Hello, August!

A new month means a new edition of the Neighbour Paper, and we're excited to share another issue filled with inspiring local stories, incredible community partners, and the people, places, and events that make our neighbourhood such a special place to call home. Thank you to everyone who helps bring this publication to life each month - our partners, readers, and supporters - allowing us to celebrate the very best of our community. As we soak up the final stretch of summer, here's a look at what's happening this month:

August Long Weekend falls on August 1st - 3rd this year, with the Civic Holiday on the 3rd.

The first Friday in August is International Beer Day - so grab some friends and head over to one of our amazing local breweries on August 7th!

August 12th is celebrated as International Youth Day, recognizing the contributions of young people to global society and addressing issues that affect youth.

Perseid Meteor Shower (also known as the Perseids) is active every year from mid-July to late August. This year it will peak overnight from August 12th to August 13th, producing 50 to 100 meteors per hour under clear, dark skies. Peak viewing will be optimal because the shower coincides with a new moon, leaving the sky completely dark.

National Dog Day is celebrated annually on August 26th to honour dogs of all breeds, promote adoption, and recognize their service and companionship.

For some, retirement means slowing down. For Susan, it was the start of a dynamic new chapter dedicated to lifting up our local community. From empowering young mothers to supporting hospice care and fostering neighbourhood spirit, Susan’s life is a masterclass in leading with heart and executive skill. Born in Cornwall, Ontario, Susan began a remarkable career in education at age 19. While teaching, she earned her B.A., M.Ed., and MBA, eventually rising to Director of Education—a role where she oversaw the education of 56,000 students and the construction of 36 schools. This immense leadership and logistical experience became a priceless gift to local non-profits upon her retirement.

Susan’s natural leadership shines brightly at Rose of Sharon, an organization empowering young mothers, where she has served as Board Chair for 10 years. When the charity needed to relocate, Susan negotiated a vital 15-year lease at 1145 Nicholson in Newmarket and volunteered as project manager to retrofit the building. Thanks to generous donors, this essential community lifeline gratefully opened its new doors in September 2024.

Her impact ripples across several other vital local causes:

• Police Appreciation Committee (20+ years): Coordinates York Region's "Chief of Police for a Day" essay competition for Grade 5 students and directs the annual dinner's detailed script and show flow.

• Hill House Hospice (4 years): Serves on the Board of Directors, lending her governance expertise to their active expansion campaign for compassionate end-of-life care.

• National Business/Education Organization: Works as a Senior Strategist, organizing massive biannual conferences that feature 72 focus groups over four days.

Locally, Susan keeps busy serving as a multi-term Condo Corporation, Recreation Centre, and Common Elements President. She is also an active parish finance committee member, a tennis club executive, and an avid sports fan.

With her unique blend of brilliant organizational skill and deep empathy, Susan does it all with a flexible spirit. We are incredibly lucky to have leaders like her making our communities a better place to live! #GoodNeighbour

Community is a word we use often, but its true meaning is felt more than it is defined.

That is where care meets community. Not in a building, but in the hearts of the people who make it home.

What an incredibly moving day at the first annual Savy's Walk 2026 Neighbour Media joined more than 350 members of our community at Lambert Willson Park to celebrate the remarkable life and enduring legacy of Savanna May Royes. Together, our community raised more than $10,000 for the Savanna May Royes Aviation Grant, ensuring that Savy's passion for aviation will continue to inspire and empower future generations to pursue their dreams. After exploring different fields of study, she discovered her passion for aviation and set her sights on becoming a commercial airline pilot. Tragically, on July 8th, 2025, Savy lost her life in a mid-air collision during a training flight. Although her journey was cut far too short, her dreams, her determination, and her impact continue to soar. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who walked, volunteered, donated, sponsored, and stood alongside the Royes family. Your support transformed a day of remembrance into one of hope, inspiration, and community.

