Country music stars Tracy Lawrence and Clay Walker are coming to the Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott Valley March 18. Both began making it big in their careers in the 1990s, with Lawrence scoring with “Time Marches On” and Walker with “What’s it to You?” They’ve maintained thriving careers since then, with Lawrence releasing his “Hindsight 2020 Vol. 1” album in 2021, the same year as Walker’s “Texas to Tennessee.”

A strong start to the 2023 housing market for the Quad Cities

Despite much different numbers than this time last year the local real estate market is holding steady, according to the housing report released today by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® (PAAR).

The Median Sold Price across all areas was up 1.7% in January, with Prescott Valley recording a 9.3% increase to lead the Quad Cities.

Regions that showed a decline in median sales prices were, thankfully, limited to single digit decreases.

More importantly, Active Inventory increased across all regions last month for an average of 4.4 months across the Quad Cities. Chino Valley topped the list with 5.4 months of inventory, followed by Prescott (5.1 months) and DeweyHumboldt (4.8 months). Prescott Valley

closed out the month of January with only 2.6 months of inventory recorded. Keep in mind that these numbers are still encouraging compared to this time last year, when all four regions were dealing with 30 days or less of active inventory for prospective buyers.

Grand Vistas AT WATSON LAKE & FLUME TRAIL

Watson Lake’s setting in the craggy landscape of the Granite Dells makes it the centerpiece of many a Prescott pictorial, at least since the 1890s.

Like Greater Prescott’s other lakes, it was created by a dam — in this case built across Granite Creek from the depths of Flume Canyon on the southcentral edge of the Dells. Named after an elevated chute built in the early 1900s to water an award-winning peach orchard, the canyon is today served by a network of trails that bring users to the foot of Watson Dam.

These trails begin at the Watson Dam trailhead at 2425 E. Granite Dells Road, about a mile east of State Route 89. Hikers and bikers are greeted by an archway of native trees that gives way quickly to the rocky beginnings.

Towering granite boulders line the canyon, which forms some narrow slots at the beginning as you follow the white dots (compliments of the Prescott Recreation Services Department) over some quite rocky, technical surfaces. Rocks, sometimes with an assist from human-placed stone or wooden stairs, carry you up and down

the early ups and downs.

About a third of a mile in, you reach a fork where the pathway on the right continues as the Watson Dam Trail while the prong on the left becomes the Flume Trail and follows Granite Creek. Several smaller paths, known as the Flume Canyon Trails, connect the Watson Dam and the Flume as they continue south toward the north end of Lake Watson.

The Flume Trail gives you some comparatively easy dirtpath walking in lush riparian areas along the creek before taking you on another climb that includes a pair of short bridges over some remnants of the original flume.

The Watson Dam Trail takes hikers a bit higher and rewards them with some grand vistas of the Dells and Granite Mountain, starting about half a mile from the trailhead and continuing until reaching the Northshore Trail.

If you take a left you can follow the North Shore down to the base of the imposing dam, which has a spillway at the top and a gate farther down that create breathtaking waterfalls when they’re open.

AND FLUME CANYON TRAILS

Taking the Watson Dam, North Shore and Flume trails as a loop spans 1.5 miles with little elevation change, but the route’s combination of rocky and smooth surfaces provides a diverse hiking or biking experience every time. The Flume Canyon trails can be used to either lengthen or shorten your distance.

Bring water with you whatever time of year you go, but you may not need as much in winter, when its mostly unshaded state becomes an advantage instead of a liability. Whenever you go, enjoy the diverse topography, abundant greenery and, if the timing is right, a majestic waterfall.

Rita Rudner broke into standup comedy while the club scene was still hostile towards women and went on to become a regular guest on the Tonight Show and Late Night with David Letterman, later becoming Las Vegas’ longest-running solo female comedy act and selling nearly 2 million tickets. She came to the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center Feb. 19, 2023 for a return engagement of sly observational humor and carefully constructed jokes focused on women, relationships, the pitfalls and pleasures of growing older and her mother-in-law.

NAZ Wranglers Mustang Dance Line Auditions

Twenty dancers showed up Jan. 29, 2023 for the final round of auditions to join the Mustang Dance Line, which cheers on the 2022 Indoor Football League Champion Northern Arizona Wranglers! They were rounded up at the Lessons by Lexe dance studio in Prescott owned by Alexes Niekamp, who also tried out and will again be the Line’s coach this year. 15 dancers eventually made the cut, chosen for their positive presentation, agility with the choreography and enthusiasm. The 14 women and one man, a mix of Mustang veterans and newcomers, will perform at all Wranglers home games at Findlay Toyota Arena in Prescott Valley and appear at community events and activities, including reading to elementary school students in March for National Reading Month.

ASU Symphony Orchestra

Presented by the Yavapai Symphony Association, the Arizona State University Symphony Orchestra returned to Yavapai College Performing Arts Center Feb. 12, 2023 to perform a challenging and diverse program chosen to help emerging professional musicians develop a wide range of skills. The students heralded the beginning of the spring by performing Lili Boulanger’s "D'un matin de printemps" ("Of a Spring Morning") and followed it up with Rimsky Korsakov’s "Capriccio Espagnol," a virtuosic fantasy on Spanish themes. The talented students concluded their concert with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, a powerful contemplation on the inescapable nature of fate. The orchestra provides students with intensive orchestral training and is considered one of the top programs of its kind in the U.S.

PFD Engineer Runs to Bring Awareness to Mental Health

When he stepped on that treadmill Jan. 26, Prescott Fire Department Engineer Jason Heartisan’s purpose was twofold — set a record for the Guinness Book of World Records and raise awareness about mental health in the fire service.

He set out to run 24 hours on a treadmill — blindfolded.

Heartisan completed his running quest, logging 87.65 miles.

His desire was to bring attention and help normalize the mental health support system available within the fire service.

The local fire service community has had several suicides and attempts in the last couple of years. It’s not just a problem in the greater Prescott area; it is nationwide.

Heartisan’s goal was to run for a problem that needs to be solved and for those who have lost their race.

The real goals are to:

• Make sure firefighters know there is a support system.

• Lower the threshold of seeking help.

• Abolish any stigma associated with the mental health support system for firefighters.

Heartisan wanted to run blindfolded so others can “see.” He uses the crowdsourcing website Spotfund (www. spotfund.com/story/26bb2c0839b6-43c3-896b-35bd6febc91f) to raise money to help the fallen; 100% of donations go directly to the honor guard. That is the group that stands watch over the bodies of fallen firefighters before they are laid in their final resting place. Money raised will be used by the Prescott Fire Honor Guard to support their efforts in honoring the flag and honoring those who have fallen.

“Above all, if I manage to bring home a Guinness World Record in the process, I do it for more than myself,” Heartisan said on the website link.

“I do it for anyone who has been impacted by this epidemic. So, I’m not running to break a record. I’m running to break the barriers for us all.”
