• Movember is an annual event involving the growing of

• A reminder that at 2am on Sunday, November 5th, the clocks fall behind when Daylight Saving Time ends.

• On Remembrance Day we honour those who gave their lives to serve our country. Wear your poppy proudly during the Remembrance period, from the last Friday in October to the end of the day on November 11! Check out our Neighbourhood Events page for information about local Remembrance Day activities.

• World Kindness Day is on November 13th. This global

day promotes the importance of being kind to each other, to yourself and to the world. The purpose of this day is to help everyone understand that compassion for others is what binds us all together.

Artistica Ballroom Dance Studio Patrick, Anastasia, Kelly and Sarah Dancing is a universal language that can better connect a person to their mind and body, their partner, and their environment. Artistica Ballroom Dance Studio is a welcoming space with a team of instructors passionate about cultivating each individual student’s unique dance journey. Located in the South End of Aurora since 2016, our studio aims to be a safe, fun environment for anyone looking to incorporate ballroom dance into their lives, whether their goals are based in wellness, socialization, or all of the above! Both within and outside of their studio, Artistica’s commitment to supporting our community has been a huge priority since the day they opened. Just a few of the things you’ll catch their team doing throughout the town includes Aurora's “Magna Hoedown”, collecting annual donations in support of the Aurora Food Pantry, joining Inn from the Cold Newmarket for "The Coldest Night of the Year" fundraiser walk, and rocking the stage at the “Lip Sync Battle for Victim Services of York Region”, where they snatched the 1st place title in 2018! And of course, participating in “Dancing with the Easter Seals Stars” continues to be a highlight for Artistica year after year. Getting to know their Aurora/Newmarket neighbours and to date helping to raise over $700,000 for such an incredible organization, has been one of their greatest honours. “It’s been a privilege to bring our love of both dance and teaching to the Aurora area for the past 8 years. Not only are our Artistica instructors some of the best in Canada, but just like you, they all have inspiring, personal journeys that led them to dance. Holiday Gift Drive The countdown to the holidays has begun and Neighbourhood Network is ready to spread joy through their annual Holiday Gift Drive! Southlake Regional Hospital has Main Street Newmarket Roots The first venture towards establishing a hospital for northern York County (York County was then comprised of what is now York Region and Toronto) was made by Dr. Hutt at his residence on the east side of Main St., just south of the Christian (now Christian Baptist) Church. In 1922, Dr. Dales purchased Dr. Hutt’s property and opened a public hospital in his residence. Shortly after this he applied for, and obtained a charter, and appointed some of Newmarket’s most active and prominent citizens as its board directors. It was this charter that gave the organization the name “York County Hospital” and enabled it to receive financial assistance from the government. A Ladies’ Hospital Aid was established soon after. By 1923, however, York County Hospital was far too crowded and a committee was organized to investigate the possibility and opportunity of relocating to a larger site. Three different residences around Newmarket were chosen and an architect was hired to determine the most suitable site for a new hospital. In the end, the Cane Family residence at the south-east corner of Huron Street (now Davis Drive) and Prospect Street was chosen. An extensive fund-raising project was undertaken, the Cane House was purchased, and two additions were constructed to the residence. During the renovations to the residence, unfortunately, a short-circuit occurred and the original building was destroyed by fire.

A new structure was constructed in 1927. A 25-bed hospital whose small size gave it the affectionate name “Cottage Hospital”. As the county grew, so did the hospital. The Margaret Davis wing was added in 1945 and another addition was erected in 1956. This was followed by massive new structures being built to the east of the old hospital, finally taking the form of the current Southlake Regional Health Centre. The original “cottage hospital” was eventually demolished when the original front doors were incorporated into the interior of the new centre lobby at Southlake.

The 15th Annual Myeloma Canada March took place across Canada on September 24th. Team Newmarket gathered at Riverwalk Commons to start the march with a breakfast sandwich provided by The Irv Food Truck, then community leads Nic & Kristy Aloha, along with Mayor John Taylor, kicked off the event! This year in Canada the march raised over $730,000 and Team Newmarket was the 5th largest fundraising team in the country.

The CHATS Amazing Adventure was an “Amazing Race” style event where families, friends, businesses, and community groups gathered in team in search of various checkpoints around York Region and South Simcoe areas. The event was held on October 15th and began at the CHATS office in Aurora. 24 teams with 80 participants started the day at 9:30am and finished at Market Brewing in late afternoon concluding with food, awards and MB Co. beverages. The event raised over $22,000 for CHATS!

With proper supervision by a veterinarian, receiving my daily medication, and monitoring my blood work, I am able to live a happy fun filled life! I'm a playful, goofy, good boy and I don't let my medical condition slow me down at all.

