The West Islip Board of Education has unanimously adopted a resolution to present a capital project bond referendum to the community for voter approval. The bond vote will take place on Tuesday, November 17th, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. at West Islip High School. The Board and administration carefully analyzed the list of districtwide repairs and renovations needed, along with the concerns shared by staff, parents and community residents. The district’s schools are all 50 years old or older and were not built to support the needs of today’s students. After working closely with the district’s architect, the Board developed the scope of work to be included in the proposed bond referendum.

Finned Wit & Wisdom By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Here I come to save the day, yet again, with my witty observations on life from within the confines of my bowl. The Human, it seems, is busy getting herself ready for a wedding – one, I might add, that I was not invited to. And here I had my bowtie and top hat all picked out for the occasion. How rude. I suppose this means my dinner will be late too. What does a fish have to do to maintain a steady feeding schedule? Sometimes it’s twice a day, sometimes once… four flakes, five… sometimes only a couple when I knock the rest down to the gravel with my fins, never to be seen again. Speaking of which, these
greedily inhale them, barely pausing to chew in between. From my experience, you have to savor these feeding times, since you never know when the next one may come around. Sort of like the Mets and their quest for the World Series. I haven’t been around long, but I hear this is a pretty rare occurrence. Me, I tend to root for the Marlins. Us fish gotta stick together, after all. But, I suppose I’m a New Yorker, officially. Maybe my Human will buy me some blue and orange gravel so I can root, root, root for the home team…you know, on our trip to the pet store that I’ve been promised since August. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, signing off.

Eventually, after days of starvation {10 hours or so} I give up hope, putting myself to bed with no supper. But wait, is that a light I see? I groggily press my nose against the glass, dimly making out the shadow of my Human, apologizing for getting home so late. I sleepily bounce from one branch of my plant to another, aimlessly chomping at imaginary flakes, before putting myself back to bed, thoroughly unsatisfied. I suppose I’m always hungry though. I have no concept of time, or quantity. As many times as I find flakes fluttering into my bowl, I will

Bond Vote Set Continued From 3 An approved bond will support major repairs and improvements in the areas of science labs, gymnasiums, auditoriums, athletic facilities, safety and security, technology advancements, and infrastructure repairs and upgrades. The scope of work included in the bond is $49,961,280, of which 70 percent of the cost will be funded through New York State Building Aid. Essentially, taxpayers will pay approximately $15 million for nearly $50 million worth of work. For the first five years, the cost to the average homeowner will be $60 to $80 per year, or $5 to $7 per month. After the first five years, due in part to the rolloff of previous debt, it is projected the cost to the average homeowner will actually decrease. An approved bond referendum permits the district to borrow money up to the amount specified in the voter-approved capital project bond referendum. The district cannot borrow more than is authorized by voters and cannot use the money for purposes not authorized by the voters. A bond permits the district to take advantage of historically low interest rates and to keep the tax impact to residents to a minimum. A bond also enables the district to complete the scope of work in a more timely and cost-efficient manner and ensures that new homeowners moving into the community pay their fair share over the length of the bond. The proposed bond referendum represents an important decision about the future of the school district and community. Please remember to vote on Nov. 17. Youth Board Appointees Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter announced that the Town Board approved the appointment of four adults and two youths to a four-year term on the Islip Youth Board. The Islip Town Youth Bureau and the Islip Youth Board administer three not-for-profit agencies, which provide youth services throughout the town. These agencies include: Youth & Family Counseling Program,
Youth Enrichment Services, and the South Shore Community Organization. “The Islip Youth Board does outstanding work within the Town of Islip community helping our youth agencies to strive. We are grateful for all that the Youth Board does and are sure that the six individuals recently appointed will make our youth agencies that much more successful.
The adults appointed are: Guy Leggio, of Bay Shore, a mason and vice president of the Bay Shore School Board; Dawn Hargraves of Hauppauge, an attorney; Rich Klein of West Islip, a physician; and Jaclyn Mustachio of Holbrook, a student at Stony Brook University. The youths appointed are: Alexander Ortmann of East Islip, and Taylia Hinds of Brightwaters.

All-National Selection West Islip High School senior Hannah Kim was recently designated an All-National musician by the National Association for Music Education, a prestigious honor reflecting her immense skill and dedication. Joining more than 670 of the most musically talented high school students in the United States, Kim will play in NAfME’s 2015 All-National Honor Concert Band at this year’s NAfME Biennial
Conference in Nashville, Tennessee on October 28th. Directed by acclaimed guest conductors, the AllNational band, chorus and orchestra ensembles will perform at a gala concert for an audience of thousands in the Presidential Ballroom of the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville. A key member of her high school’s wind ensemble, marching band, pit orchestra and jazz ensemble, Kim possesses
wide-ranging musical talents, playing bassoon, saxophone and piano as well as being a vocalist. She was previously selected for the New York State School Music Association All-State Symphony Orchestra, the New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education All-County Band and the Suffolk County Music Educators Association All-County Band and Orchestra.

