The final game for the “She Shoots, She Saves” campaign was played on March 5th at the Ray Twinney Sports Complex in Newmarket! The girls from CYGHA were joined by Aurora Mayor Tom Mrakas and Newmarket Mayor John Taylor, who went head-to-head in a shootout then dropped the puck to start the game. Huge shoutout to Trish the campaign manager and these young women that are making our community a safer place! On International Women's Day The Key Advantage Team teamed up with the Rose of Sharon, providing an Empowering Women's Work Force Seminar to assist those preparing for interviews and to begin working again.

MAYOR MRAKAS Spring is here and it couldn’t feel better! As we welcome the sunshine and the warmer temperatures, we have a number of events planned for you to enjoy! First up is our annual Hello Spring event that takes place over the Easter long weekend. This is a family favourite for Aurorans with young kids and a great way to welcome spring - and the Easter Bunny. This event takes place at the Aurora Seniors’ Centre on Saturday, April 16 and will feature themed outdoor and interactive activities such as planting your own spring flower to take home, fishing for eggs, a hop-stacle course, nature toss game and more. You can even have your photo taken with the Easter Bunny! Preregistration is required for this popular event. More details are available at: aurora.ca/hellospring. Later in the month we also have our annual Community Clean Up. As the snow melts it is once again time to get our Town cleaned up and we need your help. Join us on Saturday, April 23 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sign up individually or as a group at cleanup@aurora.ca. Participants will receive a cleanup kit (while supplies last) that includes two garbage bags, a recycling bag, one pair gloves and safety tips. Hope to see you out at one or both events! Jake is a 10-year-old that had a hard time wrapping his head around what is happening in Ukraine. In order to process and channel his fear he decided to do something to help. He began to make buttons in hopes to raise $500 for the Canadian Red Cross. He reached his goal in his first 24 hours and as of today has raised over $10,000! Wimpy's Diner in Aurora was serving up $1 pancakes ALL DAY on March 1st, in support of Epilepsy York Region. We ran into longtime Aurora residents Peter and Cyndy, who were just being served their stacks! Another amazing initiative from Pan and the Wimpy's Diner team, located at 14834 Yonge St.
The Coldest Night of the Year event was hosted on Saturday February 26th. It was wonderful to see so many yellow hats around Fairy Lake! Inn from the Cold CRUSHED their goal of $80,000 and raised $123,429! BIG thanks to the many volunteers and sponsors that made it such a HUGE success!
We were invited to the The North Dance Company Competitive Gala, at the Royal Venetian Mansion in Aurora and were BLOWN AWAY by how talented these young ladies are! Congratulations to the dancers - you all did an incredible job! #auroracandance
Since 2011, the stories, creativity and budding expertise of the senior art classes of Aurora have been featured at the Mayor’s Celebration of Youth Arts (MCOYA) student art exhibition. On March 10th, the event continued it's legacy as an annual favourite filled with passion and skill. Life is sweet when these guys get together! Every year Jim, Dave and Rob along with 16 other neighbours tap their Maples and Dave's place becomes a sugar shack for 6 weeks! Over the years these guys have mastered making Maple Syrup, a neighbourhood tradition that conculdes with a neighbourhood party with the star guest being their Maple Syrup! All food is prepared or drizzled with their very own Sugaring Aurora Project Maple Syrup "from our maples to your table". This syrup is exclusive to those neighbours that partipate in the season - sorry not sold in stores...yet. #sweetneighbours

Raising the Flag Event - Flags that are decorated and hung in windows or on doors at many of our offices and supported living sites. 2022 Autism Heroes Event - Adam McEachern, a YRP Officer who has a 7-year-old son with autism, will be hosting his 2nd annual 24-hour Fitness Challenge on May 14th/15th, in support of Kerry’s Place. His goal is to raise $100,000! Registration is open: Kerrysplace.org/autismheroes Understanding Lenny: A Book About a Boy with Autism – Natalie Abkarian Cimini wrote this book about her 2 boys that were diagnosed with ASD. What does being a good neighbour mean to you? Being selfless. Doing things that will brighten someone else’s day, just because you can! Hold a door, say good morning, bring in your neighbours trash can, pick up litter, give a compliment or even just flash a smile. Where is your favourite place to go in the community? I love to go down to Main Street, Newmarket on a sunny day! Walking around, shopping, interacting with people and stopping for food and drinks along the way. What are your top 3 favourite movies? The Usual Suspects, Se7en, The Departed .

Shwarmaland, however I really enjoy Sushi Kui in St Andrews Plaza, the patio in the courtyard is such a hidden treasure. How long have you lived in the community? I’ve lived in Aurora for 22 years and can’t imagine living anywhere else. What is your favourite series to binge? Tough one… I’m a TV junkie. I can’t pick just one so here are my top 3 Ozark, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills What is one thing that most people don’t know about you? The first house I ever lived in was the first house I bought when I was 21 years old in Innisfil. I lived in apartment buildings my entire life until then.

I love to pay for the order of the person behind me in the drive-thru. A small surprise can change a person's whole day. If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be?
