Hi Neighbours, Welcome to June and another exciting edition of the Neighbour Paper! A heartfelt thank you to our amazing community partners and neighbours—your continued support is what makes each edition possible and so special to share. Let’s take a look at some things worth celebrating this month:

In June we commemorate National Indigenous History Month. During this month, take time to recognize the rich history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples across Canada.

For all the rosé lovers in the Neighbourhood, National Rosé Day is the second Saturday in June each yearmaking it June 13th this year. Cheers to that!

June is also Pride month, with the York Pride Parade happening on June 13th, on Main Street in Newmarket! Lining up nicely with National Rosé Day… which sounds like a perfect afternoon to us!

Father’s Day falls on Sunday, June 21st this year - sending lots of Neighbour love to all of the Dads out there. Summer Solstice will occur on June 21st, which means this is the longest day of the year and marks the o cial beginning of Summer! Make sure to enjoy the sunshine today.

June 21st is National Indigenous Peoples Day! A day recognizing and celebrating the cultures and contributions of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Indigenous peoples of Canada.

Christian Wehrli grew up in Switzerland as a free-spirited entrepreneur who hated having a boss. He built a successful vinyl import business, but his life shifted forever during a 1980 Canadian visit. Spotting a highway sign for Newmarket, he took the exit and instantly fell in love. Decades later, he moved there permanently to write a book about Don Ierullo, co-founder of Records on Wheels, and the Canadian music scene. He stayed, became a citizen, and still pinches himself every morning to make sure he’s not dreaming.

The next chapter of Christian's life was shaped by his sister, Esther Hirschi-Wehrli, a reserved Swiss kindergarten teacher who believed stories could open a child’s world and that reading was something worth gathering a community around. She was captivated when she came to visit Christian in his new homeland. During a visit, Esther wandered into the children’s section of the Newmarket Public Library and was utterly enchanted.

When Esther later became ill with cancer, she and Christian designed a children’s StoryWalk® together — a trail through Fairy Lake Park where illustrated pages of a picture fairy tale book are mounted along the path, turning a walk into a story unfolding step by step. Christian describes those months of collaboration as the most intense, the happiest, and the most heartbreaking of their lives. Esther left the world in 2021 with a deep, satisﬁed smile, before the ﬁrst walk could take place.

Determined to honour Esther, Christian carried the project forward. What began as a private tribute is now a beloved Newmarket tradition. In 2026, marking its third year, the initiative expanded through the Newmarket Public Library into four free StoryWalks across local parks each summer, freely accessible to families. This year’s featured book is Biindigen! Amik Says Welcome by Indigenous author Nancy Cooper— a tale of belonging perfect for a trail named for a woman who found hers.

The 2026 season o cially kicks off with the "Walk for Esther" Launch Party on Sunday, June 7, from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. at the Fairy Trail Park amphitheatre (520 Water Street). Admission is free, and families are welcome to come and make an afternoon of it. In poor weather, the celebration moves indoors to the Library. Proceeds from the initiative fund free books and programs for the library's children's department

Asked what Esther would say if she could see it all today — the children, the costumes, the growing tradition she inspired, Christian says, “She would smile all the way around her head—if only the ears weren’t in the way.” #GoodNeighbour

Allan Monk recently celebrated his 95th birthday! Allan and his family moved to Newmarket in 1958. He and his wife, Mary, raised their family here. He has 4 children, 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He worked for SPAR Aerospace (Special Products & Applied Research) and contributed to building The Canadarm for NASA. The Able Network’s annual walk on May 3rd was nothing short of inspiring! This year, participants helped raise a record-breaking $100,000 in support of individuals with Intellectual Disabilities — a powerful reminder of what a caring community can accomplish together. Starting at Aurora Town Square, the streets of downtown Aurora were ﬁlled with energy, positivity, and a sea of Able Network’s signature blue shirts proudly declaring: “We Are Able.” The Able Network is a community -based program dedicated to creating meaningful, inclusive work and recreation opportunities for adults with Intellectual Disabilities in natural job and community settings. What an incredible celebration of inclusion, empowerment, and community spirit!

