What is Digital Accessibility? An accessible, or “ADA-compliant”, website can be used by those with visual, hearing, motor, and cognitive impairments. Website accessibility best practices apply to the design, content and code of the site. Common features like popups, carousels, chat tools, forms and eCommerce tend to have significant accessibility barriers. Elevage Digital uses the Website Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) as the technical standard for website accessibility. Why Care About Website Accessibility? Reduce Legal Liability: Lawsuits and settlements can cost $50,000 or more. Increase Customers: Studies have shown increased sales on eCommerce sites that improved accessibility. SEO: Accessibility coding best practices are SEO best practices. Tax Incentives: Small businesses can deduct the costs related to making their website accessible. Who Should Care About Website Accessibility? Everyone! The Americans with Disabilities Act applies to websites as “places of public accommodation”. Additionally, there are an increasing number of state and international laws that require accessibility. Website operators need to follow the accessibility laws based on where their customers are located, not where their business is located. State and local governments, boards and commissions are required to make their websites and digital content accessible. Organizations that receive federal funding must make their sites accessible. What About AI and Accessibility Widgets? AI tools have been trained on code for websites that are not accessible, so they are still not a reliable source of accessible code for your website, even when the prompt includes a requirement for accessibility. Approximately 25% of the websites that are sued each month have accessibility widgets installed on them. These products are not a reliable source of accessibility fixes for your site.

Girvan was stunned. Ironically, the interviewer then asked if she had a job for his son.

Soon after, FLAIR secured its first state contract. Other opportunities followed as businesses and organizations needed solutions, fast. A nonprofit preparing for a national convention faced a website crisis. Another organization needed a website for a press conference within a week. Girvan promised both clients their new websites would be launched within five days. They were skeptical. FLAIR delivered. Those moments shaped the agency’s reputation for solving problems quickly and exceeding client expectations. Referrals followed and FLAIR continues to grow. Today, Flair Communication has earned seven global website design awards, and Girvan has twice received Entrepreneur of the Year honors. As FLAIR prepares to expand to Florida’s Gulf Coast, the agency serves clients in 27 states and four countries, bringing national-caliber digital marketing expertise to local businesses. Girvan believes the secret behind that growth is what she enjoys most about her work. “It comes down to relationships,” she says. “We understand what a client wants to achieve, and we build the right strategy to help them get there.” FLAIR has created strong local jobs and paid internships, and during the pandemic, built a free online gift card platform to help regional businesses maintain cash flow. Now, Black Lace Boudoir is entering a new era entirely, as Rami describes it. She envisions something beyond four walls and a single-day experience — a business that moves, travels, and meets women at every stage of their lives. “Women want to see themselves as the heroine of their own story,” she says. An upcoming 40 Over 40 gallery event on April 25 — where clients’ portraits will be displayed like a fine art exhibition — offers the first public glimpse of where that vision is heading. Whatever comes next, the soul of the work remains unchanged. “My sole purpose is simple,” Rami says. “To help women feel good about themselves at any age.”

Stafford has always been the county in between, sandwiched between Woodbridge and Fredericksburg and often overlooked. Debra Balestreri decided to do something about that. In 2021 she founded Corgi Clay Art Center, a ceramic arts studio in the heart of Stafford built on a simple but powerful belief: every community deserves a creative space to call its own. “Where do my fellow community members go to be creative? Where do Stafford families go to have fun experiences together?” Debra asked herself while working from her home studio. The lack of answers became her motivation. Debra brings serious credentials to her vision. With a background as a Director of Education at a non-profit art center and years of teaching at both community and university levels, she is as accomplished as she is passionate. But what drives Corgi Clay is not a resume. It is a genuine love for ceramics and a deep commitment to the people of Stafford. Corgi Clay is intentionally different from paint-your-own pottery studios. This is a ceramic art center dedicated to teaching the full creation process, from working with raw clay to understanding form, function, and technique. Classes are offered for all skill levels, alongside firing services, artist residencies, and teaching opportunities. “I believe that if the community takes our classes, they will find a home in this medium like I did many years ago,” Debra shares. “They will find their people, their tribe. There is so much to love about ceramics and it is often misunderstood as a crafty pastime for kids, but it has so much more to offer.” For Debra, the joy comes from watching that connection happen in real time. Whether it is a beginner discovering the feel of clay for the first time or an experienced potter refining their craft, she finds deep fulfillment in guiding that journey. “We needed to create a space for this community to build wellness in our day-to-day lives, social cohesion, and civic engagement,” she says. When Jenny Jones began teaching at Dance & Gym Expressions (D&G) in 2000, she couldn’t have imagined that she would become the owner of the cherished dance and gymnastics studio two decades later. Yet, when founder Sandra Childress decided to retire in 2020, she entrusted her legacy to Jenny, who had transformed from employee to family over their years working together.

