NEIGHBOUR COVER STORY Sport Aurora is in its 17th year as a sport service organization; one of the longest-standing Community Sport Councils in Ontario. The Organization has grown from 6 original Local Sport Organizations (LSO’s) and to include 40 member organizations, devoted to creating a ‘Quality Sport Community’ by increasing participation, building capacity, enhancing integration, and celebrating excellence in all aspects of sport participation. Some Milestones: • In 2011, Sport Aurora was awarded an Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) grant of $203,000.00 to deliver of programs and services. • In 2013 Sport Aurora founded the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame. • In 2015 Sport Aurora participated in the Mayor’s Task Force on Physical Activity to help make Aurora ‘Canada’s Most Active Community.’ and was awarded an OTF grant for $749,500.00 over three years. • Sport Aurora operates the annual Breakfast of Champions, the Sport Volunteer Recognition event as well as School and Club Athletes and Coaches-of-the-Year celebrations. • Public Programs continue such as the All Kids Can Play Program that provides funding to financially disadvantaged families. Our Women Leading Girls Program helps build leadership skills and engage young girls in activity. Our All Sport-One Day Program orients new participants to sport opportunities. • In 2022 the organization is focused on our Sport Concierge Service so the ‘guest experience’ can be enhanced for our sport tourism visitors to Aurora. A sport-wide Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee is working with our LSO’s to make Aurora an inclusive sport community. BUILDING A DECK – BACKYARD ENHANCEMENT A beautiful deck gives you the great outdoors without the need to venture too far from the comforts of home. When done right, a deck improves the appearance and convenience of your home and can add to its value. Homeowners should pay special attention to the plan for any new deck. To ensure the structure enhances your property, both now and in the future, a good design and quality materials should be your guiding principles. Whether you plan to build it yourself or are hiring a professional, consider the following: What are you using your deck for? Barbecuing, sunning and lounging, entertaining, supervising the children at play, enjoying nature and setting off a pool or spa are popular functions of a deck. Think about how you would typically use the space and plan your deck accordingly. How can you enhance your house and yard? A deck usually sits against your home and alters the landscape of your yard. Always keep the surroundings in mind and consider the combination of visible elements. Think about the view from the deck, and if it is raised, how it will look from ground level. How large and what shape? The deck should suit the scale of your house and yard. Going too large or too wide for the space can visually overwhelm and detract from the setting. May - The Month of Flowers As the saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers”. The month of May represents the return of everything that most of us like in the season of Spring; warm weather and blossoming flowers. It is a time where everyone can take long walks in the park, interact with friends and family, and take wonderful pictures. Among some of the flowers that grow in May, Leah’s favourite flower is Tulips that are full of warm, colourful petals. May is also a month where we celebrate Mother’s Day; a day on which we thank our mothers and mother figures for the sacrifices they make for us. They have a thankless job of raising us to be the people we have become and they deserve a lot of love and credit. Leah’s mom was born and raised in the Netherlands, a country most famous for their tulips. She was a practicing nurse growing up in the Netherlands, caring for so many people. After coming to Canada, she raised four wonderful children, Tom, Theresa, India, and of course, Leah. Leah has visited the Netherlands many times with her children to visit her mother’s childhood home in the Dutch province of Friesland, which had been bombed during World War II and has since been restored. Learning about her mother’s heritage was important to Leah because it made her think of her family’s history and how life had changed during that time. To all mothers and their families, Happy May and Happy Mother’s Day. Way to go Aurora! Over 1,700lbs of food was collected during the St. John Ambulance York Region food drive at Sobeys Aurora, in support of the Aurora Food Pantry.

The Aurora Legion honoured Vimy Ridge Day in April! Lori Hoyes and Bonnie Robertson led a beautiful ceremony. Vimy Ridge Day is a day to commemorate the deaths and casualties of members of the Canadian Corps in the Battle of Vimy Ridge, which took place during the First World War. The holiday has been observed annually on April 9th since 2003.