On May 14th at Stonehaven Banquet Hall, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of 100+ Men Who Give a Damn - Newmarket/Aurora! What began as a small, passionate group has now grown to an inspiring 180 members, all united by a shared commitment to giving back. During the anniversary evening, the group proudly awarded the Newmarket Food Pantry with more than $15,000 in support, continuing their powerful tradition of community impact. A heartfelt congratulations to Mike and Paul, whose vision sparked this remarkable journey 10 years ago and has since grown into a lasting legacy of kindness and community support. Here’s to 10 years of impact—and cheers to many more ahead!

CHATS - Community & Home Assistance to Seniors is proud to announce the return of its annual Swing for Seniors Golf Tournament, taking place on Monday, July 6, 2026 at Lebovic Golf Club in Aurora, in support of respite care for seniors.

This signature fundraising event supports the ongoing operations of CIBPA Place, York Region’s ﬁrst not-for-proﬁt residential respite care home. CIBPA Place provides short-term, 24/7 care for seniors, including those living with dementia, in a safe, comfortable, and home-like environment, while offering caregivers the essential opportunity to rest and recharge.

Participants will enjoy a full day of golf on one of the region’s premier courses, including 18 holes with cart, a hot breakfast, on-course food and refreshments, and a post-round dinner. The tournament brings together community members, local businesses, and supporters for a meaningful day of connection, generosity, and fun.

Funds raised through Swing for Seniors will directly support the delivery of compassionate, high-quality care and help ensure seniors can continue to live with dignity while receiving the support they need.

The 4th Annual Bubbles & Smiles – A Taste of Italy, in support of CHATS (Community & Home Assistance to Seniors), transformed EVNTMRKT in Newmarket into a beautiful Italian escape ﬁlled with ﬂavour, laughter, and community spirit. Guests were transported straight to Italy while exploring the beautifully curated marketplace, sipping bubbly, and indulging in delicious food! From sweet treats to savoury bites, every detail captured the warmth, charm, and joy of an authentic Italian celebration.

Mother’s Day at Upper Canada Mall was a truly special celebration dedicated to honouring moms. Guests were treated to an inspiring gifting experience featuring beloved on-site brands including MAC Cosmetics, L’Occitane en Provence, Lush, and Flight Centre—perfect for ﬁnding something thoughtful for every kind of mom. Community & Home Assistance to Seniors

June at Upper Canada: Community, Summer Moments & New Experiences

This June, Upper Canada is welcoming the season with experiences centred around community connection, local partnerships and family-friendly fun.

Throughout Pride Month , visitors can take part in A Path to Pride, located in Market Court, an interactive installation rooted in allyship, inclusivity, and support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Guests are invited to walk through a rainbow pathway leading to a heart installation where ribbons can be added as symbols f support. For every ribbon tied, Upper Canada will donate $1to PFLAG York Region, with the installation growing over the month as a visual reﬂection of community support and collective impact.

Running June 11–21, Game Day for Dad brings playful competition to the centre with colourful game stations inspired by di erent dad personalities. Located on the upper level near Guest Experience, families can participate for a chance to win prizes while supporting an important cause — with all proceeds beneﬁting Victim Services of York Region.

Beginning June 22, Market & Co. will welcome a new Summer Gallery Wall, created in partnership with the Newmarket Group of Artists. Recent openings include Haight & Ashbury, bringing contemporary menswear and elevated tailoring to the lower level; FOX, o ering casual fashion for the whole family; and Firehouse Subs, now serving signature hot subs in Market & Co. while supporting local ﬁrst responders through the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation. Happy Seniors Month

The Government of Ontario is supporting active living for older adults with an annual investment of over $150,000 through the Seniors Active Living Centres Program, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. The government is also providing additional support through the Seniors Community Grant, Investing over $50,000 in local partners such as the Aurora Philosophy Institute and the Newmarket Public Library. These investments help deliver programs that keep older adults engaged, connected, and active in our community.

