In the communities of Newmarket and Aurora, No Frills is more than just a place to find great prices—it is a network of local businesses led by owners who are deeply woven into the fabric of the towns they serve. While each store reflects the unique personality of its owner, a common thread of community spirit, inclusion, and a commitment to giving back ties them together.
John Dickie: A Pillar of Newmarket
John Dickie’s career is a testament to long-term dedication, spanning 34 years with the No Frills organization. In 2017, he realized a significant milestone by taking ownership of Dickie’s No Frills. John has since transformed his store into a hub for local support. He provides vital sponsorships for several local hockey teams within the NMHA, as well as various girls' hockey teams and local baseball leagues. By supporting tournaments at Newmarket arenas and local teams, John ensures youth programs have the resources to thrive. His commitment to food security is equally impactful. He frequently coordinates donations for the local food pantry and hosts up to six food drives annually at the store. One of his most celebrated contributions is the annual Jingle Bell Blitz, a staple of local holiday giving. Through decades of service and nearly a decade of store ownership, John Dickie has proven that a local business can truly be the heart of the community.
Joe and Val Cappiello: Decades of Service in Aurora
For Joe and Val Cappiello, the grocery business is a family endeavor rooted in decades of experience. As franchisees for 20 years—the last six in Aurora—they focus heavily on the intersection of education and community well-being. They maintain active partnerships with schools like G.W. Williams Secondary School and St. Maximillian Kolbe, and are key sponsors of the Aurora Tigers, the Aurora Baseball Association, and Cardinal Carter athletics. Beyond sports, their commitment extends to essential local services and charities. Joe and Val are regular contributors to local food banks and the Legion, and maintain a long-standing relationship with the Optimist Club. They also support York Regional Police fundraisers and local ambulance services. Notably, Joe participated in the "Dancing with the Stars" fundraiser for Easter Seals. Additionally, their store promotes inclusivity through employment programs for individuals with diverse abilities. Over two decades, Joe and Val have made their No Frills a cornerstone of support for the Aurora community.
John van Teunenbroek’s journey with No Frills began in 2004, and in 2019, he opened the Davis Drive location. Since then, he has built a business culture centered on the mantra "we support who we serve". Through partnerships with Community Living Central York and the PEAK program, he provides permanent jobs for individuals with diverse abilities and resume-building experience for students. His store’s impact on local food security is immense, providing roughly $10,000 in food to the Newmarket Community Fridge and thousands more to the Newmarket Food Pantry annually. He also sponsors NMHA hockey teams in exchange for food drive collections and provides shopping buggies for food collections at the Santa Claus Parade. Embracing cultural diversity, the store supports local Diwali events, Chabad celebrations, and provides meals during Ramadan. This leadership earned John the Queen’s Jubilee Pin for Community Service, the CLCY Business of the Year award, and the 2024 Portraits of Giving recipient for Newmarket.
these leaders ensure their stores remain the heart of their neighbourhoods. #GoodNeighbours

DAWN GALLAGHER MURPHY
MPP for Newmarket–Aurora
Building Our Community Together
As we begin February, I’m proud to join our community in celebrating Black History Month — a time to honour the achievements, contributions, and resilience of Black Canadians who make Newmarket–Aurora and our province stronger. I look forward to attending the ABC Black History Gala on February 7 and the NACCA Black History Month Reception on February 8 to celebrate culture, history, and community together.
Here at home, meaningful investments continue to support the well-being and safety of our residents. I recently met with Victim Services of York Region to see how a $345,000 Grow Grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation is expanding mental health supports for individuals and families coping with loss. I also visited Central York Fire Services, which received over $77,000 through Ontario’s Fire Protection Grant to enhance decontamination processes and improve readiness for lithium-ion battery incidents — helping keep our firefighters safe as they protect our community. Across Ontario, we are making progress to improve access to health care. The province is investing up to $8 million to plan 16 new and expanded primary care teaching clinics, connecting 300,000 more people to care while training the next generation of family physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and nurses. This builds on Ontario’s $2.1-billion Primary Care Action Plan, and I’m pleased to share that the Health Care Connect waitlist has now been reduced by more than 75%.

February is also a time to recognize the invaluable contributions of our local non-profit organizations. To celebrate the people and groups who make Newmarket–Aurora such a caring and vibrant community, I will be hosting a Non-Profit Appreciation Event on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, from 4 PM to 6 PM at The George Lounge. As always, my o ce is here to support you. I look forward to another year of progress and community achievements in Newmarket–Aurora.

