Trifecta THE LAKE
The warm rays of sunshine. The sugar-sand beach. The gentle loll of the crystal-blue waves of Geneva Lake lapping at your ankles. This is summer. Whether you’re a beach bum, a watersports adrenaline seeker or just dipping your toes in the water, you can find your beach niche here.
Although life here may seem to revolve around Geneva Lake, it isn’t the only fish in the sea in the area. (While some may use “Lake Geneva” interchangeably for the lake and the city, the body of water is actually named Geneva Lake.) In the region, you can find a trio of distinct lakes, including Geneva Lake, Delavan Lake and Lake Como, for three times the fun and options.
GENEVA LAKE
Geneva Lake is a true treasure, with aquamarine waters stretching across 8 square miles just waiting to be explored. The 21-mile shoreline is dotted with charming towns and villages like Fontana, Williams Bay and Linn, each adding to the area’s allure.
A lovely public path encircles the entire lake, inviting visitors to stroll past stunning estates, many of which were built by affluent Chicagoans seeking summer escapes after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. As you meander through this picturesque landscape, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of historic mansions, beautifully manicured gardens and, of course, sparkling water in every direction.

Activities Aplenty HISTORY UNDERFOOT &
It’s not often that you get to retrace the path of an indigenous Potawatomi tribe from centuries ago, but that’s exactly what visitors who venture along the infamous Geneva Lake Shore Path are doing. Originally used to circumnavigate the lake by the native people, today the shore path is a 21-mile trail exposing walkers and hikers to the multitude of historic homes and estates hugging the shore of this sapphire lake.
The Geneva Lake Shore Path is teeming with history, including mansions that date back to the turn of the early 20th century. Bring along a book on the history of Lake Geneva to see if you can identify some of the original homes gracing the lake, including Glen Annie, Stone Manor, Blacktoft, Hazeldore and Casa del Sueño. Read about the historic families that resided in these homes and helped put Lake Geneva on the map.
TRAIL ACCESS POINTS
You are welcome to hike the entire length of the Geneva Lake Shore Path or pick up the trail at certain designated spots. There are basically seven key access points. The most popular one is near the Lake Geneva Public Library, close to Riviera Beach, but other access points include Chapin Road, Williams Bay, Fontana, Shadow Lane, Linn Road and Big Foot Beach State Park. Check out the Geneva Lake Shore Path map on Pages 20 and 21 to chart your course.
A LIVING HISTORY
As you traverse the living history of the shore path, imagine the indigenous tribes traveling the same path and what it may have looked like hundreds of years ago. Remember that several Native American tribes traveled the path from 2500 B.C. to 1836 A.D., with the Potawatomi tribe being the most recent, to use the path for hunting and fishing. They placed canoes along the path to get to the lakeside villages that are now Fontana, Williams Bay and Lake Geneva.
Then, after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, many Chicagoans rediscovered the beauty of Geneva Lake as they traveled north from the big city. As a result, workmen used the shore path to travel to and from the summer estates that they were building along the lake for some of the region’s wealthiest families in the late 1800s.
Some of the properties are just as opulent as thier owners’ luxurious Chicago counterparts and can still be found along the shore path today, creating a surprising legacy and spurring the establishment of Lake Geneva as we know it today.
Stone Manor
LAKESHORE ENDEAVORS ALONG THE PATH
Meandering along the entire shoreline, the single-track footpath reveals stunning homes, expansive estates, colorful gardens, beautiful bridges and panoramic lake views that encircle the water.
And because the homeowners along the lake are responsible for the maintenance of the portion of the shore path that goes through their property, visitors will be delighted at the unique personal elements that add to the trail’s magic, including artwork, water stations, benches and other delightful gems.
Big Foot Beach State Park is the ideal rest stop for hikers, and offers ample opportunities to enjoy a picnic, swim, fish and relax on a warm summer day. The park also offers wooded campsites and additional hiking trails for those who may want to make this their overnight destination and complete the shore path the following day.
Another popular place to take a break and enjoy a tour is at the historic Yerkes Observatory. Science giants including Albert Einstein, Edwin Hubble, Nancy Grace Roman and Carl Sagan have walked the hallowed halls of this 1897 architectural wonder, and ascended the stairs to the giant domes where the telescopes are housed. Now you can enjoy special stargazing events throughout the year with opportunities to explore the night sky and ponder the cosmos.
Fontana, a quaint village along the shore path, is a fun place to grab a bite to eat or wander the shops gracing the area.
PRO TIPS
The Geneva Lake Shore Path is as diverse as the people who walk it, so be prepared for a variety of terrain, including hills, stone paths, twists and turns, wooded areas, brick walls, wooden steps and uneven ground.
Pick up a copy of the official Geneva Lake Shore Path Guide, a handy pocket-size guide detailing over 100 homes and points of interest on the path. Purchase one at the VISIT Lake Geneva Visitor Information Center (201 Wrigley Dr.) or online by scanning the code.
The three most important tips to remember are to: wear comfortable shoes, take a map with you and bring plenty of water.
Because of the length of the trail, hiking it by section is recommended, but if you choose to walk the entire shore path in one day, expect it to take between eight to 10 hours because of the variety of terrain.
For those looking to get a taste of the shore path without going the extra miles, the easiest place to start is at the Lake Geneva Public Library in downtown Lake Geneva. Then head out in either direction.
Remember to stay on the path as venturing onto private property along the shore path is prohibited, as is the use of bicycles, skates, skateboards and motorized vehicles.

