Aspen Creek Trail TAKES YOU TO THE TOP OF THE WORLD HIKING
Despite its fairly isolated location southwest of Prescott, Aspen Creek Trail No. 48 is one of the most popular trails for hikers and mountain bikers in Prescott National Forest. It’s easy to figure out why.
It begins by following a short section of Aspen Creek and climbing up the base of Mt. Francis through impressive stands of ponderosa and Gambel oak, the latter of which provides a healthy amount of fall foliage for those who come to this year-round trail at the right time. There are no aspens to be found, unfortunately.
The first mile of the trail is spent climbing up and over a ridge. A great cardio and core workout whether you’re on foot or wheels. Horses are permitted, too, so this is great exercise for them. Their riders also benefit from a full core workout and improved posture.
The Moby Trail (No. 737) branches off to the west almost a mile away from the trailhead, taking you on a parallel, higher-elevation track that offers the tradeoff of less vegetation for more expansive vistas of the surrounding wilderness.
At the 1-mile mark of the Aspen Creek Trail you reach gentler, more rolling terrain, from which you can
enjoy panoramic views of numerous peaks including Spruce Mountain, Mount Union and on clear days the San Francisco Peaks beyond Flagstaff.
The trail begins a slow descent toward the base of the mountain as the vegetation begins to switch over to juniper and manzanita. After another mile or so you’re rewarded with panoramic views to the south, including the burg of Wilhoit and the Board Creek Divide.
The trail ends by meeting the East Copper Trail (No. 260), which permits OHVs but is considerably less busy than Aspen Creek. You can head farther south or double back to reach the 7,100-foot peak of Mount Francis, site of several radio towers. Or you can go back the way you came, reversing the spectacular progression you just witnessed.
As mentioned, this trail can get quite busy, to the point of warranting a “high use trail” sign at the trailhead warning “serious accidents” have resulted from the steep slope and tight curves. These conditions mostly exist on the first mile, so users need to be on alert throughout this segment. It can be much quieter in the middle of the week, but with a little common sense you should be fine, whichever day you choose for your trek.
The Aspen Creek Trail in Prescott National Forest surrounds you with pine trees and fresh air mere steps from the trailhead.

Reached from Aspen Creek Trailhead, which is about 15 minutes away from downtown Prescott via Montezuma Street/White Spar Road. Take a right onto Copper Basin Road and follow it past the end of the pavement (the last 1.5 miles is OK for most vehicles) until you see the trailhead parking lot on your right. Trail No. 393 toward Thumb Butte starts from the parking lot; find the trailhead for No. 48 directly across the road.

In addition to telescopes, Wi-Fi hotspots, iPads, Chromebooks, and hiking kits (complete with pack, trekking poles, binoculars, and more), the Library of Things now also includes EnChroma Colorblind glasses.
Color blindness affects one in 12 men (8%) and one in 200 women (.5%) – an estimated 13 million in the US and 350 million worldwide. Though not a complete correction for colorblindness, Enchroma glasses enable most people with red-green colorblindness to see an expanded range of vibrant color and enjoy enhanced detail and depth perception. These glasses are available with lenses for either indoor or outdoor viewing, include sizes for adults and youth, and select adult pairs are designed to be worn over the top of prescription glasses. EnChroma Colorblind Glasses are available thanks to an initiative by the City of Prescott Office of Tourism and have a 3-day lending period.
Enchroma glasses are not the only new addition to the Library of Things. Prescott Public Library, in partnership with Prescott Ukulele Guild, Friends of Prescott Public Library, and with support from Gray Dog Music, has added a number of ukuleles for check out. These ukuleles check out for 3 weeks and include a ukulele, carrying case, and an electronic tuner.

