MAYOR TAYLOR Pitch in to clean up our town Our Town-wide clean-up day is on Saturday, May 7. This annual event began 44 years ago and was then known as “The Holland River Clean-Up Day.” I remember that first day well, we had tow trucks pulling car parts and oil drums out of the river. Now, after 40 years, our Town is cleaner and greener thanks to thousands of volunteers. For the past 2 years in a row, we have had to either cancel or scale back our community clean-up and it shows. There is trash in our parks and along our creeks and rivers. Now is a great time for everyone to pitch in and pick up trash on May the 7th! Mayor Taylor, Ward Councillor Woodhouse, the students and their parents walked together from Alexander Road/Srigley Street to the school to show how fun walking to school can be. Staff from the partner organizations were also on hand to greet walkers and provide some fun giveaways. This "Walking Wednesday” event was part of an initiative to promote active transportation to school – walk, bike, scooter.

At Rose of Sharon: • Youth can continue their high school education (up to 21 years) with onsite childminding in our Child Development Centre and transportation support at our Newmarket location. • Parents of any age (until baby reaches 6 months of age), can learn about prenatal nutrition and maternal care through All Babies Count which offers weekly workshops and counseling support. • Parents (up to 29 years) participate in online and onsite weekly workshops that offer parenting skills, personal and child development knowledge through our Living & Learning Together programs. • Youth have access to 1-on-1 personal counseling support and receive help coordinating with other community services. • Young families have access to our food security services which promotes family health and well-being with nutrition education workshops, personal consults and free home deliveries of groceries, baby food, practical supports and diapers. • New! The Newmarket Huskies are a 12-month, top-level distance track club with a focus on events from 400/800m up to the marathon. We race in various seasons, including winter indoor track, spring/summer outdoor track, fall cross country and full-year road racing. On May 7th (Free Comic Book Day) local First responders will be attending R & D Comics and Collectables to give out free superhero posters, K9 cards and police posters to attendees as part of the 2nd annual “Heroes for Reading, Books for Youth” book collection campaign. New comics, graphic novels and books will be collected and redistributed to youth and teens who are in need, within the community. Please feel free to drop by the store, purchase a book and leave it in the collection bin!

Where is your favourite place to go in the community? Main Street Newmarket is my absolute favourite place to go for almost anything. If we are planning to go for dinner, drinks, bring the kids out, go for a walk - we will head down there! If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be? This one is based more on the fact that I am a real estate agent, but I would tell my younger self to buy more real estate and hold onto it and save more money. What is your favourite holiday to celebrate? I love Christmas because it is the time of the year that we give back to the community and get to spend a lot of time with family and friends, doing what we love. The joy on our kids' faces over the holidays is amazing. How long have you lived in the community? I have lived in Newmarket for most of my life. We moved here when I was 9 and I have always lived here, other than when I went to London for school. It is amazing how the community has grown but still has the small town feel. What is your favourite sport? Do you play for any local teams? I love most sports - but I would say baseball is my favourite to watch and play! I am currently the head coach of my son's Rep baseball team and I absolutely love it - and hey who doesn't love the Blue Jays?!

What is your most memorable community moment? There are many moments - surviving some crazy weather at the Newmarket Jazz Festival, Hometown Hockey coming to Newmarket, being a part of the numerous drive-by celebrations that took place during COVID, and the Farmer's Market every Saturday! What does being a good neighbour mean to you? Spreading good vibes every day! It's doing little things to brighten someone's day - like shoveling the sidewalk in front of the store and our neighbours in the winter, supporting local businesses and our community. What is your favourite beverage? Ken: Slushie Vickie: Beer If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? Somewhere near the ocean - either a quiet island in the Caribbean, or Vancouver Island. Where is your favourite place to go in the community? We love all the trails in town. Whether it's a quick walk at lunch around Fairy Lake or a bike ride up to Mount Albert, we have an amazing trail system - and of course Main Street! .

What is your go-to local restaurant? Crow’s Nest – the perfect neighbourhood pub. The Buttery – a great family restaurant. How long have you lived in the community? For 40 years now, I moved here when the population was under 50,000 people and a four bedroom house was selling for $80,000 to $90,000. What are your top 3 favourite movies? To Sir, with Love – I watched this on the first date with my wife. One Magic Christmas. ET – First Sci-fi film with contemporary effects. What is one thing that most people don’t know about you? I am from a family of 15 – the 7th son of a 7th son. What is your favourite holiday to celebrate? The spirit of goodwill and generosity is in the air during Christmas and it is something I truly enjoy. .