INSIDER TIP
Lake Geneva Cruise Line has an intriguing option for those looking to walk a portion of the shore path and enjoy a leisurely boat ride back to your starting point. You’ll hike the approximately 7-mile segment of path from Lake Geneva to Williams Bay and then board a boat for the return trip back to Lake Geneva. Or do it in reverse — boat from Lake Geneva to Williams Bay, then walk back. Reservations are required at cruiselakegeneva.com. Allow between three and three and a half hours for the walk, and 45 minutes for the boat ride.
Geneva Lake
SHORE PATH
TheGeneva Lake Shore Path is a 21.9-mile Native American footpath that encircles the entirety of the lake. It was formed by the Potawatomi people who lived here during the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, the path remains open to the public, meandering along the lakeshore, crossing the front lawns of historic estates, marinas, beaches and public parks. See Pages 16 through 18 for some Geneva Lake Shore Path tips.
4. SCHWINN
ESTATE
In 1922, Ignaz Schwinn, founder of the famous Schwinn bicycle company, built a Victorian summer home on a hill overlooking the lake. Members of the Schwinn family owned the estate for four generations. Today, a 7,500-square-foot French chateau sits where the Victorian home once was.
5. CONGRESS CLUB
Chicago families looking for a summer retreat established the Congress Club in 1882. Along with the charming lakeside cottages, a large clubhouse was originally located in the center of the grounds for communal meals. The exterior of the homes remain essentially unchanged from the 19th century.
6. YERKES OBSERVATORY
Built in 1897 and home to the world’s largest refracting telescope, Yerkes’ iconic dome can be seen high above the treetops. It was one of two places Albert Einstein asked to visit on his 1921 tour of America. Today, Yerkes is open to the public for tours and special events.
7. HAZELDORE
One of the truly original and un-updated homes still standing, Hazeldore was built in the 1890s and is actually three buildings under one roof, connected by a veranda around the main house. The interior features ornate, handcarved woodwork and a fireplace designed to resemble a ship’s prow.
3. ALTA VISTA
The original mansion known as Alta Vista was destroyed by fire in 1919, but its owner, industrialist William Nelson Pelouze, replaced it with a Howard Van Doren Shawdesigned Italian Renaissance home. A massive, stonecarved mantel was deemed too large for the new space and subsequently donated to The Art Institute of Chicago. C

8. BLACK POINT ESTATE
Just visible above the trees, Black Point Estate was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994 and is open for public tours accessible only by boat. The home was commissioned by beer baron Conrad Seipp in 1888 as a summer cottage and enjoyed by four generations of Seipp descendants.
9. ALOHA LODGE
Built for hotel tycoon Tracy Drake in 1901, Aloha Lodge was named by the Drake family upon returning from a trip to Hawaii, where they befriended the deposed Hawaiian Queen Lili’uokalani. The home has undergone significant enhancements since 2009, substantially increasing in size.
2. NORTHWOODSIDE
1. LAKE GENEVA PUBLIC LIBRARY
Built in 1954 and designed by the late James R. Dresser, a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright, this prairie-style building offers some of the best views of the lake. This is a good public access point to begin your Geneva Lake Shore Path walk, heading west past the library and public boat slips.
This home was originally built in 1876 for Henry Strong, a doctor, lawyer and railroad developer who often serenaded his neighbors by playing an immense pipe organ he kept in a separate lakeside cottage. Along with neighboring properties, Northwoodside was once owned by members of Chicago’s Wrigley family of chewing gum and baseball fame.

Built in 1896 for a Chicago lumber dealer, Oak Lodge was expanded significantly in the early 1900s and later owned by Daniel S. Peterkin, Sr., president of Morton Salt. The home underwent a historic reconstruction, closely following its original plans, in 2008.

