Milton Hart’s life story is defined by movement—across continents, disciplines, and generations—guided by an unwavering commitment to excellence, service, and leadership. An Olympian, educator, military officer, and community advocate, Milton has built a legacy that extends far beyond any single arena. Born in Jamaica, Milton first captured international attention as a member of the Jamaican bobsled team, representing his country at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France. Competing on one of the world’s biggest stages required discipline, resilience, and courage—qualities that would continue to shape his path long after the Olympic flame was extinguished. Following the Games, Milton migrated to Canada, where his athletic pursuits continued at York University. As a standout in track and field, he earned accolades including Most Valuable Athlete and Mayor’s Exemplary Athlete of the Year. These honours reflected not only his physical talent, but also his leadership and sportsmanship—traits that would soon carry over into other aspects of his life. Alongside athletics, Milton dedicated 15 years to military service, serving in both the Jamaican and Canadian armies. Rising to the rank of Lieutenant, he ultimately took on the role of Platoon Commander in the Canadian military. His service demanded strategic thinking, accountability, and the ability to lead under pressure—skills that would later define his work in education and community leadership. Today, Milton continues to shape lives through education. He serves as a Vice Principal with the York Region District School Board and as a Professor of English at Seneca College. In classrooms and corridors alike, he is known for mentoring students, fostering critical thinking, and championing lifelong learning. His leadership style reflects the same discipline and dedication that marked his athletic and military careers. Milton’s passion for sport remains undiminished. In 2023, he earned the title of Canadian 100-metre Masters Champion at the Canadian Masters Championship in British Columbia, proving that excellence knows no age limit. In recognition of his enduring contributions, Milton was inducted into the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame in 2024. A resident of Aurora for 21 years, he continues to give back as Sports Director of the St. George’s College Alumni Association (Toronto Chapter) and Chair of the Aurora Black Caucus, advocating for inclusion and representation. From the Olympic track to the classroom and the community, Milton Hart’s journey is a powerful testament to perseverance, purpose, and service—leaving a lasting impact wherever he leads. #GoodNeighbour

On December 11th Community Living Central York kicked off the season with our annual holiday dinner and dance with over 250 supported individuals and their families! Building Our Community Together 2025 Update from MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy As we begin 2026, I would like to take a moment to reflect on some of the highlights of 2025—and most importantly, to thank you for re-electing me and placing your trust in me for another provincial mandate. It is my greatest honour to represent the people of Newmarket–Aurora, and I remain deeply grateful every day for the opportunity to serve this incredible community. This Year in Review highlights the meaningful progress we made together in 2025 and the results delivered through strong advocacy and collaboration. In 2025, our community came together in meaningful and inspiring ways. Two major annual events once again brought Newmarket–Aurora closer: the second annual Seniors’ Expo, which recognized and supported our seniors through educational sessions and connections with local service providers, and the fourth annual Community BBQ, where families gathered to enjoy great food and celebrate the vibrant spirit of our riding. Throughout the year, I was also proud to take part in many cultural and community celebrations, including Chinese New Year, Black History Month, Holi Festival, York Pride, Emancipation Day, Run for Southlake, Iftar Dinner, and Rosh Hashanah. I had the privilege of visiting local businesses, hosting skilled trades roundtables, and participating in discussions on multiculturalism with community leaders and the Minister of Citizenship and Multiculturalism—ensuring local voices continue to be heard at Queen’s Park.
Advocacy for the needs of our community delivered significant investments to Newmarket–Aurora in 2025. More than $46 million was directed to Southlake Health to strengthen health care for families, including emergency care, psychiatric services, diagnostic operating services, and hospital operations. Over $1 million was invested in the York Region Mental Health and Community Care Centre to support its first year of operations. Additional provincial funding supported homelessness and housing solutions, including more than $2.3 million through Last Mile Funding for Blue Door’s Gorham Street redevelopment, $630,000 for the new Inn From the Cold shelter and transitional housing facility on Yonge Street, and an additional $170,000 through the Ontario Trillium Foundation to support fully accessible features at the new facility. Our municipalities also received more than $6.1 million through the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund to support critical infrastructure needs. Since 2021, this fund has delivered over $34.3 million to Aurora and Newmarket to help keep roads, bridges, and water systems safe while preparing for future growth. Nearly $850,000 supported the opening of a new primary care clinic, connecting more than 2,300 patients in Newmarket–Aurora to local primary care. Workforce development remained a priority, with $3.8 million invested through the Skills Development Fund Training Stream to help youth and adults gain skills for in-demand jobs. Community safety initiatives included $255,000 through the CCTV Grant Program to support York Regional Police, and a $1,528,000 total investment through the Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence for local organizations supporting survivors. A true milestone for our Francophone community was achieved with the transfer of provincial surplus land to support the creation of a Francophone Village, including a 160-bed French-language long-term care home, housing, and recreational space—advancing culturally appropriate, resident-focused care. I was also proud to receive unanimous support in the Ontario Legislature for my Private Member’s motion on modernizing the approval process for communal water and wastewater systems for small and rural communities, including those in York Region.
As we step into 2026, I am proud of everything we accomplished together and energized for the work ahead. My commitment remains unchanged— to listen to you, advocate for our community, and deliver real, tangible results that make Newmarket–Aurora stronger, safer, more inclusive, and healthier. From my family to yours, I wish you a joyful, healthy, and prosperous New Year, and I look forward to continuing to serve you in 2026.