As we welcome the month of June and the energy of a new season, I am pleased to share important updates that continue to strengthen and support our community here in Newmarket–Aurora.

Last month, I was proud to announce a major expansion of primary care in our community. Our government is investing more than $2,058,000 to connect over 4,200 residents to a primary care provider through the Southlake Academic Family Health Team, in partnership with the North York South Simcoe Ontario Health Team. Combined with last September’s expansion, this brings the total number of residents newly connected to primary care to over 6,500. This progress is part of our

We also celebrated an exciting milestone for families in Aurora with the o cial opening of the newly rebuilt Dr. G.W. Williams Secondary School.

Supported by more than $67 million from our government's announcement two years ago, the new building has been offering students a state-of-the-art learning environment. And to expand and meet the needs of our growing community, I was also pleased to announce an additional $8.8 million to create 253 new student spaces.

June is also Seniors' Month in Ontario, and I am delighted to invite all seniors to my Third Annual Seniors’ Expo on June 5th, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at

I'm Macy! I spent ﬁve years loyally guarding a shop yard and living outside, and now it is ﬁnally my turn to be looked after. I am a special needs girl who requires a little extra help getting around. I am walked with a Help Em Up harness to support my backend, and wear boots on my back paws to protect them from injury. For my longer and more adventurous outings, I have taken to a wheelchair like an absolute champ. I'm looking for a family that is home often and able to give me the attentive care I need. My condition requires frequent potty breaks throughout the day and I can have accidents, so patience and understanding are a must.

I'm Olive! After spending 7 years with a family, I was returned through absolutely no fault of my own. I'm a sensitive soul who has been through more than my share of uncertainty. I startle easily and carry a quiet nervousness that asks for patience and understanding. But for the person willing to earn my trust, the reward is extraordinary. I would thrive in a calm, relaxed household (without young children) where the pace of life matches my gentle spirit. I can also share a home with other dogs, as long as they are easygoing and keep things mellow. I just need a quiet place to ﬁnally feel safe, and my person to have a big heart. I'm Looey, affectionately known as “The Fat Potato”. I'm the Playter family’s newest addition and a full-time professional chaos potato. I love food, cuddles, zoomies, and inserting myself into any situation where someone else is receiving attention. If there is a treat involved, I suddenly become a highly trained genius. My athletic career includes dramatic jumps, surprise wipeouts, and occasionally getting stuck on my back like a turtle. My hobbies include annoying my brother Lawrence, nonstop zoomies, demanding cuddles, falling over with ﬂair, and making the entire family laugh until they can’t breathe!

Hi, I'm Birdie the Springer Spaniel! I am happiest off-leash in the ﬁelds chasing birds. I also love to go swimming and am SO happy that swimming season is back! Especially now that we live so close to the water. I am the sweetest, most loving and friendly doggo and really wish my parents would get me a friend.

A bear brought me cookies the other day. More precisely, Neighbour Media’s own Lynnette Lanning dressed in a teddy bear costume delivered cookies that I had ordered to support the Tim Hortons Smile Cookie Campaign.

While the costume certainly stood out, it was her promoting, selling, and then personally delivering dozens and dozens of cookies to help raise money for Victim Services of York Region that was truly impressive.

From April 26th - May 3rd, the Newmarket and East Gwillimbury community came together in such a meaningful and heartfelt way! Every Smile Cookie purchased was more than just a sweet treat—it was an act of kindness, care, and compassion for individuals and families across York Region. With sincere appreciation to Tim Hortons and to everyone who bought a cookie, shared a post, or helped spread the word, thank you. Your generosity and support made a real difference. Because of you, more than $60,000 was raised to support Victim Services of York Region, helping ensure they can continue to be there for people when they need it most.

