Marking The Milestones By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m not sure when it first occurred to me, but at some point over the course of the last few weeks, I came to the somewhat startling realization that it has been 10 full years since I graduated from college. A whole decade. Wow. I’m not sure why this came as such a shock. After all, the math clearly adds up. And I did attend my high school’s 10-year reunion a full 4 years ago. But still, it seemed that there would be a bit more of a cushion until the next milestone. I suppose time flies while you’re busy
working to make ends meet and your life is not dictated by a bell schedule. Although, come to think of it, there were no bells to signal the beginning or ending of class in college, which was nice in its own way. It was that subtle transition from the structure of high school to the faux freedom of “the real world,” where you were able to choose a path well suited to your future pursuits and, well, pursue it. And now here we are, 10 years later. Bells have been replaced by alarm clocks and deadlines and bills and all those fun adult
responsibilities. To think we once thought finals and term papers were the ultimate source of stress, right? It almost makes school seem appealing once again. Almost. To all those graduating from college this Spring, congratulations. May you find something worth pursuing that brings you a great deal of happiness and fulfillment; ideally, something which pays the bills, of course. And may you savor these next years most of all as, before you know it, you will be receiving invitations to your own 10 year college reunion.

It gives these children the opportunity to be a kid again and it renews their spirit so they can continue to fight for a cure.”

Grant Received The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) has received a $150,000 competitive grant from the New York State Department of Health/ AIDS Institute to launch a new program for Long Islanders with HIV/AIDS who also struggle with substance use disorders and/or other mental health issues.
Called Positive Connections, the program will ensure that local residents living with HIV/ AIDS have full access to regular behavioral health screenings, facilitated entry into addiction and mental health treatment and ongoing psychoeducational support designed to promote treatment adherence, sexual/substance abuse
risk reduction and optimal physical and mental health. “In the midst of Long Island’s opiate crisis, we are seeing a growing generation of young substance users who lack cultural and personal knowledge of HIV/AIDS and it’s risk factors,” said LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds. “These are folks who were in diapers during
programs and a wide range of communitybased services to families impacted by addiction. The agency’s specialty programs include a medically supervised overdose prevention program, a mentoring program for children of prisoners, an E-Therapy initiative offering relapse prevention via secure video conferencing, and Long
Island’s largest Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Positive Connections will operate out of LICADD’s offices conveniently located in Mineola, Ronkonkoma and Riverhead. The program, which Sheriff Vincent DeMarco implemented in Suffolk County in 2007, combines radio technology and specially trained search and rescue personnel from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office. Project Lifesaver clients wear a personalized

one ounce battery operated transmitter bracelet which emits a tracking signal every second, 24 hours a day. Transmitters are smaller than a quarter and each transmitter has its own unique frequency. as Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Autism, Down Syndrome, or other mental challenges. United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Suffolk, Inc. was named a winner at the 2nd Annual Long Island Imagine Awards on Tuesday, May 6th, at Crest Hollow Country Club. UCP of Suffolk won the Pilot Benefits Group Innovation Award for its American Red Cross Volunteer Support Group, the nation’s first group of individuals with a developmental disability who are trained Red Cross volunteers. The 2nd Annual Long Island Imagine Awards is the premiere awards
gala dedicated exclusively to the nonprofit sector. It highlights some of the 3,500 nonprofit organizations that are based on Long Island, covering health, welfare, advocacy and cultural organizations. Each award winner was given a beautiful glass trophy along with a $5,000 grant. The Pilot Benefits Group Innovation Award recognizes nonprofits that have been innovative in adopting new platforms that lead to an increase in the organization’s ability
to meet its mission. The American Red Cross Volunteer Support Group, which was formed in July 2010, consists of 13 trained volunteers who through peer to peer training and presentations share vital information on preparedness and fire safety. “I am so proud of each and every member of our American Red Cross Volunteer Support Group,” Stephen H. Counting Down The Days To The End
As I count down the days until my final day of high school, I can’t help but feel nostalgic about the friends that I’ve made, the things that I’ve done, and the chapter of my life that is now coming to a close. These past few years have gone by so fast. From the moment I walked into SJB on the first day of my freshman year, I knew that my final day would be hard. I’ve made special bonds here. I’ve done great things here. St. John’s has afforded me the ability to attend Villanova in the fall. Without SJB, my high school years would have been mediocre. Now, as a
graduating student, I feel torn between emotions. It is a bittersweet end to the greatest part of my life thus far. As I close my locker for the last few times, I am just beginning to realize how special my time here was. I’ve never felt so accepted by a group of my peers. It is with a heavy heart that I write this article. I am going to miss every aspect of SJB. From the Cougar Crazies to Mrs. Walsh screaming in the hallways, St. John’s has been a pleasure. My years here have influenced my future. I’ve just qualified to row in the National Championship for St. John’s. Hopefully, I can
give back a medal to a school that has given me so much. If I could start over as a freshman, I would do it all the same. There is nothing about St. John’s that I would have changed. If you are on the fence about sending your son or daughter to St. John’s, do it. It is the smartest investment you’ll ever make. St. John’s is an environment that breeds leaders. Coming from a senior, SJB is a place where a family is formed. I would not trade my years here for anything. They say high school is the best time of your life, and so far, this rings true.

Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, (who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair) but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering his services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC area. With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

Congratulations to several world language students from Beach Street Middle School and Udall Road Middle School who attained national recognition for excellent performance on Level 1 of the 2014 National Spanish Examination. The students who completed both parts of the exam earned a
total of eight gold, ten silver and eleven bronze medals along with twenty honorable mentions. “Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examination is very prestigious,” said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind
in the United States with over 154,000 students participating on various levels in 2014.” The National Spanish Examinations are administered each year in grades 6 through 12, and are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
Regatta & Awards Dinner On Saturday, June 14th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) will host its 2nd Annual Alzheimer’s Regatta & Awards Dinner at the Sagamore Yacht Club, located at Head of Bay Avenue in Oyster Bay. Registration begins at 1 p.m. Presenting sponsors for the event are the Sagamore Yacht Club and Oakcliff Sailing Center. Although there is no entry fee, all registrants are encouraged to help raise money for Alzheimer’s Disease research and support. Once again, Dawn Riley, Executive Director, Oakcliff Sailing Center, and Board Member, US Sailing, will be in attendance. Ms. Riley was the 2002 IC45 World Champion and 1992 America’s Cup winner. Additionally, in her third of four Cups, she was CEO and Captain of America True, the only woman to manage an America’s Cup sailing team. In addition to the Regatta, there will be the Paddling for Poker
event, which is part of the Regatta, to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Disease research and support. Registration is at 1 p.m. at Beekman Beach, 1 West End Avenue in Oyster Bay. Participants paddle to five boats; at each boat, they receive a card. Once they receive five cards, they have made their poker hand. The highest hand wins a prize to be awarded at the awards dinner. All participants must finish by 4 p.m. This event is open to all kayakers and paddleboarders. An awards dinner will take place at 6 p.m. with live entertainment provided by the Old Salts Band. This year’s theme for the dinner is “Red, White, and Blue.” Awards will be given for Highest Fundraising Individual and Highest Fundraising Team in each category. In addition, the winning poker hand will be announced. There is no charge for dinner to all participants who raise a minimum of $100. This year, The
Alzheimer’s Regatta will have a special treat for those who want to watch the Regatta and Paddling for Poker: a guided tour of historic Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor. The Vessel Christeen is a 40foot Gaff Rigged Sloop that was built in 1883 and completely restored in 1999. She is the oldest Oyster Sloop in America and is a National Historic Landmark. The Christeen will sail from the Sagamore Yacht Club at noon and again at 2 p.m. For those who wish to participate but do not own a sailboat, paddleboard or kayak, rentals are available. Twenty-eight minutes and thirty seven seconds after the starting horn sounded, 12 year-old Luke Anderson crossed the finish line on a beautiful Saturday morning elated with his accomplishment. A leukemia survivor, Luke joined his family and other participants at the Walk-Run for Friends of Karen at the Long Island Marathon’s 5K Race. This 8th annual event began in 2007 with 25 participants and spearheaded by Luke’s mother, Evelyn Anderson, a former South Setauket,
resident, who wanted to celebrate her son’s life by running a race in his honor.
