About the Cover

The Cowboy Poets Gathering is rounding up a great bunch of 40 singers, poets and storytellers for its annual event Aug. 10-12. Many have been part of the show at some point over the last 35 years and some exciting newcomers have been added. They'll perform in several venues on the Yavapai College Campus over two days and three nights, bringing their cowboy poetry and music to share their heritage and the culture of the American cowboy.

at Granite M ountain HIKE INTO THE WILD

Granite Mountain’s 7,625-foot peak has stood sentry over Greater Prescott for millennia as the tallest mountain on the horizon and temptation to the brave and foolhardy. Once known as Mount Gurley, and before that as Wi:kvte:wa to the Yavapai, it’s a magnificent jumble of boulders miniscule to enormous.

It’s also surrounded by the Granite Mountain Wilderness, which has additional protections than the rest of Prescott National Forest — all motorized vehicles and bicycles are prohibited. It is a refuge for deer, javelina, foxes, lizards, snakes, birds and natureattached humans, most of whom treat the 9,700-acre refuge with the care that’s called for.

There are no official trails that go all the way to Granite Mountain’s peak, but the U.S. Forest Service’s Granite Mountain Trail No. 261 comes closest, curling around the top to a grand vista 500 feet below it with sweeping views all the way to Sedona and the San Francisco Peaks on clear days.

You get to enjoy so much more on the way up, too. When you start out from the Metate Trailhead next to Granite Basin Lake you have plenty of shade

from ponderosas, cottonwoods, alligator juniper and many more species, as well as the first views of the mountain’s granite ledges.

Soon the trail crosses the boundary of the Granite Mountain Wilderness and dips down into a wash, then climbs back out and keeps climbing. You will pass one huge pile of boulders as you leave the forest and enter the open chaparral with shrubbier mesquite and manzanita trees as a series of switchbacks begins, boulders helping to mark the trail and guide the users.

At Blair Saddle about threequarters of the way up, there’s a three-prong ed fork. To the left is Little Granite Mountain Trail No. 37, which loops back to the south around the peak of the same name. Straight ahead is White Rock Spring Trail No. 39, part of a wider loop back to the trailhead.

Keep right to continue on No. 261, with the incline continuing as it winds back through more ponderosas to its end at breathtaking Vista Point. This calorie-torching workout takes an average of two hours, and you can choose to take one of the other trails back or return the way you came.

To reach the trailhead take Iron Springs Road from its intersection with Willow Creek, Whipple and Miller Valley roads in Prescott northwest to Granite Basin Road. Turn right onto Granite Basin Road, continue for another 3.5 miles to the Metate parking lot on the right where there are 20 parking spaces.

Most of the trail is within the Granite Mountain Wilderness, where no motorized or mechanized equipment is allowed, including bicycles. Hiking groups are limited to 15 people and equestrian groups to 10 animals. Dogs are allowed but must be leashed at all times.

All She Wrote: We are a rock band with roots in blues and honkytonk. That’s the best way we’ve found to describe what we do. If you come to one of our shows, expect some hard driving rock and roll.

Prescott Now: What is the key to being a successful musical act in Prescott and Northern Arizona?

All She Wrote: Stay humble and bring energy to the stage every night. Also, play an old country song every once in a while.

Prescott Now: What’s the smallest audience you’ve played for; the biggest?

All She Wrote: We've been pretty lucky so far and have had good crowds, but being long-time musicians, we have all played those shows where it’s just you and the bartender.

We are really hoping to play some festivals now that we are becoming more established. This year has just been about getting tight as a band and trying to develop a following.

World’s Oldest Rodeo®

The 136th edition of the World’s Oldest Rodeo®, sponsored by Prescott Frontier Days®, carried on Prescott’s most hallowed tradition from June 28-July 4, drawing 671 contestants and thousands of spectators from around the country and issuing a total payout of more than $348,000. Twenty-year-old Trevor Hale of Perryton, Texas, was named the All-Around Cowboy after eight heart-pounding performances pitted some of the world’s top cowboys and cowgirls against each other. Festivities at the rodeo included mutton bustin’, live music, food and vendors, with other Rodeo Week staples like the Rodeo Parade, Downtown Rodeo Experience, Prescott Rodeo Days Arts and Crafts Show, Cowboy Church and rodeo dances all coming off without a hitch!

Prescott’s Great Fire of 1900 has been written about many times. However, recent research has not only revealed certain findings never before known to the general public, but also errors in the standard telling of the subject.

This one-man play features Wyatt Earp (great grand-nephew of Wyatt Earp) as Doc Holliday.

Earp tells the story of the West’s most famous dentist and his journey from one who heals to one who kills. The setting is in a Denver, Colorado jail cell, where Bat Masterson and Governor Frederick W. Pitkin have put Doc in protective custody for a few hours. This is after Doc and the Earps have left Arizona for Colorado. Unfortunately for Doc, a few hours have turned into a few days. To say the least, Doc is not very happy about this. He is angry with the jailor, who is ignoring his needs. Out of boredom and frustration, Doc begins bantering with the other prisoners. You, the audience are the other prisoners.

