The legacy of Lake Geneva’s own Gary Gygax is steeped in imagination. While Gygax may not be a household name, the world’s first role-playing game — Dungeons & Dragons® (D&D) — was co-created by Gygax and Dave Arneson right here in Lake Geneva and is known the world over.
Based on creative storytelling, fantasy characters and player role-playing, the game was a radical departure from the traditional board game. Since its introduction in 1974, the game has been played by generations of loyal fans, and is enjoying a recent surge in popularity with gamers of all ages connecting to play in person and online.
In this 50th anniversary year of the pioneering game, Lake Geneva is celebrating the milestone with an array of new experiences and tributes to mark the occasion.

WHO WAS GARY GYGAX?
E. Gary Gygax (1938-2008) was born in Chicago and moved to Lake Geneva with his family in 1946 at the age of 7. Throughout his childhood here, he developed a love of fantasy and science fiction literature. As he raised his own family here, he became a New York Times bestselling author and was the originator of Gen Con®, which is the largest fantasy tabletop game convention in North America today.
Gygax was a visionary whose ambition to share his love of games, science fiction and fantasy would lead him along a path to create a game that would change the world.
The celebrated Dungeons & Dragons® game was conceived in Gygax’s modest house on Center Street in downtown Lake Geneva. What began as a humble enterprise turned into a worldwide phenomenon with an estimated 50 million people having played the game since it was created. Gygax formed the first company to publish the game — it was called TSR, short for Tactical Studies Rules.
It’s fair to say that Gygax is Lake Geneva’s most famous son. In fact, the city declared his birthday, July 27, as Gary Gygax Day and dedicated the Gygax Park Bench in Elm Park to him. He was known to frequent the park for its inspiring lake views.

At the Geneva Lake Museum, a new permanent exhibit called The Wizard of Lake Geneva follows the life and legacy of Gygax, including his role in co-creating the renowned Dungeons & Dragons® game, his bestselling novels and many more notable achievements in the world of gaming.

BUILDING ON THE GYGAX LEGACY
The Gygax Memorial Fund is working to create a permanent memorial to Gary Gygax along the shore of Geneva Lake. It will take the form of a stone gaming table with a bronze statue of Gygax seated on a throne with a dragon coiled around the chair’s base and the game’s distinctive 20-sided dice. Atop the table would be a bronze map of the first level of the original castle dungeon, inviting people to gather around to play Dungeons & Dragons®. The interactive exhibit features a fantasy-themed gaming table, a stained-glass sign that once hung in TSR’s original location, a set of 30 shields featuring original coats of arms designs, as well as an array of D&D artifacts and memorabilia from the past 50 years.

• Animal Attractions – The Dancing Horses Theatre stages a dazzling equestrian performance that is a must-see for horse lovers. • Making Magic – Illusions, magic, comedy and audience participation make the award-winning Tristan Crist Magic Theatre another popular attraction among multi-gen groups. This is the kind of show you’d expect to find in Vegas, with death-defying escapes, a disappearing helicopter and more.
• Orchard Fun – If you’re visiting in the fall, make it a point to stop at Pearce’s Farm Stand in nearby Walworth for pumpkins, fresh donuts and kettle corn, and test your group navigational skills in the 12-acre corn maze. Go apple picking at Royal Oak Farm Orchard and zigzag through the unique apple tree maze.

• Ziplining and Mountain Biking –Lake Geneva Ziplines & Adventures has professionally guided zipline tours that take you flying through 100 acres of treetops. There’s also an all-new
high ropes course strung between trees for an extra challenge (and perhaps a little family competition). A dozen miles of mountain bike trails may convince you to pack the bikes. The Adventure Center at Grand Geneva rents e-bikes and scooters, and sells day passes to ride the 8.5 miles of mountain bike trails there, too.
• Horseback Riding – Round up the gang for a trail ride at Dan Patch Stables where there are also pony rides for the young’uns. Additionally, about a half hour from Lake Geneva is Wild 3L Ranch , which provides guided rides along Kettle Moraine State Forest trails.
• Paddling – Get out on the water via kayak or stand-up paddleboard with rentals from Clear Water Outdoor , located near the downtown boat launch on Geneva Lake. An orientation at the water’s edge is included in the rental.

If being near the water is your happy place, you’re in the right place when you visit the Lake Geneva region. While some may use “Lake Geneva” interchangeably for the lake and the city, the body of water is actually named Geneva Lake. And it’s not the only lake in town. Joining it are Delavan Lake and Lake Como. While the trio of lakes are in close proximity, each offers its own distinct experience. See which one matches up with your vacation personality.

