• Abel Alvarez: As Student Council President, Abel is a tireless advocate for the student body. He bridges the gap between students and administration, balances academic excellence with a passion for the arts, and leads school spirit initiatives and pep rallies with infectious positivity. • Cary Li: As Event Coordinator for the Central York Leadership Group, Cary helped raise over $2,400 for local causes and organized major events like • • •
Career Carnival. Beyond Senior Student Council, he co-founded his school's Game Development Club and serves as an award-winning swim instructor. Rachel Choi: A Specialist High Skills Major student in ICT, Rachel serves as Music VP on the Arts Council and plays in the school concert band. Outside of school, she leads church calligraphy classes, crafts comforting gifts for hospitalized children via the Care Crafts Project, and works on the school's voluntary Tech Crew. Ryan Wang: Co-President of the Central York Leadership Group, Ryan co-founded Coins and Connections to deliver practical financial literacy training to youth nationwide. His extensive service includes planting local pollinator gardens, peer tutoring, and volunteering with Southlake Hospital, Abuse Hurts, and local food pantries. Samreen Khurram: Driven by a passion for equal recreation, Samreen identified barriers faced by community members with physical disabilities and successfully secured a $12,000 Enabling Accessibility Fund grant. Her initiative launched Rolling Hoops, bringing inclusive wheelchair

One of those essential services is Southlake Health. Southlake is a cornerstone of health care for families across Newmarket–Aurora, northern York Region, and South Simcoe. As our community continues to grow, I remain committed to supporting Southlake’s Davis Drive site and ensuring it continues to provide high-quality care close to home for generations to come. Our government has made significant investments in Southlake in recent years, most recently, I was proud to announce more than $16.6 million in combined funding for 2026–27. This includes $3.7 million through the Health Infrastructure Renewal Fund for critical infrastructure upgrades and repairs, as well as $12.9 million in additional hospital operational funding.
These investments are about more than dollars. They help ensure Southlake has the infrastructure and resources needed to provide a safe, modern environment for patients, families, and health-care professionals, while continuing to meet the needs of our growing community. On July 31st, the Newmarket African Caribbean Canadian Association (NACCA) brought the community together at Peace Park in Newmarket to commemorate Emancipation Day — a meaningful opportunity to reflect on our history and the ongoing journey toward equity, justice and opportunity for all. York Regional Police has supported the Law Enforcement Torch Run for more than 35 years. $35,000 raised for Special Olympics Ontario, and hundreds of runners, walkers, volunteers, sponsors and donors. Detective Constable Rob Plunkett, who was killed in the line of duty in August 2007, served as Chair of the 2000 Special Olympics Spring Games in York Region and participants in the Race for Plunkett honour his memory and commitment to Special Olympics. Law Enforcement Torch Run events raise funds and awareness for the Special Olympics movement. Law enforcement officers from more than 30 countries carry the Flame of Hope in honour of Special Olympics athletes worldwide. The Torch Run is the largest fundraiser for Special Olympics in the world.

You can try out the Woodland Loop winding through the trees on roller skates to tide you over until the temperature drops and the trail becomes one of the longest outdoor refrigerated skating trails in the GTA. Grab a bite or a coffee at the Chickadee Cafe by A Million Mouthfuls. Check out the Glass House — an event space inspired by arboretum buildings that harkens to a time when the site was an experimental farm. The kids can play in the Hollow Log Play Park, a natural play area with water, sand, and wood demonstrating the lifecycle of a forest. There is something for everyone. We engaged extensively in planning and designing the park, and people haven’t stopped talking about it since. This park will be a landmark destination for future generations to gather. I believe it will set a new standard for parks in the GTA. When you experience it, you will know why … I can’t wait to meet you at Mulock.

As summer begins to wind down, families across the community are getting ready for a new school year, and I want to wish every student, parent, educator, and school staff member a safe, successful, and fulfilling year ahead. The start of school is an opportunity to reconnect with peers, set new goals, and look forward to the opportunities that come with a fresh beginning.
I also want to take this opportunity to recognize the frontline workers who serve the community every day. From healthcare professionals and emergency responders to educators, social service workers, municipal staff, and countless others, their dedication helps keep communities safe, healthy, and strong. Their work often happens quietly, but its impact is felt by all of us.
As we look ahead to September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation offers an important opportunity to reflect on the lasting impacts of residential schools, honour Survivors, and recognize the strength, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. Reconciliation is an ongoing responsibility that requires continuous learning, meaningful action, and a commitment to building relationships grounded in understanding, respect, and truth.