Geneva Lake
Delavan Lake
Repeat EAT. FISH. SLEEP.
When it comes to freshwater fishing, the Lake Geneva region is a variety pack. You can troll for largemouth bass and brown trout in Geneva Lake, or catch trout, panfish, walleye and bass in one of our nearby streams and lakes. In fact, the area is becoming a go-to fishing destination for the traveling angler.
Geneva Lake is teeming with smallmouth bass, which are often found along the lake’s many weed beds and rocky outcrops. In deeper waters, anglers will be pleased to discover walleye taking the bait during the warmer summer evenings. From boat fishing to shore fishing, Geneva Lake’s 5,400 acres, with a maximum water depth of 135 feet, means visitors have ample chances to catch the big one.
About 10 miles northwest of Lake Geneva, Delavan Lake is home to a variety of fish, too, including panfish, largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye and northern pike. In addition to many parks along its shores, the lake boasts a series of fishing piers, boat launches and boat rental outlets where you can put a line in the water.
For a smaller, lower depth lake experience, head to Lake Como, where largemouth bass and other freshwater fish, including northern pike, bluegill and catfish, are abundant. With a maximum depth of only 9 feet, this lake offers approximately 955 acres of water to explore and is only 4 miles from Lake Geneva. Plenty of boat landings dot the lakeshore for easy access to the lake.
KIDS CAN CAST A LINE, TOO
There’s something heartwarming about seeing children feel that first tug on their fishing line and the excitement of possibly pulling in their first catch. At Helen Rohner Children’s Fishing Park, children can dig for worms and cast their line at fishing spots along Southwick Creek, while exploring the natural environs of the 5-acre park. Children who are new to fishing can enjoy fishing classes at the Williams Bay Municipal Pier. Others can explore a butterfly garden, nature trail and observation beehive.
Those adventurers who would like to explore the area lakes with someone well-versed in the best fishing spots can check out Lake Geneva Fishing Guide, which furnishes all the rods, reels and tackle for your freshwater fishing experience.
In the Flow Fly Fishing Guide Service is a great option specifically for fly fishing aficionados. Anglers can additionally find a variety of bait and lures at Geneva Lake Bait & Tackle in Williams Bay.
Fresh Air A BREATH OF
LakeGeneva is known for its great restaurants, shopping and watersports, but for those of you looking for a more tranquil experience, check out one of our nature preserves, trails or parks to recharge your batteries and feel more connected to nature.
There are countless ways to enjoy all that nature has to offer here in the Lake Geneva area. From the Potawatomi origin, the word “Kishwauketoe” means “Clear Water” or “Lake of the Sparkling Water,” so the Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy is aptly named. The property, which is sustained and protected completely by volunteers, features 65 acres of prairie land. Within the park are 4 miles of hiking and walking trails, all of which are regularly cleared and maintained, as well as a 15-acre arboretum near the Harris Road entrance. Explore its trails by cross-country skiing or snowshoeing in the winter months.
Open 365 days per year, Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy often treats onlookers to views of boldly colored flowers, brilliant sunrises and sunsets over Geneva Lake, colors that change with the seasons, and many species of native flora and fauna.
Much like Kishwauketoe, the Mary Koutsky Four Seasons Nature Preserve features low-impact hiking and the chance to get outside. With hiking trails, a pond, a shelter, an observation tower and a dog park near the entrance, nature-lovers of all ages can find something to love here. Kids and the young at heart will especially enjoy the Storybook Trail, a fun and educational experience for children by children!
Located just around the bend in the town of Linn, and open from dawn until dusk 365 days a year, Linn Nature Park includes hiking trails, a pavilion, silos and more than 150 acres of rolling land. The landscape boasts wetlands, savannah and grasslands, each of which are home to hundreds of plants, flowers and animals, including Henslow’s and grasshopper sparrows, bobolink and the eastern meadowlark. Hiking and horseback riding offer educational and recreational opportunities in this protected grassland habitat as well.
Walworth County’s largest park, White River County Park, offers nearly 200 acres of land to explore! Located just 5 miles from downtown Lake Geneva, the park boasts 2 miles of waterfront access along the White River. Both kayaking and canoeing are encouraged, and visitors can easily launch boats via access ramps to the river. Fishing, picnicking and hiking are also options, as the park includes several miles of trails that are accessible year-round. Seasonal hunting and trapping are allowed, though the proper permits are required.
The White River Trail is long enough to span more than one town in this part of southeastern Wisconsin. The trail is made up of two segments: a 12-mile stretch between Elkhorn and just west of Burlington, and a 7-mile section that runs from unincorporated
Kansasville (near Eagle Lake) to downtown Burlington in Racine County.
The easy trail is level-grounded and accessible at a number of points, and includes a number of scenic railroad bridges and trestles. In the winter, the trails are open to snowmobiles, while biking, hiking and horseback riding (from Lyons to Springfield) are available throughout the year.
Located along the shores of Geneva Lake, directly across the street from Buttons Bay, Big Foot Beach State Park is a great place to take a break from hiking its 5 miles of trails, boating or swimming to grill up a casual lunch or enjoy some beach time.
The park has 100 wooded campsites (with firewood for purchase), showers, toilets, firepit rings and a playground area for the kids. A sandy beach with access to a shallow, crystal-clear lake is across the street. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are popular once the weather shifts, and the swimming and sandy beach are no longer options! Visit wiparks.net to reserve a campsite or find more information.
So grab a friend, or maybe even just a pair of binoculars and a bird-watching guide, and check out all that nature has to offer here in the greater Lake Geneva area!