A new hospital is being built in Northern York Region! Ontario is investing $10 million to advance plans for a new acute care hospital in East Gwillimbury as well as the redevelopment of Southlake Health’s existing hospital in Newmarket. This investment will help connect more than 250,000 people across northern York Region and southern Simcoe County to more convenient care close to home. The new acute care hospital is planned to include: expanded acute and post-acute car, increased inpatient capacity, new Emergency department with diagnostic imaging and upgraded infection and control measures. The current facility will be renovated and modernized: more inpatient beds and expanded emergency capacity, supports more patients and programs. Amazing news for our neighbours!

Happy Pride & Italian Heritage Month, Aurora!

Every year, I’m honoured to proclaim June as Pride Month in the Town of Aurora, celebrating what truly makes our community special—its people. Aurora thrives because of its diversity, and Pride Month serves as a powerful reminder of the strength that comes from unity, acceptance, and mutual respect.

At a time when division can feel more present than ever, Pride Month offers us the opportunity to come together, uplift one another, and celebrate love in all its forms. The journey toward inclusivity never stops, and this month stands as both a celebration of progress and a recognition of the challenges still faced by members of the LGBTQ2S+ community.

This month, we’ll proudly raise the Pride Flag at Town Hall—a symbol of love, respect, and belonging. Then, on June 13, I’ll be marching alongside Council and Town staff in the annual York Pride Parade in Newmarket—a highlight of the year that brings joy, connection, and plenty of colour! Keep an eye out for our Bylaw vehicle in full rainbow mode, rolling through town in celebration. And this year, we also hosted our 2nd annual Aurora Pride Festival at Town Square! A heartfelt thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate this new tradition.

The Town is also proud to proclaim June as Italian Heritage Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the rich cultural contributions of the Italian community to our shared history and identity. In honour of this occasion, we warmly invite everyone in our community to join us for a special ﬂag raising ceremony at Aurora Town Square on Monday, June 1, at 7 p.m. Let’s come together to show our appreciation and support for Italian heritage and the vibrant traditions that continue to enrich our town.

As summer approaches and our nation prepares to welcome the world for the FIFA World Cup, we are reminded what it means to be Canadian. Being one of the host nations for an event of this magnitude is an incredible opportunity to welcome thousands of visitors from around the world and showcase the very best our country has to offer. Canada is a nation of backyard hockey rinks, but also of snow-covered soccer ﬁelds where young athletes dream big and play with passion.

Our soccer players have worked tirelessly to represent our country with pride, determination, and heart. To host a tournament that captures the attention of nearly 5 billion people worldwide is truly extraordinary. In other words, throughout this month, Canada will stand in the global spotlight sharing the culture, energy, and spirit that deﬁne our country.

That is why I would like to invite you and your family to join the Newmarket Soccer Club, the Town of Newmarket, and me at the Ray Twinney Community Centre on Friday, June 12 at 3:00 p.m. to watch Canada’s opening World Cup match. It will be a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together and cheer on a Canadian team that is increasingly capturing the hearts of people across the country.

This tournament is an opportunity to show the world that Canada is not only a winter sports nation. We are a country capable of dreaming bigger, reaching farther, and succeeding in every arena we choose.

It was a truly inspiring day at the Neighbour Media o ce, welcoming exceptional young leaders applying for the ParlAmericas Youth Delegate opportunity. MP Sandra Cobena, alongside Lynnette Lanning and Michael Waddington, had the honour of interviewing the ﬁnal candidates both in person and virtually. Congratulations to Mohammad on being selected as this year’s representative. On May 20th, he travelled to Ottawa to take part in the Canadian Youth Delegation at the ParlAmericas session, proudly representing his peers and contributing to meaningful dialogue at a national level alongside ParlAmericas.

Rose of Sharon Services for Young Mothers hosted a beautiful Mother’s Day celebration on May 8th, honouring an incredible group of moms and moms-to-be in our community. Families gathered for an uplifting afternoon centred on connection, care, and celebration. Mothers were treated to a restorative experience featuring yoga, journaling, professional family portraits, ra e prizes, a shared lunch, cake, and thoughtfully prepared gift bags, while staff and volunteers lovingly supported and cared for the little ones throughout the event. A heartfelt thank you to MP Sandra Cobena for joining the celebration and helping make the day even more special by sharing roses and contributing a beautiful cake for everyone to enjoy.

