Neighbour Paper is distributed free of charge through key distribution partners including local advertisers, retail outlets and various community centres. Views expressed by any contributor are not necessarily that of the Neighbour Media team.

Laurie Osborne

Laurie is a long-time Newmarket resident and supporter of small businesses, who has attended, participated in and supported many local events! She loves our community and always tries to be kind, helping out neighbours in need whenever she can.

The Terry Fox Run has always been one of her favourite charity events to participate in, which is 100% organized by volunteers and all money raised goes to research for all forms of cancer. Laurie saw #GoodNeighbours like Jackie Playter and The Blight Family giving back and volunteering in the community, so she decided that she wanted to do more than just participate each year.

In 2006, the Newmarket Terry Fox Run volunteer organizer stepped down. Laurie and another participant/friend took this opportunity to contact the Terry Fox Foundation and offer to take on the responsibility of organizing the Newmarket event. They found out quickly how hard volunteering can be, but after their first year they continued to build their amazing team. Volunteering has brought Laurie so many great connections and friendships over the years

In 1997, Laurie was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and went through 8 months of chemo, becoming cancer free in 1998. She really didn’t realize the importance of what Terry Fox started back in 1980… until she got sick. Laurie’s cancer treatment was made possible because of Terry Fox research funds and she is forever grateful for that.

Laurie has also lost friends and family to cancer, and intends to keep raising research funds in the memory

cousin Robin. Robin was on the volunteer organizing committee, taught at the

Robin’s co-workers joined to form Team Robins Side Kicks and since 2015 has raised $94,978 in

The answer is probably yes.

The Scotiabank GTA NORTH Women in Leadership group along with their district branches hosted a Back to School Backpack and School Supply Drive for the Newmarket Food Pantry. This was the inaugural community initiative from the District Women in Leadership group and they plan on making it an annual event. Donating school items allows families on a strict budget to direct that portion of their budget back to food and shelter. The backpacks were geared towards Grade 1 - 6 students and included pencils, pens, pencil cases, crayons, markers, paper, binders and lunch bags. Thank you to the Scotiabank team for giving back to our community!

Hello! I'm Lottie - a sweetie that is very friendly with everyone I meet. I love giving gentle hugs and will paw at you for a head pat. My Dog Tales family are still evaluating me with other dogs, but they say I am showing great signs. I have medium energy and overall am a very easy going and happy girl!

Griffin

Hi there! My name's Gri n and I'm a 6 month old magical beast..oops I mean an English Cream Retriever! I love snuggling with my Mom, eating everything in sight and turning any object into a game of tug of war. I'm a playful guy who loves everyone I meet!

Charlie

Hey, I'm the newest member of the Neighbour Team! My name is Charlie and I'm a 6 month old Bernedoodle. My first couple of months were a little ruff with my first family but now I have found my furever home with my big brother Duke, big sister Daisy and pawrents that love me so much. Life is pawfect!

I’m l k g f my F e r Home

Chibi

I'm Chibi! I was found as a stray and never claimed. Dog Tales heard I was going to be euthanized due to my biting tendencies, and took me in. When I first arrived I was very afraid, but their team worked hard to gain my trust and now I am truly a different dog. I love to dance for affection, get belly rubs and go for long walks. Although my behaviour has improved greatly, I will still need someone that can continue my training, respect my boundaries and introduce me to people carefully (a home with no young children). Once I love you, I'll be by your side forever!

Kiya

Woof! Hi, my name is Kaiya. I’m a 4 month old Shepherd lab husky rescue. I love to destroy my toys, give my parents kisses and I’m a big fan of my fur sibling Maui. We play together a lot - he's a great big brother.

Cash

Hi, I'm Cash! I am a year and a half old Greater Swiss Mountain dog. I am a big fan of the winter but have been keeping cool this summer with regular dips in any water I can find. The only thing I love more than kisses and snuggles from my humans is making new dog friends!

A MESSAGE FROM MPP DAWN GALLAGHER MURPHY

These past few weeks, it was an honour to share in the recognition of Clean Air Partnership, Markham Cycles, and Aurora Cycles, as well as the Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex who all recently received funding from our government through the Ontario Trillium Foundation. It was also a pleasure to participate in the Emancipation Day events hosted around our community to reflect on the past while also recognizing the importance of supporting the future of Black communities.