The Ontario government is investing $77,904.45 through the Fire Protection Grant to ensure firefighters in Central York Fire Services have the resources needed to expand cancer-prevention initiatives and enhance emergency response to lithium-ion battery related incidents.

MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy recently had the pleasure of touring the new location of the York Region Food Network, located at 17665 Leslie Street, Unit 19, Newmarket — an impressive space that reflects the incredible work they do every day to support individuals and families across our community. In addition to their core mission of ensuring access to healthy food through a wide range of programs, YRFN also offers catering services for events, kitchen classes perfect for team-building, and several other community-focused initiatives that help bring people together. Thank you to the entire YRFN team for your leadership, innovation, and commitment to making Newmarket–Aurora a stronger, more caring place for everyone.

Mayor Taylor’s New Year’s Levee on January 16th at Riverwalk Commons, was a wonderful celebration filled with music, treats, and community spirit. Guests enjoyed an incredible performance by Glenn Marais, a spectacular fire show, and festive favourites like free cookies, hot chocolate, maple syrup on a stick, and prizes. Thank you to Mayor Taylor and Council for bringing neighbours together to kick off the New Year in such a warm and welcoming way!

Mayor Hackson and the EG Councillors flipped and served over 400 pancakes at the Mayor’s Levee on January 10th, and neighbours came hungry! It was a full house enjoying a delicious breakfast of pancakes, sausages, fruit kabobs, coffee, and juice—along with plenty of smiles and great conversation. Sharing the morning and connecting with neighbours made for an awesome way to start the year together.

Mayor Mrakas, along with Councillor Thompson and Councillor Weese, kicked off the New Year with neighbours at the Mayor’s Levee on January 10th, at Aurora Town Square. The morning was filled with great conversation, a delicious pancake breakfast, a lively Q&A with the Mayor, and—of course—cake! A fun and welcoming way to start the year together with the community

Bradford Councillor Joe Giordano proudly presented the Bradford Helping Hands Food Bank with a $14,000 donation, made possible through the proceeds from this summer’s Retro Block Party. A heartfelt thank you to Stage Sponsor New Roads Auto, along with partner sponsors Rose Sobera (Close with Rose Team) and Addictive Design, whose support helped make this impactful community event a success.

The Ontario government is investing in the future of our communities. MPP Caroline Mulroney recently visited the Sutton Curling Club to see firsthand the fantastic upgrades made possible by funding from Ontario Trillium Foundation.

Sam EG Eagles U18 players at a practice in Ottawa, signing jerseys and creating a lifetime memories for the young men on his former team. I'm Heidi! I was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which means my delicate skin is prone to cuts and injuries that will need gentle care throughout my life. I'm looking for a devoted owner who understands my medical needs and can be home most of the day to keep a watchful eye on me. I'm searching for a calm home without other dogs or young children. I'm an affectionate girl and an absolute cuddle bug who will happily snuggle up beside you for hours. I like to get out my energy doing nose work and searching for treats or doing a treat puzzle. If you have a patient heart and room on the couch for a devoted companion, I'm ready to fill your home with warmth and unconditional love.
Hello! My name is Bernie Avocado and I am an 11 week old Saint Berdoodle. I am still working on the important things, like perfecting the “puppy dog eyes” and figuring out if shoes are toys (verdict: yes). My mom takes really good care of me and tells me I’m the bestest little boy. Apparently my dad took some convincing but he’s now wrapped around my little paw. And the two tiny humans in the house? They’re my new best friends. I’m very spoiled and can’t wait to be as big as a tiny horse! I’m
Hi, my name is Fin Diesel. Nice to meet you! My parents gave me that name because I’m super fast and can be furious when I need to be — I am a Betta fish after all, and it’s in our nature. Don’t worry though, I’m mostly all charm and confidence. I love swimming around my bubbler tank, showing off my fins, and keeping a close eye on everything around me. Feeding time is absolutely my favourite part of the day, and I never miss it. Life is pretty great when you’re a fish with a big personality and an even bigger name!

I'm Maddy, a sweet senior girl! Even in my golden years, I genuinely get excited about new experiences, greeting each discovery with the kind of joy that's both heartwarming and infectious. I take daily medication for osteoarthritis and for hypothyroidism. I'm doing well with my current treatment and remain comfortable and happy. My future family should be prepared to continue my care and routine checkups to keep me feeling my best. I would thrive best in a home with teenagers or adults who can appreciate my gentle nature and give me the time I need to adjust. My ideal family understands that some of life's greatest rewards come to those who are willing to be patient and nurturing, especially with a deserving senior who has so much love left to give.

