I find it truly fascinating how individuals can come away with such varying perspectives on the same topic, time and time again. Whether it be politics, societal issues or even something so lighthearted as this very column, everyone is entitled to their opinion – it’s just interesting how that view is arrived upon. Intelligent argument is one thing; shameless bullying quite another. For some, there doesn’t seem to be a middle ground. I suppose these polarizing issues are what make our world go ‘round. Discussion is the basis of everything, from school classrooms to kitchen tables to podiums

and soapboxes. Especially in this day and age of instant feedback, rarely can an opinion be expressed without an opposing argument cropping up almost immediately. Written forums are the best – or worst, as the case may be – since they afford people the anonymity of expressing often insulting, uneducated retorts. There is something about faceto-face conversation that affords a measure of respect, begrudging though it may be. Personally, I feel this world is full of enough tragedy and conflict without the need to touch on it in this column. South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers has always been a forum for celebrating our local school and community

happenings, of offering parents, teachers and coaches the opportunity to spotlight their children – the next generation of up-and-coming debaters. If you’re searching for controversy, there are plenty of mediums to find it. This need not be one of them. It seems to me that, whatever your lot in life, the best approach is always an objective one. Listen before you speak; think before you write; and respect before you reproach. Children learn what they see, and live what they learn; and there is more than enough hatred to go around without bringing it into the home or classroom, onto the field or stage. We, the adults, are the example. Let’s create one we can be proud to pass on.

“Our future is in the hands of our children so let’s give them everything we can” says Chris Fioravanti, recent 2015 graduate from West Islip High School, on his involvement with a community service program called “America Clicks”. Chris is currently enrolled as a freshman at Bentley University, a business school just outside of Boston, seeking a degree in finance while completing a service learning project. Through “America Clicks,” Chris goes to an elementary school and teaches children in grades kindergarten through third, about how to use basic computer software

and complete maneuvers that help advance their knowledge of technology. Even though he has a busy schedule and large work load, Chris allots three hours per week in order to create a lesson plan, teach the actual program, and evaluate the student’s skills. Chris explains that the hardest challenge that comes with the service learning project is keeping students interested and engaged. But he finds working with children the most rewarding because he loves seeing the progress and impact that he can make on a student’s life. During his time in West Islip, Chris accumulated over 300 community service hours through different student based organizations. He tutored younger students in Italian, served as the junior commissioner of “Keep Islip Clean”, and was a counselor at both a church and leadership camp. Chris also volunteered and fundraised for the “Thirst Project,” which helps supply clean drinking water to people in Africa. He even founded the

Environmental Club at West Islip High School after being inspired by his AP Environmental Science teacher, Kelly Sepe. The Environmental Club aims to keep both West Islip High School and the community environmentally safe by cleaning up litter and recycling bottles. Chris accredits his passion for community service due to his upbringing. He is so thankful for everything that he has and wants to give back to communities that in return have given so much to him. He says, “It makes me feel good that I am giving back to the town of Waltham (Bentley University’s location) because this community is giving me such a vital tool, my education, which will provide me with my future career.” Once his service learning project is completed, Chris will continue to do community service at Bentley University and in his home town. Chris is the son of Marie and Al Fioravanti of West Islip.

The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund held its 3rd Annual Rock & Bowl event last week in an effort to provide three scholarshi ps for students looking to continue their education and promote aware ness among young people not to drink and drive. Over the past three years, the fund has offere d close to $10,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors at the Copia gue Memorial High School. This year, we hope to expand by offering the awards to other districts. Before Brittney was killed by a drunk driver only two days after high school graduation, she was always found helping some body, and even after she’s gone, she still is. The Fund and the scholarships are simple; being a 501c3 not-for-profit, all the money raised goes into a managed fund similar to your retirement 401k. This money earns interest and dividends. This earned money then goes to the awards, leaving the principal amou nt there for many years to come.
