In a world that never seems to slow down, finding a sanctuary of relaxation and rejuvenation is a true blessing. Bear River Massage Services, nestled in the heart of Stafford County, Virginia, is precisely that—a tranquil haven where the cares of the world melt away, and the healing touch of expert therapists leaves you refreshed and revitalized. Established in 2019 by owner Linda Osorio, this wellness center has quickly become a beacon of serenity for the community.

A Holistic Approach to Wellness

Bear River Massage Services offers a range of all-natural massage therapy services that cater to diverse needs. Whether you seek the soothing relief of a prenatal massage, the muscle-reviving benefits of deep tissue therapy, or the specialized care of medical massage, their licensed therapists are ready to assist you. But their offerings don’t stop there.

Cupping and acupuncture, performed by skilled acupuncturists, provide alternative methods of healing and relaxation. These treatments tap into ancient traditions to enhance your physical and mental well-being, aligning perfectly with Bear River’s holistic approach to wellness.

One standout offering that has garnered considerable popularity is Thai Yoga stretching. This practice combines gentle yoga stretches with massage techniques, promoting flexibility, stress relief, and improved circulation. It’s an experience that leaves clients feeling both invigorated and deeply relaxed.

Detox and Rejuvenate

One unique feature of Bear River Massage Services is their state-of-the-art infrared sauna. This therapeutic oasis is designed to help you detoxify and alleviate joint pain. The gentle heat penetrates deep into your body, promoting circulation and relaxation, all while you unwind in the cozy cabin-inspired setting.

For those seeking a more specialized form of detox, Bear River offers castor oil packs. This ancient remedy involves applying warm castor oil to the skin, helping to break down fatty deposits and nodules. It’s a gentle, soothing process that complements their overall commitment to natural wellness.

Mindful Relaxation

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s often difficult to find moments of true mindfulness and relaxation. Bear River Massage Services understands this struggle and makes it a core element of their practice. During massages, therapists encourage clients to take a few deep breaths, directing their focus inward. By guiding

Escape to Serenity: Bear River Massage Services

clients to consciously relax their minds and bodies, they create an environment where stress melts away.

Clients are gently prompted to visualize their muscles softening with each exhale, fostering a deeper state of relaxation. This mindfulness not only enhances the massage experience but also equips clients with a valuable tool for managing stress in their daily lives.

A Family of Healers

At Bear River Massage Services, the staff isn’t just a team; they’re a family. Owner Linda Osorio holds a deep affection for each member, fostering a supportive and nurturing work environment. The staff’s camaraderie extends beyond the treatment room; they regularly engage in yoga and meditation together, strengthening their bond and enhancing their ability to provide top-notch care.

Osorio’s own family is integral to the Bear River experience. Her sister, Alma, serves as the manager, ensuring smooth operations, while her mother, Mireya, welcomes guests at the front desk with warmth and professionalism. It’s this blend of professionalism and personal connection that sets Bear River apart.

The Origins of Bear River

Bear River Massage Services draws its name and inspiration from owner Linda Osorio’s proud Colombian heritage. Her last name, Osorio, translates to “bear” in English, while “rio” means “river.” These elements came together to form the name Bear River—a symbol of strength and tranquility.

The cabin-themed atmosphere was carefully crafted to transport clients to a serene mountain retreat. During the buildout of the space, the team embraced sustainability by repurposing materials wherever possible, embodying their commitment to both the environment and their community.

A Gift to Stafford County

Bear River Massage Services has become a cherished gem in Stafford County, Virginia. Linda Osorio and her team have created not just a business but a sanctuary where clients can escape the stresses of everyday life and find solace in natural healing and relaxation. VERNON GREEN: THE EMBREY MILL TRAILBLAZER

The journey from teenage parenthood to becoming a CEO is a remarkable testament to the power of determination, hard work, and unwavering ambition. Vernon Green and his wife Ceroma are initially from Poughkeepsie, New York. They met in their high school math class. Vernon described himself as a “bad boy troublemaker,” and Ceroma wanted nothing to do with him. Naturally, this made Vernon pursue even more. He found his life companion. She became his best friend and number one supporter of his ventures. They ended up having their daughter Tequa, before graduating high school. As they were expecting a child, Ms. Mary Steward, Ceroma’s mother, took Vernon in off the streets and treated him as one of her own. She is now his mother-in-law and an important part of the family. They were married upon graduation, shortly after Vernon enlisted in the Army. As many in this community know, life in the Army is a unique blend of structure, sacrifice, and camaraderie. Vernon began his career in the Army as a 31U communications. He then transitioned to a 31F during his second enlistment. He reached the rand of E-7 in ten years. It was during this time that he decided to become a Warrant Officer.

