Beach Drive, which provides access to St. John the Baptist High School, Good Samaritan Hospital and West Islip Beach, was in dire need of repairs to the roadway and drainage infrastructure. The Town of Islip Department of Public Works recently completed those improvements.

The Islip Town Board today voted to formalize its Language Access Policy in an effort to accommodate all Islip Town residents, regardless of the language they speak. Customer service. It’s a thankless job, to be sure. But for those of us on the other side of the phone, it can be downright maddening. Over the course of the last several weeks, I have had the good fortune of being in touch with representatives from three major companies and one federal agency. As polite as the majority of them have been, there is simply no substitute for good oldfashioned efficiency. From poor line conditions that make it sound as though you’ve been patched through to another planet, to computer screens that keep
“freezing,” necessitating the dreaded May I put you on hold for 5-7 minutes? request, it does make you wonder how any issues are ever resolved. What always gets me is the directory, which instructs you to select your issue and what department you would like to speak with; yet, once you actually reach a human after “longer than normal wait times,” they never seem to know what your call is in reference to. And after repeated calls, and numerous notations on the account in question, it would stand to reason that you shouldn’t have to re-explain the entire problem from the beginning. And yet…
I try to be patient through it all, telling myself it’s not their fault that they work for a completely inefficient organization. They simply have a job to do, as we all do. Flipping out never sped the process along. At the end of one of these service calls, which stretched over approximately three hours (yes, you read that correctly), the woman on the other end actually took the time out to thank me, saying my patience showed a lot about my character. Well, if dealing with customer service builds character, I think I’ve reached my quota for quite a while!

The students were not the only ones who returned to school this month at Saints Cyril and Methodius in Deer Park. With the start of the new school year, SSCM firstgraders shrieked with joy over the return of their class pet. Nibbles, a 1 year-old Roborovski Dwarf Hamster, came to SSCM at the start of the last school year, when she was just 5 weeks-old. Secondgraders joined in for a fun and informative lesson on everything from hamster care to favorite foods and those that are dangerous to hamsters. Brittney Walsh was born on January 25th, 1994, She was tragically killed by Michael Grassing, a drunk driver, in Lindenhurst on June 24th, 2012, just two days after high school graduation. Brittney enjoyed soccer, dance, track and field and hanging out with friends. She graduated with an Advanced Regents Diploma, and planned on running Track at York College. Two years ago, a Scholarship Fund was created in her honor. The criteria is as follows: • Girls Track + writing component • Girls Soccer + writing component • Writing Component The writing portion is 250 words of the funniest thing you have ever seen or done. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund was built
upon donations from the local community, and was put into a mutual fund to grow, and to generate the scholarship money. Over the past two years, the Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund has given out $5,000 to graduating seniors and is looking to expand.
