West Islip was chosen by the Where Angels Play Foundation to receive a new playground honoring one of the twenty-six victims of Sandy Hook Elementary School. The students cleared debris from the beach and surrounding area. The playground was built last weekend.

The tournament is a first of its kind on the East Coast of the United States will award a total prize purse of $120,000 and is one of only 11 Grand Prix Gold tournaments world-wide according to officials. A badminton tournament of this magnitude has never been held on the East Coast of the United States. The tournament was moved from Orange County, California where it has been staged for the past 18 years, according to the U.S. Open Tournament Committee. Music Teacher Workshop

LIVING MUSEUM - The 7th and 8th grade students of Our Lady Of Lourdes School in West Islip created a Living Museum in art class. The school hallways were transformed into an art museum showcasing Masters of Art Painters. The students dressed up as the artists and displayed the art work of masters such as Van Gogh, Picasso and Leonardo Da Vinci.

Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, the acclaimed summer arts day camp whose programming has long included professional education in the latest techniques for arts educators, will present an expanded version of its 2013 Finale workshop for music teachers. Titled SmartMusic and Finale: A Program of Professional Development in Music Technology, the unique 5-day professional development class combines SmartMusic and Finale, two stand-alone applications created by different companies but designed to work together, to become a powerful teaching tool. It will take place on the 200-acre woodland Usdan campus from Monday, July 14th to Friday, July 18th, from 4 to 7 p.m. daily, and will be taught by certified SmartMusic and Finale

clinician David Dolgon. The course fee is $400, and a certificate of completion will be provided for in-service credit. Usdan Center is located at 185 Colonial Springs Road in Wheatley Heights (Huntington) Long Island. To register, go to www.usdan.com/ workshops. Finale enables composers, arrangers, musicians, teachers, students and publishers to create, edit, audition, print and publish musical scores. It is the industry standard in music notation and composition software. David Dolgon is a clinician for MakeMusic!, the creators of Finale. He has presented staff development workshops

for the NY State Council of Administrators of Music Education, school districts and county organizations, in addition to teaching both graduate courses and music theory to high school students. Topics to be included on SmartMusic include: teaching students to practice effectively and efficiently, preparing for NYSSMA evaluation, exploring Content, creating gradebooks, Common Core, sending and receiving assignments and creating listening lessons. Topics for Finale will include: creating a document for export into SmartMusic, creating student learning objectives and testing in SmartMusic, creating an Mp3 of Finale documents, creating Kodaly stick notation documents, Finale Worksheets and scanning music into a Finale notation file.

A Return To Summer On The Shore

With every passing day, it becomes clearer that summer is almost in full swing. The beaches are filling with tourists, and the ferries are packed! As a strong Memorial Day Weekend predicted, this summer is turning out to be very busy. It is my fifth summer working at Maguire’s Bayfront Restaurant in Ocean Beach. My first few shifts of the summer have been crazier than in years prior. We are already seeing a rush of people eager to take part in the festivities associated with a warm summer. Thus far, it seems as if the lull created by

Hurricane Sandy has finally ended. People are returning to Fire Island slowly, but steadily. Only time will tell, but it looks as if we are experiencing a return to normalcy. Dolphins can already be seen swimming off the beach, and they are plentiful. As we kick off the summer, it is important to remember that Fire Island is not just a place to have a fun weekend; for many, like myself, Fire Island is the place that we call home. It is a place where memories have been formed. Each year, we see drunk people and other party animals who do

not take consideration for the environment or Fire Island as a whole. As an advocate for nature preservation, this truly saddens me. The state of both our beaches and our infrastructure has worsened in the past few years. Even though I’m just a kid, these changes are pretty obvious. Everywhere you look, degradation is found. As you head to the beach this summer, remember to pick up your garbage and protect wildlife. This will ensure that we will have great summers every year.