RWOP Celebrates 80th Anniversary

The Eagles Nest at Prescott Resort was packed with Republican Women of Prescott (RWOP) members, guests and community leaders for the October celebration of their 80th anniversary.
Founded in 1942 by Dora Heap, RWOP currently boasts of 1,000plus members and is the largest Republican Federated Women’s Club in the nation.
Joan Bigley, 97 years young, was the oldest RWOP member attending, and she charmed the guests with her stories of RWOP many years ago. Another event highlight was a tribute to Sen. Karen Fann, who retired at the end of 2022.
Fann has been a faithful member of RWOP for nearly a decade. During her term of office, she has been praised over and over for her many personal accomplishments as our long-time representative. She is a
great mentor, adviser and is very accessible to her constituents.
Among her great attributes are her devotion to her rural community roots, always fighting to protect our rural way of life and her unwavering allegiance to the Republican Women of Prescott and the Republican Party.
Decorations of red, white and blue balloons and flowers complemented the Eagles Nest décor for the anniversary. The RWOP singers entertained the attendees while Reva Fredericks played background piano for the event.
Nine former RWOP presidents were honored with rose corsages. Memorabilia from past years was on display throughout the room including scrapbooks, awards, trophies and poster boards mounted with published articles.

Sales may be slow but equity remains strong
Total sales across most of the Quad Cities decreased in the month of November, but median sold prices continue to paint a positive picture of local real estate according to the housing market report released today by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® (PAAR).
Total sales in November dropped across the entire region by 35.8%, but median sold prices stayed in the green with a 2.3% overall increase. Once again, Prescott posted the most impressive numbers with a 14.3% increase in median sales price, with Dewey-Humboldt following closely at 10.1%. In contrast, total sales in Prescott fell by 38.3% in November and 70.5% in Dewey-Humboldt.
Chino Valley was the only region to record an increase in total sales in November of 16.1%, although median sales price in that area fell by 7.2%.
Prescott Valley reported decreases in both categories last month, with total sales down 31.3% and median sales prices
down 7.4%, the lowest of all the regions.
The market snapshot of November, however, should be considered alongside the market’s year-to-date performance, which shows that median sales prices are continuing to rise since the beginning of the year and are still well ahead of the data from 2021.
“Despite the drop off in sales, which to some degree is normal this time of year, inventory, for now, remains in seller’s market territory and is helping to keep prices strong, even with the high interest rates,” said George Beitzel, 2022 PAAR President. The drop in sales this time of year can be attributed to common factors such as potential buyers diverting finances to enjoy the holidays, or families with school-aged children preferring a summer move.
As the housing market continues to stabilize, historical perspective is key. As new listings and months of inventory continue to increase (an average of 16% and 3.7 months,
respectively, across all regions), buyers may see more competitive prices and “move in ready” listings as sellers respond to market fluctuations.

Open Barrel 4-D Race and Poles
Horses with Heart, a nonprofit that lets disabled children and adults gain confidence, dignity and independence through riding horses under the supervision of highly trained staff, held one of its biggest fundraisers Nov. 19, 2022 at Olsen’s Grain Arena in Chino Valley. This year’s Open Barrel and 4-D Race attracted a record-breaking 85 riders for the 4-D barrel race, 33 youth barrel riders, 19 energetic Peewee competitors and 46 overall competitors for the pole races. The winners of a brand-new saddle for having the “Most Heart” and the fastest combined time in barrel racing and poles were Chino Valley’s Melanie Pritchard and her horse Brother. Money was also raised through sponsorships and a silent auction.

MLK Day Event
The annual Prescott Martin Luther King Peace and Justice March and Celebration will be Monday, Jan. 16. This year, the theme is Love in Motion, reflecting Dr. King’s ambition to use the power of love to keep moving forward toward the goal of greater social justice.
Marchers will assemble at 10 a.m. at the Prescott College Welcome Center and march around the Courthouse Square, with the march concluding at the Prescott United Methodist Church on Gurley St.
A program of speakers, music and celebration will follow at the church at 11 a.m. Area youth will be included in the program, and the event will include an onstage panel discussion with middle school students from Northpoint Academy.
Afterward, two break-out sessions will be offered where attendees can meet keynote speaker Charlotte Strayhorne and Spoken Word speaker Truth B. Told to discuss MLK’s legacy.
Attendees also can sign up for several service projects being organized by Arizona Serve.