Geneva Lake is a gem, crystal clear to the deep bottom with 8 square miles to explore. Along its 21-mile shoreline is a collection of quaint towns and villages, including Fontana, Williams Bay and Linn.
There is a public shore path that runs the full circumference of the lake, allowing visitors to walk through the front yards of exquisite estates, many built by wealthy Chicagoans who took up summer residence in the area after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Between the historic mansions, the lovely landscaping and the water, there’s a sight to behold in every direction.

1. Riviera Beach: Located in the heart of downtown Lake Geneva, this stretch of sugar-sand beach has lifeguards on duty Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Be sure to get a group photo in front of the fountain that graces the adjacent Riviera building. The historic Riviera features shops with a charming Coney Island feel on the lake level. It’s here at the Riviera Docks that you’ll board the Lake Geneva Cruise Line boats for a tour of the lake, a must when visiting the community.

2. Big Foot Beach State Park: This state park is open year-round, with picnic and playground areas, and miles of hiking trails. Take a dip after you pitch your tent at the campground.

3. Fontana Beach: Located on the lake’s western shore is a large sandy beach and a wide grassy area. During the summer, watch movies (shown on a large, inflatable screen) under the stars. Lifeguards watch over visitors Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
4. Williams Bay Beach: Time slows down at this little beach located off the beaten path. Lifeguards are on duty from Memorial Day through Labor Day. This is a find for anyone looking to enjoy the lazy days of summer.
DELAVAN LAKE
1,906 Acres | Maximum Depth 52 Feet
This body of water is known for exceptional fishing, plus watersports of all sorts. The best way of taking in the pretty, panoramic views is with a ride aboard the Lake Lawn Queen cruise boat, which boasts an openair top deck. The Delavan Lake shoreline is also home to five Frank Lloyd Wright dwellings and other historical landmarks you’ll see on the tour.
5. Community Park Beach: There are lots of ways to have fun here, with a beach, boat launch, playground, volleyball courts and shore fishing.
955 Acres | Maximum Depth 9 Feet
A peaceful lake with a maximum depth of just 9 feet, this well-kept body of water is an especially nice destination for laid-back paddling, swimming and fishing.
6. Lake Access at Mars Resort: Mars Resort has been a favorite supper club destination since 1923. Enjoy the beachfront, which is open to diners and pontoon rides. Be sure to stay for the Friday night fish fry and sunsets.

21+ Miles of Mesmerizing Sights
The Geneva Lake Shore Path is a year-round public footpath that runs the full circumference of Geneva Lake. While that type of public access is rare these days, what makes this path even more remarkable is that it takes you through the front yards of all those historic estates that rim the Geneva Lake shoreline. You get upclose views of magnificent mansions and meticulously landscaped gardens all along the more than 21-mile path. Are you ready to say you’ve walked the famous path?

Lake Geneva Cruise Line has an intriguing option for those looking to walk a portion of the shore path and enjoy a leisurely boat ride back to your starting point. You’ll hike the approximately 7-mile segment of path from Lake Geneva to Williams Bay and then board a boat for the return trip back to Lake Geneva. Or do it in reverse — boat from Lake Geneva to Williams Bay, then walk back. Reservations are required at cruiselakegeneva.com. Allow between three and three and a half hours for the walk, and 45 minutes for the boat ride.
HOW THE PATH CAME TO BE
The trail was formed by the Potawatomi who used it as a footpath between what are now the communities of Fontana, Williams Bay and Lake Geneva. Later, the path provided a route for workers who would head to their jobs building the summer lakeshore estates of wealthy Chicago “movers and shakers” who made Lake Geneva their haven in the late 19th century.
The path was decreed by early settlers who proclaimed that 20 feet leading to the shoreline shall be preserved as public domain. Property owners are responsible for maintaining the section of path that runs through their property and they all put their own personal touch on their section of the shore path.
WALK IT IN SEGMENTS OR ALL IN A DAY
If you’re a hiking superstar, by all means tackle the entire trail in one fell swoop. (On average, it takes 8 to 10 hours to walk the full 21+ miles.) For the rest of us mere mortals, choose from six segments, each averaging between 2 and 4 miles. In the category of “good to know,” the south side of the lake path is more challenging than the north side.
There are public access points with parking and public restrooms in Lake Geneva, Fontana and Williams Bay, and at Big Foot Beach State Park. Three other access points are at Chapin Road, Linn Road and Shadow Lane. See the Geneva Lake Shore Path map on Pages 28 and 29 for segment details.
FAVORITE SIGHTS
Impress your walking buddies with trivia on the lakeshore homes. For example, Stone Manor is the largest mansion on the lake. Black Point Estate, now a Wisconsin historic site, was commissioned by beer baron Conrad Seipp as a summer cottage for his family. Casa del Sueño was home to the creators of the soap opera “The Young and the Restless.” A team of 15 gardeners once tended to the gardens at Flowerside Inn, gardens which have been carefully returned to the original plan. The Schwinn estate, with its original boathouse, was owned by the Schwinn family of bicycle fame. Hillcroft was once part of the Wrigley, as in Wrigley Gum, estates.
1. Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes with a good tread to prevent slipping.
2. Bring water and sunscreen.
Pick up a copy of the official Geneva Lake Shore Path Guide, a handy pocket-size guide detailing over 100 homes and points of interest on the path. Purchase one at the VISIT Lake Geneva Visitor Information Center (201 Wrigley Dr.) or online by scanning the code.
3. Walk with care and during daylight hours. Path surfaces vary, and may be hilly, narrow or wooded in some areas.
4. Bicycles, skates, skateboards and motorized vehicles are not permitted on the shore path.
5. Strollers are not recommended as portions of the path can be uneven.