It’s the perfect destination to kick off your Lake Geneva experience any time of the year, whether it’s a family vacation, a getaway with friends or a relaxing couple’s retreat. We’ve curated a sampling of some of our visitors’ favorite places to shop, dine and explore to help you plan your next visit.
A SHOPPING LIST FOR YOUR SHOPPING LIST
There is no shortage of shopping downtown. You’ll find everything from contemporary fashion and sports equipment to gifts and home furnishings. Don Vito’s Infused Olive Oil Emporium also brings fine culinary delights, such as premium infused olive oils and aged balsamic vinegars, to your table.
Outdoor enthusiasts must visit Clear Water Outdoor, where adventure awaits, and you can find outdoor clothing and gear, and cross-country ski, snowshoe, kayak and standup paddleboard rentals. The Market of Lake Geneva , home of many unique boutiques in an indoor courtyard, is a
gathering place for local artisans and merchants. Don’t leave without a honey tasting at Queen Bee Artisan Market It’s like a wine tasting, but sweeter.

FINDING
THE FINEST
Local Flavors
Freshingredients. Fresh dining. Lake Geneva offers everything for food lovers desiring fresh, locally sourced fare. Whether you’re looking to pick your own crisp apples, enjoy the offerings of a farmers market or explore a specialty shop of handcrafted goods, there’s a wealth of opportunities to satisfy your culinary needs.
A FEW FARM-FRESH GETAWAYS
For those pursuing the ultimate culinary adventure, the Lake Geneva area’s orchards and farms invite you to explore their agricultural bounty. Pick your own apples or grab a pre-picked bag at Apple Barn Orchard & Winery, which is famous for its sweet apple cider, freshly made cider donuts and caramel apples. Come summer, berry picking kicks off the season, while autumn brings pumpkins and gifts galore. The cozy store and winery feature fruit wines and pantry delights, ensuring the impossibility of leaving empty-handed.
If the family is looking for a day loaded with pastoral activities, Royal Oak Farm Orchard is your go-to spot. Amaze ‘N Apples, the only apple tree maze of its kind in the United States, boasts over 2,500 apple trees. Add to that an Instagram-worthy, you-cut flower garden featuring more than 30 varieties of flowers, a large pumpkin market, a petting zoo, a playground, a bakery and a country kitchen. It’s a seasonal carnival of nature’s best offerings.
For an authentic taste of Wisconsin, visit Pearce’s Farm Stand. Recognized for its sweet corn, freshly picked each
morning (seasonally), this farm stand offers an array of fruits, vegetables, jams, jellies and local honey. On weekends, the scent of warm donuts and kettle corn fills the air, adding a whiff of delight to the occasion.
HANDCRAFTED GOODNESS
For a more curated culinary experience, Lake Geneva’s specialty food shops bring you the best local ingredients and artisanal products.
Hill Valley Cheese Shop and Cheese Bar offers a lovely selection of artisan cheese, including curds, cheddar and gouda made from milk sourced from its own dairy farm, but sold in a convenient downtown location. With roots tracing back to 1942, Hill Valley blends tradition and innovation, providing cheese lovers a chance to savor the finest in smallbatch cheese production. A visit to the adjoining cheese bar promises a tasting like no other.
With a legacy of over 55 years, Lake Geneva Country Meats, a family-owned butcher shop, is synonymous with quality. The selection includes freshly cut meats, over 40 kinds of
handmade bratwursts, a range of Wisconsin cheese, bakery items, and locally produced wine and beer. Whether you’re planning a special dinner or stocking up your freezer, Lake Geneva Country Meats is your trusted authority for some of the finest cuts.
Step into The Cheese Box — an award-winning specialty cheese and sausage shop — and you’ll find yourself surrounded by the best Wisconsin has to offer. The Cheese Box’s reputation has been built over 80 years on providing fine cheeses, gourmet sandwiches, and irresistible baked goods like cookies and homemade brownies. Hosting a gathering? The charcuterie boards and party trays make entertaining a cakewalk.
Founded in 1976, River Valley Ranch is celebrated for its chemical-free mushroom farm and artisanal farm kitchen products. The handmade sauces, dips and pickled vegetables are prepared using time-honored techniques that capture the true personality of each ingredient. A visit here adds a tinge of farm-fresh authenticity to your cooking.
Providing the Lake Geneva region with high-quality meats since the 1870s, Wilson Farm Meats guarantees fresh cuts straight from its Walworth County farm. Whether it’s custom butchering or a selection of classic smoked products like bratwursts and summer sausage, this family-run business continues to maintain its devotion to quality and tradition.