This popular family event has been on hold for several years but is now back with Disney’s LUCA (PG) as the feature movie! Join us on May 7 for an evening with Luca and his best friend Alberto on their life-changing summer adventure as we enjoy it on the big screen! The movie will be up on the familiar jumbo screen in the Pfaff Arena located at the S.A.R.C. The ice will be out of the arena, so come and join the fun. The movie will start at 6 p.m. but plan to come early for some pre-movie games and activities provided by Aurora’s Summer Camp staff. This event is FREE, but we always appreciate a non-perishable food donation which staff will be collecting for the Aurora Food Pantry. No registration necessary. Just come on out for the fun! At Rose of Sharon: • Youth can continue their high school education (up to 21 years) with onsite childminding in our Child Development Centre and transportation support at our Newmarket location. • Parents of any age (until baby reaches 6 months of age), can learn about prenatal nutrition and maternal care through All Babies Count which offers weekly workshops and counseling support. • Parents (up to 29 years) participate in online and onsite weekly workshops that offer parenting skills, personal and child development knowledge through our Living & Learning Together programs. • Youth have access to 1-on-1 personal counseling support and receive help coordinating with other community services. • Young families have access to our food security services which promotes family health and well-being with nutrition education workshops, personal consults and free home deliveries of groceries, baby food, practical supports and diapers. • New! The Centennial Celebration for Easter Seals Ontario Wine and Cheese took place at Cachet Supper Club March 30th. There was representation from both Newmarket and Aurora Town Council in attendance, as well as Mayor John Taylor and Deputy Mayor Tom Vegh. Easter Seals has been working together with their communities for 100 years, to bring awareness and raise funds for children and youth with physical disabilities to help them grow with independence, freedom and dignity.
On March 31st, Joe & Val's No Frills in Aurora along with the Aurora Optimist Club wrapped up the FILL THE FREEZER campaign for the Aurora Food Pantry. Delivering $1,000 of frozen food to fill the Aurora Food Pantry walk-in freezer!

How long have you lived in the community? I have lived in Aurora for 5 years. Where is your favourite place to go in the community? The Arboretum. I love to go for a walk and snap some pictures, there is always a great nature shot there. How do you giveback or pay-it-forward within the community? This is huge for me. I’m a big believer in volunteering. I will often pay for the person behind me at the drive-thru, I’m the Poppy Chair with the Aurora Legion and a proud member of the Optimist Club of Aurora. What is your most memorable community moment? Delivering the 2021 Remembrance Day service. Our Veterans have my utmost respect! What is your favourite song, artist/group or genre of music? I find music to be a cure all, I almost have music playing. I love all kinds of music but my go-tos are classic rock or country. .

What is your go-to local restaurant? Crow’s Nest – the perfect neighbourhood pub. The Buttery – a great family restaurant. How long have you lived in the community? For 40 years now, I moved here when the population was under 50,000 people and a four bedroom house was selling for $80,000 to $90,000. What are your top 3 favourite movies? To Sir, with Love – I watched this on the first date with my wife. One Magic Christmas. ET – First Sci-fi film with contemporary effects. What is one thing that most people don’t know about you? I am from a family of 15 – the 7th son of a 7th son. What is your favourite holiday to celebrate? The spirit of goodwill and generosity is in the air during Christmas and it is something I truly enjoy.

To have dinner with a fellow-artist who didn’t give up on their dreams and who created in the face of adversity and opposition would be a dream-come-true. (I hope to meet and get to know many living artists through the gallery and to help them get their name/heart/art out into the world). What is your favourite food? Pasta!!! I’m Italian, you know. I love pasta because there are so many different kinds and ways to make it and so many different sauces and toppings and ingredients that can be used to make so many beautiful dishes that everyone loves to come together and eat. Pasta, when done right, is so much more than just…pasta. Netflix or Night Out? Netflix, Prime, Disney+, you name it, I love cozy nights and taking in the visual creations of others. I love to learn. I love to be inspired. I love to give my mind a break and enjoy someone else’s story for a change. What does being a good neighbour mean to you? Being a good neighbour means (to me) that you have a connection with, and awareness of the community and the people around you. Opening the gallery and creating a safe space where the community can continue to come together, and where we can provide new opportunities for learning and creating. If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be? Travel more! I love to experience new places and people. I love to celebrate the differences in culture, from foods to architecture, language and of course art.