His Army career took him all over the United States and worldwide. He has four combat deployments, three of which were in Iraq. His last duty station before he retired in 2014 was in the Pentagon as a communications officer for the Army “Top 5.” This included the Secretary of the Army, the Under Secretary, the Chief, the Vice Chief, and the Sergeant Major of the Army.

Vernon retired from the Army as a Warrant Officer 3 and was more than ready for his next venture. The transition from military service to civilian life is a significant change that demands careful planning and self-reflection.

Vernon had a solid plan A, as is common in the National Capitol Region he had a government job lined up for him. As is also common, the in-processing is lengthy and cumbersome. While waiting for this job he started working for a small business. It was this exposure that would ultimately change Vernon’s life.

He had clear goals, he translated his military skills, he networked and soon realized that he could do this for himself. He knew he had the strength, discipline, and dedication he acquired in the military to start his own business.

He launched GCubed Enterprises, Inc. in April 2014 and had his first government contract by June. Presently, Vernon is the CEO of a multi-million-dollar company.

The most significant challenge was having the start-up capital and resources. He is grateful for his military retirement, which allowed him to financially support his family while figuring out how to pay for his business. He took many risks, and it paid off.

Photos by Karen Presecan Photography and the Green Family

© Best Version Media

If he could go back and change one thing, it would be to take some time off during his transition from the military to spend time with the family. However, his wife has supported him from day one. He remembers fondly, that even as teenagers, she would tell him, “You were meant to be somebody.”

When Vernon isn’t busy running his business, he switches gears and puts on his nonprofit CEO hat. His nonprofit G3 Community Services was founded in 2014. Their mission is to improve lives and strengthen the community by providing coaching, mentoring, and education.

The Green family has the distinction of being among the earliest residents in Embrey Mill, thus making them one of the most established members of the community. Their home was the fourth home to be built.

They have since added to their family with the addition of their two daughters, Cevon their middle child, and Jovani their youngest. Cevon and Jovani both attended Colonial Forge High School, with Jovani being a current senior. Jovani is currently the co-president of the Black Student Union, takes AP and DE classes, and hopes to be a doctor.

Vernon has always been involved in his daughter’s school and activities. He has chaperoned many field trips, and his company has donated computers to the robotics program.

The Green family loves their Embrey Mill neighborhood. Ceroma and Vernon can be found enjoying many neighborhood walks, especially walking their

three Shih Tzu puppies, Gizmo, Gadget, and Rosco. The neighborhood get-togethers include incredible community events like mazes, sleigh rides, and movies in the park.

Embrey Mill is unique in the sense that there are so many entrepreneurs and business owners in the neighborhood. The conversation can go from, “Can I borrow a tool?” to, “Do you know anyone with a clearance who wants to work IT?” and they deliver!

Balancing work and life is an ongoing process that requires mindful planning, prioritization, and self-awareness. The Greens ensure to get the whole family together at least once a year and go on a cruise. The military has instilled a love of travel in them, and something they continue to do.

A fun fact about the Greens: They are predisposed to break out into song any time of the day. Sometimes it feels like they are a walking musical.

Vernon Green has worked hard for everything he has. He had the odds stacked against him. Growing up in foster homes, being a teenage parent, being a young Soldier, being on deployments, and getting rejected by banks, here he is, not only is he an influential member of the Embrey Mill community, but he is also a man of action.

His company and nonprofit speak for itself, “mission first, people always.”

The Perfect Thanksgiving Tablescape

Hosting Thanksgiving this year and wondering where to start? While transforming your house into a Fall Fantasyland is not required, an understated but beautiful tablescape will set the perfect tone. Follow the below styling tips for a Thanksgiving dinner to remember!

