NEIGHBOUR COVER STORY Lil Big Kid Squad The LIL BIG KID Squad has been working together over the last year and a half to give back to our community. This group of kids virtually come together biweekly to plan and put community giveback projects into action. They have recently completed their second annual Food 4 Families Food Drive for the Newmarket Food Pantry collecting over 2,000 lbs. of food and diapers and over $3,500! Their other projects have included selling flowers to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society, organizing a dog walk to support Local Animal Shelters for the Betty White Challenge, making cards for 1,600 seniors in Long Term Care Centres during the holidays, Backpack and School Supply Collections for families in need, Neighbourhood Garbage Pick Ups, Care Packages for the ER and ICU Staff at Southlake Regional Hospital...and much more! We are currently working on filming a Cooking Series with the Newmarket Food Pantry’s brand new ‘Cereal Centre’, where kids help kids learn how to prepare healthy snacks. Plus we have a few more project ideas up our sleeves! If you are interested in joining one or all of our squads, to help us give back to our community, we would love to meet you. Jennifer, a Nurse I know in a south Florida hospital, like many health care providers, especially in the US, has been facing acute moral distress during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her team and she now faced the most difficult decision ever; who, amongst the new serious Covid patients would be allocated a ventilator and the chance to live longer and how could the team decide this? US California Gov. Gavin Newsom advised hospitals to prioritize younger people with greater life expectancy for care during the coronavirus outbreak. Conversely, In early societies, especially agrarian ones, the elderly were respected and revered, wherein the power was held by a society’s oldest members. In some countries today, the elderly still have influence and power and their vast knowledge is respected. In many modern nations, however, industrialization contributed to the diminished social standing of the elderly. Today wealth, power, and prestige are held by those in younger age brackets. So, is age the simple answer--too simple, perhaps--for the decision to be made by Nurse Jennifer and her team? We’ll also open the new skate park at the Magna Centre this summer, giving kids another place to play. You can get your fill of classic family movies with the Moonlight Movie series popping up in parks throughout town.

One of the biggest Canada Day celebrations in the GTA returns to downtown, along with an evening concert and fireworks at George Richardson Park. We’ll continue to celebrate the arts as we head into the Fall with the On-Act Play festival, September 8 – 10, and the always awe-inspiring Newmarket Group of Artist Art Walk and Studio Tour that runs the first weekend in October. After two years of restrictions, I am looking forward to seeing everyone out on the town enjoying all that Newmarket has to offer. MAYOR MRAKAS Join us for Aurora’s 25th anniversary of Concerts in the Park Aurora’s Concerts in the Park presented by TD are back for another great summer! Join us every Wednesday night throughout July and August for this amazing summer tradition of listening to live music in our historic Town Park. If you’ve never been before, now is the time. On July 6th we will be kicking off our first of nine weekly outdoor concerts with two-time Juno nominee and crowd favourite, George St. Kitts. This is the Town’s 25th year of concerts and the entertainment lineup will not disappoint with a variety of musical genres including RnB, Country, Classic Rock, Celtic and Pop. For more information on this year’s musical line-up, please visit: aurora.ca/summerconcerts. All concerts are drop in with no pre-registration required. All you’ll need is your lawn chairs and your dancing feet! Food will be available on site, with the Aurora Armoury open for takeout, as well as select food vendors from the Aurora Farmers’ Market. The Salvation Army, Northridge Community Church hosted its first Scrapbook and Papercraft Fundraiser on June 11th. Forty-one women raised over $3900.00 for mental health services within Central York Region, by doing something they loved. The Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth was commemorated in June. Canadians cheered as the Canadian Men’s National Soccer Team qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 1986, and as the Women’s National Hockey Team won Gold at the Beijing Olympics. We can also celebrate the 401,115 refugees and protected persons that became Canadian permanent residents in 2021.

On May 20th, the Aurora Cultural Centre hosted TiKA. Embracing the genre rightfully coined as “futuristic nostalgia”, TiKA’s compositions offer “ethereal sounds that wrap around you, reminding you of other memories.” TiKA is a multidisciplinary artist based in Montreal. A singer-songwriter-filmmaker-model-mental health advocate, her fans flock to her magnetic live performances. Her long-awaited album, Anywhere But Here came out in 2019.

