The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) hosted its 5th Annual Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament on Tuesday, May 17th. This year, the agency was hosted at the Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton to raise more than $100,000 for LICADD’s teen substance abuse and addiction programs. Participants were treated to a fast speed-of-play tournament under sunny skies, before returning to the Club for a delicious dinner overlooking Peconic Bay. At a time when so many families know firsthand the pain of having a child struggling with addiction, this event was established to respond to the escalating needs of the community. Great Expectations By: Jamie Lynn Ryan “Spring is the time of year when it is summer in the sun and winter in the shade.” ~ Charles Dickens, Great Expectations While the calendar may technically still say spring for almost another month, the approach of Memorial Day weekend signals summer on the horizon. As thousands of Long Islanders head to the beach to enjoy the sun, surf and sand, we reflect on the first five months of the year… how has your 2016 been so far? Is it headed in the right direction? Are there still goals left to attain? What

does the remainder of the year hold in store? Of course, we can only predict so much, direct our fate to a degree; but, with that, our actions – or inaction, as the case may be – are what set the precedence for how our days will unfold. A little positive momentum goes a long way in determining the course of weeks, months, even entire years. One small step in the right direction is all it takes to turn things around. And with that, spring is the perfect time to look forward, that season of rebirth and growth, of blossoming flowers and greening grass, of eggs hatching and bunnies

frolicking, of pools opening and bathing suits and flip flops seeing the light of day. Speaking of, those late afternoons and early evenings of golden sunlight do wonders for the psyche – how nice to leave work and still have that sunset glow to drive home by. And so we turn the page on May, look ahead to June and all that summer beckons. We dust off the remnants of the past, and gaze forward into the great unknown, full of anticipation and promise and excitement in the hope that tomorrow will be a better day. Here’s to 2016 and molding it into something memorable!

West Islip High School’s American Sign Language class, a dual credit Adelphi College course, held its sixth annual ASL Idol competition on March

17th. More than 300 people were in attendance to watch 12 performances from seven different schools from across Long

Island, and the students raised over $4,000 for the American Society for Deaf Children as part of their volunteerism unit.

Here’s a little ditty I’m compelled to write today, Extrolling the wonderous wonders surging towards us, Finally here – the month of May. Boots, scarfs, shovels and the roar of snow blowers, Gladly replaced with thatching, pruning and the symphony of lawn mowers. Outside my window tulips align –row after row. I spot a pair of robins flitting from branch to branch on a newly blossoming tree. It’s then that I give pause to reflect on the miraculous rebirth of the season And give thanks for all the blessings it brings, The most welcomed of months, The month of May!

Sea Perch Program

The Bridges Academy Sea Perch Competition was held recently at Webb College in Glen Cove. Sea Perch is an educational outreach program sponsored by the Office Of Naval Research to help identify the next generation of engineers in America and it helps fulfill the “E” for engineering in S.T.E.M. Programs. Bridges Academy 6th and 7th graders built

their own ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles) from kits provided by the school. They learned to drill, solder, connect cables and experienced many important principles of marine engineering regarding buoyancy, propulsion, displacement and much more. Professor Matthew Werner, Dean at Webb Institute welcomed the students at Webb on

Saturday and after some final tune ups, the students were engaged in three basic timed activities with their ROVs. They simulated capping a leaking oil rig, maneuvering and taking photos of the Titanic and a fun-filled soccer game showing off their ROV handling skills. All activities were performed in the Webb Institute naval Test Tank.

West Islip High School educator Danielle Davis was recently named a Teacher of Excellence, a new award sponsored by State Sen. Phil Boyle. Marking National Teacher Appreciation Week, Boyle hosted an inaugural Teachers of Excellence awards ceremony on May 5th at the Bay Shore Fire Department, honoring

Davis and 14 other Long Island honorees that he called “our best and brightest teachers who deserve recognition for their dedication to preparing our children for the future.” Davis, an outstanding leader and mentor who successfully teaches all levels of mathematics to students of all abilities, is

known for her compassion, kindness, warmth, energy and love of math. According to Kathleen Sapanski, the district’s director of math and business education, Davis unequivocally believes in the ability of every student to achieve success.
