I have a beach blanket; well, to be clear, it’s more of a moving blanket that has admirably served its purpose on the beach, the grass… pretty much anywhere it’s been needed over the last year and a half. Until last Monday. Last Monday, my friend and I decided to attend one of the many free summer concerts on the schedule this season at Massapequa’s John J. Burns Park. While the forecast called for rain and possible thunderstorms later in the evening, the concert remained set to go off. We arrived early, set up the aforementioned blanket and a couple of chairs, and waited. Light drizzle had begun to fall on and off at this point. Several local legislators appeared to make the

obligatory introductions on stage and stated that, due to the impending storms, the show would begin a bit earlier than scheduled. Perfect. Headliner Bret Michaels took the stage shortly after, and was greeted by an ecstatic crowd, most clutching their umbrellas in earnest, as the rain began to fall harder. About a half dozen songs in, the torrential downpour commenced. At that point, it became clear that, despite the best intentions, the show would simply not be able to go on. The house lights (or lampposts, as the case was) went up, the power to the jumbo screen was cut, and the crew desperately tried to cover the speakers and electronics as the mad dash to the parking lot began. Ah, but there still

remained the small matter of the blanket. The gigantic, now completely saturated, blanket, which now weighed approximately 50 lbs. as we attempted to roll it up and drag it to the parking lot – all the while trying to sidestep the massive mud puddles which had formed in a matter of minutes. As I contemplated chucking the entire thing into the nearest garbage pail, the absurdity of the whole scene suddenly struck me, and I became hysterical with laughter. “The next time they forecast ‘a chance’ of anything, let’s do ourselves a favor and leave the blanket in the trunk.” As I write this, four days later, the blanket remains draped over my deck, drying in the afternoon sun. It’s still a bit damp.

Preserving Our Land Lately, there has been a lot of talk over the issue of environmental conservation. It is crucial to the well being of our ecosystem that we look after all of nature’s life. Maintaining the levels of all animals, big or small, is no easy task, but it must be done. In order to ensure a healthy, abundant environment for everyone, it is a necessity to undertake the protection of quite literally, everything. As someone who lives on Fire Island, I see everyday how deer, birds and even insects are affected by litter, pollution and the overall negative human impact. I also live within a

preservation on this little Barrier Island. Hurricane Sandy effectively cleaned the area out, giving way to the rise of many species that signal a healthy ecosystem. On this preservation, the frog population is beginning to ﬂourish. This is a good thing because the presence of frogs have always meant a thriving environment teeming with food, vegetation and, most importantly, other healthy wildlife. Dolphins are becoming an ever present fixture on our seashore. Even with the ongoing sickness that the dolphins must endure, their populations seem to be doing well, especially this close to shore. A few weeks ago, a sea turtle

was spotted as well. These unprecedented sightings have signaled a positive change in the way we treat Mother Nature. Even as these animals are around now, it is crucial to their survival that we protect them. In addition to looking after ourselves, we should take care of the rest of Long Island’s wildlife. Classes will be held on Wednesdays, September 10th, 17th, October 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th, and November 5th, in the Town Board Room at Islip Town Hall, 655 Main Street, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.. The Town offered this program to residents in the fall of 2012 and had great success, educating approximately 50 job seekers. Immediately following the completion of the program, there was a 26% job attainment rate with more than 50% of the group actively interviewing and generating more than 25 interviews throughout the eight weeks. In the two months following completion of the Boot Camp, the percentage went from 26% to 33%, and then in five months time, increased to 46%. People who completed this program found interviews and jobs in industries such as insurance, healthcare, marketing, information technology, and various administrative positions. “Though the economy may have improved slightly, these are still very trying times. It is imperative that we offer any assistant we can to those struggling to find a job within our Town,” said Supervisor Tom Croci. “Some of our most talented residents are unemployed simply because they lack certain networking opportunities. Our goal is to teach job seekers these skill sets and encourage them to stay confident and determined in the quest

It took so many years. To dispose of it will be quite rough - at least for her in tears. For each treasured trinket is a sweet memory Of her youth, of her husband, and her children - there were three.