I'm Camilla, a gentle and sweet girl. I walk nicely on the leash, listen to commands and am super intelligent. I am in need of a family that will help build my confidence and give me the life I have always deserved. I was surrendered to Dog Tales from a kennel, where I was left in deplorable conditions. Due to this, I have moderate hip dysplasia, some changes to my hip bones, some arthritis in my shoulders and an osteophyte in both shoulders. I'm currently on medication daily to help with the inflammation and pain, as well as supplements to help with my mobility.

Meow - My name is Scamper! I’m a 12 year old tabby cat. I love to be outside and relax in my territory, especially when the weather is nice! I’m a very happy cat and I nap all the time on warm blankets. I also love wet food! I'm very curious and I make sure to sniff any new thing that I see.

Woof! Hi, I'm Millie. I am a 3 year old golden doodle who likes playing fetch, swimming, off leash walks & meeting new friends! I dislike when you stop playing fetch with me though... and the sound of bubble wrap. What I love most is my mom and dad, as well as my new baby brother, Max!

MAYOR TAYLOR Think local, choose local, love local There are lots of ways to support and celebrate our community over the coming months. I encourage all who are able to join Newmarket’s veterans at the Remembrance service on November 11 to pay their respects and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The festive season kicks off with the annual Candlelight Parade and carol sing on Main Street, on November 17. This and the Santa Claus Parade the next day are great ways to get into the holiday spirit. The festive atmosphere downtown steps up even further on December 1 when the Winter Wonderland and Frozen Fridays light up the Riverwalk Commons. The end of the year is a great time to stroll through the downtown, and check out the unique shops and restaurants that give the area its character. As we celebrate the festive season, please think of those less fortunate. There are many food and toy drives and fundraisers throughout November and December that support residents in our community. Check in on your charity of choice, they’ll be happy for your support. The incredible sense of community in Newmarket and our vibrant local economy enable one another. As we head into the busiest shopping time of the year, please choose local. Not only will you find unique gifts; your spending will have a compounding impact on our hometown. We can all play a role in making this a magical time of year. Please think about spending your time and your money in ways that build a more inclusive, resilient, and prosperous Newmarket.

Sir Isaac Newton said, “what goes up, must come down” The gravity of the more recent interest rate environment, however, seems much more like we’re living space… Houston, we have a problem. THE GOOD NEWS The Bank of Canada held interest rates from further increase for the second time in a row (October 25th) as inflation shows continued signs of cooling. Benjamin Tal, chief economist for CIBC has been citing statistics and sentiments that it is very realistic to see inflation stabilize in the medium term which will allow for a continued decline of interest rates over the next 3-5 years. While it is unrealistic to expect interest rates in the 1%- 2% range again, it is realistic to stabilize in the 4%-5% range; a more typical interest rate range overall. Better days are surely ahead… The longer-term outlook (5-10 years) shows signs of a very promising housing market bringing buyers off the side-lines and stimulating action in the selling market. On October 22nd, MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy stopped in to meet with the team at the Newmarket Soccer Club and hear more about how a $150,000 Capital Grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) was used to rejuvenate the Club’s 13-year-old facility. The OTF grant was awarded in late 2022 and the resulting facility will give people in the community improved access to programs and events at the Centre for years to come.

8 individuals from the community practiced for 10 weeks with 4 dancing pros from Artistica Ballroom Dance Studio. They danced in front of over 300 neighbours on October 5th at the Royal Venetian Mansion and raised a record breaking $125,000 for Easter Seals Ontario.

MAYOR MRAKAS On September 20th, Mayor Tom Mrakas hosted the Town of Aurora Mayor's Charity Golf Classic at St. Andrews Valley Golf Club. The funds raised through the tournament were donated to local charities. Thank you to all that supported and sponsored this annual event!

As we approach Remembrance Day, it is a time to reflect, honour and show our gratitude to the men and women who sacrificed, served, fought and died for our freedom. It is also a time to pay tribute to the important and on-going role of those who serve our country through military service today. On Saturday, November 11, the Aurora Legion will host its annual Remembrance Day Parade and Ceremony. Everyone is welcome to attend. The parade will begin at 10:20 am at GW Williams High School and march south on Yonge Street to the Cenotaph for the service. As you may already know, Aurora has always had a proud military heritage and many of the lots that now make up Aurora were granted to Loyalist soldiers who had fought in the Revolutionary War. The first military unit raised here was the York Militia, for the War of 1812. Their name was later changed to York Rangers, followed by a (mostly) final name change in 1936, when the York Rangers amalgamated with a Toronto regiment to form the Queen's York Rangers who continue to operate in Aurora today. Since those early days, hundreds of Aurorans have volunteered to serve in defense of our land and values. They assisted in the Fenian Raids (1866), the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902), WWI, WW2, and the war in Afghanistan where they served in both support and front-line roles. The Queen's York Rangers have maintained their presence in Aurora throughout this time, calling the Armoury at Town Park their home until 2012 when they moved to Industrial Parkway South. As you drive or walk around Town this month, I encourage you to look for the Aurora Legion’s Veteran Banners that hang from the lampposts on Yonge Street in our historic downtown and along Wellington towards Bayview Avenue. What a wonderful way to continue to honour our veterans and share Aurora’s history. Lest we forget.