The Ontario government is investing an additional $330 million each year in pediatric health services to connect children and youth to more convenient and high-quality care close to home at hospitals, clinics, and community-based health care facilities across Ontario. With this new investment, over 100 high-priority initiatives will be quickly implemented to ensure children and youth in every corner of the province can connect to emergency care, surgeries, ambulatory services, diagnostic imaging, and mental health services. This consistent and stable funding increase will also allow pediatric hospitals to make significant increases to sta ng to ensure they have the people and resources needed to prevent backlogs and improve access to care. Through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP), the governments of Canada and Ontario are committing more than $68 million in the Ontario Agricultural Sustainability Initiative (OASI) to fund three programs designed to support farmers in making their agricultural lands more productive and resilient. To learn more about these investments and more, visit my website at dawngallaghermurphympp.ca.

On July 29th, parents, teachers, emergency responders and the community were invited to attend a Human Tra cking Awareness event at Central York Fire Services Station 4-5, to learn about the issue locally, how to spot signs of someone being groomed or tra cked (sex and labour) and what to do if you spot them. The event was organized in partnership with over 20 community groups and emergency services departments. Thank you CYFS and the other participating organizations for organizing this event and continuing to protect our community.

On August 8th, long time Aurora resident, volunteer and all around good neighbour Kay Hack celebrated her 100th Birthday! Surrounded by her family, friends, neighbours, dignitaries, members of council and the Mayor, Kay had an incredible day celebrating the milestone!

On July 31st, representatives from MPP Michael Parsa’s o ce met with the York Region Food Network to recognize an $86,900 Resilient Communities Fund grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). This project has helped York Region Food Network rebuild and recover from the impacts of COVID-19. Funds from the grant were used to develop a new strategic plan for the organization, toolkits to help with evaluation and communications to better share our impact in the community and to hire staff to build and initiate a fundraising plan.

Seniors and Cannabis; Risks and Rewards - Part One -

“Weed 7: A Senior Moment” premiered on August 6th, 2023, on “The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper.” Narrated by Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a medical expert often appearing on CNN. In this documentary, he stated:

“Most remarkable to me is the demographic switch. Seniors — people over the age of 65 — are now the fastest growing group of cannabis users in the United States. Right now, we are witnessing a sort of ‘senior moment.’”

His statement leads naturally to the question, why is this ’senior moment’ occurring?

He suggested that, according to recent studies, seniors' use of cannabis daily helps address some of the nuisances of aging: arthritis, poor sleep, aches, pains and moods.

But, it should be clearly noted that Cannabis, when viewed as a medicine, is like any other medication; it should be held accountable for its risks and its rewards. It’s quite important to highlight for seniors, for everyone, the risks as well as the rewards suggested above.

Cannabis is a plant that has chemicals called cannabinoids. The most common cannabinoids are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). The term “marijuana” refers to parts of or products from the plant Cannabis sativa or, simply, Cannabis-- that contain substantial amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the substance that’s primarily responsible for the effects of marijuana on a person’s mental state. Some cannabis plants contain very little THC.

THC affects your brain to make you feel “high” and changes how you think, feel and act. The higher the level of THC, the greater the intoxicating effects. THC is mostly responsible for the health risks associated with cannabis. CBD does not cause intoxicating effects and can lessen the THC effects. CBD is being studied for possible medical uses.

Consequences of Raising the Prime Rate

The Bank of Canada has raised the prime rate twice since June 8th. This has consequences for both Buyers and Sellers including:

Impact on Buyer Affordability:

As mortgage rates inch up, potential home buyers find their purchasing power diminishing. Affordability concerns arise as tighter lending standards and higher monthly payments challenge the ability of first-time Buyers to enter the market.

Shift in Buyer Behavior:

As interest rates rise, Buyers reassess their priorities. Some delay home purchases while they save money or wait for the market to stabilize. This could result in decreased demand and a decline in housing prices.