MAYOR MRAKAS An exciting 2026 in store for Aurora! Happy New Year Aurora! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and spent quality time with family and friends. There’s truly something special about winter in Aurora, from our beautiful trails to our outdoors rinks, to our special events. One event that I’m particularly excited for is the Mayor and Council New Year’s Levee on Saturday, January 10, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Aurora Town Square. I always love our annual Levee, as it gives me and all members of Council an opportunity to meet with residents, while giving the whole community a chance to come together to enjoy family-friendly activities such as skating, a pancake breakfast and more. I hope to see you all there! We also have other exciting events and initiatives happening over the first few months of 2026, including Aurora’s Arctic Adventure over the Family Day long weekend in February- and Black History Month events throughout the entire month of February. Bright lights, smiling faces, and Santa - what a Saturday night! Santa Under the Stars was truly a magical evening in Aurora on November 22nd. Christmas floats, marching bands, dance troupes, and of course the star of the show, Santa himself, brought joy to the entire community. A huge thank-you to the Town of Aurora for creating a holiday experience that families will remember for years to come!

The future of home and community care in Ontario CHATS CEO Christina Bisanz recently welcomed Lori Holloway, CEO of the Ontario Community Support Association (OCSA), for an important conversation on the future of home and community care in Ontario. As the provincial voice for community support services, OCSA plays a critical role in advocating for the programs that help people live well at home and remain connected to their communities. Holloway highlighted the growing urgency of advocacy at a time when Ontario’s health-care system is under significant strain. One in five
Ontarians is now over the age of 65, and more than 2.5 million people are living without access to a primary care physician. These pressures are being felt most acutely by older adults, caregivers, and the community organizations that support them every day. “Advocacy is now about survival,” Holloway shared. “We are bringing the voice to people who may not have a voice.” Her message reinforced why strong, coordinated advocacy is essential to protect and strengthen home and community care across the province.