2026 was another incredible year of the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride in Newmarket! Thank you to the riders, donors, volunteers, and supporters, who showed up on May 17th, spread awareness, and helped raise an incredible $22,114 for men’s mental health and prostate cancer research. This was the 4th year hosting the ride in Newmarket, and together we have now raised a total of $68,052.65 for men’s health initiatives, through the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride.

It was truly an inspiring morning at the Girls Inc. EmpowerHer Breakfast at EVENTMRKT! An elegant afternoon of tea, treats, and history was served at the Elman W. Campbell Museum’s High Tea fundraiser held at Old Town Hall. Dear Residents of York-Simcoe,

I informed Premier Ford of my decision to resign from Cabinet and from my seat in the Ontario Legislature, effective Friday, June 5.

Serving as your Member of Provincial Parliament for York-Simcoe and as a member of the Ontario government for the past eight years has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. It is not a decision I have made lightly.

Two years ago, I lost my father. Last year, my husband Andrew and I became empty nesters. These are the kinds of moments that clarify what matters. Together, they have led me to the conclusion that now is the right time to step back from elected life and begin a new chapter, one I am genuinely excited about.

Thank you for your trust. When I ﬁrst put my name forward in 2017, I made you a simple promise: to listen, to care, and to stand up for you. I have tried to honour that promise every single day.

I am proud of what we accomplished together: building the Bradford Bypass, the protection of the North Gwillimbury Forest, safeguarding Lake Simcoe from additional wastewater while securing a new phosphorus reduction facility and advancing the new acute care hospital for Southlake Health in East Gwillimbury. None of it happened by accident. It happened because you were engaged, you were vocal, and you held me accountable.

To the Mayors and Councils across York-Simcoe, thank you for your partnership and your friendship. And to the farmers of the Holland Marsh: you are among the most hardworking, innovative, and dedicated people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. My father used to say that Canada is a country of small towns and big dreams. York-Simcoe is proof of that every day.

To Premier Ford - It has been an honour to serve in your Cabinet. Through the pandemic, your steady leadership gave Ontarians confidence when they needed it most. When trade pressures threatened our economy and our workers, you stood firm. I am proud to have worked with you on a number of files, including delivering a historic transit deal with the federal government for the City of Toronto and Region of York, moving forward with critical highway and transit infrastructure across the province, establishing Justice Centres in Ontario, achieving historic advancements for Ontario's Francophone community and providing steady fiscal stewardship through a period of significant economic uncertainty. Thank you for your trust, your friendship, and your unwavering commitment to this province. And keep working on your French. I know you can do it!

To Ontario's Francophone community - It has been a privilege to work alongside you. From establishing a Francophone university to modernizing the French Language Services Act, and so much in between, we accomplished things that will endure. Ontario's Francophone community is not a constituency to be managed. It is a vital, vibrant part of who we are as a province and as a country. There is an old line in politics that the worst day in elected life is better than the best day outside of it. I'm not sure that's true, but I do know that I will miss the people I have worked with over the past eight years more than you know. The people I have worked alongside, including more than a few friends on the opposition benches, have made me a better person. The energy of Queen's Park is one I hope I will carry with me forever.

Theodore Roosevelt said it best: "Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing."

Happy 105th Birthday to Bill, a truly remarkable Aurora resident! Neighbour Media was honoured to be invited to a special gathering of a longtime coffee group that has been meeting for an incredible 35 years in various locations throughout Oak Ridges and Aurora. In recent years, their regular meeting spot has become the McDonald’s on Allaura Drive. Bill, one of the founding members of the group and still proudly living independently in his own home, celebrated this amazing milestone birthday on April 29th surrounded by friendship, laughter, and decades of memories. Cheers to 105 years of wisdom, community, and an extraordinary life well lived!