Currently, Cancer is responsible for 20,000 deaths a day. 20,000 lives lost to this illness. First off, I want to apologize for the morbidity already displayed one sentence into this essay. If you’re looking to read about average summer vacation stories, or the day someone won their first trophy, I would advise you to stop reading. I don’t write this to receive sob stories from countless people, or even gain sympathetic condolences. I just want to put life into perspective. I want to inform you readers of the true and raw meaning of life, and what many people have forgotten over the years while in the midst of everyday life. The pursuit of happiness is defined as a fundamental right mentioned in the Declaration of Independence to freely pursue joy and live life in a way that makes you happy. I think many people
have forgotten this idea, and it saddens me to feel the need to write this, informing people on how to truly live. I lost a dear friend of mine recently. She was a family friend, but I definitely considered her family - like an aunt. She was diagnosed with cancer about a year ago, and it only took a few months for the cancer to completely demolish her body. It’s not fair how she died so suddenly and irrationally. Life works mysteriously like that. I can’t quite put into words the feelings I encountered the day she died. But that’s a whole other story. One regret I have whilst she was still alive was not laughing and smiling a little bit more when I was still in her presence. I’m a glass half full type of person. I like to see things in positive perspectives. Life is way too short to be anything but happy.
In my eyes, if you have a roof over your head and food on the table, you’re lucky. The countless complaints that our society has adapted to consider “normal” is absurd… Now, I’m not going to lie and say I’ve never complained before. Hell, I probably complain a little too much. But luckily, I have the decency to step back and view the bigger picture in terms of the pursuit of happiness and pure joy and all of that cheerful nonsense. Live a little. Don’t let the little things bring you down. Be grateful for family and love and joy and laughter and all that good stuff that doesn’t cost a penny. Happiness is a free commodity. Only God knows when your life is coming to an end, so take advantage of every day. Say your “I love you’s” and give your biggest hugs and don’t regret a thing. Life is way too short - I can’t stress this enough.

I think it is important for taxpayers to understand the portion of their annual tax bill that actually goes to the town is only 4.73%, one of the lowest of all the towns in Suffolk County,” Supervisor Carpenter continued. During the past several months, Supervisor Carpenter met with all the members of the Town Board, Commissioners and department heads to engage them in the process of developing a very thorough budget report for 2016. The Town of Islip’s 2016 Operating Budget is tax cap compliant. This cap limits the increase of the total tax levy to the lesser of 2% or the rate of inflation. Limitations due to this tax cap present the challenge of maintaining services at a time when revenues are stagnant and fixed costs such as pension payments and health insurance benefits are increasing. The 2016 Budget for the Town’s three major funds reflects a very modest increase of 1.54% over the 2015 budget,
which translates to an additional $19.15 per household. The services that are provided to Islip Town residents include: Administrative, Assessment, Building and Grounds Maintenance, Vehicle Maintenance, Traffic Safety, Tax Collection, Town Clerk, Public Safety, Parks and Recreation, Water Management, Youth Services, Highway Repair and Snow Removal. These funds have a few recurring sources of revenue, including the Property Tax, various Fees for Services, the Town’s share of the Mortgage Tax proceeds and Interest Earned on the Town’s deposits. However, since the economic recession, the Mortgage Tax proceeds and interest earnings have decreased, thus putting a drastic burden on the Town of Islip taxpayers. “Our top priority is to hold the line on taxes and deliver a fiscally conservative, efficient and transparent budget to the taxpayers of our town and that is what I believe we have done with this budget,” Supervisor Carpenter remarked.

Turkey Drive Benefit Long Island’s largest food drive event, the 7th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank, will take place on Wednesday, November 18th, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage. Long Islanders are asked to drop off frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items (except those in glass containers), supermarket gift cards or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest which will then help supply Thanksgiving holiday meals to the more than 300,000 hungry Long Islanders through its distribution
network of 570 food pantries, soup kitchens and other feeding programs on Long Island. “Bethpage Federal Credit Union is an avid supporter of Island Harvest and its mission to end hunger on Long Island,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage. “For the past six years, the annual Bethpage Turkey Drive has had an immensely positive impact on the Long Island community, who year after year come out to help their neighbors experiencing food insecurity. November was designated as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month by President Ronald Reagan in 1983. Since then, the recognition was enhanced to also honor the Caregivers who aid Alzheimer’s patients. In honor of this national event, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) is reminding everyone that nearly 60,000 Long Islanders suffer from the disease each day. Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative brain condition that affects cognitive
function and consequently the ability to perform day to day tasks. At the time of President Reagan’s designation, fewer than two million Americans suffered from the disease. Today, that number has soared to more than 5.4 million people. Alzheimer’s care can be very costly both for patients and their families, who often serve as the primary caregivers. There are presently more than 15 million people caring for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients throughout the
country. This includes not only assisted living professionals, but also children, spouses/partners, friends and neighbors. In 2015, Alzheimer’s and other dementias will cost the nation $226 million in both medical and general care services. In an effort to increase awareness and support for Long Islanders and their families who are affected by the disease, ADRC is hosting two events in November. This includes the organization’s Second Annual Give from
the Heart “Athletes for Endurance” competition, which is being held at gyms across Long Island throughout the month of November. This event promotes physical fitness, considered a vital element to fighting dementia, by challenging endurance athletes to do as many push-ups as possible. This year’s series is in memory of Dorothy C. Camilleri, who passed away in 2013 after battling Alzheimer’s disease. To sponsor a team or individual, or to make a

Mercy Center held its fifth annual run/walk over the bridge for homeless teens at Smith Point Park on Saturday, October 17th. Participants from all over the Island came out to support the cause and enjoy the beautiful and unique 3.1 mile course over the bridge. The most senior runner was 79 and the youngest was 6; both belong to the running club North Country Road Warriors. They were among 20 other club members who came this year to run and walk the event.