Breakfast with Santa at Wimpy’s Diner was full of holiday magic! Kids under 12 enjoyed a free breakfast, got creative with festive crafts, and wrote letters to Santa himself. The morning was complete with photos alongside Santa and the excitement of handing over their letters to be taken straight back to the North Pole. A joyful holiday treat for the whole family!
In December, the Holiday AWESOME Grant allowed the Awesome Foundation to spread even more kindness throughout the community! The trustees came together for a special morning of giving, contributing $5,000 to support local families, youth, and organizations making a meaningful difference. AWESOME was able to donate: $1,000 to YNBA Basketball to help children who otherwise couldn’t afford to participate in house league basketball. $500 to Aspire to Inspire for their annual holiday dinner supporting local families. $500 to Victim Services York Region to assist families in crisis during a difficult season. $1,000 to Newmarket Food Pantry to help provide food for children and their families. $500 to the Jackie Playter Christmas Community Initiative. $1,000 to a single mother caring for five young children under the age of eight. $500 to a mother of four, including one child with a significant health challenge. On November 28th, MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy stopped by Kerry’s Place with some exciting news for local families. The Ontario government is investing $390,073 to expand access to clinical services through the Ontario Autism Program. This funding will help support the incredible work happening right here at Kerry’s Place! She also met with the team at Inn From the Cold to see how the $173,300 capital grant they received last summer from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF), is making a meaningful impact. This year-long grant is helping ensure Inn From the Cold’s new shelter and transitional housing facility is fully accessible, supporting the installation of a new elevator and accessibility hardware in all washrooms throughout the building.

I'm Marvin! A truly special soul with a heart full of love and a spirit that refuses to quit. I was surrendered after I suddenly became paralyzed in my hind-end, but I haven’t let that slow me down one bit. I was diagnosed with L4-S3 myelopathy. But here’s the amazing news: after just a few sessions of rehabilitation,I have shown signs of regaining pain sensation—a hopeful sign that recovery is possible! I may walk again someday, but for now, I'm learning to zip around in my snazzy blue wheelchair! I am incredibly affectionate, gentle, and sweet-natured. I love people, enjoy being part of the action, and never say no to a cuddle session. I'm looking for a home that’s ready to continue my rehab journey.

This is a picture of me trying to look cute, but most of the time I'm getting into trouble knocking things off shelves or chasing the dogs around the house. They tell me I'm related to big Bengel cats. I'm certainly not a foo foo dainty cat, I'm more like a dog in my personality. I am far too smart for my own good, and my owner always says that I'm the reason people say curiosity killed the cat. I love to be around my human though, I don't let him go anywhere by himself, especially the bathroom. He can usually hear me coming because of my loud purring!
Hi, my name is Gibson! I'm the white part Poodle part Maltese, and this is my pack. I would say, wolfpack, but we're really not that vicious or scary for that matter. I like to think I'm the leader. I kinda have small dog syndrome. My favourite thing to do besides barking at anything that walks by the front window, is to dance like a Russian circus dog. I can actually dance on my hind legs for 3 or 4 minutes, without even putting my front paws down. Come to think of it, that's probably my biggest talent, although I try to come across as the leader, I'm really not much of a protector - I'm more of a lover.

On the 2nd night of Chanukah, Chabad Newmarket hosted the annual menorah lighting celebration at the Mount Albert Sports Complex. The celebration included fun for the whole family! Hanukkah, the eight-day Jewish festival of lights is all about oil. According to tradition, during the rededication of the Holy Temple (the Second Temple) in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean revolt, a small quantity of oil used to light the Temple's menorah somehow miraculously burned for eight days.

What a way to wrap up 2025! The final 100+ Men Who "Give a Damn!" The Newmarket/Aurora meeting was held on December 4th at Community Living Central York! With over 100 men in attendance, the room was filled with positive vibes, and no one "gave a damn" that they were shoulder-to-shoulder, it was all about the energy they brought and the purpose that brings this group together. With 170 members strong (aiming for 200 in 2026), and celebrating 9 years of supporting charities in York Region, the impact keeps growing! Congrats to Welcoming Arms for taking home the top prize. The community came together at Town Square for Aurora’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting and the official opening of the Christmas Market! The market was bursting with fantastic vendors, festive workshops, holiday movies in the theatre and even a special visit from Santa himself. A magical way to kick off the holiday season!