Hi, I’m Bli and the whitish orangish Goldfish is Tli. I’m a Black Moor Goldfish and my friend Tli is a Bubble Eye Goldfish. I like eating Fish flakes, and so does Tli. We both live in a 20 gallon tank with some pretty nice decorations. By the way, I don’t know why but Tli always tricks me to get food, one day a fish flake was stuck on my fin and Tli went ZOOM and ate my food. And that's really it about me and Tli!

Hay-lo, my name is Sarah Anne, but my show name is Whiskey in a Tea Cup because, when I have exuberant days, I can be a whole bath tub in moonshine. I love to trail ride, go Fox Hunting, Eventing and Dressage. When we Evented we finished first in Ontario, 3 years in a row. But, I really like to show off my sparkle in Dressage. We always get statements about my flair and presence coming down the centreline and most often, we come home with a red ribbon. Although I am going to turn 17 years old this year, I am still loving all the stuff that my human mom and I do together.
Embrace winter with the warmth of friends & family at Ice Lounge
Later this month, Ice Lounge on Main will once again transform Newmarket’s Main Street into a fully licensed outdoor lounge offering fun for the whole family.

This popular annual event makes it easy to embrace the Canadian winter. Main Street will feature outdoor dining, ice bars, fire pits, and igloo seating areas, as well as live music, street performances, and, of course, all the great downtown boutiques, shops, and restaurants we love. It will be a great way to embrace the chill of winter with the warmth of friends and family.

Now in its third year, Ice Lounge on Main is a must-attend event in the town’s calendar. It, along Canada Day, the summer music series, Splash of Culture York Pride Festival, and Summerfest on Main, give residents and visitors more reasons to enjoy all that our downtown has to offer. Events like these are part of the reason why Newmarket has twice been named ‘municipality of the year’ by Festivals and Events Ontario.
Partnering with downtown businesses on events like this is a big reason why the Main Street area is such a popular community gathering place, and it is an integral part of how we attract over a quarter of a million visitors each year from near and far.
The success of the first two editions of Ice Lounge established it as an iconic winter event and set a new standard in the 905! Be sure to put Ice Lounge on Main on your calendar. I look forward to seeing you there!

On the evening of January 19th, the Affordable Housing Coalition of York Region hosted a sold out screening of a documentary on housing, "Thinking Beyond the Market." The film's director, Brian Doucet, crisscrossed the country exploring novel approaches to affordable housing, from employee housing in Whistler, to mixed housing in Toronto's St. Lawrence neighbourhood, to tenant advocacy in Charlottetown, and lots more in between. Following the screening, there was an engaging conversation about what Newmarket is doing to expand housing here in York Region and how the initiatives explored in the film could be applied elsewhere.

Dear Neighbour,
The quieter days at the start of a new year offer a chance to reflect, refocus, and prepare for the work ahead.

I spent this time with my family and preparing for the return of Parliament, ready to begin the new session with clarity and purpose. Throughout 2025, I listened to neighbours across Newmarket–Aurora, either at doorsteps while canvassing, through the responses you shared in our mailers, and in messages sent directly to my o ce. These conversations were honest, personal, and often deeply concerned. Two issues consistently came up: affordability and public safety.
This motivates the work I do, and I will continue to hold the government to account on the Standing Committee on Finance, which is why I am advocating for fiscally responsible policies that respect transparency, accountability, and the rule of law. In addition, I have launched a petition calling on the government to protect the rule of law and restore fiscal integrity.
But affordability wasn’t the only concern I heard.
Public safety matters deeply to families, workers, and small business owners in our community. It is the confidence to walk down Main Street after dark, to open a business without fear, and to let our children play freely in neighbourhood parks. When there are no meaningful consequences for criminal behaviour, that confidence erodes.
That is why last month I hosted a Stop the Crime Town Hall alongside my colleagues Arpan Khanna and Larry Brock. This was an opportunity to hear directly from community voices and to discuss responsible reforms that put victims, families, and neighbourhood safety first.
As always, thank you for taking the time to stay engaged. I look forward to continuing this important work together.

Looking for a creative and educational way for kids to spend March Break? Join the Aurora Museum & Archives on March 18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Aurora Town Square, for a hands-on workshop that turns children into museum curators for the day!
Perfect for kids ages 7–12, this engaging program offers a unique opportunity to explore the world of museum curation. Participants will learn how museums plan collections and exhibits, gaining behind-the-scenes insights into how artifacts are preserved, displayed, and interpreted.
Children are encouraged to bring a treasured item from home—an object that tells a story about themselves or their family. Through guided activities, they will learn how to craft the narrative of their item in a way that communicates its significance, just like museum professionals do.
Participants will collaborate with peers to design and build a mini exhibition, combining personal and shared stories into a creative display. By the end of the day, each child will see how their own history can come alive in a museum setting.