As summer continues, I've enjoyed attending many of the wonderful community events that bring Newmarket–Aurora together. Whether it was the Hindu Sanatan Kendra Community BBQ, the NewMakeIt Makers Festival, the Aurora Legion's 100th Anniversary BBQ, the Sport Aurora Student Athletes of the Year Awards, the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Celebration, or the NACCA Scholarship Ceremony, it has been a pleasure connecting with residents and hearing about the issues and priorities that matter most to you. These conversations help me better represent our community at Queen's Park.

On August 1, we recognize Emancipation Day, an important opportunity to reflect on the abolition of slavery across the British Empire and to honour the resilience, achievements, and lasting contributions of Black Canadians. It is a time to remember our shared history while continuing to build a stronger, more inclusive Ontario.

Our government recently announced a historic $10 million conservation agreement with our federal partner that will permanently protect nearly 48,000 acres of forests, wetlands, and natural landscapes across Ontario. The agreement includes the expansion of Hockley Valley Provincial Park, protecting an additional 314 acres of the Niagara Escarpment, including sections of the Bruce Trail. Since 2020, Ontario has also invested $60 million through the Greenlands Conservation Partnership,

MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy announced that the Town of Newmarket is receiving $57,376 in annual funding for seniors programming. The Newmarket Seniors Meeting Place serves over 1600 older adults and seniors including Indigenous and 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. Programming is offered in-person and online and includes seasonal events, Zumba, yoga, arts & crafts, shu eboard, card games, and many more drop-in programs.

Nadia started this initiative to help build a pipeline of future leaders that are diverse, informed, and equipped with practical skills as soon as they leave high school.

The Aurora, East Gwillimbury, and Newmarket Summer Concert Series has been hitting all the right notes, bringing neighbours together for unforgettable evenings filled with live music, fresh air, and summer memories. Tuesday nights — join the fun at the East Gwillimbury Civic Centre. Wednesday nights — enjoy the sounds of summer at Aurora Town Park. Thursday nights — head to Riverwalk Commons in Newmarket for an evening of live entertainment. We’re still making some final touches to our skatepark and pump track which will open soon. This new park is the ultimate destination to make great summer memories in EG!

This incredible new community space has been designed to bring people of all ages together to stay active, connect with neighbours, and enjoy the outdoors. Whether you're exploring the playgrounds, cooling off at the splash pad, playing a game of beach volleyball, gathering around the game tables, using the multi-use courts, or simply relaxing in the gardens, the HALP Park truly offers something for everyone.

To celebrate this exciting milestone, I invite you to join us for a Community Park Celebration on Monday, September 1, from 3 to 9 p.m.

The celebration will feature various family-friendly activities, including a live concert, Tai Chi and line dancing demonstrations, interactive activities, community displays, a vendor market, an outdoor movie, and plenty of opportunities to discover everything the HALP Park has to offer. This event is a chance to connect with neighbours, celebrate our growing community, and experience this exciting new space together.

The completion of the HALP Park is the result of years of planning, collaboration, and community input. Your contributions helped shape a dynamic space that reflects the needs of our growing community while also encouraging active living, fostering meaningful connections, and creating memories for generations to come.

Let’s make a summer to remember With Summer in full swing, Newmarket is creating opportunities for residents to get together and have fun, including last month’s Canada Day Festival, the Moonlight Movies, the weekly music series concerts, A Splash of Culture, and Summerfest on Main.

After only two years, Summerfest on Main was named Best Event in Canada this past Spring, setting a new standard for events in the GTA and beyond. For anyone who has been, it is no surprise that Summerfest almost immediately became a go-to event for residents and visitors alike. Over four days in August, Main Street transforms into the ultimate summer hangout with something for everyone.

It’s amazing to see friends and families sharing a meal on the extended patios. The sheer joy on the faces of the kids playing games is amazing. The street performers take the buskers’ craft to a new level, evoking awe and wonder in old and young alike.