Big or Small - Every Event Makes a Difference - Fundraise for CHATS Throughout the year, incredible individuals, families, businesses and community groups come together in their own unique ways to raise funds in support of CHATS - Community & Home Assistance to Seniors. These third-party events can look very different - from a small gathering of friends or neighbours to a larger community or corporate event. Some raise a few hundred dollars, while others raise thousands. But the size of the event isn’t what matters. Every event, every participant and every dollar raised helps CHATS provide programs and services that enable older adults to live safely, independently and with dignity in their own homes. Best of all, you don’t have to be an experienced fundraiser or event planner. You simply need an idea and the desire to make a difference. Take Sharon Parenteau, for example. Several times a year, Sharon organizes a community shredding event in support of CHATS. It’s a simple idea that brings people together, provides a useful service and gives back at the same time. Your event can be anything you want it to be. The Law Must Protect Victims, Not Intruders You have told me time and again that if you are ever forced to defend yourself or your family from a home invasion, you want to know that the law will stand with you, not with the criminal who put you in danger. That is why I introduced the Stand on Guard Act. This legislation would strengthen protections for law-abiding Canadians who are forced to defend themselves or their families during a home invasion. The bill would create a legal presumption that the force used to protect yourself or a loved one was reasonable, unless evidence proves otherwise. It would also establish a rebuttable presumption that someone who knowingly and unlawfully enters an occupied home intends to use force against those inside. This is about restoring common sense to our justice system. Your home is your safe place, and it deserves special protection under Canadian law. If an intruder unlawfully enters your home and puts your family in danger, you should not have to fear that defending your loved ones could turn you into the accused. Introduced this spring, the Stand on Guard Act is expected to come before Parliament for debate and a vote this fall. I look forward to making the case for legislation that strengthens your rights and puts the safety of victims ahead of those who threaten them. I will continue listening to you and fighting for a justice system that protects victims, supports those who keep us safe, and puts your safety first.

Sir William Mulock House

The Mulock House, situated at the north-west corner of Yonge St. and Mulock Dr. will soon be opened as “Mulock Park” for the citizens of Newmarket in the coming weeks. Made famous by Sir William Mulock, born in 1843, a lawyer and judge, known amongst other achievements for organizing the University of Toronto, becoming Canada’s first Minister of Labour, Post Master General and model farmer who lived to be 101. The Mulock House was originally an old Quaker farm house which Sir William substantially enlarged with a series of additions. His primary residence was on Jarvis St. in Toronto, and the Mulock House in Newmarket (then the community of Armitage) was his summer home. The Mulock House, situated originally on 400 acres, was located on a model farm, known for its orchards. Historically preserved and soon to be available to the public, it retains a rare example of our built heritage and unique history. 1. Affordability
The cost-of-living is a top concern for our federal and provincial governments - and Aurora must treat it the same way. Rising rent, fuel and food costs, higher unemployment, and persistent inflation have pushed our economy into uncertainty. Despite this, Aurora’s continues to fund non-essential projects instead of offering residents’ meaningful financial relief. This must CHANGE.
2. End Strong Mayor Powers
Aurora’s Mayor accepted Strong Mayor Powers (SMP) in 2023, along with a pledge to fast-track 8,000 new homes, by 2031. SMP also gave the Mayor control over the Budget, authority to advance Provincial priorities, and the ability to veto Council decisions, with only 3 of 7 votes. Despite these extraordinary powers, Aurora has only built approximately 1% of their housing target and SMP have been misused to veto the majority of Council on four occasions creating unwelcomed tension inside Town Chambers. This must CHANGE.

3. Governance & Budget Reform
Aurora’s Council has steadily delegated more decision-making authority to Staff, to save time. As a result, Council has created a system where significant revenues are directed away from tax cuts and applied to the Capital Budget Authority without discussion or strong checks. Then these capital projects are approved in isolation without solid justification or consideration of the Town’s overall financial plan. This must CHANGE.

Rescind the use of Strong Mayor Powers and return the power to Council. Promote greater Town transparency and accountability, on all matters. Assign Council greater financial oversight to establish budget limits, for departments and projects. Implement new bylaws and best practices to enhance procurement and prioritize all projects while allowing for their cancellation, deferral, or phased completion. Establish “resident first” policies for the use of surpluses, savings and Reserve Fund balances. These steps will restore fiscal discipline and rebuild the public’s confidence in local government.

RELATED TOWN ISSUES TO BE ADDRESSED Shawn’s Commitment – to unite Council to tackle the following issues head-on to ensure they receive the attention they have long been denied. The “Funding Gap” For years, the Town has acknowledged a persistent 10-year capital funding gap, meaning future revenues will not cover planned future spending. Growth Does Not Pay for Growth The Town’s “high standards” has resulted in unnecessary overspending, of new property tax and development charge, revenues collected to connect these properties with programs and services. The shortfall is pushed onto existing taxpayers, who end up subsidizing new development. Reserve Fund Imbalances Aurora typically holds $75M–$130M across 32 reserve accounts each year. Many balances do not match actual spending needs, and some are far higher than any documented project requirements. Grant Revenue & Savings Not Returned to Taxpayers When the Town receives grants or reports departmental “savings,” the money remains in reserves - rather than returned to taxpayers in the form of lower taxes, user fees, or water bills. Strong York Region Chair Powers (Bill 100) & Spending Oversight Roughly 42% of every Aurora tax bill goes to York Region’s $5B budget, governed by 22 elected representatives. The Province is determined to reduce those representatives down to nine Mayors. This is undemocratic, reduces oversight and equates to, too much taxation without enough representation. Costly Deals & Rising Debt For eight years, Aurora has taken on unnecessary leases, land acquisitions, and sports facility investments with unclear returns and growing maintenance costs. These decisions knowingly drive-up taxes and user fees.

