“Hope,” a multipanelled artwork created by three classes of visual art students at Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, was awarded a First Prize in the 2014 student art competition at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center in Glen Cove, Long Island. The work was designed and built during the summer of 2013 at the renowned summer arts day camp, which is also an agency of the UJA-Federation of New York. It was conceived as a visual metaphor for the chronology of events that precipitated the Holocaust and its aftermath. The Usdan winning prize, in the Multi-Media/Still category, was awarded at the Center on Sunday May 18th. The project was conceived by Usdan Art Department Chair Rochelle Morgan, who is a child of Holocaust

With the recent passing of Memorial Day, I thought it appropriate to resurrect an old column from 2006, as the sentiment remains the same no matter the year…
for most people, all that matters is that it qualifies as a paid day off. And there we are, off and running, blissfully unaware and increasingly unpatriotic as a result. When did this sense of apathy set it? Is it just a manifestation of the more recent generations, or is it representative of our country as a whole? Now, I’m certain there are many to whom this sentiment does not apply. Any veterans, or the family and friends of those who have served, are generally quite appreciative of such a day’s significance. It began with a visit to Usdan in August by Ms Morgan’s mother and aunt, Lucy Gutman and Rita Kurz, who spoke and were interviewed by the student artists about their experiences in concentration camps. The students wanted to know how people survive horrific life events but still maintain dignity, integrity and compassion; and the artistic task for the students was to find the proper medium and method to best respond to this question. They also wanted their artwork to pay tribute to two women who, in the face of extraordinary abominations, managed not only to salvage their existence but to subsequently live full and productive lives in New York. The result is a large lucite “box” of approximately six feet in

Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, (who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair) but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering his services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC area. With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

The West Islip American Legion Post has played an important role in the Memorial Day parade and the Festival of Lights for the past thirty eight years, two events that members of the community enjoy each year. The American Legion Post also raises money to send one boy and one girl from the community each year to Boys State and Girls State. Besides all the service that the American Legion
Post does for all members of the community, they support local veterans and all who serve. Islip Town Clerk Olga Murray recently welcomed future Eagle Scout, Billy Baldwin, and members of Troop 292 of Brentwood, as they delivered a new handmade toy chest to Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet. As part of Billy’s Eagle Scout project, he designed and crafted a new toy chest for the shelter to store dog toys. RELAY CHAMPIONS - Congratulations to the West Islip Varsity Boys Track Team, Coach Robertson and Coach Lavery for taking 1st place in the Suffolk County Relay Championships on Saturday, May 10th.
Film Festival Winners On May 9th, students from St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School won 2nd place honors in the category of animation for their video Life Of A Paper Clip and also won 3rd place honors for best documentary at the 12th annual Hendrick Hudson Film Festival. The Hendrick Hudson Film Festival gives local high school filmmakers from the surrounding areas the opportunity to see their talents on the big screen. Regarded as the premiere high school film festival in New York, it
showcases and highlights the film making talents of students throughout the tri-state area and across the country. SJB students Caroline Herrera of Deer Park and Phineas Reichert of East Northport created the digital animation for Life Of A Paper Clip. Their Computer Generated Imagery teacher Ms. Keri Kelly stated “I am so impressed with the work and determination these students put into their stop motion project. Phineas and Caroline are two talented individuals and I
cannot wait to see what the future holds for them.” Mr. Carl Coulanges, a teacher at SJB and the moderator of the SJB Media News Network offered; “the Hendrick Hudson Film Festival was a great experience for the SJB Media News Network. Our videos were selected out of more than 200 entries. These students are very dedicated and work extremely hard in producing content not only for the SJB community, but also for the world to see. I am very proud of them.”
This week has been full of “lasts.” Today was my last Varsity Sports Award Dinner. Tomorrow is my last day of high school. As I write my last article of my high school years, I look back fondly on the memories that I have made and the bonds that I have formed. Even though I’ll be entering college soon, St. John the Baptist will always hold a special place in my heart. There are great people here. Tonight, at my fourth Varsity Sports Award Dinner, I felt like I was part of something bigger than just the Crew Team. I felt as if I was a member of the entire SJB family.
From the athletes to the athletic directors, the bond is strong. As I collected my AllState Award, I couldn’t help but feel nostalgic. It was the fourth, and final, time I would ever stand on that stage and hear my name read by my coaches. It was a bittersweet moment as I won several accolades. From that stage, I could see some of my classmates. They make up the group that has accompanied me in this great journey that culminates in just a few hours. Now, that part of my life is almost over. We are still in training for Nationals, but there will never be a team
that can influence me so greatly. Soon, I’ll be done with high school, and those same classmates will forget my name. The teachers will forget I existed. Only I will remember the wonderful times that I’ve had and the memories I’ve formed. I’ve loved every minute of this crazy ride. Each year, as we watched the seniors lock their lockers for the last time, I have said that I won’t cry when it’s my time. Now, I am welling up from just writing this article. From day one, this place has been my home. I’m going to miss it.

Congratulations to West Islip Boys Varsity Lacrosse Coach Scott Craig on his recent induction into the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame.
This not-for-profit organization was founded in 1990 and recognizes individuals from Suffolk County who have gained prominence in the field of
professional and amateur sports. Coach Craig has coached boys lacrosse at West Islip for 35 years and his teams have won 3 National Championships, 5 NY State Championships, 7 Long Island Championships, 9 straight County Championships, and multiple league, division and Super 6 championships. During his tenure, he has coached 29 All Americans, 4 Academic All Americans and multiple Scholar Athletes.
Current Events Champs Each year, Udall Road Middle School National Current Events teams for 7th and 8th grade under advisor Ms. Pulitano, compete with other students across the nation. Each team member is required to take four tests which are made up of rigorous questions concerning national and world events. This year, both the 7th and 8th grade teams were winners. The 8th grade team
placed first in the nation. Two 8th graders Timothy C. and Liam F. tied for first place in the nation. Our seventh grade team placed
2nd in the nation. 7th grader Zoey L. took first place for 7th graders in the nation.
