Let me introduce myself… My name is Lynnette Lanning and I am so excited to own and operate Neighbour Media - a modern local media company with the goal of connecting communities through our Neighbour Social Media pages and Neighbour Paper. After partnering with Umbrella Media, Myles Doak and Elisa Laxdal joined the team. Collectively we have a passion for community and are dedicated to helping local organizations thrive! On March 6th, Brianna, Michael and Kylie were among 300 Newmarket residents gathered at Riverwalk Commons, along with Newmarket Council and local faith leaders, to show our support for the people of Ukraine.
The NewRoads Automotive Group Celebration of Women 2022 Awards event was hosted by the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce at the NewRoads Performing Arts Centre, on March 9th. Congratulations to ALL of the incredible nominees, and a special shout-out to A Million Mouthfuls Catering - the food was incredible!
Local First Responders hosted a Community Open House at Fire Station 4-1 on March 5th, in honour of International Women’s Day on March 8th! It was a fantastic event, filled with amazing organizations and community members. It was great to gather together to celebrate women and our local female First Responders.

MAYOR TAYLOR Building great spaces With the days getting longer and the weather getting warmer, it is great to see residents out enjoying all that Newmarket has to offer. These past two years have certainly shown us the need and value of our outdoor amenities, like parks and trails. With an increasing number of people working at home, as many employers shift to hybrid workplaces, residents will have even more opportunities to enjoy the Town’s amenities and we’re planning for more outdoor spaces in the years to come. We’re looking forward to the first full season of the spray pad in the Dr. Margaret Arkinstall Park this summer, as well as the completion of the outdoor skate park at the Magna Centre. Longer-term, we’re designing the Mulock park, based on the extensive master plan completed last year. We’re currently in the engagement phase for a new outdoor ice rink and all-season community space at the Ray Twinney Complex. We will also finalize plans this year for a multi-use path, which will run the length of Mulock Drive from Harry Walker Parkway to the Mulock park.
The final game for the “She Shoots, She Saves” campaign was played on March 5th at the Ray Twinney Sports Complex in Newmarket! The girls from CYGHA joined by Aurora Mayor Tom Mrakas and Newmarket Mayor John Taylor, who went head-to-head in a shootout then dropped the puck to start the game. Huge shout out to Trish the Campaign Manager and these young women that are making our community a safer place!
Great spaces like these set Newmarket apart, help to bring us together and build a stronger community.
On March 12th, Adam McEachern brought awareness to an event he is hosting in honour of his hero - his son Caleb. Adam performed a “Murph Challenge” workout demo at Canadian Tire in Newmarket to spread the word about his 24-hour fundraising session that is coming up on May 14th/15th in support of Kerry’s Place. NEIGHBOURHOOD Charity Highlight World Autism Awareness Month A variety of events will be taking place throughout the Kerry’s Place supported living homes, among our community programs and within the community at large, to celebrate the children, youth, adults with ASD and their families, and commemorate Autism Awareness Month.

Raising the Flag Event - Flags that are decorated and hung in windows or on doors at many of our offices and supported living sites. 2022 Autism Heroes Event - Adam McEachern, a YRP Officer who has a 7-year-old son with autism, will be hosting his 2nd annual 24-hour Fitness Challenge on May 14th/15th, in support of Kerry’s Place. His goal is to raise $100,000! Registration is open: Kerrysplace.org/autismheroes Understanding Lenny: A Book About a Boy with Autism – Natalie Abkarian Cimini wrote this book about her 2 boys that were diagnosed with ASD. Annual Golf Classic - June 14th, 2022 at Nobleton Lakes Golf Club. Proceeds will be going to our Young Adult and Respite programs.

To welcome three new local breweries to the Newmarket area we decided to brew this collaboration beer with Old Flame Brewing Co., The George Brew House and Turkey Shoot Brewing Co. Old Flame shared some of their House Lager Yeast with us which we paired with Canadian Barley and Ontario hops from Clear Valley Hops to help form the delicate balance in this clean, crisp and easy-drinking Pilsner. Life is sweet when these guys get together! Every year Jim, Dave and Rob along with 16 other neighbours tap their Maples and Dave's place becomes a sugar shack for 6 weeks! Over the years these guys have mastered making Maple Syrup, a neighbourhood tradition that conculdes with a neighbourhood party with the star guest being their Maple Syrup! All food is prepared or drizzled with their very own Sugaring Aurora Project Maple Syrup "from our maples to your table". This syrup is exclusive to those neighbours that partipate in the season - sorry not sold in stores...yet. #sweetneighbours
Ontario Provincial Police members attended the 2022 Toronto Comicon Convention during the weekend of March 18th, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. They were glad to see the community coming back out to support live events and were able to speak with a variety of people who were out enjoying the event. It was an excellent opportunity for the local police members to get back in contact with the public and have some positive engagement with the community they serve.

What does being a good neighbour mean to you? Being selfless. Doing things that will brighten someone else’s day, just because you can! Hold a door, say good morning, bring in your neighbours trash can, pick up litter, give a compliment or even just flash a smile. Where is your favourite place to go in the community? I love to go down to Main Street, Newmarket on a sunny day! Walking around, shopping, interacting with people and stopping for food and drinks along the way. What are your top 3 favourite movies? The Usual Suspects, Se7en, The Departed .

Shwarmaland, however I really enjoy Sushi Kui in St Andrews Plaza, the patio in the courtyard is such a hidden treasure. How long have you lived in the community? I’ve lived in Aurora for 22 years and can’t imagine living anywhere else. What is your favourite series to binge? Tough one… I’m a TV junkie. I can’t pick just one so here are my top 3 Ozark, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills What is one thing that most people don’t know about you? The first house I ever lived in was the first house I bought when I was 21 years old in Innisfil. I lived in apartment buildings my entire life until then.