And the silent disco is almost as amazing to watch as it is to take part in. If you do nothing else, go to the disco. Listening to your own soundtrack while dancing together is perhaps the perfect metaphor for a community that accepts people being themselves and where no one stands alone – a community that cares to be bold.

Responsible Spending Starts with Accountability

At the beginning of July, I was honoured to be appointed Shadow Minister for the Treasury Board. In this role, I will focus on holding the government accountable for how it spends your tax dollars, promoting responsible budgeting, and protecting the integrity of Canada's public finances.

This responsibility reflects a concern I hear time and again from residents across Newmarket-Aurora, regardless of political a liation. People tell me, "I pay income tax on every dollar I earn. I pay HST on the things I buy. When I fill up my car, I pay fuel tax. When I buy a drink, I pay alcohol tax. If I save and invest, I pay capital gains tax. When I sell my business, I pay tax. And even when I die, I may be taxed.”

If we're already paying all these taxes, why is the government still running massive deficits?

It is a fair question.

This year, Tax Freedom Day fell on June 9. That means the average Canadian worked from January 1 until June 9 simply to pay taxes. For 159 days, Canadians were working to fund the government before they could begin earning for themselves and their families. Government spending is not free. Every dollar Ottawa spends must first be earned by a hardworking Canadian, either through taxes today or debt that future generations will be left to repay.

As your Member of Parliament and Shadow Minister for the Treasury Board, I will continue asking the tough questions, advocating for responsible spending, honest budgeting, and greater transparency. Canadians deserve a government that treats every taxpayer dollar with the same care families use when managing their own household budgets.

It was a wonderful celebration of Canadian pride, community spirit, and everything that makes our communities such a special place to call home. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who organized, volunteered, performed, and attended. Your enthusiasm and community pride made this Canada Day truly unforgettable. Gurnett Street

The world of the past is one that made great use of all sorts of natural materials. They were shaped and processed by skilled workers who would often hone their craft over an entire lifetime. The tanning of leather is one such craft – a necessary, if smelly, industrial step between the farm and the factory. Early in our Town’s past, even before the name Aurora had left anyone’s lips, our most prominent tanner was John Gurnett.

Having sold a running tannery at Yonge and Centre in 1852, he purchased land along the creek, just South of Yonge and Church in 1857 and opened another. Four years later, a subdivision plan was drawn up which included a new thoroughfare extending from Victoria down to Connaught, providing new residential lots for the influx of workers during Aurora’s industrial boom. This new street would be named “Gurnett” for the tanner himself. However, within two more years, John had sold his business to one James Lloyd, and in 1866, his wife Rachel passed away at just 45 years old. It seems shortly thereafter he left the area, remarried another woman named Rachel, and grew a new, large family. Although their time here wasn’t very long, the Gurnetts have left a lasting legacy.

John Candy Drive

John Candy’s connection to East Gwillimbury is a heartwarming piece of local history. In the late 1970s, as his fame exploded with SCTV, Candy and his wife, Rose, bought a 100-acre farm on Doane Road in Queensville to escape the hustle of the entertainment industry.

Despite discovering a creek running through the basement during their first summer—a situation his family later joked was their real-life Money Pit—Candy fell in love with the property, renovated it, and turned it into a working farm and country sanctuary. Known as one of Hollywood's most grounded stars, Candy used the estate to host low-key gatherings for comedic legends like Martin Short, Eugene Levy, and Catherine O’Hara. Even Robert De Niro once visited the farm just to decompress.

Though his career eventually took him to Los Angeles, the family kept the property and returned every summer. Following Candy’s tragic passing in 1994, the town sought a permanent way to honour him. When a new housing subdivision was developed right alongside the former Candy estate near Leslie Street and Doane Road, East Gwillimbury o cially named John Candy Drive to celebrate their favourite honorary local.