Lawlor Memorial Golf Classic and Dinner at the Huntington Country Club, located at 483 West Main Street in Huntington. The sights, sounds, aromas and flavors of Greece are coming again to Hamptonites and visitors to the East End. The Hamptons Greek Festival will take place again this year, July 10th-13th, on the grounds of the newly built Greek Orthodox Church of the Hamptons. Continuing a 29 year tradition, the Festival will highlight authentic Greek dishes and pastries, Hellenic youth dance performances, and live Greek Music nightly. Thousands have indulged in the rich flavors and hearty portions of the Festival’s menu. Passing down the culinary traditions of their parents and grandparents, the organizers of the 2014 Hamptons Greek Festival offer Greek style chicken, pastitsio, spanakopita, souvlaki, gyro and much more. Complementing the main fare are Greek pastries that were praised by Newsday who wrote that its “favorite source in Astoria doesn’t hold a candle, frankly, to the kourabiedes (butter cookies) made by the Church ladies. Families with children of all ages are welcome at the Festival, where they will find a children and young people’s entertainment area filled with fun rides and games. All are invited to enjoy the food, take in the culture, and dance to music. The 2014 Hamptons Greek Festival will give attendees the opportunity to tour the new beautiful Byzantine Church which has been described by Southampton Press as “one of the best Houses in Town.” The Hamptons Greek Festival: Thursday, July 10th through Sunday, July 13th. Festival hours are: 4 to 11 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday; Sunday, 12 noon to 9 p.m. Everyday is Bracelet Day. The Festival is located at the Greek Orthodox Church at 111 St. Andrews Road and is easily accessible from both the Sunrise and Montauk Highways in Southampton. of the Motorola HC1 Headset computer. Chris Foley and Brian McHale, both Motorola

Mr. McHale discussed how his passion for science and math lead him his future as a Mechanical Engineer and to his current position as the Product Manager for the HC1 project at Motorola

Solutions. Mr. Foley was able to shed light on the various manufacturing challenges that are faced to bring the product from a working design, to a prototype and finally to mass production. The HC1 is a head mounted mobile computer marketed for industrial and military applications. Its purpose is to provide the operator with a hands free, voice controlled interface that presents data to the user via a small yet rugged display. Possible uses are for maintenance workers and technicians to have

access to technical data while repairing equipment and even the possibility to stream live video from the technician back to support staff to assist in a repair. Students were introduced to the current uses in industry, discussed alternative uses and made suggestions for future use of mobile computing technology. The students posed many questions relating to product cost, durability, battery life, recharging time, operating system and compatible software.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There is a video making its rounds on the social media circuit, showcasing what can only be described as the sorry state of our education system. One after another, various beachgoers were interviewed on the shores of our very own Jones Beach over this past Memorial Day weekend, asked questions ranging from “Who did we fight in the Revolutionary War?” to “What side of the Civil War was Abraham Lincoln associated with?” to “What country attacked us at Pearl Harbor?” The answers? Some of the best gems were “France” (our opponents in the War for Independence), “The South” (50/50 shot, people) and every nation from “China” to “Russia” to “Korea” to, you

guessed it, “France.” So much for the “date which will live in infamy,” right? And all this was to determine who, if anyone, could explain why we began commemorating Memorial Day in the first place. Judging by the aforementioned answers, not too many history buffs among us. The best part was that most, if not all, of the interviewees were clearly high school or college age, leading to the question: what exactly are they learning in school these days? Sure, I can’t tell you the details of every historical event which occurred over the course of the last several centuries, but the basics? Those are pretty hard to forget. And when I was actually in school, studying for exams every other week and writing term papers on such topics? It would have been difficult not to retain at least something, anything.

It’s a sad state of affairs when you are blissfully ignorant of your own nation’s battle for independence and how you came to enjoy such freedoms as frolicking on the beach on a “holiday” weekend, having no clue how such occasion came into fruition. Sure it’s funny and entertaining to watch as you’re scrolling through the Facebook newsfeed; but when you take a step back and realize that these are the people with whom you coexist on a daily basis, some from your own generation, it becomes pretty disconcerting. I wonder how many of these individuals grabbed their smartphones and Googled the answers following their failed interviews. For those keeping score at home: 1.) Britain, 2.) North and 3.) Japan. They may want to grab a history book and fill in the rest.