This March Break workshop is not only fun and hands-on, but also encourages storytelling, teamwork, and creativity. Spots are limited; families are encouraged to register early at aurora.ca/WhatsOn.

On February 28, the Key Advantage Team will join thousands of Canadians nationwide in raising funds for the Coldest Night of the Year walk in support of Inn from the Cold. Giving back is a core part of who we are, not only as real estate professionals, but as homeowners, neighbours, parents, and active members of the communities where we live and work. We believe it is both a privilege and a responsibility to help strengthen the places we call home. At its most fundamental level, home should be a safe space, and it must also be an accessible one. Through our participation in the Coldest Night of the Year, we are walking to raise awareness and critical funds for individuals and families facing housing insecurity, food insecurity, and profound life challenges, recognizing with humility that anyone can experience hardship or lose their footing. Everyone needs support at different moments in their lives. Our mission is to help create pathways toward stability, permanent housing, and a more hopeful future, because safe, secure housing is the foundation of strong communities. For us, real estate and community are inseparable. We hold ourselves to high standards not only in our professional work, but also in the impact we strive to make beyond it. As we walk in the cold in support of this important cause, we are reminded that the need has never been greater, and that meaningful change begins when communities come together.

On January 21st, 2006, the Aurora Seniors’ Centre first opened its doors with 600 members. Twenty years later, on January 21st, 2026, the Centre proudly celebrated its 20th anniversary, now welcoming more than 1,800 members—a true testament to its impact and growth. The celebration was a full house and included Mayor Tom Mrakas, former Mayor Tim Jones—a strong advocate for the creation of the Centre—and longest-standing member Charles Sequeira, who has been part of the centre for 24 years. Congratulations and heartfelt appreciation to the volunteers, Town staff, and members who have helped build and sustain such an incredible, welcoming space.

February is always a busy time of year at The Town of Aurora and this year is no exception.
We begin the month by celebrating Black History Month. We're excited to collaborate with local partners to offer meaningful opportunities throughout February to learn about and honour Black history, culture, and contributions. For a complete schedule of events, visit: aurora.ca/BlackHistoryMonth.
Family Day is also this month and with it comes our annual Arctic Adventure event – a two-day event spanning two venues! Join us on Saturday, February 14 at Aurora Town Square from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the always popular Speaking of Wildlife show, outdoor skating, activities, crafts, and more! Then on Monday, February 16, join us at Aurora Town Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to enjoy outdoor winter games, a snow maze, live entertainment and more. It is always a great time and is the perfect way to beat those winter blues and connect with your family and friends.
I also hope to see many of you at the Aurora Chamber of Commerce Annual Mayor’s Luncheon taking place on Wednesday, February 18. This is a great occasion to reconnect with Aurora’s business leaders and discuss economic priorities for the Town. If you have the opportunity to attend, please do. I look forward to sharing my plans and priorities for the coming year. Visit aurorachamber.on.ca for more details or to purchase tickets.
As always, I encourage residents and businesses to reach out to me at any time either by phone, through social media or in-person. I look forward to keeping everyone informed and engaged#gettingthingsdone

I want to connect with you as we head into February, a time of year that often feels like a chance to catch our breath and reset after a busy start to the year.
Winter can be a demanding season, and February invites us to slow the pace to check in with ourselves and with one another. It’s a month that encourages reflection, conversation, and connection as a community.
That sense of reflection is especially meaningful as we recognize Black History Month. This is a time to acknowledge the Black Canadians whose stories, leadership, and resilience have helped shape our communities and our country. It’s also a chance to listen, learn, and think more deeply about how the past continues to influence the present. These conversations don’t end with February, but this month gives us a moment to be more intentional about having them.

Slabtown Armoury hosted the launch announcement of the return of the Aurora Winter Blues Festival, on January 21st. After a decade, the Aurora Winter Blues Festival (AWBF) returns in 2026, reviving a beloved cultural tradition and rea rming Aurora’s place as a must-visit winter destination for exceptional live music. As one of only two winter blues festivals in Ontario, AWBF offers a truly rare and distinctive cultural experience. Presented by Aurora Cultural Centre in partnership with Music Aurora, this award-winning festival makes its long-awaited return after a five-year hiatus. AWBF once again brings world-class blues, jazz, and soul artists to Aurora, welcoming audiences from across York Region and Southern Ontario for an unforgettable winter celebration of sound, spirit, and community.
February also offers a welcome reminder of the importance of time with loved ones. Family Day is an opportunity to appreciate the people who support and ground us. Whether it’s spending time at home, reaching out to someone you haven’t spoken to in a while, or simply being present, those moments matter. Family comes in many forms, and it’s the care, support, and connection behind it that truly matter.