• Ontario’s earliest form of local government dates
back to the creation of the District of Hesse in 1793, which had an appointed district council. This was not a modern municipal election, though.
• Hamilton held what is documented as its first
municipal election in 1847, after being incorporated as a town. Voters elected councillors, who then selected the mayor from among themselves.

Reuben Street
Why was the Kennedy family in Aurora? You might remember in our Tyler Street profile we related the story of three Loyalist soldiers placed in New Brunswick who petitioned for better land grants, where each received about 200 acres abutting Yonge Street on the West side. Alongside WIlliam Tyler and Shadrach Stephens, the third grantee was William Kennedy. But aren’t we looking at Reuben Street today? The Reuben in question was one Reuben Judd Kennedy, grandson of that Loyalist land grantee and prominent Aurora resident – for a time! He was born in 1837, the same year his grandfather William died, on the family homestead, and attended school in Aurora. He was in his 20s when the gold rush hit in Western Canada, and he moved out to participate with a handful of local men in 1862, returning to Aurora in 1867. In the early 1880s, he was elected to Town Council and had his buff brick home, Elmwood Lodge, constructed on Yonge Street. The street running alongside it was named Reuben before 1885. In 1886 he was the president of the Aurora School Board and oversaw the process that gave us our stately school building that today houses the Aurora Museum & Archives. Startlingly, Reuben Kennedy moved to Toronto later that year, selling his home and farm, but that yellow house still stands guard on the street named for him. David Willson Trail
David Willson Trail, located in Sharon, is named after David Willson, one of the most intriguing and influential figures in East Gwillimbury's early history. Born in New York, Willson immigrated to Upper Canada in 1801 and settled among the Quakers. However, his radical religious visions and passionate preachings led him to break away in 1812 to found a new sect called the Children of Peace. Under Willson's charismatic leadership, the group settled in the village of Sharon, building a thriving, cooperative community based on social equality, charity, and communal harmony. Willson was a poet, mystic, and reformer who championed Canadian democracy long before it was mainstream, famously supporting political reformers leading up to the Rebellion of 1837. His most famous achievement is the Sharon Temple, an architectural marvel built between 1825 and 1832. Designed by Willson and constructed by master builder Ebenezer Doane, the striking three-story wooden temple was filled with rich symbolic geometry intended to reflect equality, faith, and light. Today, the Sharon Temple stands as a National Historic Site, and David Willson Road serves as a lasting tribute to the visionary leader whose unique community put East Gwillimbury on the historical map.
Wakefield Place Wakefield Place in Newmarket commemorates a prominent pioneer family whose earliest members arrived as Quakers alongside Timothy Rogers to settle the region in 1801. Rogers had brought roughly 20 families from Vermont after securing land grants along Yonge Street, laying the agricultural foundations for the community that grew into modern-day Newmarket. As the town expanded throughout the 19th century, the Wakefields became established local figures and dedicated philanthropists. Theophilus Brooks Wakefield left an especially enduring mark on the municipality’s architectural and spiritual landscape. Upon his death, he bequeathed a monumental $10,000 legacy—a fortune at the time—to the Christian Church on Main Street, requesting that the funds support a grander structure featuring a distinct bell and memorial tower. His generosity financed the construction of a striking High Victorian Gothic building that still stands on Main Street today. The landmark church was officially dedicated on July 25, 1874, in a grand ceremony presided over by Lord Dufferin, the Governor General of Canada. Adding to the historical weight of the day, the event featured one of the earliest public performances of "The Maple Leaf Forever," forever linking the Wakefield name to both local heritage and early Canadian culture. From August 24 to September 13, visit the Take What You Need wall in Market Court and pick up your Season Ahead Passport. A major milestone was reached for families across northern York Region and southern Simcoe County. The provincial government has advanced the plan to redevelop Southlake Health’s Davis Drive campus and build a brand-new state-of-the-art acute care hospital in East Gwillimbury. Our government is making historic investments in Healthcare. This transformational two-site hospital network will strengthen access to modern, connected, high-quality care — closer to home for more than 250,000 residents. As your MPP, one of my commitments to our community has been to ensure the expansion of Southlake Health to accommodate our growing population. This commitment has come to fruition as we are delivering real progress: expanding capacity, reducing wait times, and continuing to develop world class care for generations to come. Southlake Health is a critical pillar of Newmarket-Aurora — and our government is ensuring it remains strong, innovative, and ready to meet the healthcare needs of our community members.