Next Door Pub & Pizzeria
Next Door Pub Lakeside
Nowyou can go where the locals go to meet and eat both in Lake Geneva and on Lake Como!
For more than 53 years, our familyowned and operated Next Door Pub & Pizzeria has been serving up great food to families, locals and visitors in the Lake Geneva area. And to celebrate our 53rd year in business, we even opened a brand-new location — Next Door Pub Lakeside — overlooking the beautiful north shore of Lake Como. The new restaurant promises the same family-friendly pricing, the same casual pub scene and “hands down the best pizza in town,” but with enviable lakefront views.
With great food, pleasant service, a friendly atmosphere and a reinvigorated drink menu, you’re sure to make Next Door Pub a regular destination. Why? Because we’re the home of Lake Geneva’s original stone hearth-fired pizza and the 11-time Best of Walworth County award winner for Best Pizza.
A local favorite, our pizza is made from scratch — from crust to sauce — to bring out the best flavors. You can choose your own toppings or take suggestions like our famous Garbage Pizza! Two of our most popular pizzas are the Hot Honey Money and Cheeseburger in Paradise. Owner/
operator Chad Bittner says, “People always tell me it sounds crazy that we put pickles on a pizza until they try it!”
While the Next Door Pub will always serve its time-tested favorites and signatures, the restaurant also boasts one of the largest gluten-free and keto-friendly menus in the area. Plus, the pub has the menu breadth to satisfy all types of palates. The restaurant serves over 100 dishes, including our beloved Italian beef sandwiches, homemade meatballs, lasagna, ribs, salads and much more! Don’t forget about our signature chicken wings and boneless wings with over 25 sauces available.
The Next Door Pub has a rich history of being a community partner through involvement with various local civic organizations, and sourcing local ingredients, like fresh meat from Lake Geneva Country Meats, to make a better-tasting burger.
“We really strive to be partners with our community. We have such an amazing following of both locals and guests, and that speaks for itself,” explains Chad. “We are the locals’ place to meet and eat. Come see what we have to offer!”

Covenant Harbor features a unique combination of amenities: plenty of meeting spaces, a quarter-mile of lakeshore, ropes courses, a climbing wall, a ball field, two dining rooms, swimming, boating, a 17,000-square-foot activity center with a gymnasium, traditional camp activities, and programs for kids and adults. Join one of our high-quality programs or let us help you run your own retreat.
Lake Geneva Camps & Conferences exists to provide life-changing experiences in Christ through retreats and programmed camps. We provide two year-round Christian retreat centers (Lake Geneva Youth Camp and Conference Point) with lodging for groups from eight up to 1,000. Rates include housing, meals, meeting rooms with audiovisual equipment and scheduled time in our full-size gymnasium. Many recreation options are available, like our giant swing, zipline, indoor climbing wall and paintball course, plus swimming and boating at our beautiful waterfront in the summer, and tubing, tobogganing and broom ball in the winter.
Come and be part of the Holiday Home Camp family. We are the area’s oldest nonprofit youth summer camp and so much more! Make our lakeside destination part of your next school or group retreat, rental, special event, family get-together or wedding. Whether it’s a family reunion, team-building retreat, pop-up wedding or other important event, our team wants to help make your event unforgettable no matter the time of year. We have weddings, rentals, camping services and retreats!
Founded in 1909, Norman B. Barr Camp’s mission is to provide a no-cost, Christian-based summer camp experience for children and adults with disabilities. They come from churches, schools and community organizations. Our goal is to boost their confidence and appreciation for the outdoors through daily devotions, singing, hiking, swimming, games, crafts and shared enjoyment. Norman B. Barr Camp is one of the oldest and continuously operating not-for-profit summer camps in the entire United States.