HOW TO SET SMART Resolutions
One of the best ways you can make your New Year’s resolutions more than a brief flirtation with change is to follow the “SMART” acronym for setting goals. It’s been around for decades so you’ve probably encountered it at school, work or some other setting, and it provides a great structure for setting and keeping your resolutions and other goals.
To review, SMART stands for:
• Specific — You can’t be vague about what you want to do. Write out your goals and attach numbers to them. This is easiest to do with health, nutritional or fitness-based resolutions like losing 20 pounds or running a 7-minute mile, but it can also be applied to financial or selfcare situations.
• Measurable — This works hand-in-glove with the specificity of your resolution. If you’re going for that 7-minute mile, you’re either hitting it or you’re not, and you’re able to measure your progress if, for example, you’re already running a mile in 9 minutes and training to shave a couple minutes off.
• Attainable — If you weigh 135 pounds and want to get down to 115, losing that percentage of your body volume is going to be more difficult than reaching a goal of 125 pounds. If it takes everything you’ve got to run a mile in 14 minutes, then shaving it down to 12 minutes is more attainable than trying to get it down to 7.
• Relevant — Choose a resolution that has a deeper meaning for you or would improve your life. If you want to lose weight, choose an amount that would help you reach broader health goals. If you’re quitting smoking or cutting back on alcohol, keep the reasons you want to do it at the front of your mind.
• Time-bound — Set a realistic, but not too generous, time frame for resolving your resolution. You don’t have to take a year to accomplish it, and in most cases that would be too long. Losing 20 pounds at a sustainable rate of 1 to 2 pounds a week should take between 2 ½ to four months.

Flying High Turkey Drive
The Prescott Valley Chamber of Commerce held its annual Thanksgiving drive to collect turkeys, other Thanksgivingrelated items and other contributions for the Yavapai County Food Bank. A total of 1,645 turkeys were collected either before or during the main event Nov. 21, 2022, in the Fry’s Food & Drug parking lot. Numerous sponsors and volunteers made it possible, with Desert Financial Credit Union donating $12,500 in matching funds for donations received before the event. Meeting the goal meant Chamber CEO Marnie Uhl got to soar 101 feet above a Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority (CAFMA) bucket truck!

THE 10 GOLDEN RULES OF TRAVEL

My rules for the road to provide you a good, safe and enjoyable trip.
1. Pack lightly, make smart choices. Take items that serve dual purposes and clothing that will wash/dry quickly.
2. Take potential travel companions out for a test run. I never take a trip with anyone who I haven’t vetted on at least an overnighter that includes public transportation, restaurant dining and early morning meetup times.
3. Do research before you leave. Why does this area call you to visit? If you are going to Milan to see “The Last Supper,” research will help you avoid disappointment when you discover you should have purchased a ticket months beforehand.
4. Don’t become totally reliant on artificial intelligence or a travel companion’s notes regarding flight dates and times. Check details yourself.
5. Take precautions to stay healthy. This starts with hydration before, during and after boarding. A refillable water container if you’re going to a foreign country will hold you long enough to find bottled water.
6. Avoid new shoes. Wear shoes you can slip off and on easily, both for airport security and comfort walking through museums, wandering city streets or running to catch the train.
7. Use your debit card for currency exchange; get your cash at an ATM. Get money daily or every other day so you carry small amounts of currency at a time in case you are the victim of theft.
8. When you arrive, eat a small, light snack. If you can check in, take a shower and set the clock for a twohour nap only.
9. If you are in a big city, walk if it’s safe. Happy surprises that you would never find riding in a cab will be the
stuff of stories when you get home. And, don’t make assumptions about people. Smile, ask questions; say hello and thank you.
10. Finally, to make packing and enjoying the trip your primary responsibility, call a travel agent to pull the rest of the details together. Travel agents don’t charge for most of their services and will be able to source deals you won’t likely on your own. And, any travel agent worth their hand sanitizer will advise you to purchase travel insurance.