I hope this February gives you the chance to reflect, to engage in meaningful conversations, and to spend quality time with the people that matter most.
MICHAEL PARSA, MPP

We are incredibly grateful to Anne-Marie Million, founder of A Million Mouthfuls Catering, and her amazing team for their generosity this holiday season. Their kindness included sponsoring a family through Rose of Sharon, donating dozens of socks to Juliane Goyette’s annual sock drive, and supporting Jackie Playter's Community Christmas Drive... just to name a few. Thank you to Anne-Marie and her team for spreading care, compassion, and nourishment where it was needed most.

On January 12th, we were proud to join the team from Inn From the Cold, MP Cobena, MPP Gallagher Murphy, Mayor Taylor, and Magna International to o cially kick off this year’s Coldest Night of the Year campaign. Across the country — and close to home — we walk on February 26th to support neighbours experiencing homelessness and to ensure vital services like emergency shelter, outreach, and transitional housing continue here in Newmarket. Inn From the Cold plays a critical role in our community, offering compassion, safety, and a path forward for those who need it most. Every step we take — and every dollar raised — helps strengthen that mission. Let’s come together once again and show that Newmarket cares.

The site at the south-west corner of Main & Timothy Streets has hosted a hotel since the 1820’s. The original hotel was established by Andrew Borland and William Roe. It was later operated by George Playter who ran the first stage coach between Toronto (then York) and Holland Landing.
In 1845 the hotel was purchased by James Forsyth who erected a new brick building in the Georgian style of architecture which still stands today. Throughout the years the hotel took on various names reflecting the name of the owner at the time (Pipher House and Proctor House, for example). It eventually took the name the King George Hotel after King George V ascended to the throne in 1910. This name survives to this day and the old hotel hosts a microbrewery and restaurant named in his honour “The George”.

Daniel Panetta’s career is a testament to the endurance of true talent. A vocalist with a staggering 5-octave range and the ability to sing in six languages, Panetta has lived a lifetime on stage before most artists release their debut single. Now, he stands at the forefront of his most ambitious project yet: Daniel Panetta and the Midnight Company, a high-octane revival of Soul and Motown infused with a modern, gritty edge. While working on his long awaited original project Panetta’s journey into the professional world began at the remarkable age of five. Before he even entered high school, Daniel had established himself as a sought-after talent, lending his voice to commercials and television projects. This early immersion in the industry set the stage for a meteoric rise.As he matured, so did the magnitude of his audience. By age 16, he was performing for high-profile figures, including the wedding of Ben and Jessica Mulroney, The Beaches Jazz Festival, and in Italy for a tribute to Luciano Pavarotti. His youth was defined by a relentless schedule of appearances at countless international stages, galas and charitable foundations, taking him from venues across North America to Europe and more.

A decorated competitor, Panetta was a frequent scholarship and bursary winner, recognized repeatedly for his technical ability. This trajectory culminated in a rare honor: receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at just 21 years old—a recognition of the profound impact he had made on the arts community while barely out of his teens.
However, the relentlessness of the industry eventually took its toll. In 2016, following a split with his long-time management company, Panetta made the di cult decision to walk away. He left the accolades, the contracts, and the spotlight behind, entering a hiatus. It was a necessary silence. A time to recalibrate and rediscover the artist buried beneath the business.
In 2018, Panetta didn't just return; he rebuilt from the ground up. Stripping away the "child prodigy" label, he began performing again and rediscovered his passion for the art form he was built for. He formed The Midnight Company in 2022, a collective of elite musicians who share his vision for authentic, live instrumentation. Today, they are a powerhouse unit, delivering tight, groovy, and explosive performances that bridge the gap between nostalgic big-band energy and soulful anthems. The band consists of long time friends and colleagues who are, to quote Daniel, "the most talented people he knows": Iain LeslieGuitar, Manny Degrandis - Bass, Colin Hassell - Drums, Julian Brindley - Trumpet, Eric Wong - Saxophone, Astrid Ripepi - Vocals.

Last year the Midnight Company performed a sold out show at Market Brewing, headlined Bradford's 'Music in the Park' and Newmarket's 'Summerfest' as well as being featured at the 2025 Taste of Culture on the Water at Riverwalk. They are performing next on February 28th (doors 6:30PM) at the Stephen Leacock Theatre in Keswick, plus more upcoming gigs in and around York Region which will be announced soon!