Effects on Inventory Levels:

As the demand weakens, inventory levels could increase. Homeowners may face di culties in selling their properties, triggering longer listing periods and price reductions.

Implications for Development:

Developers may become cautious in investing in new ventures, leading to a slowdown in construction and a reduced supply of new homes.

Options for Existing Homeowners:

Homeowners with variable-rate mortgages may find their higher monthly payments straining household budgets, leading to a rise in debt or, in extreme cases, foreclosure. Homeowners may need to explore refinancing, switching to fixed-rate mortgages, or seeking financial advice.

Affordability concerns, shifts in Buyer behaviour, increased inventory levels, and implications for development are factors that both homebuyers and Sellers must navigate in this evolving market. Proactive measures and informed decision-making will be vital in successfully maneuvering through these challenging times.

The next Bank of Canada rate decisions will be on September 4th, and on October 23rd.

Happy Labour Day

A Message from MP Leah Taylor Roy

Hello, Neighbours!

September is now here, and the school year has begun. Over the past month, I have continued to visit neighbourhoods throughout Aurora and have enjoyed attending many community events to connect with you. Among these are, my Community BBQ, Frank’s Organic Garden, Canada Summer Jobs recipients, CleanRiver Recycling Solutions and many more. To commemorate Emancipation Day, I attended the Freedom Underground Train Ride from Union to Downsview Station in Toronto. I am excited to invite you to Richmond Green Park for the first Uptown Asian Festival which is being held from September 1st-3rd.

In recognition of Labour Day, I want to share what our government is doing for our Canadian Workforce. In July, Canadians received the first of three installments of the Canada Workers Benefit (CWB). The CWB provides $2,616 total for an eligible family, and $1,518 total for eligible single workers, the next payment will be made in October of 2023. The CWB has helped over 14,000 constituents within our riding. This is one of the several programs we have put in place to help with affordability.

The house resumes on September 18th, which means I will be back in Ottawa. My priority as an MP is to ensure that I communicate with you and bring your concerns and opinions to the national level. As the warm weather continues, make sure to stay tuned to my website and social media for where and when I will host my in-person Coffee & Chats. Hope to see you this fall!

In loving memory of Eleanor Thomson, CD Eleanor joined the Aurora Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion on August 19, 1995. She served in WW2 from September 11, 1944 and was Honourably discharged on July 10, 1946. Eleanor then served in the Reserves from September 1954 to January 1967. Her last unit was with the Toronto Scottish Regiment. After she joined the Legion, she was quick to volunteer with many functions around the Branch - always willing to help wherever she could! She spent a great deal of time judging the poems and essays through the Youth Education Program and was a very valuable asset to the committee. Eleanor spoke her mind and was very determined. She will be missed greatly at the Aurora Legion and within the community. Here’s to Eleanor - Lest We Forget.

Letter from MAYOR TAYLOR

Thanks for making Newmarket beautiful

The upside of our rainy summer is lush parks and gardens overflowing with colour. Walking through town it is amazing to see the creativity and pride residents take in maintaining their homes and making Newmarket a beautiful place.

While all this rain makes it easier to grow just about anything, it also makes it even more important to stay on top of property maintenance. Many residents put a lot of effort into maintaining their properties, let's respect those efforts by doing the same. This includes mowing the lawn regularly, including the boulevards next to the road, trimming back overgrown plants and shrubs, removing dead leaves and dried-out planters, as well as removing brush and not letting other debris pile up.

Thanks for taking pride in our Town and together we will keep Newmarket beautiful.

Abuse Hurts Champion of the Month

We are so proud to name Maria Vitaro our Abuse Hurts Champion of the month! Maria is the main hair stylist for our Delivering Hope Makeover Day program and we are so grateful for her generosity and time. We are touched every time Maria leaves at the end of a makeover day and thanks the charity for the privilege of participating in the program. Truly, we want to let her know we are appreciative of her ongoing contribution.

