EVER WONDER WHAT STANDS BETWEEN 2,000 POUNDS OF SOLID MUSCLE AND A FALLEN BULL RIDER? ONE GUY – THE BULLFIGHTER. Fearless, agile, and adept at reading the bull’s next move, a bullfighter is in the arena before the bull is released from the bucking chute. Once a bull rider has been bucked off or jumped off himself, communication between the bullfighter, the barrelman, and the bull itself is key to protecting the fallen rider. While he’s distracting the bull to get it away from the rider, the bullfighter is also in constant contact with his team to protect the rider as well as each other. Part of rodeos since the 1900’s, the job has evolved from a rodeo clown who entertained fans to a professional athlete, the bullfighter. Later, to recognize the greater danger faced by these athletes, “bullfighter” began to replace the term “rodeo clown.” While comedy is still used as a distraction and to amuse rodeo fans, some of the humor of clown work began to disappear by the late 1970s. Often consisting of a team of two to four athletes, being a bullfighter has become one of the most important jobs at a bull riding event. Although some bullfighters still wear clown makeup, they are mainly seen in brightly colored, loose garments that are designed to tear away easily and distract the bulls, while wearing protective gear underneath.

After a great deal of hard work, he’s now a national champion bullfighter. “I actually wanted to ride bulls,” Beau recalls. “In college, I wanted something to do, so instead of wasting money learning how to ride bulls, I decided to fight them.” At the 2023 Prescott Frontier Days, Inc - World’s Oldest Rodeo, we are celebrating our bullfighters and “Dances with Bulls” will be the rodeo parade theme held on Saturday, July 1, 2023 in downtown Prescott, Arizona. Quirt Hunt, one of Pro Rodeo’s top bullfighters and a performer who values humans’ relationships with animals, will serve as the Grand Marshal for the Rodeo Parade. All of Greater Prescott’s lakes are gems, but Lynx Lake could be the ultimate crowd-pleaser. Found on Walker Road just south of state Route 69 and the border between Prescott and Prescott Valley, it’s the farthest east of the five large manmade lakes in the area, centrally located for Greater Prescott and the closest to Phoenix. It’s the heart of a recreation area that offers just about any category of outdoor fun the Prescott National Forest has on offer: camping in tents and cabins, fishing, boating, canoeing and paddle boarding, swimming, picnicking, even gold panning. And the hiking — there are 14 trails crisscrossing the recreation area, most allowing mountain biking and horseback riding. The lake itself is ringed by a half-paved, half-dirt trail rated as “easy.” The trail along the western shore is paved and wheelchair-accessible, while the eastern shore gets a narrow dirt path with some rocky spots, but most hikers will find it easy to manage. Bikes and horses are not permitted on Lynx Recreational Trail No. 311; the 2.4-mile loop is heavily used by hikers of all

experience levels, drawn by the alpine atmosphere and a path that welcomes anyone interested in working some enjoyable exercise into their day. The trail is excellent for spotting all types of animals, but birdwatchers often get the most action. Bald eagles often reign over the lake in winter, and the west (paved) portion of the trail can be subject to closures between Dec. 1 and June 30 to protect their nesting sites. Ospreys take over in summertime when javelina can be spotted along the shoreline, as well as many small birds including the smallest of all, hummingbirds. The views along this lake are spectacular whichever side you’re on, and every time of the year, the imposing trees mirrored by the water. If you’re lucky enough to catch it in the snow you’ll never forget its beauty. Summertime breezes and shade make it the ideal setting to beat the heat. Bring every generation of your family here to create wonderful shared memories or come by yourself or with a buddy to jog around the shore two or three times — whatever you’re in the mood for, this lake will deliver!

LYNX RECREATION TRAIL NO. 311 The trail begins and ends at the south shore parking lot of the Lynx Lake Recreation Area. Travel east (from Prescott) or west (from Prescott Valley) to Walker Road, then drive 2.6 miles south on Walker to Southshore Drive. The trailhead is about 1/3 mile in on your left, just before you reach the parking lot. It takes about 45 minutes to complete the loop trail, which connects to Johns Tank Trail No. 94 (also for hikers only) and trails Nos. 401-406, which connect the popular campground to the lake. Chino Valley led the region last month with a 450% increase as its months of inventory rose from a miniscule 0.6 months of inventory in February 2023 to 3.3 months of inventory last month. Prescott wasn’t far behind with 3.3 months of inventory recorded, while Dewey Humboldt came in at 2.6 months. Prescott Valley showed only 1.9 months of inventory available at the close of March, due in part to an overall slowdown in new listings for the month. “Inventory levels are still at historic lows,” said Lawrence Yun, chief economist at NAR (National Association of REALTORS®), in a report. “Consequently, multiple offers are returning on a good number of properties.” “Now more than ever, market conditions call for an experienced REALTOR® who has top-of the-line training in contract negotiations and

can do the exhausting work of sifting through incoming offers,” said M. Faye Humphrey, 2023 PAAR President. Although the meteoric rise in home prices of the past few years continues to slow, the age-old concept of supply and demand continues to play a significant role in current conditions. With inventory levels far below what many experts would prefer, purchasing a home will still present its own unique challenges in 2023. “If you see your dream home for sale, call a REALTOR® that knows the local market and start asking questions,” Humphrey stated. “Homeownership is the American dream; it can change lives and create generational wealth. You owe it to yourself to explore every possibility.” While the increase in months of inventory is a positive market indicator, the data on new listings should be followed closely. March recorded an overall drop in new listings of 2.8% since this time last year, with numbers varying by area: Prescott increased its number of new listings by 19.3% since March of 2022, while Chino Valley’s numbers stayed flat. Both Dewey-Humboldt (down 18.8%) and Prescott Valley (down

34.8%) were in the red, which may cause those regions to continue seeing lower inventory numbers in the coming months. If you are tempted to get discouraged, just remember that the positive indicators are there if you know what to look for. Median sales prices continue to climb in our area overall, both since this time last year (+3%) and from month to month (+4.1%), although at much more sustainable levels. Jane Eyre The Yavapai College Performing Arts Department unleashed its bold take on “Jane Eyre: The Musical” over six performances from April 14-23, 2023. Charlotte Bronte’s iconic literary heroine has long been regarded as a martyr but this show celebrates the fire and steel within the character as she remains resilient despite childhood abuse, poverty and heartbreak in 19th century England. Directed by Dean of Performing Arts Dr. Craig J. Ralston, the play remained true to the spirit of the 1847 novel as the cast and crew created a powerful story of a woman fighting for freedom and fulfillment. Performances took place at the newly renamed Jim and Linda Lee Performing Arts Center on campus.

PRESCOTT NOW Rewind

Rent One Stage Family Theatre hosted three performances of the classic Jonathan Larson musical “Rent” April 14-15, the first time the 1995 Broadway production has been staged in Prescott. Based loosely on Puccini’s “La Boheme,” it follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. The Elks Theatre was an impressive setting for the musical as the energetic cast performed “Seasons of Love,” “La Vie Boheme” and dozens of other songs and interludes.
