We are so excited to be delivering another edition that is packed full of awesome partners and community content! As always, here are a few reminders and things to look forward to… • The first Friday in August is International Beer Day - so grab some friends and grab a brew at one of our local breweries; Old Flame, The George or Market Brewing and celebrate on August 5th! • World Honey Bee Day falls on the third Saturday of August, bringing awareness to the benefits and environmental needs of honey bees. • Also on August 20th, be sure to check out Aurorapalooza! NEIGHBOUR COVER STORY Wasim Jarrah Wasim comes from humble beginnings, born and raised in Lebanon, and has been a resident of Newmarket for the past 22 years. Wasim is a Real Estate Broker for Keller Williams in Aurora and the Ontario Real Estate Board Association recently appointed him Provincial Director for Central Ontario. His passion for community extends throughout his professional and personal life and his giving is as diverse as the community that we live in. Wasim is a member of the Awesome Foundation Newmarket, which awards young innovators with funds to help them develop their ideas. Every year he awards local students with scholarships and has awarded over $22,000 so far! He is also a supporter of NACCA, contributing to their annual scholarship awards as well. Wasim owns Supermoon Cheesecake in Newmarket and selects a local charity each month to be the recipient of a donation of $1 from every cheesecake sold that month. To date, Supermoon has donated over $8000, including a $1000 donation to the Ukrainian relief efforts and on a weekly basis, he donates cheesecakes to the community fridge located outside of the Newmarket Public Library. He works with Blue Door to locate affordable housing for those who need it most and is a Board Member of the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce. He loves giving back to the community he is a part of which is something he learned from his grandfather and looks forward to doing for years to come! MAYOR TAYLOR More great outdoor recreation spaces on the way I am getting very excited about some of the transformational recreation and public space projects we are working on in Newmarket. The Skatepark at the Magna Centre is going to open soon and this will be a big hit with the youth of Newmarket. I have said this before, our goal as a community for our kids should be ‘less screen time and more play time’! I am also very excited that the next few years will see bike lanes on Yonge Street north, Bayview, and Lorne – not to mention the transformational Mulock Trail running from one end of Town to the other. This multi-use path will be separated from the road and will serve tens of thousands of residents each year. We are also going to build a beautiful new park on the site of the old Hollingsworth arena which will be funded by the development on Davis Dr. and bring new amenities to the neighbourhood. Finally, the vision for the Mulock park and house will be brought to life over the next three years and will represent a new standard for park design in the GTA, and more importantly, it will serve our growing community for generations. Shared outdoor public spaces are one of the cornerstones of a great community and our Council has an ambitious plan for the next five years to provide many more outdoor recreation opportunities.

On June 25th, Margaret Davis celebrated her 100th birthday with her family (including 4 generations of women) and friends! She has lived in Newmarket since 1946 and is on the Hall of Fame at Magna Arena for starting the Newmarket Figure Skating Club with her friend Sally Brice in 1950. In 1946, she and her husband Keith Davis got the Newmarket Tennis Club started up again after the War and they volunteered and ran the tennis club for 30 years. In 1987 she started the Newmarket Duplicate Bridge Club at the Newmarket Public Library and was President for 35 years. #100yearsyoung

All you’ll need is your lawn chair and your dancing feet! Food is available on site and the entertainment lineup will not disappoint with a variety of musical genres including RnB, Country, Classic Rock, Celtic and Pop. A MESSAGE FROM ABUSE HURTS

Abuse Hurts has embarked on a three-year, Breaking Silence Building Communities Project thanks to generous funding from Women and Gender Equality Canada. The project includes the delivery of a free, three-part Hope Conference series on interpersonal and intimate partner violence, with a particular focus on marginalized women/girls who are part of the indigenous, visible minority, LGBTQ2, and/or lower economic communities. While addressing stereotypes (unconscious beliefs, biases and prejudice) that can directly impact early detection, prevention and intervention of interpersonal and intimate partner violence in marginalized communities, the project culminates in the production of valuable resource materials to promote education and awareness. The 2nd installment, "LEVERAGE", is on October 18, 2022 with an exciting array of both expert and knowledgeable speakers and is geared toward attendees from fields of education, health care, first responders and more. "LEVERAGE" focuses on understanding how other groups have worked together to build bridges in the community and addressed different challenging situations, the exploration of joint problem solving, case studies, and how to maintain a foundation of hope.

The CFUW Home & Garden Tour 2022 was a resounding success! This fundraiser was meant to support a scholarship program for young women in our community - Canadian Federation University Women of Aurora Newmarket. Visitors enjoyed the variety of homes and gardens and $27,000 was raised for scholarships. Building our community together is my top priority as your newly elected MPP for Newmarket —Aurora. I will champion causes that will ensure our community remains the best place to live, work and raise a family, including advocating for the expansion of Southlake Regional Health Centre, working with local business owners to strengthen our local economy, supporting the new elementary school being built in Aurora, and continuing the important work of respecting our diversity and ensuring inclusivity for all. It has been my pleasure to attend community events this month. I would like to congratulate all the recipients of the Newmarket African Caribbean Canadian Association scholarship awards. It was a great ceremony and I thank NACCA for giving me the opportunity to address these young scholars! It was also wonderful to attend the 2022 Aurora U10 Baseball Tournaments and cheer on our Newmarket Hawks to victory. Go, Hawks! I highly recommend the live Concerts in the Park on Wednesday evenings in Aurora, and the TD Newmarket Music Series on Thursday evenings at Riverwalk Commons. Our community is vibrant and alive with music. I encourage you to come out and enjoy the sounds of these tribute bands.

Regan Irvine is a Newmarket local that in 2014 opened The Irv Gastro Pub in Toronto after losing his dad to ALS the previous year - who was lovingly known as “Irv”. He always dreamed of opening up a restaurant in his hometown but wasn’t able to find a space that felt like home. Mike and Donna D’Angela are the owners of The George Brewhouse who opened their doors to the community in 2019. They restored the historic dining room and gathering space back to its original purpose, respecting its heritage and service in the past, yet outfitting it for today’s community to enjoy - enabling new memories to be made. Regan and Mike met through a casual conversation with a friend and the group of owners clicked right away! On March 1st 2022 they merged their worlds and opened their doors as The Irv at the George! Aurora King Baseball Association announces winner of the 10U Tournament

Sport Aurora All Sport One Day Program. REGISTER TODAY!

Fourteen out-of-town teams, from as far away as Sudbury, joined two local 10U baseball teams to compete in the Aurora King Baseball Association (AKBA) Tournament held at Aurora’s Family Leisure Complex and Optimist Park. A total of 31 games were played that weekend, resulting in the Newmarket Hawks being crowned champions and the Orangeville Bengals as runners up. Aurora King Baseball Association and Sport Aurora congratulates the coaches, parents and players for their sportsmanship and play. AKBA also thanks the Town of Aurora for sponsoring the Tournament!

Featuring 10+ obstacles, an after party of music, family friendly activities and food, Sport Aurora Scramble is the ultimate kick-off to fall! Runners will embark on a fun 5 km adventure through obstacles such as wall climbs, net crawls and tire runs. Too tough? Not to worry. There is a 2 km option and each obstacle on both courses will be graded in difficulty, so you choose how much of a challenge you want. We will be fundraising for Rick Hansen Public School, Sport Aurora as well as All Kids Can Play!