Select A Color Palette

Opting for a range of oranges/tans/browns will give your table a rustic and traditional feel. For a more modern take, incorporate slate grey, dusty blues, or sage green. Going glam? Think ivory and pale pink with accents of metallic and shimmer!

Add Natural Elements

Fresh, seasonal wildflowers or plants not only look beautiful, but give off an inviting scent.

Faux florals and garlands have come a long way and can look extremely realistic. Bonus points-they can be reused many times over, therefore being an economical choice if you have the storage space!

Dried palm, eucalyptus, and pampas grass can be harvested in nature and repurposed for future floral arrangements.

Nothing says Fall like pumpkins! A cluster of assorted sized pumpkins and gourds look fabulous on a tablescape, or use a metallic marker to write names on each as a place card.

Choose Seasonal Décor

Items such as holiday-themed place settings can take up precious storage space for the 11 months out of the year when it is not in use. By keeping a set of neutral-colored plates on hand, you can use these throughout each season and compliment them with your colorful seasonal décor.

Stores like Home Goods, Marshals, and TJ Maxx are great for finding well-priced décor. Keep an eye out for candle holders, table runners, garlands, and string lights.

Pro tip: Shopping right after the holiday is the best time to pick up heavily discounted items on clearance. Just stock them away for the following year!

If you are in the mood to dig, thrift stores can yield many inexpensive and unique treasures.

Designate An Assigned Space For The Food Featuring an extensive amount of décor on your table does limit the free space available for your serving ware. If you plan on a fuller tablescape, use a buffet or counter space to place the food platters.

Prefer all the food within arm’s reach on the table? In this instance, pare down the amount of décor and lay out the serving dishes you will need for each item on the menu. Doing this in advance will ensure that you are not relegating Great Uncle Ned to the kid’s table to make more room!

Christina Carter is an entrepreneur and military spouse residing in Quantico, VA. She runs The Set Table LLC, a culinary company that creates family-friendly recipes to excite people about cooking! Her cookbook, The Set Table Favorites, was published in December 2022 and features over 60 recipes perfect for weeknight family dinners. Christina offers catering and bespoke tablescape design through her brand, Crudités All Day, servicing Northern Virginia, DC, and Maryland. For more information on Christina’s services please visit www.cruditesallday.com

Coquito

Holidays in my family mean cinnamon and cinnamon sticks are coming out of the cupboard. The aroma fills the house as my grandmother prepares her homemade coquito.

Coquito is a staple holiday drink in our household. No Thanksgiving or Holiday party is complete without one of these traditional homemade bottles.

Here is my coquito recipe. Enjoy a wonderful holiday season and if your make your own make sure to tag us! @fxbgneighbors

Ingredients

• 14oz sweetened condensed milk

• 12 oz evaporated milk

• 15 oz cream of coconut

• 1 tsp vanilla extract

• 1 tsp ground cinnamon

• 2 cinnamon sticks ¼ tsp ground cloves

• 12 oz of rum of your choice

Instructions

1. Combine all of the ingredients EXCEPT the cinnamon sticks, in the blender and pulse for few seconds until completely comes together and smooth.

2. Transfer the mixture into a glass jar with a lid, bottle, or a pitcher.

3. Refrigerate for up to 4 hours, until completely chilled throughout.

4. Shake it up before serving.

5. Pour into glasses and garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon and the cinnamon stick.

Note: I usually make 2 or 3 bottles the night before my Holiday dinner. This will make the drink a little more concentrated and the extra chill adds a delicious effect.

Do you have some fun cocktails to add to our cocktail corner, email them to lizhensel@ bestversionmedia.com

Meet Possum Ambassador: Amelia

Possum-bilities was founded in March 2022 by Karen Brace on the second floor of their current location in downtown Fredericksburg. Since then, the space has expanded to the first floor. This allowed a shop with 34 local artists to display and sell their work there.

Aside from hosting educational talks about rescued critters, Possum-bilities is a safe space for humans and animals alike. No one likes the attention more than awesome possum Ambassadors who can be found there Thursdays through Mondays. This is Amelia’s story.

