. She and her band drew a diverse audience that proved her music’s wide appeal.

Kate Cory - Arizona’s Pioneer Artist
A Portrayal By Brenda Cusick
Experience hearing from Territorial Pioneer Kate T. Cory in full costume as she shares her journey from “Gilded Age” NYC to the bare and minimal Mesas of the Hopi. How did a “spinster” manage that transition? Did the Hopi invite her to join them in their Pueblo? Why did she not join the tribe when they offered her this honor? Presenter Brenda Cusick will reveal details of Cory’s life in Orabi, Walpi and as a teacher to the children of Hopiland.
In the second part of her presentation, older Kate T. Cory will expound on why she moved to Prescott. What made her return to NY and help with the “Great War to End All Wars”. What other kind of art did she create - and what other museums hold them? Cory reflects on her time, art, triumphs and failures as she nears the end of her life and heads to the Pioneer Home in this “real life” portrayal of a Prescott powerhouse who started Prescott as the art town that it is today.
Kate T. Cory was instrumental in helping design the Museum of Indigenous People’s building (aka “Smoki”). Her art was commissioned by the Santa Fe Railroad, the Department of the Interior and 25 of her pieces are in the Smithsonian.

Arizona Christmas City organizers for Prescott’s annual holiday attractions in downtown Prescott are planning a fun-filled season with several free events happening in “Everybody’s Hometown.”
Festivities kick off with The Holiday Light Parade & Bonfire Festival, which returns for its 26th year Saturday, Nov. 25, starting at 6 PM on Cortez Street. The parade will be led by Santa and will feature more than 40 floats and music from school marching bands. The parade ends on the field at Mile High Middle School, where the Bonfire Festival will take place from 7 to 8:30 PM Entrance to the field is through the gate on Goodwin Street, across from Old Firehouse Plaza.
Up next is Prescott’s 41st annual Christmas Parade and 69th annual Courthouse Lighting the first Saturday in December. From 1 to 3 PM on Dec. 2,
the parade will fill downtown Prescott with floats, marching bands, and music — all leading up to the arrival of Santa. The Courthouse Lighting will be 6 to 6:30 p.m.; fireworks to follow.
Then the 35th annual Acker Night will be Friday, Dec. 8, in downtown Prescott. The opening ceremony will begin at 5 PM on Gurley Street. On Acker Night, people stroll through downtown Prescott, taking in the holiday lights and listening to live music from more than 500 performers.
More than 100 Prescott businesses open their doors to these volunteer musicians with the shared goal of keeping music alive for local school kids. While admission is free, all tips to artists provide music lessons and instruments to local youth and support school music programs. A free shuttle service runs from Frontier
Village Shopping Center off of AZ-69.
The 2nd annual Christmas Village & ChristkindlMarket, inspired by a centuries-old European tradition, will be open Friday, Dec. 15 from 4 to 8 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 16, 11 AM to 8 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 17, 11 AM to 3 p.m. on West Goodwin Street. Admission is free.
The Christkindl Angel returns to host the event, which includes outdoor amusement rides, Christmas music, visits with Santa and Clydesdale horse-drawn wagon rides around Courthouse Plaza.
Lastly, the 13th annual New Year’s Eve Boot Drop will be Sunday, Dec. 31, on historic Whiskey Row in downtown Prescott. This celebration on Montezuma Street starts at 7:30 p.m. New Year’s Eve and goes until 12:30 AM New Year’s Day.