“I’ve always had a passion for dance and working with/taking care of younger children, so why not combine the two and teach dance?” Jenny shares, reflecting on her career path that began in high school. Her journey took an unexpected turn during college when an injury forced her to “chair dance” rather than perform. This experience sparked a new perspective: “This brought to my attention the idea of teaching dance that is accessible to all.” Today, D&G Expressions offers various dance and gymnastics instruction styles to students of all abilities, ages 1 to 99. Jenny’s commitment to inclusive teaching led her to become certified by Rhythmworks Integrative Dance to instruct students with special needs. The studio prides itself on a diverse staff trained not just in dance and gymnastics but also in supporting students holistically. “At D&G, our students aren’t just students, they’re family. We truly care about their physical, mental, and emotional well-being,” Jenny explains. This philosophy permeates everything at the studio, creating a nurturing environment where students feel reassured, confident, and above all, valued and supported. So many kids today feel isolated, anxious, out of sorts. We want to ensure we are a safe, comfortable place where they feel part of a group, can relax, and just be themselves.” The studio’s family-centered approach extends to Jenny’s own family. Both of her daughters have taught at D&G, and now her grandchildren take classes there. The studio hosts several community events throughout the year, including a Father-Daughter Dance, Parents’ Night Out events, and day camps during school breaks. For Jenny, the students remain at the heart of everything she does. “My students are my biggest inspiration! Their enthusiasm inspires me to continue learning more, so I can teach them more.” This dedication to continual improvement drives her to seek ongoing training to provide the highest quality instruction. Perhaps most telling is her genuine love for her work: “I truly enjoy going to work, seeing students’ smiling faces, hugs from the little ones, celebrating all the ‘I did it’ moments– I’ve always said, ‘I have the best job in the world.”

You walk out with something you made yourself. hen Dori Stewart looked out at Eden Try Winery that morning, she saw what she’d worked toward for years: Over 100 women—business owners, builders, healers, artists, educators, entrepreneurs—had gathered not to compete, but to celebrate. The energy was immediate and unmistakable: “The energy in that room was electric,” Dori Stewart, founder of FXBG Neighbors, said. “Over 100 women showed up, and you could just feel it the moment you walked in. There was this incredible mix of excitement, warmth, and genuine connection. Nobody was performing or posturing. Everyone was just there to celebrate each other — and that made all the difference.”

A whole write-up in a local magazine? How did I even get here? It was a very windy road, that’s for sure. But, the beginning of the road was design. I left high school at a younger-than-normal age knowing for CERTAIN I wanted to be an interior architect. After three years of trying to convince myself I didn’t hate it, I left my design program to serve in the Air National Guard. I thought I would come straight back to college after training… A few sets of military orders, one husband, and one baby later, I finished my bachelor’s degree… in social sciences - psychology! Another baby, 2 countries, 10 houses, another degree, 15 years as a military member and defense contractor went by and I still had the longing to make design my career. One day, after frustrating conversations with unfulfilling work, I said to my husband, “UGH! I just want to design. What if I started my own company?” To my surprise, he said, “What if you did?” And Cozy Llama Design, Co. was born. We’ve lived in 10 homes in 17 years. Each time we moved, there was some design problem to solve. Sometimes it was functional, sometimes it was aesthetic. For every house, I can tell you what worked and did not work; what made it easy to live there, and what made it difficult. We LIVED in 10 homes, but have you ever house-hunted 10 times? I’ve been inside hundreds of homes at this point. My eye naturally seeks out every good and bad thing. I catalog it all like I’m some kind of human Excel spreadsheet, gradually tallying the cost of remodel as I walk through a home. You might ask, “Alesa, why would you put that much effort into a house you lived in for less than 2 years on average?” Is the answer, “I just can’t help it” sufficient? I really CAN’T help it, but the real reason boils down to creating a Personalized, Harmonious, Cozy space where my family can rest and connect with each other. This core desire also drives every design for Cozy Llama. I believe good design is the first step to feeling calm and comfortable, even when your life is messy and stressful.