Amelia (aka Melie) and her brother came to Awesome Possumz on June 19, 2023, from a lady who had kept them as pets for nearly three weeks. Possums have distinct personalities just like all other animals and right from the start, Karen could tell that the boy was timid and more careful. Not Melie. Each new enrichment item in their cage resulted in an immediate explosion of curiosity and adventure. She would instantly climb right to the top of each new branch, whereas her brother would wait down below to see if it was safe. So, she earned the name Amelia, after Ms. Earhart, who also loved adventure and exploration. Little did Karen know that the name would prove to be a little too accurate.

Amelia’s brother seemed to be a good candidate for release, so Karen put him in an outdoor enclosure, and sure enough, he

“wilded up” just fine. He has since been released. But Melie stayed super friendly. Then, one evening, Karen noticed she wasn’t putting any weight on her left arm, which earned her a trip to meet Dr. Jen at Blue Ridge Wildlife Center in Boyce, VA, the following day. Radiographs showed that she had a humeral fracture as well as hip disease (very shallow hip sockets). When Karen told Dr. Jen whom Amelia was named after, she said, “Because she thinks she can fly?”

Due to the severity of the break, Dr. Jen and her team couldn’t operate to put a pin in the arm, so they bandaged it and hoped for the best. After just a few days, the arm had already started to heal and after a week the bandage was changed and the bones were starting to become stable. Another week at Blue Ridge and Amelia’s progress was fantastic! Because of her injury and hip disease, she may have mobility issues in the future, so she earned herself a permanent place at Awesome Possumz.

To visit Amelia and all her awesome critter friends visit awesomepossumz.com or stop by their storefront at 211 William St., Fredericksburg, VA 22401.

PAVERS VS. CONCRETE: PROS AND CONS

PROS

PAVERS

If you’re considering hardscaping your outdoor areas, selecting between pavers and concrete is a significant decision. Each material has its own benefits and drawbacks, so it’s important to understand them to make an informed choice that meets your specific requirements and preferences. This article will examine the advantages and disadvantages of pavers and concrete to assist you in making the best decision for your landscaping undertaking.

AESTHETIC VERSATILITY:

Pavers come in various colors, shapes, and patterns, allowing you to create intricate and visually appealing designs for your walkways, driveways, or patios. This flexibility makes them a popular choice for a personalized and unique outdoor space.

REPAIRABILITY:

If one or more pavers become damaged, they can be easily replaced without disturbing the rest of the pavement. This makes maintenance more straightforward and cost-effective compared to concrete.

DURABILITY:

When properly installed, pavers are known for their durability and ability to withstand the freeze-thaw cycle, making them suitable for regions with extreme weather conditions.

BETTER DRAINAGE:

Paver installations typically have better drainage properties, as the gaps between pavers allow rainwater to seep into the ground, reducing the risk of puddles and erosion.

ECO-FRIENDLY:

Pavers are often considered a more environmentally friendly option because they allow rainwater to permeate the soil, reducing runoff and helping to replenish groundwater.

CONS

INSTALLATION COMPLEXITY:

Installing pavers can be more labor-intensive and time-consuming than pouring concrete. Proper base preparation and leveling are essential to prevent uneven settling or shifting.

COST:

Pavers are generally more expensive upfront compared to concrete. The cost can vary significantly depending on the type of pavers chosen and the complexity of the design.

WEED GROWTH:

The gaps between pavers can sometimes become a breeding ground for weeds. Regular maintenance may be required to prevent weed growth.

FREE ESTIMATES

We offer financing! 0% for 24 months for patios, decks, and screen porches

© Best Version Media

CONCRETE

PROS

SIMPLICITY OF INSTALLATION:

Concrete is relatively quick and easy to install, making it a cost-effective choice for large, straightforward projects like driveways and sidewalks.

SMOOTH SURFACE:

Concrete provides a smooth and even surface ideal for activities like skating, biking, or using wheeled equipment.

LOW MAINTENANCE:

Concrete requires minimal maintenance. Sealing it periodically can help extend its lifespan and enhance its appearance.

COST-EFFECTIVE:

Concrete is often more budget-friendly than pavers regarding upfront costs.

CONS

LIMITED AESTHETIC OPTIONS:

Concrete offers fewer design options compared to pavers. While you can add texture and color, it may not match the aesthetic variety of pavers.