Sellers' market persists in Quad Cities Housing Market
Total sales in the Quad Cities in September took a slight dip year-over year, falling 5.9 percent, according to the Multiple Listing Service of the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® (PAAR). The median home selling price in the region was $475,500 in September while closed sales totaled 270.
Prescott Valley posted the largest growth in home sales locally, with a nearly 34 percent increase from last year for a total of 95 homes sold in September. In Prescott, 128 homes sold last month, just 16 less than this time last year. Months of inventory in both towns remained low, though Prescott Valley’s inventory of just 2.5 months was significantly lower than Prescott’s 4.1 months.
Prescott posted the highest September median selling price at
$510,000 while homes went under contract in a median time of 27 days. Meanwhile, Prescott Valley’s median sales price grew by 0.5 percent from a year ago to reach $462,400 in September. Homes there spent a median of 25 days on the market.
“Homebuyer demand remains exceptionally strong throughout the Quad Cities with the steady increase in local home prices reflecting a healthy and desirable real estate market,” said Faye Humphrey, PAAR’s 2023 President. “We anticipate it will continue to be a competitive market with the balance tipped toward sellers throughout the remainder of this year.”
Chino Valley had the greatest median sales price increase in the region, jumping up to $381,100 with 25 closed home sales. Dewey-Humboldt
had 22 closed home sales, just four less than this time a year ago. The median sales price was $372,500. There were 952 homes listed for sale in the Quad Cities at the end of September, a three percent decrease from the September 2022 total of 984. Arizona Cowboy Poets Gathering

The 35th Arizona Cowboy Poets Gathering moseyed back into town Aug. 10-12 to present another bonanza of talent in the form of more than 40 poets, musicians and storytellers reporting from the world of the working cowboy, most of whom are or have been a part of the working cowboy’s environment and workplace. Day and afternoon sessions with performances and discussions were spread across Yavapai College’s Prescott campus. Full evenings of entertainment were hosted all three nights at YC’s Jim and Linda Lee Performing Arts Center, headlined by musicians Trinity Seely and The Cowboy Way and poet Doris Daley. Awards were given, Coffee with the Cowboys was served, ranching history was celebrated and everyone left with a renewed appreciation for the western way of life.

Short, Steep Workout GLASSFORD SUMMIT TRAIL IS

Prescott has the famed 100mile network of scenic multiuse trails, but the Town of Prescott Valley has one of the shorter but tougher treks around in the Glassford Hill Summit Trail.
It’s 4.2 miles round-trip and carves a path along the scrubby
surface of this landmark of central Greater Prescott, with a nearly continuous incline punctuated by eight switchbacks. Each has a bench for those who need to take a break on the way up or down. Many users appreciate its convenient location and quick
turnaround for a strenuous workout. The trail is well-graded, though rocky in spots, and wide enough for you to comfortably pass other users when needed. It’s labeled as a “primitive” trail by the Town but does have a few interpretive signs about its geologic and
civilizational history, plus three iron horse sculptures grazing on the grassland. There is a restroom facility at the trailhead.
The trail’s first mile isn’t as steep as the second as it proceeds toward the north face of the hill, providing a close-up view of the grassland that for too many is just drive-thru country on the way to Interstate 17. After you pass the Town’s water tower the incline really kicks in, presenting a true fitness challenge for those who hike, and especially those who run, the remaining mile.
Those who reach the summit are rewarded with 360-degree views of Prescott Valley, Prescott

and the surrounding mountains, helpfully labeled with metal signs cut to mimic their shapes. There’s also a historical display and, at trail’s end, a couple of picnic tables where the vistas are the most outstanding.
The lack of shade on most of the trail makes carrying water and wearing sunscreen a necessity year-round. The trail is also popular with night hikers seeking cooler weather and starlight, but users should be aware of the wildlife at all times of day — rattlesnakes on the trail, yes, but also pronghorn and antelope, plus lizards and other smaller critters.
This trail winds around the side of Prescott Valley’s tallest hill, a volcanic cone active some 12 to 14 million years ago, according to geologic evidence. Archeologists have traced settlements by the Mountain Patayan people in the area surrounding the hill as far back as 14,000 years ago. After being known by white settlers in the 1800s as “Bald Mountain” for its near-complete lack of trees, it was formally named after Col. William Glassford. He used a heliographic station on the hill to communicate via Morse code as part of a sophisticated regional network, and a replica stands today near the summit.
The trailhead is off Castle Drive just south of Antelope Lane and is accessible from Prescott East Highway via Antelope or Sunset lanes.