The ﬁrst-ever Newmarket Steps for Life event took place on May 2nd, along the beautiful paths of Fairy Lake. Held in conjunction with the National Day of Mourning, Threads of Life / Steps for Life raises awareness, support, and funding for individuals and families affected by serious workplace injuries, occupational illnesses, and workplace fatalities. The community showed incredible support, with more than 180 participants coming together to walk in remembrance, solidarity, and hope. Thanks to their generosity, the Newmarket event raised over $25,000 locally, contributing to more than $1 million raised across Canada. An inspiring reminder of the power of community, compassion, and the importance of supporting those whose lives have been forever changed by workplace tragedy.

Aurora Public Library was pleased to announce that the 2026 Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign raised $33,882.71 in support of library collections, programs, and services. The funds will help strengthen the library’s ability to serve as a vibrant community hub for learning, creativity, and connection for people of all ages.

Community, Connection, and Giving Back

Spring kept us on our toes with a lineup of exciting community events! As April ended, we laced up our sneakers and hit the pavement for the 5k Walk for the ABLE Network. Throughout the month of May, we also proudly participated in and fundraised for the Sporting Life 10K in support of Campﬁre Circle, helping raise funds for children and families affected by cancer and serious illness. To round out the month, Jennifer, Chris, and Kennedy attended the Aurora Chamber Women’s Summit, spending the day surrounded by inspiring, passionate, and driven women from across our community. We are always grateful for opportunities to connect, give back, and support initiatives that make a meaningful impact.

It may have been a chilly start, but on May 2nd the Newmarket Farmers' Market opened for the first time in 2026, with plenty of warm smiles and community spirit Fresh finds, friendly faces, and that classic market buzz are back for the season! Stop by every Saturday from 8am – 1pm at Riverwalk Commons and soak in the sights, flavours, and local goodness.

What an incredible and empowering day at the Aurora Chamber of Commerce Women’s Summit. I wanted to connect as we head into summer and all the great opportunities June offers to reﬂect on and celebrate culture, heritage, family, and community.

June marks National Indigenous History Month. And on June 21, National Indigenous Peoples Day is a meaningful opportunity to recognize and reﬂect on the rich cultures and contributions of Indigenous peoples across this province and country.

June also marks Pride Month, and I know many people will be taking part in local celebrations and highlighting the importance of ensuring everyone in the community feels respected and supported.

Minister Michael Parsa announced that the Ontario government is introducing legislative changes to strengthen protections for children in private and international adoptions by enhancing oversight of the adoption process, creating new compliance and enforcement tools and establishing better safeguards to prevent bad actors from entering the system. Together, these measures will protect the well-being of children and help to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality adoption services across the province. Each year, there are approximately 130 private domestic and international adoptions in Ontario that are arranged by licensed agencies or individuals outside of a children’s aid society. If passed, the legislation would strengthen Ontario’s private and international adoption system so that the oversight of these adoptions remains effective and addresses rising concerns around illicit practices.

Victim Services of York Region participated in the 4th Annual York Region Anti-Human Tra cking Conference at Seneca College King Campus, On May 11th. It brought together community partners, service providers, and advocates for important conversations around prevention, support, education, and collaboration. The Newmarket Canal

At the beginning of the twentieth century the Laurier government initiated on an aggressive project to connect Newmarket to Lake Simcoe with a canal, thereby linking our town to the Trent-Severn canal system. The idea was formally initiated by Sir William Mulock, MP in 1904. The project had mass appeal for importing and exporting goods and avoiding expensive railway fees. Three locks were constructed at Holland Landing, Rogers’ Reservoir and just north of the old Davis Tannery. Three dams, a large turning basin at Huron St. and a swing bridge at Green Lane were all part of the massive project. The project ran signiﬁcantly over budget and began to experience much political opposition. With the change in government in 1911 the project was cancelled. Today we still see the surviving architecture from the canal known as “Mulock’s Folly”, a signiﬁcant reminder of a project symbolic of the time.

