Hi Neighbours,
Welcome to the March edition of the Neighbour Paper! A heartfelt thank you to our community partners and neighbours who help make each edition possible—we’re so grateful for your continued support and collaboration. With spring just around the corner, there’s plenty to look forward to in the month ahead. Here are a few highlights…
Every year since 1947, Easter Seals dedicates the month of March to increasing awareness of the experiences, challenges, and contributions of children and youth with physical disabilities in Ontario.
Holi is observed on sundown of March 3rd, ending at sundown on March 4th. Also called the festival of sharing and love, or the festival of colours, is a Hindu two day festival in the Spring.
International Women’s Day is March 8th. A day meant to advance equality with respect to sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity or expression through the inclusion of people of all genders, including women, in Canada’s economic, social, and political life.
March break is from the 16th to the 20th this year! Visit neighbourmedia.ca/neighbourevents to check out some of the fun things happening around the neighbourhood this week!
Get your green beer ready - St. Patrick’s Day is March 17th! The Spring Equinox (also known as the Vernal Equinox) falls on March 20th at 10:46am, marking the beginning of the Spring season in the Northern Hemisphere.
Also on March 20th, is Nowruz - aka Persian New Year! Celebrating the spring equinox, symbolizing renewal, nature's rebirth, and new beginnings, rooted in ancient Zoroastrian traditions.
March 26th is Purple Day, an international grassroots effort dedicated to increasing awareness about epilepsy worldwide. Show your support by wearing purple! Trans Day of Visibility is March 31st. An annual awareness day dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments of transgender and gender nonconforming people, while raising awareness of the work that still needs to be done to achieve trans justice.
For Marco Di Girolamo, the path to the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame wasn’t paved with easy wins; it was forged through hour-long bike rides from Maple to Sunnybrook for rugby practice because his family only had one car. It is this brand of grit—the "show up no matter what" mentality—that has defined Marco’s journey from a grade nine phys ed class to the global stage of the Rugby World Cup.
Marco’s international career is the stuff of legend. A former captain of the Canadian men’s rugby sevens team and a 2003 World Cup competitor who played every single minute of every game, he earned the title of Canada’s Player of the Year in 2004. Yet, despite the adrenaline of playing before 50,000 screaming fans at the Hong Kong Sevens, Marco remains strikingly humble, attributing much of his success to "luck" and the mentors who nudged him along the way.
"I don’t sit in front of you today without all the people I’ve met in my life," Marco says, reflecting on the coaches who saw potential in him when he was just a kid playing soccer and hockey.
Today, the discipline that fueled his rugby career powers his business in the electrical and construction fields. Marco views business as the ultimate "team sport," where leadership means being the first one on-site and the last to leave. He brings a unique philosophy to his work: "Treat everybody as if you’re going to your mother’s house." This standard of care has helped him build one of the most respected programs in the industry, specializing in human-centric automation that mimics natural light to improve well-being.

Beyond his professional and athletic achievements, Marco’s heart belongs to Aurora. Whether he’s coaching youth sports or shattering records for charity, his commitment to his neighbours is absolute. In a stunning display of community mobilization, Marco recently raised over $50,000 for Easter Seals, when he participated in the organization's Dancing with the Stars event —the highest individual total in the organization's local history. Furthermore, the following year, Marco played a key role in reaching the $10,000 fundraising goal of Danielle, an Easter Seals kid.
For Marco, it all comes back to a line from a favourite Bruce Springsteen song: “The door is open, but the ride ain’t free.” It’s a message he hopes to pass on to his children: that with hard work, daily discipline, and a heart for service, there are no limits to what can be built. #GoodNeighbour

At only 23-years-old, Aurora born Riley Allen has accomplished so much — overcoming childhood cancer, starting Riley Socks Apparel to inspire resilience and hope for cancer patients and survivors, and fundraising for missions close to her heart. This year, she’s got her sights set on another great accomplishment — raising $5,000 with her team for the Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake.

Riley was only 18 months old when diagnosed with DFSP (Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans), a rare form of cancer. She endured chemotherapy and a 12-hour long surgery where doctors reconstructed her leg after removing a large tumor. Riley feels strongly about supporting leading edge care close to home at Southlake Health through the Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake Southlake Health Foundation’s largest community fundraiser.
“I was born at Southlake, my family doctor is here, my mom, my stepdad, my best friend all have had amazing care at Southlake. I have so many people that have been positively impacted by Southlake, and I want to do what I can to support it.”
After completing a 10km run during her study year abroad, something her childhood doctors said wouldn’t be possible, Riley is eager to be back in her hometown and running alongside her team to raise critically-needed funds for the hospital that has given back so much to her friends and family.
Join Riley and hundreds of other amazing participants at this year’s Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake, happening Sunday, April 26. Register today at runforsouthlake.ca and help make this year the best yet!

