The Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center recently hosted its Fourth Annual Holiday Pet Toy Drive, sponsored by the shelter’s volunteer group, Live.Love.Bark, which was successful in collecting more than 700 gallons of toys for dogs and cats. This year’s donations again surpassed the amount collected in previous years. Families across Long Island and even out of state made the trip to donate at the Shelter’s annual fundraiser which was held on Saturday, December 12th, to place treats and toys in the 100+ holiday stockings that hung on each animal’s cage. In addition to toys and treats, nearly 1000 pounds of pet food, an abundance of dog bone boxes, and an impressive amount

Christmas time is here. The days and weeks and months of planning and preparation, of shopping and wrapping and decorating and baking, have all led to this brief window of time, from Christmas Eve through Christmas Day, which lends itself to all sorts of magical moments and memories. These are the days we remember for years to come, the snapshots we savor, the recipes we pass down from generation to generation. Say what you will about the commercialism and chaos that has engulfed our society – this the time we
can recapture the true spirit of the season. Speaking of commercialism, anyone who attempted to purchase Adele tickets in the last week or so was faced with the reality that, unless you have thousands of dollars at your disposal to splurge on a pair of seats at MSG, you had best sit back and enjoy that $15 CD and accept the fact that live performances are becoming increasingly out of reach for the average consumer. For me, two straight days of manically refreshing my browser during both the advance sale and general sale led to nothing but wasted time and ample frustration. ‘Tis the season, indeed. The upside? In
the grand scheme of things, being deprived of live entertainment (temporarily, as I haven’t given up quite yet) isn’t the end of the world. As we prepare to turn the page on yet another year, we should give thanks for the important things – our health, our loved ones, the ability to celebrate with family and friends… perspective. And with that, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Various supporters and local companies also co-sponsored the event while others donated items or baskets to raffle at Toy Drive. Live.Love. Bark sold merchandise including both human
and pet clothing and 2016 calendars that brought in more than $2000.00, which will be used towards the well-being and care of the 100+ adoptable animals that currently reside at the shelter. The Annual Holiday Toy Drive was started in 2012, with the donation of holiday stockings for each animal at the shelter. Now sponsored by Live.
Love.Bark, the event has tripled in size, collecting much more than just toy donations. In its first year, the Toy Drive saw approximately 50 people visit the shelter to support the effort, whereas this year, over 300 supporters walked the halls, stuffing the stockings and visiting with the animals. SPECIAL DELIVERY - The Nassau County Emergency Ambulance Bureau Paramedics Association joined with Santa Claus to visit the pediatric patients at the Nassau University Medical Center and bring them a gift for the holidays recently. The medics presented the toys to the patients and their parents and were joined by Dr. Victor Politi, President/CEO of the NuHealth System/NUMC, as well as by Michael Mirotznik, chairman of the Board of Directors, during their visit. They pulled up to the main entrance of the hospital with Santa and the elves on a train followed by an ambulance.

Gold, silver and colored stars decorate the main hallway at West Islip’s Oquenock Elementary School, proudly bearing the names of the “shooting stars” who donated to a special cause that will gift a tricycle to a local child in need. Many children in the community have physical and cognitive impairments that limit their ability to easily play with their siblings and friends.
Oquenock staff and families focused on Share the Voice, a nonprofit program working to enhance the lives of disabled children, in order to make a difference. The school’s goal was to raise $1,500 for the construction of a tricycle featuring the necessary accommodations. The Share the Voice fundraiser ran through the month of November, with the goal achieved in just three weeks. As a
result, a West Islip child with disabilities will now have the opportunity to ride with their siblings and friends. “What a beautiful gift to give a child – the ability to enjoy their natural environments and gain independence and confidence,” said teacher Nicole Cagno-Angerame, the math adviser who suggested that Oquenock implement the program.

Decorating Deeds Fifth-graders in Justin J. DeMaio’s class at West Islip’s Bayview Elementary School participated in Operation Christmas Child this holiday season, decorating empty shoeboxes with wrapping
paper, and filling them with school supplies, fun toys, hygiene items and other gifts. The filled boxes will be delivered to children in more than 100 countries who lack basic necessities.
“Operation Christmas Child is just another way that my students are doing good deeds to make this world a better place,” said DeMaio.
Good Samaritan Hospital’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting was a huge success. Unseasonably warm temperatures brought more than 750 community members and hospital staff together for this year’s joyous event. Festivities included
a Snowman bounce house, visit from Santa and his elves, Christmas carnival and photo booth, refreshments and performances by St. John the Baptist High School choir and Babylon’s Royal Dance Company. The event concluded with everyone gathered
for the blessing of the nativity offered by one of the hospital’s chaplains, Fr. Augustine D’Souza and Sr. Ellen Moore, seen with Good Samaritan Hospital Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer Nancy Simmons.

Second Straight Championship West Islip High School’s varsity girls soccer team won the Suffolk County championship on November 4th, taking the Class AA title for the second year in a row. Finishing the season with an overall record of 16-2-3, the Lions also earned New York State Scholar-Athlete team status. Rolling through the
opposition in this year’s playoffs, the team defeated Northport 1-0 in the county semifinals on November 2nd, winning in penalty kicks after playing three grueling overtimes. They then beat Hauppauge in overtime 1-0 to win the county title on Nov. 4 at the Dowling College Sports Complex in Shirley.
Coach Nick Grieco also received Coach of the Year honors for both League III and Suffolk County. “Our 2015 girls soccer team continued the tradition of excellence in the classroom and on the playing field,” said Athletic Director Tim Horan.