DAWN GALLAGHER MURPHY October marked the 25th anniversary of Agriculture Week in Ontario and with that the government’s Dine Ontario program to celebrate local food. Local participants included Ristorante Orsini, Sweet Dutchess and WickedEats. In 2022, Ontario's agri-food industry contributed $48.8 billion in GDP to the provincial economy (6.3% of total Ontario GDP) increasing 4.6% from 2021 and employs more than 836,000 people. It represents 10.8% of the province’s total labour force. Such an honour to announce investments for healthcare and emergency care services for York Region. The government is investing nearly $65 million in Public Health services this year to cover increased costs, including additional base funding of more than $4.9 million and one-time funding of more than $5.7 million. A seven per cent increase in land ambulance funding was announced, bringing the province’s total investment this year to over $50.4 million. Also, $2.4 million has been allocated for hiring nurses to help with offloading ambulance patients at hospital emergency departments, part of a $51 million three-year initiative for the Dedicated Offload Nurses Program. At Southlake Regional Health Centre I was pleased to be part of the unveiling of a new PET-CT Simulator scanner at the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre. Ontario invested more than $2.8 million to support the addition of York Regions first PET- CT scanner, ensuring world-class care to cancer patients closer to home. Partner

Run for Newmarket organized by Mercy 4 Mankind, a subsidiary of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) took place on October 1st at Fairy Lake. This year the funds raised through the walk benefited two local charities CHATS & York Region Food Network. Their goal is to support the local community and bring people together for a noble cause. With over 300 participants the second annual Run for Newmarket was a huge success!

My favourite place in the community is the Tom Taylor Trail. The town has done a great job in making a trail an awesome spot to get out into nature- especially in the warmer months. I often go out for walks, runs and bike rides! What is your favourite song, artist/group or genre of music That's a tough one! My most listened genre would have to be country music but sometimes nothing beats the oldies and classic rock. What is your favourite season (winter, spring, summer, fall), and why? I don’t have a favourite season and feel fortunate to live in a country that has all four seasons! We are very lucky to get to experience white Christmases and ski hills, scorching 30 degree summers on a dock, cozy sweaters on a crisp fall day and the excitement of the days of spring. What is your favourite drink? Nothing beats that first cup of coffee in the morning.

On October 13th, MPP for York-Simcoe Caroline Mulroney and MPP for Newmarket-Aurora Dawn Gallagher Murphy, joined King Mayor Steve Pellegrini and stopped by WaterStone Estate & Farms as Horses At Heart Therapeutic Equestrian celebrated students from Huron Heights High School PEAK program, funded in part by the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Students presented a musical ride demonstrating horseback riding skills learned in four lessons, accompanied by hand-walking helpers and volunteers.

On September 29th, MPP Caroline Mulroney met with the team at Ducks Unlimited Canada for a tour of the wetland habitat in the Holland Marsh. The Ontario government is providing over $1.8 million in funding to Ducks Unlimited Canada for 40 conservation projects to restore and enhance wetlands across the province, including one local project in Bradford West Gwillimbury. This funding will help restore local wetlands, which will improve water quality, help prevent flooding and build climate change resiliency. Abuse Hurts Champion of the Month Abuse Hurts happily names Maria Vitaro as their Champion of the Month for November. She is the owner/hairstylist at Crown Hair Lounge in Aurora and has been styling hair for the Delivering Hope Makeover Day clients at Abuse Hurts for the past few years. 100 Men WGAD started as a grassroots initiative across the globe. In 2016, Newmarket residents Mike Smith and Paul Lepage, along with their admin “glue” Margo Starr established a chapter in Newmarket/Aurora to help support local charities. This team has expanded over the years to include other skill sets as needed.

HERE’S HOW WE “GET THINGS DONE”

• At the beginning of the year, our members send $401 to the “100 Men Who Give a Damn” bank account (the $1 goes toward bank fees).

• Our meetings take place the first Thursdays of March, June, September, and

December. Members can attend or give their proxy to their “wingman,” who can vote on their behalf. • Members nominate charities who; are local to York Region, have a registered charity number and are able to issue tax receipts.
