Federation of Organizations hosted a Senior Volunteer Recognition Luncheon on Friday, May 3rd at the Huntington Hilton. The event served to honor senior volunteers from the Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion Programs and was well attended by over 300 guests. The day was celebrated with a gala luncheon and dancing. The Foster Grandparent Program connects local senior citizen volunteers with special needs children in schools, Head Start centers, preschools and other community locations. Currently, over 170 Foster Grandparents serve as mentors and tutors to over 2100 children daily throughout Suffolk County. Joseph Greco, a Kindergarten teacher at

Share Summer More Early Escapes Moments

On May 3rd, AMVETS and Silo members gathered with local officials and advocates for the disabled to celebrate the installation of an Audible Crosswalk at the intersection of Higbie Lane and Udall Road in West Islip. Devin Fernandez a visually impaired gentlemen that was having difficulty safely crossing this busy intersection contacted Susan Malone at SC Legislator Tom Baraga’s office and Marilyn Tucci of SILO requesting assistance. Marilyn and Susan worked diligently to provide an opportunity for Mr. Fernandez to independently negotiate this complex intersection on a daily basis. Based on these concerns contact was made with the Suffolk County Department of Public Works to determine if an Audible Crosswalk could be installed at this intersection. Our group was able to

What would you do if you won a million dollars? Well, in this day and age, the question is more, what would you do if you won many tens of millions of dollars, hundreds of millions even? After taxes, of course. And the answer? Well, it varies by person. Some people, when presented with such a seemingly farfetched concept, spout off a list of equally unrealistic purchases that they would immediately make – you know, the private island, jumbo jet, yacht… the whole deal. But then there are others who, should they ever have the good fortune to come into that kind of money, want only to “be comfortable” – to pay off remaining

mortgages and car loans, to make necessary repairs and renovations around the home, maybe buy a new car – nothing too outlandish really. Because really, once you take into account the taxes, plus your average life expectancy, a few million dollars can be blown through fairly quickly. It sounds like a lot, but is it really? Depends upon how you budget it. Plan a couple of family vacations, put some away for your children’s college funds, maybe some in the retirement fund… Which brings to light that other question – would you continue to work if you won such a jackpot? For some, the answer would be an easy and unequivocal “no.” And, if your only purpose of having a job is to make ends meet, that makes perfect sense.

But if you are fortunate enough to have an actual career, one that you have nurtured throughout high school, college and young adulthood, then why should money lessen that passion? If anything, it should allow you the freedom to explore other, perhaps less lucrative, options within that chosen field. Think of it as a new lease on life. Money can’t buy happiness, we know this much is true. But it sure can eliminate many of the daily stresses which cause unnecessary aggravation in our lives… which, in turn, would most likely result in increased happiness, no? Of course, the odds of anyone being forced to wrestle with these questions are fairly slim to none. But hey, you just never know.

AMVETS, SILO and Helen Keller Services for the Blind have instituted a program to increase awareness concerning the need for more Audible Crosswalks for the visually impaired and physically challenged. Audible Crosswalks are installed at busy intersections to allow visually impaired people to proceed safely through crosswalks after they receive an audible prompt to do so, such as a beeping noise or words that signify it is now safe to cross the intersection. The goal of this program is to allow visually impaired men and women to travel more safely thereby assuring greater independence, dignity and opportunity. AMVETS, Helen Keller Services for the Blind (HKSB) and Suffolk Independent Living Organization (SILO) have attempted to address the above mentioned concerns regarding disabled

individuals. HKSB has a training program for the visually impaired which includes going out into the field and providing Orientation and Mobility instruction to help their clients develop the skills necessary to safely negotiate complex intersections. SILO assists individuals with disabilities in developing essential life skills while also providing them with the necessary information and referrals so they can make informed decisions toward reaching their goals of living independently in the community. These organizations have contacted AMVETS and asked them to advocate for their clients and request Audible Crosswalks at intersections where Orientation and Mobility Instructors have noticed potentially dangerous crossing conditions.