This month’s ‘Awesome’ grant was awarded to the Ontario Teen Goodwill Ambassador, Manha and her sister Laiba from Stamp Out Stigma. They will be using the $1,000 cash to buy nutritious snacks for 4 Newmarket elementary schools to fuel kids and allow them to focus on their education rather than their hungry bellies.
Thanks to Vinces Market for hosting the presentation. If you are doing something to benefit youth in Newmarket, apply to the Awesome Foundation Newmarket today! www.awesomefoundation.org/ en/chapters/newmarket-ontario
A BIG thank you to the Awesome trustees!

On Pancake Tuesday, the community flipped, stacked, and served up smiles in support of Victim Services York Region. Wimpy's Newmarket gave back in a big way, donating 100% of the proceeds from every pancake sold to VSY. Helping serve nearly 400 pancakes were some fantastic celebrity servers, including MP Sandra Cobena, MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy, Mayor John Taylor, Deputy Mayor Tom Vegh, Councillor Grace Simon, along with VSY Board Chair Tony Cusimano and Vice Chair Rhonda Corsi. Big hearts, big stacks — thank you to everyone who made Pancake Tuesday such a sweet success! To learn more about VSY, visit victimservices-york.org

Let’s celebrate ourselves and each other—not just today, but every day. We are intelligent, creative, empathetic, and loving.

DAWN GALLAGHER MURPHY MPP
As we welcome March, I am proud to join our community in celebrating International Women’s Day. This month reminds us of the strength, leadership, and remarkable achievements of women here in Newmarket–Aurora, throughout our great province, and across Canada. I am grateful for the inspiring women who continue to shape Ontario and open doors for the next generation.

Last month, I had the pleasure of hosting my 3rd Annual Non-Profit Appreciation Event, where more than 40 local non-profit organizations joined us for an afternoon of recognition and gratitude. It was an honour to thank the individuals and teams who work tirelessly every day to make Newmarket–Aurora a better place to live, work, and raise a family. Their compassion and dedication are the backbone of our community.
I was also pleased to highlight the important work performed by Blue Door, made possible through support from our government via the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Blue Door’s Forward program for senior men is undergoing essential renovations thanks to an $87,300 Capital Grant. These upgrades will provide safer, more accessible spaces, enhanced outdoor areas, and vital infrastructure improvements that help residents regain stability and prepare for permanent housing. This investment ensures that seniors facing housing challenges have a secure and supportive environment—one that promotes dignity, independence, and hope. Blue Door’s work remains essential in York Region, where many senior residents continue to experience barriers to safe and affordable housing. As always, my o ce is here to support you. I look forward to continuing our work together as we continue to build a strong, caring, and connected Newmarket–Aurora.

On February 11th, Dawn Gallagher Murphy, MPP Newmarket—Aurora hosted a Non-Profit Appreciation event at The Lounge by The George celebrating the individuals and organizations who make our community stronger, kinder, and more vibrant each and every day. Whether bringing neighbours together through community events, delivering vital services at every stage of life, or supporting residents through their most di cult moments, the dedication of these organizations is truly extraordinary.

On February 5th, MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy met with representatives from Blue Door to learn more about the essential renovations happening at Forward, Blue Door’s transitional housing program for senior men thanks to receiving an $87,300 Capital grant from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) in 2025. Thanks to the OTF grant, senior residents will benefit from safer, more accessible entryways, enhanced outdoor spaces, and vital infrastructure upgrades that ensure a secure and supportive living environment. These upgrades will promote dignity and security, allowing residents to focus on their recovery, secure permanent housing, and successfully reintegrate into the community with confidence and stability.

Newmarket offers many ways to enjoy the longer warmer days ahead
It was great to see so many people at Ice Lounge on Main last month. In three short years, this event has redefined what a winter event in the GTA can be. It's amazing that residents and visitors alike have embraced this signature event and come out to enjoy winter in Newmarket’s downtown.

