Three Months & Still Swimming Strong Well, barring any unforeseen circumstances (fingers and flippers crossed), tomorrow will mark Buddy the Betta’s much anticipated 3-month birthday with me. Why such a big fuss for such a tiny milestone? I think it’s fair to say that any landmarks achieved while residing in a fishbowl should be celebrated, don’t you? Other than his uncanny fascination with the ornamental plant he resides beside (well, in, really), he seems perfectly content to swim laps around his bowl, only pausing long enough to inhale a few flakes, chew, and move on. They say that fish do truly come to know their owners over time, and I firmly believe this to be so. The moment I walk into the room, I
don’t even need to flip the light switch before I see my little Buddy, face pressed against the glass, anxiously awaiting my return. Who needs a puppy with a greeting like that, right? Of course, it would be nice to interact on a bit more of a personal level. With this in mind, I decided to briefly dip the tip of my finger into the bowl one night just to see what he would do. Well, let’s just say that anything moving near the surface is assumed to be edible. No sooner had my finger hit the water, then Buddy came zooming over, anxiously pecking. Curious, I decided to do a little research to see A.) if Bettas have actual teeth (they do); B.) if they can harm humans with aforementioned teeth (not so

I went on to read that, in most cases, these extremely intelligent fish can even be trained to perform simple tricks, such as “jumping” to get their food, spreading their fins in front of a mirror, and responding to feeding time by waiting in a set spot for the prized flakes. DIGGING FOR FOSSILS - The kindergarten children in Mrs. Pryhocki’s science class at Our Lady of Lourdes School in West Islip were recently busy digging for fossils to prepare for a video conference with the Carnegie Museum in Pennsylvania. They have been learning about rocks, volcanos and fossils in science class. The students read a story about how fossils are found and how they get to the museum, and the book introduced them to the tools used to find bones in dirt and rocks. The class then went to the dig site and used brushes to find their own dinosaur claw. They had a great time being paleontologists!

Mather Memorial Hospital’s 30th Annual Golf Classic will take place at the Port Jefferson Country Club at Harbor Hills on Monday, June 1st, with proceeds benefitting Nursing Education programs at the Hospital. The event has raised nearly $3 million for the Hospital over the years. This year’s John T. Mather Founder’s Award will be presented to James Danowski of Cullen & Danowski, LLP, for his exemplary record of leadership, dedication and excellence to the provision of healthcare in our community. Danowski is on the Mather Hospital Board of Directors and is the Chairman of the JTM Foundation and is heading the Hospital’s building capital campaign.