The Geneva Lake SHORE PATH
TheGeneva Lake Shore Path is a 21.9-mile Native American footpath that encircles the entirety of the lake. It was formed by the Potawatomi people who lived here during the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, the path remains open to the public, meandering along the lakeshore, and crossing the front lawns of historic estates, marinas, beaches and public parks. See pages 24-26 for some Geneva Lake Shore Path tips.
4. SCHWINN ESTATE
In 1922, Ignaz Schwinn, founder of the famous Schwinn bicycle company, built a Victorian summer home on a hill overlooking the lake. Members of the Schwinn family owned the estate for four generations. Today, a 7,500-square-foot French chateau sits where the Victorian home once was.

CONGRESS CLUB
Chicago families looking for a summer retreat established the Congress Club in 1882. Along with the charming lakeside cottages, a large clubhouse was originally located in the center of the grounds for communal meals. The exterior of the homes remain essentially unchanged from the 19th century.
6. YERKES OBSERVATORY
Built in 1897 and home to the world’s largest refracting telescope, Yerkes’ iconic dome can be seen high above the treetops. It was one of two places Albert Einstein asked to visit on his 1921 tour of America. Today, Yerkes is open to the public for tours and special events.
7. GLEN CROFT HAVEN
This modern estate includes a home with a distinctive turret atop the roof, as well as a 20-car garage to house the owner’s collection of vintage automobiles. Guest quarters above the garage include an outdoor kitchen and infinity pool.
3. GLEN FERN
Built for Judge Nathaniel Sears in 1911, Glen Fern typifies the Beaux Arts movement, with its low-pitched roof, symmetrical composition, projecting façade, and a pairing of masonry stone and granite on the exterior walls. The main estate and unique circular barn remain today. C

Just visible above the trees, Black Point Estate was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994 and is open for public tours accessible only by boat. The home was commissioned by beer baron Conrad Seipp in 1888 as a summer cottage and enjoyed by four generations of Seipp descendants.

Built for hotel tycoon Tracy Drake in 1901, Aloha Lodge was named by the Drake family upon returning from a trip to Hawaii, where they befriended the deposed Hawaiian Queen Lili’uokalani. The home has undergone significant enhancements since 2009, substantially increasing in size.

Originally owned by Harris Bank founder Norman Wait Harris and known as Wadsworth Hall, this property was painstakingly restored to its former glory in the 1990s by the late venture capitalist and philanthropist Richard Driehaus (1942-2021).

Built in 1954 and designed by the late James R. Dresser, a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright, this prairie-style building offers some of the best views of the lake. This is a good public access point to begin your Geneva Lake Shore Path walk, heading west past the library and public boat slips.

SUMMER HAVEN
Tucked behind the trees and originally known as Fair Oaks, this summer “cottage” was built in 1889 for James Sager Norton. Nearly 100 years later, new owners labored extensively to bring the home back to its original condition.

BIRDWATCHING AT NIGHT
If you haven’t heard of Lake Geneva’s Swift Night Out, let us introduce you to this display of acrobatic bird behavior. In early fall, thousands of chimney swifts gather over the lakefront signaling their imminent fall migration to South America. As dusk descends, right on cue the birds circle the tall chimney at Geneva Lake Museum before all swooping in to roost. A festive viewing party, put on by the city’s Avian Committee, happens one night each year, complete with local food trucks and a special live raptor program.

Vehicles with disabled passengers, and displaying a valid handicap license plate or placard may park free in any handicap or metered stall throughout the city.