For me, Ice Lounge also marks the turning point of Winter. Enjoying a few days on Main Street, mostly outdoors, I’m keenly aware that the days are getting longer and the sun, when it’s out, is feeling warmer. Of course, spending time with neighbours, family, and friends on Main Street also puts me in mind of all the ways we’ll soon be coming together downtown. This includes soaking up the warmer seasons on a patio, at the Farmers’ Market, celebrating Canada Day, taking in a concert at the Music Series, and enjoying Summerfest on Main.
There is much to look forward to in Newmarket in the coming months. From organized sports for kids, such as soccer, baseball, and tennis, to pickup basketball and pickleball, Newmarket’s top-notch amenities make it easy to stay active outdoors. Kids can also enjoy the spray pads and the skate park. For those looking for a bit less excitement, there are more than 45 kms of trails in town, including the Mulock Multiuse Path, which will be completed this year, and there are more than 800 acres of parkland in Newmarket to enjoy. And of course, the highlight of the coming months will be the opening of Newmarket’s latest park, the 16-acre Mulock Park, which will include the Mulock House and AGO satellite gallery.
I hope to see you out in the community in the coming months.
St. John’s Parish in Newmarket was established as a mission in 1841. It wasn’t until significant immigration after 1847 that the idea was raised to erect a Roman Catholic Church in Newmarket. A small church was erected on the north side of Ontario St., just west of Main St. 1875 a new church was erected, (shown in picture) and soon after a separate school building. By the 1970’s the old church could not support the needs of the congregation and it was torn down in 1977. A new church was constructed, this time on the south side Ontario St. By the 1980’s Newmarket’s Catholic population warranted the construction of a new parish and St. Elizabeth Seton Church opened in 1991.

The 108 Health Promotion Association rang in the Year of the Horse while celebrating 10 incredible years of service, on February 8th! Co-hosted with the Newmarket Public Library, the event brought together members of the Chinese community and the broader communities of Newmarket, Aurora, and East Gwillimbury for a joyful celebration. This milestone marked a decade of dedicated volunteerism, community engagement, and health promotion, honouring the past while looking forward to a bright and prosperous year ahead. The 108 Health Promotion Association's main purpose is to promote seniors’ healthy living style physically, psychologically and spiritually; socially integrate seniors through group recreation; and improve seniors’ physical health.

I'm Toby! I was found after being hit by a car. I underwent spinal surgery to stabilize my back, and am now making steady progress through weekly rehabilitation sessions. I will eventually be fitted with a custom wheelchair, giving me the mobility and independence I need to navigate the world again. I'm a gentle soul, who loves being tucked snugly under a blanket for my naps, where I'll serenade you with my soft snoring. A household without children or overly energetic dogs would be best - somewhere quiet where I can feel secure and build my confidence. If you have the time, patience, and heart to help me write the next chapter of my incredible survival story, I'm ready to show you just how much love I have left to give.

Hi, I'm Millie. I'm a 2.5-year-old, which means I'm basically a grown-up... but still very much a puppy at heart. Roxy is my twin sister, but I am very much the boss! I take my job as a good girl seriouslyespecially when it comes to snacks, naps, and keeping a close eye on my people. I love long walks (short ones too), squeaky toys, and any opportunity to take food from my baby human! I'm an expert cuddler, a professional tail wagger, and a firm believer that couches are for dogs. I may act brave, but I'm really just a softie who wants belly rubs and reassurance that I'm the best dog ever (I am!). Life is pretty great, especially when it includes treats, sunshine, and being right by your side.

I'm Avery, a gentle soul that is deeply sensitive to energy and naturally drawn to calm, compassionate people. I am both blind and deaf, relying on touch and scent to feel safe and connected. Busy, noisy environments can be overwhelming for me, but when I find someone whose presence feels steady and kind, I blossom, becoming playful, goofy, cuddly, and full of warmth. I'm looking for a palliative or hospice-style home—one focused on comfort, routine, and emotional safety. Dog Tales will support my adopter with training guidance and ongoing support to help ensure my transition is as smooth and comforting as possible. I'm offering the chance to provide love at a time when it matters most.

Hello there - I'm Deaner, an 8 year old Guinea pig. I may be in my golden years, but I still act like a teenager. In this photo I was getting a check-up and I was quite the hit amongst the ladies! I am super social, affectionate and love light scratches behind my ears and on my cute little nose! I LOVE my humans and two fur brothers, often coming out of my cage to play! At around 8:30pm every night I start squealing to let my humans know that it’s time for TREATS; my favourite blend of carrots and romaine lettuce!
Hi, I'm Roxy. I'm Millie's twin sister, which means I look similar.. but let's be clear, I'm the fun one. I'm 2.5 years old and powered almost entirely by enthusiasm, curiosity, and a strong belief that everything is better when I'm involved. I love people, other dogs, and absolutely any situation where I might get attention. If something is happening, I should be there. If nothing is happening, I will make sure something happens. I'm equal parts sweet, goofy, and a little bit mischievous, with a tail that never seems to stop wagging. Life is exciting, the world is interesting, and I'm very happy to be in the middle of it all.

Hi!! We're Connie and Henk! We love to run around forests and fields on pack walks with our friends three times a week, unsuccessfully chase bunnies in the garden, and beg for our favourite snack – steamed broccoli. With no fur to speak of, neither of us are crazy about freezing temperatures, but we have winter coats to keep us warm on hikes and walks. Our mom takes such great care of us! We love her so much.