Creating a Ripple of Kindness: The Key Needs Challenge The Key Advantage Team is at it again and this time collaborating with local business to help make a difference, and spread a ripple effect of kindness, this Holiday Season. The Challenge was born out of our strong love and commitment to our community and giving back as neighbours and residents, who feel we get so much from the area we live in. The team identifies a Key Need in the Community and then works to fulfill it. The last 3 years we have worked directly with Yellow Brick House to fulfill the needs of women and children around the holidays. At the heart of the challenge, it is acknowledging a way to help make a difference in the community, around the holidays, and then to spread it and pay it forward. Traditionally, we challenge some of our national referral partners and ask them to fulfill a need in their communities and then challenge other colleagues, local businesses or others. We are aiming to create a ripple effect of kindness, like a pay it forward idea. This year we have partnered with local businesses to make a bigger impact at home and have Conscious Find, Omar's Shoes, Yours Conveniently, Neighbour Media and Replenish General Store partaking. At Key Advantage, we believe that attitude is everything and manifest gratitude and positive energy into all areas of business, community and life. We believe no act of kindness is too small and helping make home a safe space for everyone aligns with our values and culture. The award-winning Newmarket Farmers Market returned for two special weekends in November, with a cheerful holiday market! Welcoming back some of our favourite summer vendors—and introducing a few new ones too—the market was buzzing with shoppers, seasonal treats, and plenty of holiday charm. A festive family event that truly kicked off the season in style!

MAYOR TAYLOR An exciting year ahead 2026 is shaping up to be an exciting year in Newmarket. We kicked off the New Year with the always-popular First Night celebration, and next up is my annual New Year’s Levee on January 16. Held at Riverwalk Commons, the Levee is fun for the whole family, featuring skating, buskers, giveaways, prizes, and a live blues rock show performed by Glenn Marais.
Grand Trunk Railway The idea to connect Toronto to the northern Great Lakes by means of a railway dates back to 1835, but wasn’t given government approval until 1849. This would replace the need to travel three weeks by ship through the Welland Canal and the Detroit / St. Clair Rivers. Plans were formalized the next year for a line running through Aurora, Newmarket, Bradford, Barrie and Collingwood, to be known as the “Ontario Simcoe and Huron Railroad”. It became, however, affectionately known as the "Oats, Straw and Hay Railroad”. A station was erected south of Huron St. (now Davis Dr.) and was replaced by a new one in 1899 which still stands housing the Chamber of Commerce. The railway terminal is now in the Tannery building and railway line, now exclusively passenger commuter trains, operates daily.
Winter fun continues with Ice Lounge on Main February 20 – 22, when Main Street will once again transform into a licensed outdoor lounge with Main Street restaurants and shops spilling into the street. Come out and enjoy the buskers, live music, and celebrate the season with the warmth of family, friends, and neighbours. This year also brings expanded recreation amenities, including a new pickleball centre and the completion of the Mulock Multiuse Path. Most exciting of all will be the opening of Mulock Park in June. This 16-acre park will include gardens, water features, event spaces, public art, a children’s play park, and a refrigerated skating trail. The fully restored Mulock House, at the centre of the park, will be home to the Art Gallery of Ontario’s first satellite gallery outside Toronto, as well as a café and event spaces. And that’s just the first six months of the year ... There will be plenty of reasons to come together and enjoy all that Newmarket has to offer in 2026. I hope to see you throughout the year.

On December 1st, Mayor Taylor presented a “Mayor’s Medal for Exception Community Service” posthumously to Mary Ann Slattery. Her husband Terry Slattery accepted it on her behalf. Mary Ann was long-time resident of Newmarket who volunteered her time to a number of causes and organizations during her 40 years in Town, including the MS Society and Margaret Bahen Hospice. She was also named Citizen of the Year in 2011.