On May 3rd, the Hope House Community Hospice High Tea gathered our community in a truly gracious and meaningful celebration. Hope House continues to provide extraordinary care and unwavering support to individuals and families facing life-limiting illness, offering comfort, dignity, and deep human connection through its hospice and bereavement services. Thank you to the devoted staff, volunteers, and supporters whose compassion and commitment make this essential work possible. It was genuinely uplifting to witness so many come together in support of a cause that touches so many lives with such tenderness.

Neighbour Media was thrilled to join Mayor Mrakas and the team from Global News bright and early at the McDonald’s on Allaura Boulevard in Aurora for a very McHappy Day celebration. At the McDonalds at Yonge & Eagle Street in Newmarket, Mayor Taylor, Councillors Morrison and Bisanz delivered smiles at the drive thru window and at the order counter.

Every street sign tells a story. Some honour community builders, others remember trailblazers, and many quietly preserve local history we pass by every day. This page is dedicated to uncovering the people behind those names and the legacies they left in our neighbourhoods. Let’s meet the neighbours behind the names.

Catherine Avenue

Catherine Avenue is a street that points to some prominent early residents of Aurora. In the 1830s and 40s, the land surrounding Yonge and Wellington was known as Machell’s Corners, named after Richard Machell who owned 3 of the 4 properties. His rival, of sorts, was Charles Doan, whose early life took him from his childhood in the Quaker-adjacent community in Sharon, to the gaol (jail) in Toronto for participation in the 1837 Upper Canada Rebellion. Within 8 years of his release, he had risen in esteem and was appointed postmaster of Whitchurch.

From that role, he was instrumental in the naming of Aurora. Charles lived and did his work out of Castle Doan, an ironically- named simple saltbox-style home (said to have been the earliest home in all of York County) on Yonge Street, just behind Lions Parkette. Following the death of his ﬁrst wife Mary Willson, Charles married her cousin Catherine Willson, and the small track that led past their house was named for her. Their simple home, known almost ironically as Castle Doan, was demolished in 1981.

Alvin Pegg Drive | Pegg's Crescent

Alvin Pegg was a respected farmer, community member, and longtime resident whose name lives on through Pegg's Crescent and Alvin Pegg Drive in East Gwillimbury. The Pegg family played an important role in the area’s agricultural history, contributing to the growth and development of the community through generations of farming and local involvement.

Known for their strong ties to the land and dedication to community life, the Pegg family were among the many early residents who helped shape East Gwillimbury into the thriving town it is today. Alvin Pegg became well known within the community for his hard work, neighbourly spirit, and commitment to preserving the values of rural life during a time of growth and change across the region.

Today, the naming of Pegg’s Crescent and Alvin Pegg Drive serves as a lasting tribute to the Pegg family’s legacy and their contributions to the local community. These street names help preserve an important piece of East Gwillimbury’s history while recognizing the families who helped build and support the town over the years.

Doak Lane

Drew Doak (1933–1979) was an accountant, realtor, and advocate for the Town of Newmarket. He served on Town Council from 1964-1966 before becoming Mayor from 1967-1968. During his time in municipal leadership, Drew was known for his commitment to helping Newmarket grow while maintaining a strong sense of community connection. In 1979, the Town honoured him as Citizen of the Year.

Drew devoted much of his time to supporting local organizations and youth initiatives. He was especially passionate about minor sports and played an important role in encouraging opportunities for young athletes in the community. His dedication to volunteerism also led him to serve as president of the Newmarket Lions Club, where he worked alongside fellow volunteers to support local causes and charitable efforts. Drew’s impact on the community was widely recognized and deeply appreciated. Drew Doak Park was also named in his honour, as a tribute to his years of service and dedication to the town.