John Bowser Crescent

John W. Bowser lived a life of staggering contrasts, splitting his time between building global skylines and raising purebred cattle in York Region. As a premier building contractor, Bowser was a titan of 20th-century construction. He famously directed the relentless, record-breaking completion of the Empire State Building in New York City, managing a crew of over 3,000 workers to finish the world's tallest skyscraper ahead of schedule. His engineering prowess also led him across the globe, where he supervised the construction of the American Embassy in Tokyo, Japan, alongside several major projects across the United States. Seeking a quiet escape from his high-stakes career, Bowser turned to the countryside just west of Yonge Street and south of Davis Drive. In 1933, he purchased Lot 95 in King Township, transforming the land into a prestigious agricultural estate where he raised champion Aberdeen Angus cattle. Bowser operated the farm for fifteen years before selling it to James Crossland in 1948.

Even in death, Bowser’s two distinct worlds converged. He is buried in the nearby Aurora Cemetery, where his legacy is permanently etched into the landscape: his custom granite memorial stone is a beautifully detailed, miniature replica of the Empire State Building.

On July 17th, the Royal Canadian Legion proudly marked its 100th Anniversary—a remarkable milestone honouring a century of unwavering service to Canada's Veterans, military families, and communities. First incorporated on July 17th, 1926, the Legion has spent the past 100 years ensuring the sacrifices of those who served are never forgotten while continuing to provide vital support to Veterans across the country. To commemorate this historic occasion, the Aurora Legion hosted a meaningful day of remembrance and celebration, beginning with a flag-raising ceremony at Aurora Town Park, followed by a second ceremony at the Aurora Legion and a community BBQ that brought Veterans, members, families, and residents together. Aurora–Oak Ridges–Richmond Hill

The Lions Clubs of Aurora and Oak Ridges came together for the annual Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides at Queen's Jubilee Park, supporting a cause that truly changes lives. For 41 years, Canadians have participated in this incredible walk to help provide Dog Guides that restore independence, build confidence, and transform the lives of people living with disabilities. Every step taken and every dollar raised helps create new journeys—from hope to independence. Thank you to everyone who walked, volunteered, donated, and supported this amazing event. Together, we're making a lasting difference, one paw at a time!

Grand Trunk Railway

The idea to connect Toronto to the northern Great Lakes by means of a railway dates back to 1835, but wasn’t given government approval until 1849. This would replace the need to travel three weeks by ship through the Welland Canal and the Detroit / St. Clair Rivers.

Plans were formalized the next year for a line running through Aurora, Newmarket, Bradford, Barrie and Collingwood, to be known as the “Ontario Simcoe and Huron Railroad”. It became, however, affectionately known as the "Oats, Straw and Hay Railroad”. A station was erected south of Huron St. (now Davis Dr.) and was replaced by a new one in 1899 which still stands housing the Chamber of Commerce. The railway terminal is now in the Tannery building and railway line, now exclusively passenger commuter trains, operates daily.

We had a reel-y great time at Fairy Lake on July 6th as the Newmarket Optimist Club hosted their annual Family Fish Out! Thanks to the generous support of York Regional Police and the Aurora Bass Masters, families cast their lines for a day packed with fun, including FREE fishing gear, a friendly fishing competition, and a delicious FREE BBQ. A huge shout-out to the volunteers, sponsors, and everyone who helped make this fin-tastic community tradition such a huge success.

It was AWESOME to present $1,000 cash from the Awesome Foundation to Shankave from Shine Through The Rain Foundation for their send a child to camp program. They will be able to send to two children impacted by life-threatening illness to a local camp of their choice to help integrate them back into play and social life.

Every year, Newmarket Councillor Bob Kwapis, Lynnette Lanning from Neighbour Media, and The George owner Mike D'Angela turn their birthday celebration into a chance to give back by supporting a local charity. This year, Community Living Central York was chosen as the charity recipient, receiving the funds raised at the birthday event on July 3rd.