Looking Ahead with Purpose and Optimism This past year, you chose me to represent our community in Ottawa, entrusting me with a profound responsibility and a tremendous honour. Every time I have spoken in Parliament or taken action here at home, my goal has been to reflect our shared priorities. When families told me affordability had become their greatest concern, I raised those voices in Parliament, advocating for action on the cost of living and housing. I also launched the Battle Lines & Budget Lines tour to create space for meaningful conversations about how government decisions affect our daily lives. And when you shared your concerns about the economy, you inspired the Employment and Entrepreneurship Roundtable initiative to be a space where local business owners could openly speak about the pressures they face. I carried those concerns to the Standing Committee on Finance because your voice deserves to be heard at the national level. Many of you also raised serious concerns about transparency in federal finances. In response, I launched a petition calling for an end to budget manipulation, ensuring that operating expenses are not misclassified as capital investments. Canadians understand that a gas bill is not the same as a mortgage payment—and our government should, too. The federal government must continue to uphold international financial reporting standards. Most importantly, you reminded me that the future belongs to those who will inherit it. That is why I created the Youth Advisory Council, empowering young leaders with the tools, confidence, and opportunity to help shape the future of Newmarket–Aurora. As we close out 2025, thank you for your trust, your feedback, and your belief in what we can build together. I look toward 2026 with optimism and wish you a peaceful season surrounded by loved ones. On December 10th, the Town of Newmarket had the pleasure of celebrating their sponsors at the annual Sponsor Appreciation Luncheon held at Old Town Hall. Newmarket is a vibrant community, filled with events and activities for families and friends to enjoy together. At its core, it’s about bringing people closer and fostering connection—and none of it would be possible without the generous support of the sponsors.
Community Living Central York hosted their Annual General Meeting on November 26th, bringing together community partners, supporters, and board members to reflect on a year of impact and look ahead to an inspiring future. Highlights of the evening included welcoming Superintendent Gary Maracle, messages from Board Chair Sarah Vienot and CEO Andrew Fagan, and celebrating several special award recipients.
Santa made a special stop at Align Health Centre for their holiday drop-in on December 9th, spreading cheer and making sure he was in tip-top shape for his big night of deliveries! Clients enjoyed festive games, tasty treats, and even snagged complimentary photos with the jolly man himself. Ho ho ho, what a merry celebration.
Once again, the Newmarket community came together with incredible generosity for Holiday Heroes and Newmarket Food Pantry! The Newmarket Town Office hosted their annual and beloved Toy & Food Drive, and both residents and Town staff showed up in full spirit to make sure those in our community who need a little extra support, receive it. Your kindness truly lights up the season!
A huge thank you to the many volunteers and individuals that donate to the Salvation Army Kettle campaign. This initiative plays such an important role in helping families and individuals in need, especially during the holiday season. With heartfelt generosity, an anonymous donor contributed $250 in Metro gift cards to St. Paul’s Anglican Church. Graciously matching the donation, the wonderful community at St. Paul’s used the funds to purchase food items for the Community Fridge located in front of the Newmarket Library. Together, this kindness is helping nourish neighbours and strengthen our community.

Chabad Aurora hosted the annual menorah lighting celebration at Aurora Town Square on the 1st night of Chanukah. The celebration included crafts, music, face painting, Sufganiyot (Jelly Doughnuts) and Latkes. .

The York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB) was happy to "pay it forward" by presenting a gift card to their educational partners at Rose of Sharon Services for Young Mothers on December 4th. YCDSB staff were grateful that Costco donated this gift card, but in the spirit of Christmas, they wanted to ensure that the mothers and children at the Rose of Sharon had everything they needed for the holidays. The YCDSB provides York Academy at the Rose of Sharon, which supports young mothers in obtaining their high school diploma. Balancing full-time work and weekend events, Anne-Marie Million spent her early years catering family gatherings, weddings, and community celebrations, earning loyal clients through word of mouth. After years in the hospitality industry, Anne-Marie Million transformed her love of cooking into A Million Mouthfuls. What began as a passion project over a decade ago has now grown into one of Newmarket’s most beloved local catering companies. A YEAR OF PROGRESS AND COMMUNITY IN AURORA Happy New Year, Aurora!