Maria owns Crown Hair Lounge on 15263 Yonge Street, Aurora and says, “I have been doing hair for a very long time - since I was 17 years old. The love of the beauty industry is where my heart is. Not only is it challenging and creative but also rewarding. I opened my salon to give people the opportunity to love how they look and for them to feel better on the inside. I not only create a look unique to them but also listen to their life stories. It’s important to give people the opportunity to feel connected. Beauty is not only on the outside but it’s on the inside. I like to make them feel confident and amazing! I decided to volunteer so I could offer my talent to the women at Abuse Hurts so they could feel beautiful. I wanted to bring smiles, laughter and happiness to their lives. Hair is a permanent crown we wear every day and that’s important to me.”

Thank you, beautiful Maria from all of us at Abuse Hurts.

Starting your own business can be scary, but for those that decide to take the leap, the rewards are great.

Hairstylist Sara Bea’s owner, Sara Little, saw the vision right away and decided to move from a salon to Salon City because she “wanted to take control of my own business and work on scaling my business for the future”.

Chelsea Searle, owner of Captivate Hair Studio, also made the jump from a salon because “it had always been a goal of mine to open my own studio. So when Salon City opened close to me, it seemed like the perfect next step. I love the brand I have created for my guests and they really enjoy the relaxing atmosphere the private studio offers.”

Sinead’s Bespoke Boutique, owned by Sinead Bisson, “decided to move to Salon City because I wanted to be my own boss. It’s important to me that my clients are getting the best experience from start to finish, and having my own space allowed me to do that.”

Jess Stevens, of The Rich Brunette is “so excited to start my solo journey after 11 years in busy salons - now I will be able to provide my guests with a one on one experience and an opportunity to pamper and spoil each of them individually. My studio will be a place of tranquility but also cozy and fun!”

Are you tired of working for someone else? Have you ever dreamed about being your own boss? If you feel stuck in your current job situation and looking for a change, starting your own personal care business might just be the right move for you. Contact us to learn more!

Get to Know YOUR NEIGHBOURS Edition

On Thursday October 5th these #GoodNeighbours will be dancing at the Royal Venetian, raising money for Easter Seals Ontario. We wanted to get to know them a little better and have asked them each the following 2 questions:

1. What is your favourite dance move?

2. Why did you decide to dance this year?

I can't dance at all so the "two pint shu e" aka I only feel confident to bust out my top tier moves after a few beverages.

It was such an honor to be asked to participate. I've always wanted to help with anything supporting children (especially since becoming a father). The team at Easter Seals do such amazing things for the kids so I was happy to be involved in any capacity.

Cortney Cassidy

I'm a ballet and jazz fan, so I'd have to say nothing beats a beautiful pirouette or properly executed jazz hands!

I am really inspired by the work being done at Easter Seals to help kids. With barriers removed, these kids can do anything - I knew I wanted to be a part of making that happen!

I enjoy the jive.

I got involved because I have an employee at my business that has Down’s Syndrome and Adam is my motivator. Just the opportunity to help raise funds for the Easter Seals which helps support kids with physical disabilities is so special. I just hope that I can dance!

"The Carlton" from fresh prince I decided to dance this year because of Easter Seals. Charity and children always have a big spot in my heart. Although this is out of my comfort level, to help these kids is all that matters to me. Our community means the world to me.

To learn more about these local celebrities, to vote for your favourite dancer and to donate, please visit eastersealsdancing.org/newmarket

Would have to be either the running man or the sprinkler for obvious reasons they are both classic moves and very elegant.

I decided to dance this year because I have 2 children of my own and I have always been a big supporter of the community and thought what better way to raise money than show off my amazing dance moves.

Slow dancing with my husband.

I attended the 2021 Dancing with the Easter Seals Stars event, prior to that I did not understand the impact that Easter Seals has. Since then any opportunity I have to support the Kids of Easter Seals I’m going to take, even if it means dancing in front of 300 people.

All .. the music just moves me.

I am dancing for a very personal reason. Someone very close to me was a part of Easter seals. I dance for Joey.

Tracee Chambers

It depends on the event and the mood. I love to dance here, there and everywhere. Often in my kitchen by myself!! LOL.

I've been involved with quite a few different charities over the years and being asked to be a part of this great event has made me realize I haven't fundraised for children, which as a mom is very close and dear to my heart.