CRACKING:

Concrete is prone to cracking over time, especially in regions with extreme temperature fluctuations or improper reinforcement.

DIFFICULTY OF REPAIRS:

Fixing cracked or damaged concrete can be challenging, as it often requires resurfacing or even complete replacement of the affected area, which can be costly.

POOR DRAINAGE:

Concrete does not allow for natural drainage, which can lead to water pooling on the surface and potential erosion issues.

When deciding between pavers and concrete for your landscaping project, it’s important to consider your individual needs, budget, and design preferences. If you value appearance, the ability to customize your design, and are willing to spend more initially, pavers may be the optimal choice for you. However, if cost-effectiveness and ease of installation are your top priorities, concrete could be the better option. To make an informed decision that aligns with your landscaping goals, it’s crucial to evaluate your project’s requirements thoroughly and seek professional guidance.

As we wrap up Breast Cancer Awareness Month, breast cancer can happen anytime at any age. This month, we are highlighting a local nonprofit that assists young women affected by breast cancer.

Here for the Girls, “H4TG,” was founded in July of 2007 with the mission; “To improve the lives of young women affected by breast cancer.”

What started with two young breast cancer survivors meeting at a retreat evolved into a thriving organization supporting young women to help them love and support each other through an unexpected and life-altering breast cancer diagnosis.

H4TG is celebrating its 17 years of “living life with an exclamation point” by continuing the tradition of producing a health guide disguised as a calendar. Since 2008, the calendar has featured young women with breast cancer, sharing their stories and inspiring everyone who views it.

The women in the H4TG Calendar represent:

1. Those we lost.

2. Those we serve.

3. Those who don’t even know they need us yet.

The calendar offers newly diagnosed women something more - hope – and access to an immediate sisterhood. The detachable Guide to Caring for Yourself is where important health information is shared for all women to be aware of.

H4TG sees success as having a young woman go to her appointments and put her health first! Early detection truly saves lives. Having members say they do not feel alone is something dear to their hearts.

At Here for the Girls, they say, “It takes a village to raise a non-profit,” and they are so grateful for their “village” of supporters who share their time, talents, and treasure with them to support their mission and the women in the community.

Support comes from businesses, community organizations, individuals, and families, all coming together to make a difference in the lives of young women with breast cancer and their families.

For different ways to support Here for the Girls, please visit their website and social media sites.

DIY Paper Pumpkin

Kids, you probably see your family getting ready or prepping for Thanksgiving this November. This is a fun activity to contribute to Thanksgiving prep in the form of a DIY centerpiece.

Materials:

• Either an empty toilet paper roll or a paper towel roll

• Orange construction paper

• Scissors

• Glue

• Green Marker

Directions:

1. Color your empty paper roll with the green marker to make your stem.

2. Get the orange construction and cut long strips, at least 12 pieces.

3. Grab your glue and start gluing one end of the strip from the bottom to the middle of the roll and continue doing that until you form your pumpkin.

4. Once you’re done, find the perfect place on the table to place your centerpiece.

Ingredients

• 1 box of your choice of white cake mix (I use Betty Crocker)

• 1 can of 12 oz evaporated milk

Tres Leches Cake

There are many ways to make Tres Leches Cake, translated to three milk cakes. This delicious dessert is perfect for any holiday potluck or fundraising event. You can easily make it in a big pan or mini pan depending on how you want to serve it.

• 1 can of 14 oz sweetened condensed milk

• ¼ cup of whole milk

• 1 tub of whipped cream

• Ground Cinnamon

• Fresh Strawberries, Sprinkles, your choice of garnish

Instructions

1. Follow the instructions of the cake mix to make and bake your cake.

2. Once the cake has cooled grab a fork and poke holes all around the cake.

3. Pour all three milk onto the cake, I start with the sweetened condensed milk, followed by the evaporated milk, and the whole milk last.

4. Place the cake into the refrigerator and let it chill for at least 1 hour (I usually do it overnight), to really let the milk soak in.

5. Once the cake has chilled and the milk has soaked, grab your whipped cream and spread it on the top of the cake.

6. Garnish with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon, fresh strawberries, or other garnished of your choice.