A sweet blue baby blanket from her first baby born. It may be frayed and tattered and just a little torn. She does not want to part with it for any price, you see. Though now adult, he’ll be her baby for eternity. So now she clings to each old thing feeling quite forlorn. For people gone now from her life, she still has to mourn. They will be coming with a dumpster and then the moving truck. She feels as if her life is now running quite amuck. She hurries to another pile and opens the next box. A blond curl tied with ribbon - it’s the second baby’s locks. Someone picks up an old knickknack and offers her ‘a buck.’ And now she feels as though she’s been truly struck.

You can’t keep all these things they tell her - there just isn’t that much room. The new place will be better for you; her heart fills with dread and gloom. Roses pressed in a book to preserve their bloom, She remembers as a gift from her loving groom. She found things she had forgotten and didn’t know she had. Some things made her feel good; others made her sad. The clay handprint ashtray someone made in camp The high school woodshop project that had become a lamp. She found handmade greeting cards “To my Mommy and my Dad.” If this was better for her, why did it feel so bad? This was her life piled up outside, she wanted to declare. She was afraid of all the changes and moving now elsewhere. Don’t make me feel like I’m a problem - I’m your mother after all. Don’t be impatient with me or bothered when I call. She wanted them to know her feelings and to let her know they care. Please listen to me - my memories I need to share!

Stony Brook University will add six new electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS) on main campus by this summer, bringing the total number of EVCS at on campus to 10. The new charging stations compliment the University’s four existing stations, which are located at the Advanced Energy Center in the Research and Development Park installed approximately three years ago. These stations are being added to support a growing number of students, faculty, staff and visitors who drive plug-in vehicles and are seeking energy resources while on campus. Each station will supply electricity to two parking spaces in the following parking lots; Stadium parking lot: Administration parking garage (on the 3rd level); Life Sciences lot; Heavy

Engineering lot; and, near the Life Sciences 2 parking lot located off of Lake Drive. The existing EVCS located in the Administration parking garage stations were provided to the University through Governor Andrew Cuomo’s 2013 Charge New York Initiative. The goal of the initiative is to create a statewide network of up to 3,000 public and workplace charging stations over the next five years and to put up to 40,000 plug-in vehicles on the road during that period. SBU charging station fee is $3 per hour, per space; instructions are located at the station, and all vehicles parked in an EVCS space must be charging. “The new charging stations have been installed in close proximity to the Academic Mall, thereby encouraging our

On July 13th, Liz Holzknecht, a Mineola resident, presented a check in the amount of $3,500 to Bridget Costello, Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. Ms. Holzknecht participated in the Runner’s World Heartbreak Hill Half Marathon in Boston on June 8th as a way to raise funds and awareness for the camp. Ms. Holzknecht and her family have a special connection to Camp PaQua-Tuck. Her sister Kate attended the camp’s respite

weekends and summer sessions for eight years. On September 2013, Kate passed away at the age of 23. The camp held a special memorial ceremony in her honor and, on March 28th, the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws held the Spring Fling Joy Prom in her honor. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help

LEGO DONATION - A local art teacher at the The Developmental Disabilities Institute in Smithtown, John Lavelle, brightened the day for many pediatric patients at Good Samaritan Hospital when he donated life size Lego characters he made with his art class. Mr. Lavelle took a tour of the hospital’s unique pediatric unit which includes a colorful outdoor rooftop therapeutic garden that is adjacent to a special playroom. Here, children can play in the fresh air, participate in horticultural therapy, leave their rooms and have access to toys and activities and spend a few minutes just being a kid instead of a patient.

Training in the Immediate Disaster Case Management Program (IDCM) was held last month at Family & Children’s Association, one of Long Island’s largest health and human service organizations, to prepare staff and individuals from partner agencies to become Case Managers and Case Supervisors. These case managers/supervisors will be able to quickly mobilize to offer assistance in the event a presidentiallydeclared disaster and/or support is requested by the Governor. The IDCM

is a federally funded program administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in partnership with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children and Families (ACF). Participating in the three-day training alongside Family & Children’s staff, were representatives from Hope Worldwide, the Arab American Family Support Center and several other

nonprofits. As part of the IDCM Team, Family & Children’s staff may be deployed for up to 14 days. According to Dr. Jeffrey L. Reynolds, President/CEO of Family & Children’s Association, “participation and leadership in the IDCM is in keeping with our mission is to protect and strengthen Long Island’s most vulnerable children, seniors and families. We’re here to serve Long Islanders in crisis whether it is financial, emotional or environmental.”
