The play was based on the well-known children’s novel written in 1908 by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery. The story recounts the adventures of Anne Shirley, an orphan girl who is mistakenly sent to Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a brother and sister who had intended to adopt a boy.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) was awarded a $25,000 grant from the Long Island Community Foundation for the Military Families in Training (M-FIT) Program. Given the stressful nature of the military and the traumatizing experiences of war, many veterans experience psychological distress that is complicated by substance use. Many of these veterans are experiencing serious mental health concerns including substance use disorders (SUD) posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury, depression and serious psychological distress (SPD). Due to the challenge of engaging veterans, LICADD will work to increase awareness of the M-FIT program to reach more veterans and their family members, expand partnerships and work towards removing the stigma associated with mental health needs in the military. Of the more than 700,000 veterans nationally, Long Island is the home to approximately 175,000. M-FIT is designed to build resiliency among

Helpful Donation Shelter Island High School students, along with group advisor Janine Mahoney, have been long time supporters and volunteers of Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk’s Student Build Program. Most recently, the district received a donation from Shelter Island Presbyterian Church in the amount of $1,300, which they gifted to Habitat. Over
the years, the school has raised more than $9,000 and hundreds of SIHS students have participated in the program. In addition to their volunteer efforts the school has donated new building supplies and tools to Habitat projects. Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk encourages youth of all ages to get involved in the Long Island community. Each year,
young Long Islanders help with fundraising, building, office work and hospitality for volunteers and homeowners. Eyes On The Sky By: Jamie Lynn Ryan At this time of year, I usually write a column on the importance of appreciating Memorial Day for its intended purpose, to honor those who have served and sacrificed. Too easily do we as a society become swept up in the “unofficial summer kickoff” mentality, of BBQs and pool openings and the beginning of beach season. That said, there is one other Memorial Day tradition that I do truly enjoy, which mixes the significance of the occasion with some good oldfashioned fun in the sun. I am speaking of the Jones Beach Air Show, held each year on the Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. I’ve been attending the
show for the last seven years or so, enjoying the alternating featured performances of both the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels. As a member of the press, I was even lucky enough to have the opportunity a few years back to meet and greet the Blue Angels’ pilots at an exclusive preview held at Republic Airport. What an extraordinary experience! The great part is that the show never gets old. The camaraderie of sitting on the sand, eyes to the sky, with tens of thousands of fellow spectators is something special. Over the last several years, I have endured everything from severe sunburns to shivering under layers of clothing, buried under my beach blanket… from breezing right in to a prime oceanfront spot to being
forced to park on the median of Ocean Parkway after sitting in traffic for hours. Each year, no matter the conditions, I have been able to capture stunning photographs and, most importantly, to make happy, lasting memories with friends. Sure, it may be a frivolous, fun day at the beach; but ultimately, we are appreciating the grand spectacle of our military aircraft at its finest. It is a beautiful site to behold, one that everyone should make a point of taking in at least once in his or her lives. This weekend, I plan to join the masses in making my way to Jones Beach once again – armed with sunscreen, and several extra layers of clothing – just in case. Happy Summer to all!

Less than a year since its completion, a playground built at West Islip Town Beach and Marina is getting cleaned up for the spring and it’s also getting a new addition - a Little Free Library - thanks to some school children, Islip Town Councilman Steven Flotteron announced at a press conference held at the park yesterday. Prior to the press conference, community volunteers spent the day planting flowers and sprucing up the playground, which was built as a memorial to Madeleine Hsu, 6, one of the young children killed in the December 14th, 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut. Following the clean-up, Councilman Flotteron unveiled a Little Free Library at the playground’s entrance that was constructed of cedar by local high school students in their woodshop class. Little Free Libraries are spots where books are put out for anyone who wants to read them with no costs,
no sign-outs and no strings attached. Six-year-olds from the Paul J. Bellew Elementary School, who raised funds for the playground plantings, donated the library’s first books. “Madeleine Hsu really loved to read,” said Councilman Flotteron. “This Little Free Library is a fitting tribute to her and gives children in our community an opportunity to recycle books they no longer want, and choose from other books they may want to read.” The renovated park was built with the help of the Sandy Ground Project’s Where the Angels Play Foundation, a nonprofit where police officers, firefighters, teachers and others came together to build 26 playgrounds in parts of the tri-state area affected by Superstorm Sandy. More than $200,000 in donations was used to complete the project, which included new sidewalks and curbs, refurbished bathrooms, a new playground and an array of landscaping.
Each park is dedicated to one of the 20 children and six educators who were killed on Dec. 14, 2012, in the Newtown, Connecticut, shooting and is built around their likes, including their favorite colors. Councilman Flotteron, liaison to the project since its inception in 2013, said he broached the idea of the library to community leaders about eight months ago. “They loved the idea,” he said. “By building this Little Free Library these students are allowing their love of reading to be shared, giving old books new life, and in many ways, bringing our community together,” Councilman Flotteron added. The Little Free Library movement began in Wisconsin in 2009 and since then has spread to more than 25,000 registered Little Free Library book exchanges in all 50 states and 70 countries, according to LittleFreeLibrary.org, the web site of the not-forprofit organization.

Summer Portfolio Program The Art League of Long Island’s Summer Portfolio Program, now in its 20th year, is back with a new lead instructor and a fresh new approach. Under the direction of Artist/Instructor Nikki Girgenti, teens ages 1417 will be able to fully immerse themselves in the creative process, develop a sense of camaraderie and community with their fellow artists, and expand their portfolios as they strive to set themselves apart as artists. The Summer Portfolio Program will help students understand the importance and the dynamics involved in creating an above average art portfolio, given the competitive nature of the college admissions process. Studies in observational drawing, figure drawing, mixed media, watercolors, acrylic, printmaking, digital photography, landscapes, book arts, found object art, sculpture, and alternative techniques will be explored. Students will enjoy unique experiences,
such as mock portfolio reviews, creating digital portfolios, guest speakers, and much more. This is a great opportunity for high school students to spend time developing their portfolios; whether they plan on applying to a BFA program, intend to submit an art supplement, or simply want to add to their breadth of artwork as they prepare for AP or IB art courses in High School. The Summer Portfolio sessions take place 9:30am to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Art League’s center in Dix Hills in two 3-week sessions: July 6th-24th and July 27th-August 14th. Nikki Girgenti is an accomplished artist and educator who earned her MA at Stony Brook University and BA at Dowling College. With nearly a decade of teaching at the Art League, including two years of administrative experience in the League’s Summer Art Adventure Program, and eight years of teaching high school
art, Girgenti brings a fresh approach combined with a strong record of success to the Summer Portfolio Program. She currently teaches 11th grade Portfolio and 12th grade Advanced Portfolio and has a reputation for guiding scores of students towards outstanding outcomes. The Art League of Long Island will be offering a Scholarship for a $630 tuition voucher toward session one or two of Summer Portfolio Development 2015.