I hope everyone had a great holiday season and found time to recharge with family and friends. We have a lot of exciting things coming up in 2026, but before we get to all that, it’s worth taking a moment to look back on what we accomplished in 2025 – a year defined by steady progress, important milestones, and moments that brought us together as a community.
Town Square Comes Into Its Own

A New Chapter for the Aurora Armoury
The first full year of operations at Aurora Town Square delivered exactly what we hoped it would. Throughout the year, dozens of performances filled the Davide De Simone Performance Hall, while community groups used the space for meetings, conferences, and special events. And the feedback from you has been overwhelmingly positive. Post-event surveys showed an average enjoyment rating of 4.64 out of 5, and 95 per cent of respondents said they would recommend the show they attended. Earlier in the year, we also welcomed My Indie Coffee as the new café operator, adding even more life to the space. More people than ever are stopping by Town Square, even if it’s just to grab a coffee, meet a friend, or simply enjoy the atmosphere. Town Square has truly become the central gathering place we envisioned for our community.
In addition to our diverse roster of special events, the Town also hosted a series of viewing parties to cheer on homegrown talent who were playing in some of the world’s biggest sporting events. When Aurora’s own Andrew Nembhard and the Indiana Pacers made it to the NBA Finals, residents gathered at Town Square to watch together. We did the same during the Women’s Rugby World Cup Final, cheering on members of the Aurora Barbarians Rugby Football Club. And when the Blue Jays made their historic World Series run, we of course had to do it again. These events are a reminder that an essential part of community building is sharing exciting and memorable experiences together.
Another huge highlight of 2025 was the Town’s partnership with Slabtown Cider Company to take over operations at the historic Aurora Armoury. With the opening of Slabtown Armoury, the historic and cherished Armoury entered a new chapter, offering farm-to-table dining, locally crafted cider, and a welcoming venue for community events. Looking ahead, it’s easy to picture warm summer evenings on the patio, with the sounds of Concerts in the Park in the background. This is exactly the type of thing that helps create a cool and vibrant downtown where people want to spend time.

Recreation is an enormous part of life in Aurora, and in 2025 the Town showed its commitment to strengthening it with the opening of the new addition at the SARC – an 8,000-square-foot, high-school-sized gym, new change rooms, a multipurpose room, and more. For years, parents, leagues, and community groups told us more indoor recreation space was needed. This expansion responds directly to that need and will support healthy living, confidence, and connection for residents of all ages for many years to come.
The 100th anniversary of the Aurora War Memorial in October was a significant milestone and a profound reflection of our proud and storied military history. At Peace Park, alongside residents from Stouffville and King, we gathered to honour the 71 men whose sacrifices are forever part of Aurora’s story. The anniversary also recognized the community members who came together a century ago to ensure those sacrifices would never be forgotten.
Everything we worked toward in 2025 was rooted in building a stronger community, and that will continue in 2026. Residents will see upgrades to parks and playgrounds, including Atkinson Park, Fleury Park, and Optimist Park. Trail improvements will move forward as well, including the Benjamin Pearson Parkette boardwalk and new connections along the Mattamy, DeGraff, and Shining Hill trails.
Over time, the memorial has evolved to reflect that commitment – from the Altar of Sacrifice added in 1960 to honour those lost in the Second World War, to the Korean War Memorial unveiled in 2023. This year, we also introduced a commemorative veterans crosswalk at Yonge Street and Murray Drive right near Peace Park, offering a visible reminder of the values our veterans defended. And in 2026, a new memorial will be dedicated to Indigenous veterans will be unveiled. One hundred years on, the Aurora War Memorial remains a place where our community pauses, reflects, and remembers together.
We will continue investing in Town facilities, roads, and sidewalks, move ahead with the Yonge Street streetscape redesign as part of our long-term downtown revitalization, and keep bringing people together through the community events Aurora is known for – including more shared viewing events, with the World Cup on the calendar. All of this builds directly on the progress we made together last year. Thank you, Aurora, for another strong year. It remains an honour to serve as your Mayor, and I look forward to what we will accomplish together in 2026. I wish you and your family a safe, healthy, and happy new year.
