Astronomers suspect that a supermassive black hole may exist at the center of every galaxy, including our own. EmbryRiddle astronomer Nick Devereux will present the evidence in the form of a guided tour of the center of our Milky Way galaxy, as well as the nuclei of several other nearby galaxies, including M87 which was recently in the news following the release of the first image ever obtained with the Event Horizon Telescope.

The series is hosted by local singer/songwriter Jo Berger and will feature a variety of acoustic, contemporary and traditional styles of music. More than 200 musicians from throughout the Southwest came to take part in the longest-running folk music event in Arizona. More than 90 performances were held in different locations throughout the Sharlot Hall Museum grounds.

The net proceeds benefit B Organic Farm, What the Food Film and Make 100 Healthy Foundation programs. The evening is hosted by John Murphy’s Make 100 Healthy Foundation, a non-profit, whose mission

is to help grow 1,000,000 new “Victory Gardens.” The goal is to reduce diabetes, obesity and lack of nutrition. The foundation supports local farms that feed the needy and gardening programs that teach the lost art of gardening. “As the founder of the Make 100 Healthy Foundation, I am proud to host this annual event that helps us support local farms, gardening and nutritional programs,” said Murphy. The action-packed evening starts with a Special Tribute to our Veterans in attendance and a Victory Garden history tour. The night features John Murphy “Your Healthy Longevity Guy” as MC and Host. John helps people build a healthy lifestyle for longevity and is the driving force behind the Victory Garden Family. The evening will feature two compelling Keynote Speakers. Karen vanBarneveld, producer of the documentary “What the Food,” will share her mission about the importance of real food and nutrition in recovery. Local celebrity radio host and owner of H20 Health, Vickie Johnston, a water expert and innovator will share her expertise on the importance of hydration and clean water and why both are essential

for our health. Goods from the Garden Event Center is owned and operated by Debbie and Richard Maranville who have a passion for real food and will serve up amazing appetizers and a healthy, organic buffet featuring delicious, nutrient-rich food.

The 2019 Prescott Area Artist Studio Tour included 75 juried artists at 51 private studios, and 26 additional artists at 3 Art Centers. The 3-day event was an opportunity for the artists to demonstrate their craft, which included paintings, jewelry, sculptures, pottery and more. Many works of art were raffled off, with the proceeds to fund next year’s Tour as well as children’s art programs in the local area.

The Prescott Chorale: A Symphony of Voices, October 5

Beginning the 2019-2020 Season of the Prescott Chorale, the first performance was A Symphony of Voices, which included Waltzes for Chorale by Brahms and a Symphony of Psalms by Igor Stravinsky. The next performances will be on December 7th, Holiday Magic, to be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, at 2:30 and 7:30 PM.

In this presentation and discussion, Professor Goodwin will look at what has changed and what remains the same since Leopold was in Arizona. My wife, Donna and I are getting ready to list our home. We know we need to de-clutter, which is a big job since we have lived in the house for thirty years. Donna is a “collector” of roosters and has an assortment of about twenty-five (cookie jars, wall hangings, ceramic roosters, tea kettle, etc) and I think she needs to pack most of them away while the house is listed. Donna says this is “ridiculous” and unnecessary. What do you advise?

I love roosters! But mostly in their chicken coop. Yes, Bob, the roosters must “fly the coop” and be stored away while your home is listed. Buyers want to be able to see themselves and their belongings in a house, not yours. We want the buyers to see your kitchen, not the roosters. I hope this doesn’t ruffle Donna’s feathers.

It was a typical downtown Prescott event - filled with local bands, local food, local breweries and family fun! Activities included a mechanical bull, inflatable boxing ring and carnival games. Many joined in the hot dog eating contest, listened to music and enjoyed the beverages from the Street Tavern in the 21 and over area.

Held at Watson Lake, the annual Big Sting Country Music Festival was a benefit for Shadows Foundation, which provides services and financial assistance for those affected by a life-threatening illness. In addition to the musical performers, other activities also took place, such as a Downtown Whiskey Row Treasure Hunt.

This year’s airshow in cooperation with Embry-Riddle and the city of Prescott celebrated the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion and honored our WWII veterans. Aerobatic aircraft were flown by Matt Chapman, Bill Stein, and Rob Holland. Skydiver, Cindy Irish jumped with the U.S. Flag. Mayor Greg Mengarelli, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Chancellor Anette Karisson attended, and highly decorated World War II pilot David Hamilton was honored. A parachute reenactment with C-53 “D-Day Doll” was a highlight. Also depicted was the escorting of a B-17 and a Tuskegee “Red Tail” P-51C.

Veteran’s Day is the day that the community comes out to give their appreciation and respect to our local veterans during the annual downtown parade. The 2019 theme is, “Honoring Korean War Veterans: Never Forget Their Service.”

Did You Know?

The Veteran’s Day Parade was an intimate event, originally held on the grounds of the Bob Stump Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

2010: Mayor Marlin Kuykendall was getting ready to judge the Veteran’s Day Parade, when he suffered a heart attack. The VA sent the Mayor by ambulance to Yavapai Regional Medical Center, where he later had quintuple heart bypass surgery. He made a full recovery, and attended the following year’s Veteran’s Day Parade.

2011: Due to extensive construction around the VA Center, the annual parade was moved to the Embry Riddle campus.

2012: The parade returned to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center for one more year.

2013: The City of Prescott, the VA Medical Center and Embry Riddle joined together to bring the Veterans Day Parade to downtown Prescott. Senator John McCain was in attendance. It has taken place in downtown Prescott ever since.

The Flying High Turkey Drive takes place a few days before Thanksgiving. Just look for Fire Department ladder trucks surrounded by local Chambers of Commerce members and lots of turkeys in the parking lot at Fry’s Grocery Stores. It benefits the Yavapai Food Bank, and ultimately the less fortunate in our community. This year’s event takes place on Monday, November 25.

Prescott is Arizona’s official Christmas City, and the festivities start on Saturday, November 30th. During the day, local mom & pop’s hope you’ll take part in Shop Small: Small Business Saturday. Bundle up that evening and head downtown to enjoy the 24th annual Holiday Light Parade, which launches a month’s worth of Christmas celebrations.

Dec 7 - Prescott Chorale - Holiday Magic at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church - 2:30 PM and 7:30PM - Holiday Magic: Celebrate the season with family and friends. Two concerts - two programs! Last year’s Holiday Concerts sold out, so get your tickets early. The Prescott Chorale celebrates the holiday season with friend and guest artist, Gary Arbuthnot, in a selection of Christmas music for flute and Chorus. Rounding out the program will be Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols, showcasing the magic of voices accompanied by the beauty of the harp.

CHECK THERMOSTAT CALIBRATION: An improperly calibrated thermostat will call for more or less heat than desired, costing money and/or comfort.

CHECK FOR CORRECT AIRFLOW: This is one way to assure maximum efficiency of the heating unit.

CHECK AIR FILTERS: A dirty air filter could cause high energy usage and/or heat exchanger damage.