More than 1800 runners and walkers took to Davis Drive in the early morning of April 26th, as the spring sunshine emerged on the largest Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake in history. With 133 teams, the event crossed an incredible milestone, raising over $520,000 in support of critical needs across Southlake – the most ever raised since the event’s inception 24 years ago. The 2026 event challenged participants in a variety of fundraising categories to be ‘Top of the Leaderboard’. With fundraising o cially closed, winners of the 2026 Fundraising Challenges awards are: School Challenge Cup – Aurora Montessori School, Southlake Family Team Challenge – Cancer Centre Cruisers, Mayor’s Challenge – Town of Newmarket, Community Friends and Family Challenge – Egan Family Foundation, Corporate and Business Challenge – Team JFG, Community Spirit Award – Town of Aurora.

The Joe Persechini Charity Midway lit up Upper Canada Mall the weekend of May 8th with all the sights, sounds, and thrills of a classic funfair. From colourful rides spinning high into the sky to lively carnival games and plenty of laughter, the energy was non-stop and full of joy. Best of all, every ticket and every game played helped support Easter Seals, turning a day of fun into something truly meaningful. It was the perfect mix of thrills, smiles, and community spirit—just the way a carnival should be!

The Town of East Gwillimbury came together to celebrate Earth Week with a shared commitment to protecting the environment and creating a greener future for the community. The day began with a meaningful ﬂag-raising and smudging ceremony, grounding attendees in reﬂection, gratitude, and respect for the land and one another. Staff then rolled up their sleeves for a community clean-up around the Civic Centre, showing that caring for our planet starts with local action. Earth Week is a powerful reminder that even the smallest actions can grow into meaningful change when a community comes together with purpose and care for the world around us.

At its heart, York Pride champions a thriving 2SLGBTQ+ community built on respect, education, and authentic connection — making it one of the most inclusive and community-driven festivals in the province.

Our mission is to grow a vibrant network of events and programs that inspire positive change and foster a sense of belonging across York Region's nine municipalities. We strive to dispel hate and misconceptions through engaging in educational activities and collaborating with friends and allies. We aim to create spaces to improve the quality of life for residents and visitors to ensure queer individuals can safely express themselves, celebrate diversity, and have fun!

York Pride Festival 2026

York Pride is now Ontario’s 5th largest Pride festival — just behind Toronto and Ottawa, and closely aligned with Windsor-Essex and Kingston. 1.2 million people within nine cities and towns. Our diverse communities speak over 120 languages, with an estimated 120,000 2SLGBTQ+residents.

In 2025, we celebrated our 25th anniversary, with over 35,500 attendees across a vibrant weekend of celebration. The festival features dedicated zones for families, youth, adults 19+, and seniors, creating space for everyone to feel seen and included.

Powerful conversations, new connections, big ideas, and amazing sessions were brought together by a room of incredible business owners, leaders, and entrepreneurs at the Central York Chamber's SHIFT26! It was a special reminder of what can happen when our business community comes together. The summit focused on challenging conventional thinking and encouraging meaningful conversations through sessions on market trends, talent attraction and retention, strategy, and approaches to reaching customers and supporting business growth. With more than 35 B2B tradeshow booths, valuable networking opportunities, the event created space for thoughtful dialogue and meaningful connections across the business community.

Congratulations to Nadia Hansen who was this month’s Awesome Foundation winner of $1000 cash, for her awesome initiative! Nadia is creating a weekly series of workshops ‘Campaign Ready: Youth Political Leadership Lab’. This will equip participants with the non-partisan knowledge & skills to engage meaningfully in their community and local democratic processes. MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy was at the Marquee Theatrical Productions’ opening night of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ to celebrate the $90,000 Seed grant that the non-proﬁt group received late last year from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). The OTF grant is being used by Marquee Theatrical Productions to pilot new programs and enhance existing ones to strengthen accessibility, inclusion, and community impact through diverse, intergenerational arts opportunities. The grant is helping with some sta ng costs for a Production Coordinator, as well as fees for a music director, music theory instructor, ASL interpreters and a videographer.