Prescott Jazz Summit set for Aug. 25-27

We are celebrating our 22nd year this year presenting musicians from throughout the U.S., Arizona and our own Greater Prescott area.

Friday’s 7 p.m. "Jazz Goes to Broadway" concert will be at the Elks Theater.

Saturday’s 7 p.m. Big Band concert will be at Ruth Street Theater at Prescott High School. There also will be free workshops open to all ages 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the school.

On Sunday there will be a morning jazz brunch concert 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM and an afternoon jazz concert 2:00 to 4:00 PM, both at the Hassayampa Inn. There will be a jam session at Murphy’s Restaurant at 6:30 PM.

Many of these musicians have performed with the biggest stars in the entertainment business, such as Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, The Blues Brothers, The David Letterman Show, June Christy, Anita O’Day, Toni Tennille, Cab Calloway, Joe Williams,

and the big bands of Glenn Miller, Harry James, Jimmy Dorsey, Woody Herman, and Stan Kenton.

The Jazz Summit is very involved with music education and has sponsored musicians to perform and do workshops in schools all over Arizona. We have reached more than 4,000 students over the years.

We also give scholarships for deserving students to attend summer music camps and have donated funds to many school music departments.

Our goal is to present enjoyable music in a relaxed atmosphere. One of the favorite aspects for our audiences is the interplay between the audience members and the musicians.

A Promising Sign for Quad Cities Real Estate

Increasing inventory continued to positively impact overall home sales from May to June, according to the housing report released by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® (PAAR).

The highlight of June’s data is the rise in total sales in Prescott, a 4% increase from May to June and the first positive gain of the year in this category.

Another bright spot is that the rate of home sales is clearly picking up with only a 4.8% dip in June compared to a 13.9% dip in May. This 9.1% increase in the total sales rate of 9.1%. corresponds to an increase in total homes sold from 346 in May to 375 in June.

The median sold price for June began to rise throughout the Quad Cities, showing a 3.5% increase. Dewey-Humboldt led the category with an 8.1% increase, while smaller but still significant increases in median sold price can be seen in Prescott

(4.8%) and Prescott Valley (4.4%).

Months of inventory continued to rise throughout the Quad Cities and surrounding areas with a month-overmonth increase of 23.1%, reflecting a change from 2.6 months of inventory in June of 2022 to 3.6 months of inventory for the same time this year.

In a June press release from the National Association of REALTORS®, NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun said, “Despite sluggish pending contract signings, the housing market is resilient with approximately three offers for each listing.” Yun added, “The lack of housing inventory continues to prevent housing demand from being fully realized.”

Historically, six months of supply is associated with moderate price appreciation.

In the Quad Cities, a decline in new listings across all regions is becoming a key

area of focus to bring context to discussions regarding current market conditions.

“Market logic dictates that fewer listings equals fewer sales,” said M. Faye Humphrey, 2023 PAAR President. “A shortage of inventory is still a factor, both nationally and here at home, but we hope to see this ease as we enter the fall season,” Humphrey said.

Trek for the Teens in your life

Yavapai County residents looking to improve local teens’ access to healthy outdoor activities while also enjoying the splendor of our state’s largest national park should consider participating in this year’s Trek for Teens hike across the Grand Canyon.

The Launch Pad’s sixth annual Trek for Teens fundraiser hike will take place Oct. 6 to Oct. 7. Participants can sign up for either day; each will be dedicated to one 25-mile rim-to-rim hike across the canyon.

Those hoping for a more intense experience are invited to apply for the chance to participate in both days, hiking rim-to-rim-to-rim — or R3, as we call it.

This year, participants are required to register as teams of two or more people, for both safety and moral support. Each team needs a name and must designate a team captain, who will serve as a mentor for their teammates.

Those hoping to participate, but who have trouble gathering teammates, can reach out to The Launch Pad and we will help connect you with a team.

Each team member is required to raise at least $1,000 through peer-to-peer fundraising prior to the event. The top team and individual fundraisers will be rewarded with various fitness and outdoor recreation gear prizes.

The funds raised through Trek for Teens go toward helping lowincome youth participate in The Launch Pad’s numerous outdoor programs, including our weekly outdoor adventure, our fall and spring break adventure trips, Adventure Camp in June — as well as paying for the equipment necessary for these programs.

Not only will your fundraising support Prescott teens’ mental and physical well-being, but your hard work and dedication while hiking the canyon will model healthy living habits and perseverance for the youth in your life.

Granite Mountain Hotshots Remembrance Event

Founding Fathers Collective held a remembrance event and concert June 30 to honor the 10th anniversary of the loss of the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots who were lost while fighting the Yarnell Hill Fire south of Prescott.

Activities like food trucks, beer gardens and inflatable play spaces spilled onto Granite Street downtown and country singer Ryan Weaver delivered a rocking yet poignant set of original songs. All proceeds were donated to the 100 Club of Arizona, whose mission is to "provide immediate financial assistance to families of public safety officers and firefighters who are seriously injured or killed in the line of duty, and provide resources to enhance their safety and welfare."