Optimist Day is celebrated throughout the world annually on the first Thursday of February. This is a day where the world can be an Optimist themselves in action, plus honouring Optimist Clubs and Members in their communities and worldwide for all they do year-round to promote efforts in bringing out the best in youth, communities, and ourselves. On February 5th, the Aurora Optimist Club raised the Optimist Flag at Aurora Town Park and the Newmarket Optimists raised their flag at the Peace Park.

Deciding when to buy or sell a home rarely comes down to headlines or national market predictions. At Key Advantage, our conversations with clients start in a different place: you.
One of the first questions we ask is, “Are you planning to stay put for a few years?” Time in the home often matters more than trying to perfectly time the market. Real estate is a long-term asset, and stability in your plans can outweigh short-term rate or price shifts. We also remind clients, “If rates drop later, you can refinance. If rents rise, you cannot undo that.” Waiting has a cost, too. Remaining in an expensive lease or outgrowing your space can mean missed opportunities to build equity or improve daily life. Ultimately, it is less about the market and more about your finances, lifestyle, and timeline. The best time to make a move is when the monthly payment, your savings, and your comfort level align, not when social media says conditions are “perfect.”
Right now, many buyers are noticing that real estate in York Region feels a bit like it is on sale. With less competition and more room to negotiate, those who already feel financially and personally ready may find this window presents a strong opportunity. That is why we focus on your numbers, not just national stats. We look at payment ranges, future plans, and risk tolerance. You do not need to rush, but you do not need to freeze either. Thoughtful, informed steps beat reactive decisions every time.
And remember, exploring does not equal committing. Touring homes or discussing selling scenarios simply gives you clarity. If it is a good time for you, that is what matters most. Key Advantage is always here as your resource in all things real estate.

The Winter Olympics represent a proud moment for Canadians and a special one for Newmarket–Aurora. We were cheering on Megan Oldham, who captured gold in freestyle skiing, and our own Connor McDavid, who achieved silver with Canada's men’s hockey team. Their discipline, preparation, and commitment to excellence inspire us all.

Those same principles matter at home, especially when it comes to managing our nation’s economy. Imagine an Olympic coach saying, “We don’t believe in weight classes. We don’t believe in training plans. We’ll just spend more and hope for gold.” No serious person would expect that team to succeed.
Food inflation is no mystery either. It happens when grocery chains face too little competition, government spending grows faster than productivity, trade disputes drag on unresolved and taxes pile up on farmers, processors, truckers, and retailers. Those costs don’t disappear. They show up every week at the checkout counter.
While the new Groceries & Essentials Benefit provides temporary relief for vulnerable Canadians, it is a short-term measure that comes with a significant cost. Real affordability requires lasting solutions: stronger competition in the grocery sector, responsible fiscal policy, and removing taxes that drive up food prices.
In addition, this program will cost $12.4 billion over six years. At a time of record deficits, introducing this credit risks exacerbating the very inflationary pressures that drove grocery prices up in the first place.
Inflation is the slow erosion of a family’s dignity. I will never stop fighting to make life affordable.

What is so fragile that saying its name breaks it? Silence.
What has a head and a tail but no body? A coin.
How can a man who shaves several times a day still sport a long beard? He’s a barber.
What can you catch but not throw? A cold.
What starts with T, ends with T, and has T in it? A teapot.
Ask this question all day long, but always get completely different answers, and yet all the answers will be correct. What is the question? What time is it?
What loses its head in the morning but gets it back at night? A pillow.

March has a way of bringing people together. As winter begins to wind down and the first signs of spring appear, we’re reminded that this season is about renewal, not just in nature, but in our communities as well.
As we mark International Women’s Day on March 8, we celebrate the women who shape our community every day, as entrepreneurs, caregivers, public servants, mentors, and advocates. Their leadership and determination have opened doors and expanded opportunities for future generations. As we celebrate their achievements, we also recommit ourselves to ensuring that every woman and girl has the chance to succeed and to lead.
And that spirit of pride continues with St. Patrick’s Day, which for many families, is a time to reflect on Irish roots, traditions, and the

enduring values of resilience and community. Days like this remind us that Canada’s strength lies in the stories, cultures, and contributions of people from every background.

Later in the month, many will gather to celebrate Nowruz, the Iranian New Year which marks the arrival of spring. Nowruz is a time of hope and renewal. But this year, it is also another meaningful opportunity to stand in solidarity with the people of Iran, who continue to inspire the world through their resolve toward a free and democratic Iran.
As we welcome the season ahead, may March inspire us to continue building a stronger, more resilient community together.