The memorial commemorated and honoured those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our rights as Canadians. At the top of the hill on Main Street in Newmarket's Historic Downtown, overlooking the bustling streets and local community, sits the Old Flame Brewing Company, the MOST AWARDED CRAFT LAGER BREWERY IN CANADA. Seven years after opening the first brewery in Port Perry, the building lovingly and locally known as “The Old Fire Hall” became available for occupancy and Old Flame opened the doors of their second location in December 2020. Built in 1952, the local fire hall served the community up until 1972. Given its historic value to the community, Old Flame committed to preserving the history and original character of the building - as they have done with their flagship location. Inside the Newmarket brewery, the brewing team focuses on creating experimental and seasonal recipes inspired by the community. On June 18th, the community gathered on Main Street, Newmarket for the annual York Pide Parade! There were amazing floats, colourful outfits, great food/drinks, smiling people and music that made you want to get up and dance! THE MEADOWS OF AURORA – A UNIQUE APPROACH TO 65+ RETIREMENT LIVING The Meadows of Aurora is a one-of-a-kind retirement residence located in Aurora just north of Wellington off Leslie. The resort style campus sits on 25 acres with over half of the property protected forest. Featuring 10+ obstacles, an after party of music, family friendly activities and food, Sport Aurora Scramble is the ultimate kick-off to fall! Runners will embark on a fun 5 km adventure through obstacles such as wall climbs, net crawls and tire runs. Too tough? Not to worry. There is a 2 km option and each obstacle on both courses will be graded in difficulty, so you choose how much of a challenge you want. We will be fundraising for Rick Hansen Public School, Sport Aurora as well as All Kids Can Play! Canada Soccer Active Start Soccer Fest Coming out of the pandemic, we at Newmarket Soccer Club had to think about what the community and club had been missing for the past 2 or so years. It was a very quick realization that the Canada Soccer Active Start Soccer Fest is the best way to show our appreciation and gratitude to our membership. Providing a couple of joyful days filled with activities and soccer for the young members of our club! It was also a perfect opportunity to connect with old and new faces of our community and invite our partners to get involved and join us.

A MESSAGE FROM ABUSE HURTS Abuse Hurts continues to serve women and children escaping abuse. Since COVID restrictions have been lightening up, the demand on our programs have been increasing. Domestic abuse increased by 30% during COVID. We are requesting donations of gently used clothing and furniture (single or queen beds, small kitchen sets, small dressers, couches, chairs, lamps and other small, functional pieces of furniture). Financial support is always welcome through our website. We are currently looking for volunteers in several areas within the charity operations. On May 30th, the Town of Aurora presented the 2022 Community Recognition Awards! Erin Cerenzia from Neighbourhood Network Network did a beautiful job as the evening's emcee. Ysabel Cattle, Aurora's Teen Idol, started the evening by singing The National Anthem. Mayor Tom Mrakas, Councillors Harold Kim, Rachel Gilliland, Sandra Humfryes, Michael Thompson and John Gallo presented the Service Awards and Recognition Awards to this years recipients. Council Chamber was filled with so many inspiring members of our community including past recipients of The Citizen of the Year Award. Congratulations to all of the individuals and businesses who won awards during this evening of recognition. You are all #amazingneighbours

What is your favourite food? Thai food - I love it from Chiang Rai Restaurant What is your favourite season (winter, spring, summer, fall), and why? Spring – This season brings renewed hope, sunshine, beautiful blossoms, greenery, outdoor meet and mingle, longer days, less layers and flip flops occasionally. If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be? Enjoy these times and go all out to get what you want, because this time will not return, but these experiences can make memories to cherish for a lifetime! If you were a superhero, what would your powers be, and why? To bring a smile onto the faces of the less privileged, less fortunate and sick. What is your favourite song, artist/group or genre of music? Whitney Houston’s – I’m Every Woman, it's all in me :) .

Connecting is what gives me purpose How long have you lived in the community? When I married John in May 2017, my youngest daughter and I moved to Aurora. Which has proved to be one of my best decisions (outside of marrying my dear hubby). What is one thing that most people don’t know about you? During the pandemic I was given the gift of time to realize my dream to certify as a birth and postpartum doula and childbirth educator. I started my own small business: Hopeful Expectations. What does being a good neighbour mean to you? Anticipating needs and meeting them - and when you can’t anticipate, then ask what you can do to help. What is your favourite holiday to celebrate? I love the Fall so my favourite holiday is Thanksgiving Day. All the same food as Christmas without the overwhelming busyness. What is your favourite song, artist/group or genre of music After our wedding ceremony we walked out to Foreigner’s Feels Like the First Time. I have seen them in concert four times! .

What is your most memorable community moment? That would be when we launched the ONEBAG Challenge in support of the pantry. It created a fun and buzzing community vibe. How long have you lived in the community? I’ve lived in Newmarket for 21 years. I moved from Calgary in 2001. If you could have dinner with one person, dead or alive, who would it be? My Grandfather. He is my inspiration and guiding light and would love to have one more meal with him. What is your favourite series to binge? On Netflix, it would be Suits. What does being a good neighbour mean to you? Smiling when you see your neighbour, lending a hand, and just having a chat with them. Checking in on them once in a while just to say, “How are you neighbour?”
